‘Amritotsava-14’ (Institution Day)

„Amritotsava-14‟, the Institution Day was held on 2nd May, 2014. Dr. Madhusudan Atre,

Managing Director, Advanced Micro Devices Ltd. was the Chief Guest of the day. The occasion

was graced by Director Br. Dhanraj and Associate Dean & Head Dr. Rakesh S.G. The

programme began at 10 AM with the lighting of the lamp by all the dignitaries and was

followed by invocation by Ms. Madhura of S8 CSE. The welcome address was delivered by

Chair-ME Dr. Nagaraja S.R. This was followed by an enlightening talk by Director Br. Dhanraj,

who spoke about the importance of spiritual significance and the privilege of being blessed by

a spiritual Guru like „Amma‟.

Dr. Rakesh S.G., presented the annual report of the School, very effectively covering the

entire activities of the year. This was followed by the address by the Chief Guest

Dr. Madhusudan Atre, who gave an insight into the practical aspects of engineering learning and

its relevance to the industry. He also emphasized the importance of industrial and academic

institutional relationships.

„Sanchita-14‟, the school magazine was released by the dignitaries on this occasion.

This was followed by the prize distribution ceremony where the achievements of the

students in all the fields were recognized and awarded. The Academic Excellence Awards,

Karthik Kalaichelvan Memorial Award, awards for cultural events, co-curricular events and

sports events were given away by the Chief Guest and the dignitaries.

The programme which was successfully coordinated by the Department of Mechanical

Engineering concluded with vote of thanks followed by singing of the National Anthem. All

staff members and students were served with lunch on the occasion.

‘Amritakalanjali’ - The Annual College Fest

The annual college fest „Amritakalanjali‟ was conducted on 2nd and 3rd May, 2014. The

fest was flagged off at 2 PM on 2nd May, 2014. The various clubs of Amritadhara conducted

competitions in which there were active participation. Singing, instrumental, dancing, acting,

debate, quiz, creative writing, photography, painting, sketching, short film making and gaming

were the highlights of the fest. The fun & food stalls added great gusto to this mega event. The

campus was buzzing with activities on these two days.

Two week ISTE Workshop on Fluid Mechanics

The two-week ISTE Main Workshop on „Fluid Mechanics‟ was conducted at ASE-

Bengaluru from 20th to 30th May, 2014. The initiative which is a part of the „National Mission on

Education through ICT‟, was supported by the MHRD and was taken up by IIT Kharagpur to

work with Engineering Colleges in the country to enhance the teaching skills of faculty members

in core Engineering and Science subjects. This is the second phase of „Teach One Thousand

Teachers‟ programme run successfully earlier by IIT Bombay, under the project called

„Empowerment of Students and Teachers through Synchronous and Asynchronous Instruction‟.

During this workshop, Prof. Sankar Kumar Som, Prof. Suman Chakraborty and Prof. Sandipan

Ghosh Moulic all from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur delivered

lectures and it was transmitted in distance mode using the A-VIEW software. Faculty members

attended live lectures, tutorials & lab sessions and were immensely benefitted by it. The

workshop was co-ordinated by Mr. Vinod M. Kotebavi Assistant Professor in the Department of

Mechanical Engineering, Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru. A total of 19 participants

attended the workshop which was held in Krishna Hall.

Mr. Rajesh M. attended the ISTE coordinator‟s workshop on „Computer Networking‟ at IIT,

Bombay from 5th to 9th May, 2014. In continuation of this, a workshop on the same will be

conducted through Distance Education mode at Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru

between 30th June & 5th July, 2014.

Ms. Supriya M. attended the ISTE coordinator‟s workshop on „Cyber Security‟ at IIT,

Bombay held between 17th & 21st May, 2014. In continuation of this, a workshop on the

same will be conducted through Distance Education mode at Amrita School of Engineering,

Bengaluru from 10th to 20th July, 2014.

Farewell

A Farewell function was arranged on 1st of May, 2014 for the final year B.Tech. students

of CSE and final year students of M.Tech. (Embedded Systems). This get-together was attended

by all the staff members, final year students and pre-final year students of Department of CSE.

The program started with an invocation song followed by farewell note from the Chair of the

Department Dr. T.S.B. Sudarshan. The Vice-Chair Mr. G. Radhakrishnan, Prof. Raj Sreedharan

and Ms. Supriya M. spoke on the occasion and wished them all success.

A farewell toast to the outgoing students was raised by Mr. Nischal, a student of S6 CSE.

A reply to the toast, on behalf of all the final year students, was given by Mr. Gautham Nair, Mr.

Subramanaian - both from S8 CSE and Ms. Mary from S4 M.Tech. (ES). The event also

witnessed few cultural programs including music and dance.

Students’ Achievements

Dr. Vamsi Krishna Tumuluru joined the department in the capacity of „Assistant Professor

(SG)‟ in May, 2014. He completed his M.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from National

Institute of Technology, Rourkela in 2008 and Ph.D. in the field of „Computer

Engineering‟ from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore in 2011. He

worked as a Research Associate in NTU from February to October, 2011 and at Hong Kong

University of Science and Technology from November, 2011 to February, 2014. He has

served as a Reviewer and Technical Program Committee Member for various international

conferences and journals. His research interests include computer networking, queuing

theory and optimization especially in the area of smart grid.

Farewell 2014 A farewell to the final year students of ECE & EIE was arranged on 5th May, 2014 by

the department. The farewell was coordinated by the ECI Forum. Chairman of the department

wished the students success in all their endeavors. Many senior faculty members addressed the

students and wished them all success too. All the faculty members from the department and the

outgoing students of ECE attended the event.

Ms. Lakshmi P., who has had to relinquish her job due to personal commitments has been

relieved from duty with effect from 31st May, 2014.

Farewell 2014 The Department of EEE organized the farewell function for the outgoing batch of

students on 6th May, 2014. Dr. Shikha Tripathi and Dr. Rashmi M.R. wished the outgoing

students all success. All faculty members and students of final year attended the function.

A project titled “Design and Development of Manual and Electrical Type Water Based

Weed Remover” was carried out by Mr. M. Sandeep Jayaram, Mr. M. Datta Sandesh and

Mr. Kalasagar Reddi students of S6, under the guidance of Mr. R. Pramod, Assistant

Professor for TECHNOLOGY RELATED INNOVATIVE PROJECTS (TRIP–2013 -

14), VISION GROUP ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, Department of Information

Technology, Biotechnology and Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka and had

received a grant of Rs. 30,000/-. The project has now been completed successfully and

submitted to VGST. It has also been adjudged as one of the best projects and will be

displayed at VGST sponsored project exhibition to be held at Vidhana Soudha on 18th June,

2014.

The following B.Tech. projects guided by the faculty in the department have been sponsored

by KSCST for the year 2013-14 under 37th Series Student Project Program (SPP). The

projects were evaluated successfully at Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology, Bengaluru on

10th May, 2014 and an amount of Rs. 6500/- was sanctioned for each of the projects:

Farewell 2014 The Department of Mechanical Engineering held a farewell party to bid adieu to 2010

batch students on 9th May, 2014 in Sudhamani Hall at 2.30 PM. The party started with an

invocation followed by welcome address by Ms. Mrudula Prashanth. Associate Dean & Head

Dr. Rakesh S.G., administered the oath. He spoke on the occasion and wished them all success

for their future. Dr. Nagaraja S.R., Chairman of the department also addressed the students and

wished them best of luck. Some of the faculty members like Mr. Pramod R., Mr. Vinod

Kotebavi & Mr. Ravi Kumar also addressed the outgoing students. Students shared their

experiences at Amrita. Mr. Vinod Kotebavi delivered the vote of thanks. The programme ended

with cultural programme by students and high tea.
