Investing in education1
The Kusuma Trust UK funds and works in partnership with the Kusuma Foundation in India to facilitate and increase access to quality education and other life opportunities for children and young people. Our programmes in Sambalpur in Odisha and Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh focus on the most economically disadvantaged young people to enable them to realise their potential and break the inter-generational cycle of poverty.
This second Kusuma yearbook gives an overview of our activities, programmes and progress in each district in 2014-2015. Our aim is for schools and teachers to deliver better education, leading to improvements in education outcomes for students. We continue to work in partnership with 50 schools through the Kusuma Schools Partnership Initiative, supporting improvements in facilities, teaching and learning resources, teaching practices and governance. The Kusuma Fellowships and Kusuma Excellence Awards recognise and support high performing students, teachers and schools. The Kusuma Resource Centres in both district continue to expand the range of educational resources, training events, seminars and online facilities for students, teachers and members of the community. This year, with the support of State and District education departments, we strengthened our partnerships with government and government aided schools, and engaged teachers, parents, local communities and students more actively in our programmes. We developed materials for teaching and school governance and management for scale up with government and other partners. We continue to evaluate our work to ensure we learn from our experience and use emerging evidence to focus our efforts on the most effective interventions. We take this opportunity to thank our partners and schools, State and District administrations, and the Board, staff and advisers of the Kusuma Trust UK and the Kusuma Foundation India.

Since 2013, the Kusuma Schools Partnership Initiative (KSPI) supports 50 government and aided schools in Sambalpur and Hardoi.
KSPI aims to raise student attainment through the improvement of facilities, professional development of teachers, academic support for students, development of learning resources and improved school governance and management. In 2014, KSPI added 224 light touch* schools (87 in Hardoi and 137 in Sambalpur) which receive limited professional development for teachers.
FacilitiesImprovement to school facilities during the year prioritised basic infrastructure in 50 schools:
• 36 schools installed overhead water tanks, water connections and water purifiers for safe drinking water and the other 14 schools were tested for clean water and deemed to have acceptable levels of water quality• 11 schools received power generators and 39 schools have a working electricity connection• 18 schools renovated toilet blocks for boys and girls and 15 school toilet blocks had minor repairs• 50 schools have functioning libraries and computer and Science laboratories
TeachersKusuma supported secondary school teachers to build their capacity and improve classroom teaching in English, Mathematics and Science through training, mentoring, school based support and teaching and learning resources. Kusuma appointed teachers helped reduce the number of teacher vacancies in schools. Additionally, nine Teachers were appointed by the education department against vacancies in KSPI schools in Sambalpur.
Highlights of Kusuma’s Teacher Professional Development programme Udbhav in 2014–2015 include:• 72 newly recruited teachers taught 27,198 Maths, Science, English, Social Science, Hindi and Odia sessions over six months and helped the completion of Classes 9 and 10 syllabuses in
* Light touch schools receive a briefing, one set of teaching-learning materials and an annual on-site support visit.

the 50 KSPI schools • Kusuma developed and distributed to schools bespoke teaching and learning materials based on the State curriculum - 98 Teacher Support Units and 98 Student Learning Units in Mathematics, Science and English. All teachers and students in KSPI schools received individual copies of these resources. Each of the 224 light touch schools in the district received one set of materials.• 244 KSPI teachers participated in training on the Good Teaching Guide and Teacher Performance Standards• 407 subject teachers from light touch schools were briefed on the teaching and learning materials and the Good Teaching Guide• 40 teachers participated in training on conducting Science experiments in the classroom• 42 teachers from 50 KSPI schools attended refresher training on library management• A District Resource Group (DRG) consisting of 9 specialist teachers was established in each of the two districts. DRG members were trained to provide on-site coaching to school teachers to improve teaching practices. All KSPI schools received an average of 258 mentoring visits over four months, totalling 1,032 visits. All light touch schools received at least one visit from a DRG member.
StudentsKusuma strives to support students to build foundational skills, attain age appropriate learning levels, complete secondary education and make the transition to higher or tertiary education and employment.
Kusuma Fellowships support meritorious students from all government and aided schools in Hardoi and Sambalpur. These Fellowships enable students from disadvantaged backgrounds to complete their secondary, higher and professional education.
In 2014, the Kusuma Excellence Fellowship (KEF) was launched in Hardoi and supported 100 Fellows with a stipend, mentoring and career counselling. In Sambalpur,
6
GovernanceKusuma supported Head Teachers and School Management and Development Committee (SMDC) members from 50 KSPI schools to increase student attainment, improve teaching practices, increase community participation and enhance the school environment.
130 SMDC members were trained on their roles and responsibilities. Seven Head Teacher vacancies were filled by the education department in KSPI schools in Sambalpur. All 50 Head Teachers received training on School Planning and Financial Management delivered by The National University of Educational Planning and Administration.
The 50 KSPI schools developed School Annual Plans (SAPs) detailing priorities for school improvement. These were finalised using resolutions in SMDC meetings. The 50 SMDCs tracked the progress of SAPs through review meetings with Kusuma staff. A notable achievement was that 20 schools successfully managed facilities improvement projects, developing the scope of work, defining timelines, selecting contractors and managing funds within budget.
Quarterly planning and review meetings were held with SMDC members and Head Teachers to track progress against SAPs.
the Kusuma Ratna Fellowship (KRF) programme supports 322 fellows including a sixth cohort of 100 new Fellows. The list of Kusuma fellows are shown on pages 81 to 88.
Our Secondary School Readiness Programme (SSRP) bridges learning gaps amongst secondary students in KSPI schools by supporting students in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and Hindi/Oriya for two years. During the year, 6,100 students from Classes 9 and 10 received learning resources and participated in 7,672 SSRP sessions in both districts.
Books banks were established in all 50 KSPI schools and students from all these schools participated in educational visits and excursions.

Kusuma funded The Akshaya Patra Foundation (TAPF) to construct a centralised and fully mechanised kitchen to deliver mid-day meals to up to 100,000 children in Odisha. In July 2014, a three-year programme commenced feeding 45,000 children per day, which increased to 65,000 children in January 2015.
The Kusuma Mid-Day Meal Programme provides a free, nutritious and cooked mid-day meal in 415 schools at Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, aims to improve school enrolment, retention and classroom participation. It also prevents hunger and malnutrition, which impede childrens ability to concentrate and learn. An important part of the programme is to encourage hand washing by students and school staff to decrease illness and absenteeism.
The kitchen facilities includes boilers, rice cleaning machines, a cold storage, custom made utensils, conveyer belts and hygienic packing and cleaning facilities. Each day the kitchen can cook 5.5 tons of rice, 3.5 tons of vegetables and 1.2 tons of lentils. The food prepared in the kitchen is transported to schools using customised vans that are dust-free.
Mr Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister of Odisha, inaugurated the Mid-Day Meal Kitchen at Cuttack, Odisha, on 8 July 2014. Delegates attending the event included, Honourable Minister for Industries, School and Mass Education, Odisha, Commissioner and Secretary - School and Mass Education, Odisha, the State Nodal Officer for the Mid-Day meal programme in Odisha and the District Magistrate, Cuttack, Odisha.
