In 1955, a racer call Cal Niday crashed against a wall during the Indianapolis 500. The impact fractured his skull, but his Bell helmet saved his life. Michelin importer Northern Accessories really looks after the companies it repre-sents – you only had to be me picking up the phone last month to realise that.

“We’ve got an R1 set-up with Miche-lin’s new Power Pure tyres for you to ride,” company main man Sean Walsh said in his typical matter-of-fact manner. “Would you like us to drop it off for you?

‘Would I what?’ I said as I struggled to work out how – seeing as how BT currently has the KR Transit van on long-term loan – I was going to get out to the company’s Otahuhu offi ce/warehouse and back in the middle of magazine deadline week.

And as it transpired that a Power Pure-equipped YZF-R1 arrived at the offi ce that very afternoon. Perfect really, because I’ve been using Yamaha Motor NZ’s OEM Dunlop-shod R1 as my daily transport since the end of January.

DUAL-COMPOUND

According to Michelin, the key to the new Power Pure range (currently available in 120/60 and 120/70-17 front and 160/60 to 190/55-17 rear sizes) is that they are the lightest of the new dual-compound sports(bike) tyres on the market being just under a kilogram lighter (2 lbs) than similar tyres from other manufacturers.

While they’re not a production race or track day tyre the Power Pures are, accord-ing to Michelin, perfect for a road-going Superbike or Supersport, one which might get the occasional strop on the track but which gets most of its exercise on the road.

track day grip…however that usually means the rear tyre squares off within two or three thousand kilometres.

That’s where the Power Pures are sup-posed to come in. That and better all round dynamics.

PROOF IN THE PUDDING

Which I found out about almost immedi-ately. When Sean rang me back (see what I mean about looking after his suppliers?) I told him that the biggest single difference between the Power Pure-shod R1 and the standard OEM-shod one was in the front end with a quantifi ably easier and lighter (less resistance) roll from upright onto the side of the tyre.

I also said that the tyres had a nice, compliant feel to them.

“Have you read the technical bulletin I e-mailed you? Sean asked.

“Ah…..yeah, well I’ve had a quick look at it,” I lied.

“So when you’re talking about the way the front end feels lighter that will be because the tyres are lighter and even a weight saving of something like a kilogram can result in 10% less inertia,” he contin-ued.

“Yeah, I really should read the stuff they give me, “I thought as I pondered the fact that I had defi nitely noticed a differ-ence.

As, I’m sure you will.

So, if you’re after a hi-tech tyre for your sportsbike but you still do more riding on the road than the track, can I suggest you check out Michelin’s new Power Pure. KR

IRTThe Changing Lubrication

“Thumper” Engines make vastly different demands of lubrication Having only two rings on the piston means a large amount of fuel blows past the rings and down into the engine oil. This fuel “blow-by” dilutes the engine oil, lowering its viscosity and quickly robbing it of its protective power. Furthermore, this blow-by contains fuel combustion products that can lead to deposit and varnish formation as well as corrosion. At Bel-Ray, these issues alone signaled the need for an oil designed specifi cally for these engines, but there were even more elements to consider.

Motorcycle manufacturers recommend a 10W-40 viscosity oil and frequent oil changes for Thumper engines, but there are situations like a Six Days or a Hare Scramble (long endurance races) where a 20W-50 maintains a safe viscosity range for a longer duration. During operation, the original viscosity of the oil changes due to fuel dilution from “blow-by”.

Also, Thumper engines run hot, and oil thins at higher temperatures. The combined effects of the heat and fuel dilution compound the viscosity decrease, so starting with a higher viscosity is added insurance that a high enough viscosity will be maintained to protect the engine.

Understanding viscosity

Viscosity is the measurement of the fl uidity of an oil. In a multi-grade oil the fi rst number is the viscosity grade for cold starts and the second number is the viscosity grade for the operating temperature. The higher the number, the thicker the oil.
