rabbi Wechsler has touched the lives of many members of our community through her intellect, warmth, compassion and commitment to the ideals of conservative Judaism. as the first woman to serve as rabbi of chizuk amuno congregation, her impact and accomplishments are demonstrated in our successful adult B’nei Mitzvah and adult learning programs, Gemilut Hasadim efforts, and many learning and life cycle experiences. she also serves as Rav Ha Makhshir of our congregation, supervising kashrut.

her communal work includes service on the executive committee of the Baltimore Board of rabbis, the grant review committee for the Jacob and hilda Blaustein fund of the associated, and the teacher certification group of the center for Jewish education.

deborah received her rabbinic ordination, as well as a master of arts degree, from the Jewish Theological seminary of america in new york city where she also served on the Board of overseers of the rabbinical school.

reflecting on ten yearsi arrived in Baltimore ten years ago this June. i was blonde, single, still in my twenties

and i actually weighed what it said on my driver’s license. my, how things have changed!

in some ways it seems like yesterday when i met rabbi Zaiman in the cafeteria line at the

seminary, and in otherways it feels like many good years that i have been learning from

rabbi shulman.

chizuk amuno has taught me so much in these past ten years and it has been my

privilege to also teach a great deal during this time. We have learned a lot about each

other. my first Shabbat i announced that Shabbat Kiddush would be held in the Krieger

schechter day school; i had no idea that there was an auditorium with the same name.

That was the first of many, many adjustments to make and lessons to learn. i thank you

for your patience, for your kindness, for your friendship, for your criticism, for your

participation, for your interest, for your love, and for all of the many gifts that you have

shared with me over these ten years.

in my first bulletin article i retold a story from Pirkei Avot about rabbi yossi ben

Kisma who was walking by the way and happened upon a man. The man said to him,

“rabbi what city are you from?” The rabbi replied, “i come from a great city of sages and

scholars.” Thereupon he said to the rabbi, “rabbi if you would be willing to dwell with

us in our place i would give you a million gold dinars and precious stones and pearls.”

The rabbi replied, “Were you to give me all the silver and gold and precious stones in the

world, i would still not live anywhere except a place of Torah.”

What an extraordinary beginning i have had to my rabbinate at chizuk amuno. in

the last ten years i have been blessed with “riches” whose value is far above rubies and

with a community that has truly been a place of Torah. i look forward to building on our

beginning for many years to come.

educationaL Programs

finding meaningA Message from Our Presidentseveral years ago one of the Krieger schechter middle school teachers asked her

8th grade students to go to the place in the building that meant the most to them. dr. schneider described the outcome in a Shabbat newsletter. as you can imagine the students scattered throughout the complex. They went to various classrooms, the middle school science room, the Beit Midrash, the gym, and even the nurse’s office. What i remember mostly clearly was that two students sat outside the accounting office! When asked why, they said that had been their first grade classroom, before a renovation turned it into an administrative office. This was their special place at the school, because it was where they first learned to read english and hebrew.

if you were asked to go to that place in chizuk amuno that means the most to you, where would you go? i am sure that many congregants would gravitate to where they sit for the high holy days whether in the sanctuary, the Krieger auditorium, or the stulman auditorium. Shabbat morning attendees might seek out their regular places in the sanctuary. still others might find their favorite chair in the Lerner Beit Midrash, while many teens would likely go to the Kolker youth Lounge. and, i would guess there would be a sprinkling of people spread throughout the entire complex, for physical space has the ability to touch and affect us in many ways.

upon reflection, i suspect that many congregants would ultimately find their way to the hoffberger chapel. for many of us, daily minyan in the chapel has been a source of strength and comfort as we have emerged from sitting shiva and begun to resume our place back among the synagogue community. it is in the chapel that many of us have read Torah for the first time or learned to lead the congregation in prayer. for others the chapel is that special place where they were married under the huppah, celebrated the naming of a daughter, or observed the brit milah of a son. for our young families it is the place they gather each Shabbat morning for family services, where children and parents alike experience the warmth and joy of Shabbat.

if you have been in the chapel lately, you may have noticed that your favorite pew is not as comfortable as it once was. The pews and the carpeting need replacing, and the entire room needs refreshing. The house committee and the Board have been discussing this renewal project for more than a year. i am pleased to report that we will begin renovations in late spring or early summer. since the chapel is used not only for daily minyan but also by our schools during the week and for family Shabbat services, we have decided to remove the pews and replace them with “pew chairs.” This will allow us to make better use of this sacred space. Plans will be on display at the annual meeting on June 11.

among all my memories of times in the chapel, one occurred almost exactly ten years ago. The Board of trustees gathered there for rabbi deborah Wechsler’s formal interview. i remember that she gave a D’var Torah and then answered a wide variety of questions. Throughout, she demonstrated her skill as a teacher, her commitment to conservative Judaism, and her quick and wonderful sense of humor. at the end of this month on the second day of Shavuot, Shabbat, may 30, we will honor her on her 10th anniversary as our rabbi. it will be a wonderful day and i urge you to make plans to attend.

rabbis shulman and Wechsler invite you to join them during the Shabbat mornings between Passover and Shavuot. We’ll discuss the history, philosophy, and meanings of prayer by asking questions and considering the answers found in Midrash and the works of various Jewish thinkers through the ages.

Jewish Camp Welcomes Special Needs Families

This summer, camp Ramah in the Poconos will introduce Tikvah family camp for children with special needs and their families. The pluralistic program will be an opportunity for Jewish families with children with special needs to join together for five days to experience the magic of Jewish summer camp.

Parents study texts, share stories of frustration and success, and relax and enjoy being with other people who understand their triumphs and challenges. siblings connect with other kids their age while enjoying camp activities, and children with special needs experience being campers just like anyone else. family activities include boating on the lake, arts and crafts, israeli dance, challah making, etc.

The dates of the program are august 19-23. The subsidized cost is $613 per family. Please call rabbi Wechsler for more information.

college outreach committee assists high school students as we were busily cooking, cleaning, and schlepping in preparation for Passover, 70 of

our college students received a package of Passover goodies from the college outreach committee. Passover necessities including candy bars, lollipops, and bubble gum were included in the package this year along with some wonderful guidelines from rabbi Wechsler about getting dorm rooms ready for Passover. We hope our students happily munched their way through Passover and enjoyed the connection to home and shul.

greenblatt families’ award for excellence in holocaust education from the Baltimore Jewish council’s holocaust remembrance commission.

as the chair of the Jewish history department at Ksms, Morah Plaut helps oversee the curriculum, programming, and observances that help our students and our school community connect to the experiences in Jewish history which have shaped who we are as Jews today. Morah Plaut coordinates our school’s observance of Kristallnacht and Yom HaShoah, and works with other faculty on the always meaningful 7th grade family history project, which concluded this week with the family history night – an evening of family stories and traditions.

Morah Plaut was recognized for her efforts in holocaust education at the community Yom HaShoah observance this past month. We wish her yasher kohekh, and express our gratitude for her commitment to excellence and learning in our school.

community food PantriesTodah rabbah to the many members of the chizuk amuno family who responded to

the Pre-Passover food drive so generously. food pantries have been dealing with empty shelves with the need for food exceeding the supply during the economic downturn. The following agencies each received a vanload of food: manna house, our daily Bread and gedco (govans ecumenical development corporation). monetary contributions were sent to The Kosher food fund, ahavas yisrael charity fund, mazon, and Project ezra.

Give the gift of a professional look ...

Please drop off accessories and cleaned, gently worn Spring and Summer professional clothing on hangers for men and women

in the Louis A. Cohen Family Chapel Lobby. Volunteers will be on hand to accept donations and help unload cars.

Receipts will be available.

We are accepting children’s books in good condition. Please drop off books in the Administrative Lobby.

Books will be donated to The Book Thing.

Volunteers are needed to transport items on weekdays and Sundays. Please notify us if you drive a van, SUV, or truck and would like to do a mitzvah. Drivers are needed to transport books and clothing

to community agencies, one delivery per volunteer.
