The mammoth task of coordinating and taking our school photographs was undertaken last Friday and appeared to run very smoothly, with all of students looking splendid in their school uniform. It is wonderful to see the vast majority of our students attend every day in school uniform and wearing footwear of protecting them in the many practical classes they attend. The consistent wearing of correct school uniform not only saves students and their parents the dilemma of what to wear each day, it also provides us with a safety benefit of being able to distinguish any intruder or visitor who is not dressed the same as our students. Effective communication between the school and home is critical in enhancing the ability of our staff to create positive and respectful relationships with our families and wider community. In order to undertake the complex tasks of supporting our students academically, socially and emotionally, I ask that parents and carers afford our staff the courtesy of making enquiries through the correct channels. As a principal and parent of four teenagers, I understand that minor conflicts can appear to be quite significant in the mind of an adolescent. A frantic call from your child can often instil a sense urgency resulting in a parent or carer rushing to the school to solve the problem. Parents and carers should reassure their child and then encourage them to speak with a trusted adult, whether that be their favourite teacher, school counsellor or Year Advisor, who are much better placed to offer support together with calm, considered advice. If the student returns home in the afternoon without a resolution, parents should contact the school and ask to speak to an appropriate person in order work towards a positive outcome. By working together, we can ensure that all of our students are known, valued and cared for by the staff at Kooringal High School. In week 5 each term, our teaching staff will participate in an internal audit of our Higher School Certificate monitoring procedures in order to create best practice in the delivery and administration of all Higher School Certificate courses. It is important that parents and students are confident in the quality and accuracy of educational delivery in Stage 6 courses across our school. To ensure this, all teachers will be required to have their Higher School Certificate administration evaluated by their peers in a rigorous and structured manner, enabling Head Teachers to provide support for beginning or inexperienced teachers, whilst identifying and rectifying any areas of deficit. Careers News

Welcome to 2019.

Year 10 Work Experience

Work experience is recommended for all students no matter their career aspirations as it provides an opportunity for to explore be the job and industry also ask people firsthand about the role, training, employment opportunities etc. It enables students to try before you buy. In Term 1 Year 10 will participate in the introduction to work experience sessions. Students will then have all the paperwork required and information necessary to arrange their work experience placements. However, students can certainly have conversations with employers now about possible placements this year. It is recommended that students participate in two weeks of work experience this year.

Year 10 Civil & Environmental Engineering Work Experience 27-31 May 2019 in Sydney

Hosted by UNSW Sydney the program will allow students to experience engineering projects firsthand across six areas of the civil and environmental engineering field, namely:

• Coastal and Port Infrastructure

• Structures and Design

• Construction and Project Management

• Water, Wastewater and Environment

• Surveying and Geospatial Engineering

Daily field trips will be led by UNSW CVEN staff supported by engineering professionals to a range of engineering sites across Sydney, followed by an afternoon debrief and short report writing session at the UNSW Kensington campus. Students must arrange their own transport and accommodation in Sydney. If interested please see Mrs Fitzgerald for an application form.

West of the Divide

In the last two weeks of the school holidays Eilidh Lucas and Lindsay Mayfield went with the West of The Divide tour group to Europe to perform in the wind and vocal ensemble. There were 72 students from 39 schools in regional and rural New South Wales. They visited Italy, Slovenia and Croatia and sang inside the Vatican and Pantheon in Rome. On Australia day they performed at the Lisinski hall in Zagreb. During the tour they attended workshops with maestros and got to meet school students. The trip was filled with lots of great experiences and many friendships were made to last a lifetime.
