From The West Coast To TheWestern Front: British Columbia

And The Great WarAuthor and broadcaster Mark Forsythe and journalist

Greg Dickson will be giving a presentation about theirmost recent book, From the West Coast to the WesternFront: British Columbians and the Great War (HarbourPublishing). Come down to the Castlegar & District Pub-lic Library, 1005 3rd Street on Friday, April 17 at 7 pm.

It has ofen been observed that the rst world war joltedCanada into nationhood, and as Mark Forsythe and GregDickson show in this compelling book, no province par-ticipated more eagerly in that trans ormation or elt theafershock more harshly than British Columbia. In Fromthe West Coast to the Western Front, Forsythe, host oCBC Radio’s mid-day show BC Almanac, marks the 100thanniversary o World War I by teaming with historianGreg Dickson and the ever resource ul BC Almanac audi-ence to compile a sweeping portrayal o that crucial chap-ter o BC history.

O the 611,000 Canadians who ought or King andCountry, 55,570 were rom British Columbia – the highestper capita rate o enlistment in the country. O that con-tingent, 6,225 died in battle, a critical loss to a edglingprovince o barely 400,000.

Compiling stories, arti acts and photos sent in by BCAlmanac listeners rom across the province, this vol-ume tells o submarine smuggling, bagpipes lost on thebattle eld and o the ongoing struggles by soldiers whomade it home. It tells o battles that set records or massdeath amid conditions o unequalled squalor, but also o

the heroism o ront-line nurses and soldiers like GeorgeMaclean, a First Nations man rom the Okanagan, whowon the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

By turns devastating, harrowing, insight ul and miracu-lous, these stories reveal much about the spirit and resil-ience o a people who survived one o history’s greatestdisasters to build the province we have today.

Mark Forsythe was the long-standing host of CBC RadioOne’s BC Almanac. Raised in oronto, Forsythe moved toBC in the mid-seventies and has come to know the provincewell through broadcasting assignments in Smithers, Prince

George, Prince Rupert, the Okanagan and Vancouver.Greg Dickson was a journalist and producer at CBC

radio and television or over 20 years. He also taught jour-nalism at the British Columbia Institute o Technology.

Brutus and Bruiser are both 8-year-old black and tan GermanShepherd/Border Collie mixes. They came to us at the BC SPCANelson Branch when their living arrangements changed andtheir owner was not able to exercise them enough. They wouldboth benet from a diet with frequent exercise as they are bothslightly overweight, but luckily they are an energetic pair and justlove their walks! They are well trained and will respond well tocommands, especially if there is treat in it for them. In the housethey are very calm and relaxed; when out for walks they can pulla bit on lead but are great off lead at the dog park or on the trails.

Having grown up together since they were puppies, they are bestbuddies and we are hoping to adopt them out together. If youare interested in meeting this easy-going pair, please call the BCSPCA Nelson Branch at 250-352-7178.
