INTRODUCTION

CMC Associates, Inc. (CMC) was contracted by NUS Corporation (NUS) toprovide technical assistance at the Raymark Site as part of MJS's con-tract for Performance of Remedial Response Activities at UncontrolledHazardous Substance Facilities which was awarded by the United StatesEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA) .

CMC's responsibilities were to develop existing monitoring wells, per-form a drawdown step test to determine the specific capacity of thetest well, perform a 24 hour pump test, install pumps and automatic .continuous water level recorders in the monitoring wells, and conducta field survey to determine the horizontal and vertical locations ofexisting monitoring wells.

SITE LOCATION

The Raymark site is located in the vicinity of the Hatboro Town Hall, near Jacksonville Road, along the Reading Railroad, in MontgomeryCounty, Pennsylvania. This site is considered an uncontrolled hazard-ous substance facility because the groundwater in the area is contamin-ated with low level organic compounds. A total of nine wells, exist atthe site and their locations are shown on Figure 1. -

i SIM4ARY OF FIELD OPERATIONSI.

WELL

Materials

All wells, with the exception of H-2, were developed with a 4-inch Gouldpump, model £7EHQS412, 1/2 HP. The pipe was schedule 80, 1-inch I.D.,PVC, and the power source was a Lincoln-Welden, 4.5 kw, 200 amp, AC gener-ator. Well H-2 is a production well with an installed pump of unknownspecifications. Static water level measurements were made with a SlopeInc., electronic water indicator, model #51453. _

Procedure

All nine wells were developed on 8-15-84 and 8-16-84. Before evacuationof each well, the static water level was measured and the values wererecorded by QC. NUS calcualated the number .of gallons to be removedfrom each well. After three well, volumes were removed, the static waterlevels were measured again, and once more after all wells had beenevacuated. Evacuated groundwater was diverted away from each well andSEPTA tracks as directed by NUS. ;

All wells but the production well H-2 were pumped at a rate of 10 gpm.Well H-2 was pumped at approximately 150 gpm. In all wells, with theexception of"PF-l, the static water level (measured from, the top ofcasing) after evacuation had dropped.

The most noticable was Well R-3 where the static water level droppedfrom 38.5 feet to 95.0 feet. During evacuation, the pump was loweredfrom 60 to 100 feet because the well was dry, and the pumping rate wasdecreased from 10 to 4 gpm. Later the pumping rate was increased to10 gpm.

Table 1 sunraarizes well development data at the Raymark Site, and Table2 summarizes static water level data.

STEP TEST " '

Zfeterials : . _ „..

A 4-inch Gould submersible pump, model #70T-B05-10, with nine 20-footpieces and one 10-foot piece 2-inch galvanized steel pipe with rigidcouplings, was used to pump the well. A pump hoist rig was used to raiseand lower the pump.

Procedure I -

In order to determine the specific capacity of the pumping well R-3, astep test was performed on 8-20-84, prior to the pump test.

Before beginning the step test, static toater levels were measured infour of the surrounding wells, R-l, -2, -4, and -5, plus the pump testwell, R-3. The levels are shown in Table 3.

Ihe pump was set in Well R-3 at a depth of 194 feet. Ihe test began at9:45 at a pumping rate of 10 gpm. After 60 minutes, the static waterlevel in Well R-3 had dropped to 143.9 feet. At 10:48, the second hourof pumping began at a rate of 20 gpm. After five minutes, the staticwater level in Well R-3 had dropped to 189.0 feet. At 10:56, the wellwas pumped at 14 gpm, but after just three minutes, the static waterlevel had dropped to 191.5 feet. Ihe final increment began at 11:02 ata rate of 9 gpm. After 15 minutes, the static water level was at 191.6feet. It appeared that Well Rr3 has stabilized at a depth of 191.6 feet.at a pumping rate of 9 gpm. The data for the step test at Well R-3 istabulated in Table 4.

Clearly, Well R-3 would not be adequate as a pumping well during thepump test. As a result, NUS decided to conduct another step test atWell R-2.

The pump was set in Well R-2 at a depth of 164 feet. Ihe test began at13:19 at a pumping rate of 10 gpm. After 4 minutes> the static waterlevel in Well R-2 had dropped to approximately 71 feet and appeared tostabilize at this depth' until the end of the first testing interval after60 minutes. However, the readings obtained with the electronic waterlevel indicator may have been erroneous. Instead of monitoring the true

static water level, the device may have^been activated by groundwater -seepage at 71- feet. "At 14:24, the second hour of pumping began at arate of 20 gpm. After three minutes, the static water level was 85.0feet. After four" minutes, "the well was completely dry. The data forstep test at Well- R-2 is tabulated in Table 5.

Well R-2- would not'be adequate as a pumping well either, and after somediscussion, a decisiori was made by NUS to abandon the pump test.

PROCEDURES

The measurinjflievice rused to measure static water levels was decontamin-ated between each well by rinsing with a methanol/water mixture, and thenrinsing with dis tilled L water. The pump and other related equipment wassteam cleaned between wells.

SURVEYING " - , . . . , , . . --- . . .

A field-survey waT Cohducted at the Raymark Site to establish the dis-tances between monitoring wells and to establish their vertical elevations.Ihe surveying was done "by Mr. Don Boucher, a Registered Professional LandSurveyor in the State of Pennsylvania. The data obtained during the fieldsurvey Is tabulated in Table 6. The final site drawing will be submittedshortly.
