We will promote our sense of community by: Communicating with our members including the yearbook, bulletin board, annual survey, President’s letters and the annual

general meeting Providing forums for people to meet

Increasing membership within traditional boundaries to sustain the Association through the annual membership drive and the welcoming committee, (President, Past President and other designates)

Involving a broad cross section of members as volunteers Acting as a point of contact for local business, other organizations and government

Providing social events, (List of events) and, Providing the tennis courts, summer youth program and our park

Minutes of the 67th Annual General Meeting of Members 10:00 A.M. Saturday, August 30th, 2014

1. Present in Person: Richard Merritt, Joan Bayley, Patricia Dorman, Anne Campbell, Lynn Short, Steve Himel, Mary Ann Virelli, Murray Conron, Sandy Haliburton and many other members of their families

2. Quorum: Being a quorum of the members of the association entitled to vote at the meeting. With the unanimous consent of the meeting Richard Merritt took the Chair and Joan Bayley acted as Secretary of the meeting.

3. Constitution of Meeting A quorum of the members of the association entitled to vote at the meeting being present in person and notice having been sent to all persons entitled to attend the meeting, the Chair declared the meeting to be regularly constituted.

4. Minutes of 2013 AGM The members approved the minutes of the August 31, 2013 AGM as printed in the association’s yearbook.

6. Committee Reports:

Field day: (Mary-Ann Virelli)

The field day took place the day after the scheduled date due to rain, under sunny skies and cool temperatures. Attendance was good with around 100 participants. All of the regular events were executed with approximately 45 different kids taking ribbons . There was some reluctance on the part of the over 10 year olds. We had a new record set in the Wymbolwood mile by Ian Henderson @ 4:47 . Richard Merrit cooked hot dogs for all, which was appreciated. Doug Jessop was tasked with purchasing the field day prizes and ended up donating them. Thanks Doug!

Regatta: (Steve Himel)

The regatta took place on the scheduled date under clear skies and warm temperatures. Attendance was good and approximately 100 people (kids and adults) attended with approximately 50 different kids taking ribbons. We again had access to the White Surf beach thanks to Mrs. Edwards and the sand was prepared by Don Craig - we thank both very much. This year we executed the running races in the water, which seemed to be a great success and most enjoyable for the participants. As in previous years, the egg toss and the parent kid events appeared to be the most successful. The tug of war was won by the south. Many thanks to all the volunteers.

Proposed changes for next year: The ad-hoc games committee - Mary Ann Virelli, Jeff Fredricks and Steve Himel -has come up with some suggestions for a revamped summer games program. First off, we propose an integrated program called ‘The Wymbolwood Games’, which, in addition to individual scoring, would also feature a north (Orange) vs. south (Blue) component (split by the beach store). These would consist of four events: 1. Bonfire and lighting of the torch the Friday before the beach games. This would be done on the winning side of the beach (from the previous year) and the torch would be walked to the losing side while announcements (on the mega-phone) would be made from the beach instead of the road. 2. The Beach games - to be executed as in previous years 3. The Field games - to be executed as in previous years 4. The extinguishing of the flame and the official pronouncement of the winner (to be done at the corn roast)

In addition, we are proposing the following changes to the program:

• Participants will register and get name tags with north / south designation (these will be entered into the computer scoring system that we have used over the past three years and will make scoring easier).

• Local media will be invited to the events in the hopes of creating a buzz. • We are looking to add in another north vs. south event such as a baseball game or

a capture the flag. • To both beach and field events we are looking to add non-scheduled games that

can be participated in throughout the event such as the hammer drive, basket free-throw, etc..

• More ‘team’ events (two or more) will look to be added to create more interaction. • We are proposing taking out the base running event of the field day in order to

create time for these new events - there are already three other running events.

• We would like to add some ‘skill’ events such as paddle-boarding for the beach day and throwing a ball through a target for the field day.

• We would like to come up with a sort of scavenger hunt to earn points for your team.

• We would like to build a feature event for the field day that has the impact of the egg toss at beach day - lawn darts thrown at a giant water ballon was proposed.

• We will add traffic cones and signs to the Wymbolwood mile, as well as better adult supervision to make the event safer.

• We are considering adding an adult ‘bocci night’ as both a games and social event.

All of these proposals will be carefully considered in the off season. A page in the yearbook will be allocated to the event explaining it in totality and describing all of the events in detail. We welcome any volunteers and ideas for how to make this an epic event for kids and adults of all ages.

All present approved changes.

Yearbook – Steve Himel – The resolution of the printing was not as good this year due to printer error. Expect a similar layout next year Coloured pages have to be in the middle. Advertisers in the middle were there because they were in colour.

Youth Activities Program – Richard shared details of a complaint about youth camp from last year. Children’s Aid called Richard complaining about no bathroom facilities. We are not a daycare and so are not governed by the same rules, in terms of camper – supervisor ratio. Parents drop off their kids and sign a waiver agreeing to no bathroom facilities and running water.

Youth Activity Report, prepared by Anne Hanson, was presented by Pat Dorman The 2014 WBA Activity Camp was highly successful. Both of our activity leaders returned – Abby Chrzan for her second year, and Amy McNamara for her third – which meant that everything fell into place very quickly for the start of camp. The camp ran for two hours every morning – this year from July 7th until August 15. Camp started a week later this year, since the first week of July has traditionally been very quiet. However WBA’s Activity Camp enjoyed a substantial increase in attendance this summer, it is recommended that we return to the 7-week schedule for 2015. As usual, each of the six weeks was organized around themes, which then provide the direction for crafts, stories, and games.

This is the second summer in a row that there has been increased attendance at camp. Throughout July, an average of 18 children turned out on a daily basis. In August, this number jumped to an average of 22 children per day. The highest week of attendance was the first week of August, with one day seeing 32 children arrive! To manage on this particular day, everyone was corralled into the tennis court for stories, and games of soccer and dodge ball. There were five rain days this summer, but none of the extreme heat and humidity we’ve seen in other summers. Due to the increased number of camp participants, WBA invested in a second picnic table to be used for crafts, and snack time. A few days after this was delivered to the park, a second brand new picnic table magically appeared. It is believed that this second one was expertly built and delivered by Steve Medwecky and – given the increase in campers this year – couldn’t have come at a better time. We are so grateful for this generous gift. Thank you, Steve. Because there are only two counsellors, crafts were most popular (and easier to manage) when there were fewer children at camp. Between organizing materials, demonstrating crafts, and paying extra attention to the youngest campers, the counsellors were stretched when attendance reached 15 children. On these days, the counsellors made active sports games, obstacle courses, scavenger hunts, stories, songs, and insect catching the focus. Thank you to Erin McCarthy for all the enthusiasm she put into coordinating craft supplies for this summer. We couldn’t have managed without her help! Recommendations for next summer include availability of a dedicated garbage can to dispose of waste from crafts, snacks, and water bottles. This summer, the counsellors looked after the camp’s organic garbage, and craft waste was collected and stored until the end of the season. This strategy worked this year, but future summers might see more of an issue around garbage disposal, particularly if attendance continues to grow. And - growing attendance itself is an issue. Days when a large number of children came to camp, not everyone could participate in craft time, or crafts might have had to be cancelled completely. This is because the counsellors had limited time to work with and help each child and, when numbers approached 20 children, time was in short supply. For this reason, it is recommended that a Junior Leader be made available to work with the counsellors. The addition of this extra pair of hands would be a huge help to the counsellors, and increase the enjoyment of all participants. This position might be considered by someone looking for volunteer hours, or offered to someone with an eye towards training to become an Activity Leader. Perhaps a set honorarium could be offered at the end of the summer. Since numbers at camp are often unpredictable, this ‘Junior Leader’ could have the choice of returning home on days of low attendance.

The majority of parents were very comfortable with the camp’s drop-in policy, and there didn’t seem to be as much confusion as in previous years. This year, WBA printed a separate camp information bulletin, that was delivered together with the yearbook. This flyer highlighted availability of the camp for WBA members, as well as promoted the ‘come when you like’ policy. It is believed that this additional promotion contributed to increased camp attendance this summer. It is recommended that a camp flyer be produced and distributed, with the yearbook in future years. Finally, Abel Pest Control was contracted to spray for ants at the beginning of the summer. Ideally this should happen before camp starts, and the cost of spraying – about $100.00 - should be built into the camp budget for subsequent years. As of next summer, there will be a new WBA coordinator of the Activity Camp. Sylvia Faiella has agreed to take over management of this camp, and we’re looking forward to the new enthusiasm and creative ideas she’ll bring to this post. Membership: It was reported that membership numbers are consistent from year to year.

Tennis and Property: Tom Dorman noted that the tennis padlock doesn’t work. Perhaps we don’t need to lock it. We will keep the lock on the parking area. Once a year Fred Hennig comes around and blows off the tennis court. No one broke into the shed this year. Tom would like someone to take over the tennis. Darralis Collins will take over for Tom. We might need a new net next year. Dave Holwell presented the tennis tournament results. 4 people showed up this year. We need to post the time in the yearbook to encourage participation. We need a flyer to advertise the tournament and insert into the bag with the tennis tags. Add to the flyer contact information to contact other players to play over the summer. Perhaps we can add it to the Wymbolwood Games. Perhaps we could add a baseball game to the Wymbolwood Games. Add contact information to social media? Add to spring mailing an opportunity to share contact information when members order a tennis tag.

Corn Roast: The Merritt family took over coordination of the corn roast this year. It was held on the beach in front of the Snider’s cottage #644. There was a good turn out, although there were more leftovers, which were frozen and hot dogs saved for field day. The suggestion was made to invite the Ladybug Café to the corn roast to provide entertainment (a guitarist). Thank you to Frank for being the DJ.

Environment: Lynn Short reported on the Phragmites Removal Project - Summer 2014

This summer was our most successful summer to date. This is the fourth summer that I have been working with students on the beach.

This summer, I had several returning students and some very dedicated new students. In total, there were 11 students that worked with me this summer. We cleared 23 properties. Of these properties, there were 13 properties that we have been working on each summer and 10 new properties that we were clearing for the first time. We worked a total of 28 days between July 7 and August 18. The cool summer worked in our favour, making it more comfortable to be on the beach to be digging for 3 hours each day. The residents supported the students for 330 paid student hours! I had two wonderful additional supervisors that were able to work with the students when I had to be in Toronto and who also came out and volunteered their time, even when I was there. They were Daralis Collins and Gay Hendrick. I am so thankful to have their help on the beach and also helping with communication with the residents and students. Cathy Martens, the mother of one of the students, even came out and volunteered with us for a morning! Daralis and I also started to remove some of the huge Phragmites along the public access on the north side of the Wymbolwood Lodge property. There are beautiful shrub willows hidden in the Phragmites that we were able to expose.

I am so excited about the progress we have made over the last three years with the control of this invasive species. More people are becoming aware of this species and are recognising the importance of controlling it on our beach. I have also been invited to Woodland Beach this summer to give workshops to the residents about how to control Phragmites on their beach. They are trying to follow our example, informing people about the plant, organizing volunteers to remove large stands of the plant, and even beginning to hire students to help out with the removal. Hopefully, they will start to see success in controlling this plant in the next few years. There are two programs that I would like to make you aware of: The Green Ribbon Champion program that recognises wise coastal stewardship has just been started this summer. It is meant to raise awareness of responsible stewardship of properties on the beach. Their summer intern, Dillon Bellisle, has made observations and collected data at our public access points along the beach to consider improvements of the ecosystem. There is another program that is trying to raise awareness of the extent of the problem of Phragmites in Ontario. You may see red signs with “PHRAG” on them pointing to patches of Phragmites along Hwy 400 and Hwy 26. Colin Dobell has created a program to raise awareness of the plants along roadways and a website, www.stoptheinvasion.ca, which contains information about Phragmites. You can register on the website and, if you have an I-phone or Android device, you can download and App that allows you to register every patch of Phragmites that you see with its photo and location. The goal of this project is to map the extent of the spread of this plant and use it to communicate the necessity of controlling this plant province wide to the authorities.

Water testing showed the water was safe for swimming all summer. Bruce Conron organized the collection of water samples every Monday for 9 weeks. The water level is up.

Neighborhood Watch: Dave Sparrow has resigned as coordinator. Eleanor Bohnet will take over. Need a volunteer from the north end and middle of Wymbolwood beach.

Advertising: Dave Sparrow resigns, but is willing to have a replacement person shadow him. The Family of the Year Trophy needs to be awarded to another family. Right now it is in Dave Sparrow’s possession.

Richard reported on the Summation of the 2013/14 Directors’ Meetings held during the year. They were via telephone conference. The Book Swap was removed from the events of the summer. Beach ownership was discussed. Parking spots were made (township is more restrictive about giving out parking permits) at the park.

Financial Statements

The Treasurer Kathryn From had prepared a report which Pat Dorman presented to the meeting, outlining the financial statements of the Association containing the balance sheet of the Association as at September 30, 2013 and the statement of excess of revenue over expenses for the year then ended, together with the report thereon of the Association’s accountant. She went through the various statements in detail and described some of the accounting policies, current and proposed.

Revenue

2014 revenue increased by $1,800 or 9.5%, because of a nice increase in advertising revenue (a big thank you to Dave Sparrow!). Advertising revenue jumped 29% from $6118 to $7930. In addition, Dave managed to collect 100% of all monies owed – outstanding! One ad did not run in the yearbook and was therefore refunded ($30). Membership revenue stayed constant, and the slight decrease in youth activity donations was offset by members paying 2013 unpaid dues and buying additional yearbooks. Tennis revenue is steady. Interest revenue stayed the same.

While expenses are not completely finalized, overall they are largely consistent from 2013. Our biggest expense, the yearbook, showed a minimal increase in expense. Youth activities showed a slight drop in expense, likely because the camp ran for one less week than the prior year. Insurance costs increased to reflect more comprehensive liability insurance. We are still waiting for all expenses related to Regatta and Field Day to be tabulated, however they are expected to be consistent with last year. This year we paid an outstanding expense from 2011 and 2012 related to handing out popsicle and freezie coupons to kids at these events – the total was nominal (agreed to $35) and the beach store generously did not charge us for coupons redeemed in 2013. Park expenses included spraying for pests, as well as the purchase of a new picnic table, already put to good use at both Youth Activities and at Field Day. Professional expenses such as accounting are expected to remain the same.

Excess of Revenue over Expenditures As a result of the increase in advertising revenue and steady expenses, we project that we will have an excess of revenue over expenses of approximately $2400 once expenses are finalized, an increase of $1,400 over 2013. Funds restricted for tennis court resurfacing will be approximately $1,400, resulting in a net increase of $1,000 to our surplus. As advertising revenue can vary from year to year, the surplus will be added to our net assets to safeguard against shortfalls in future years. The WBA’s assets as of Aug 28, 2014 are as follows:

- $11,425 restricted for gypsy moth fund

- $5,231 restricted for tennis court resurfacing

- $7,264 surplus – this is expected to drop slightly when all expenses are finalized

Appointment of Accountant: Pat Dorman reported that the Association’s auditors, S & C Partners LLP, had done a good job for the Association in this capacity at a reasonable price. On motion duly made (Richard Merritt), seconded (Pat Dorman) and unanimously carried, the following resolution was passed: RESOLVED that S & C Partners LLP, Chartered Accountants are hereby appointed accountants of the Association to hold office until the close of the next annual meeting at a remuneration to be fixed by the directors, the directors being hereby authorized to fix such remuneration.

Retirement and Nomination of Directors: The Chair then stated that it was in order to proceed with the election of directors and declared the meeting open for nominations. Retiring: Jody Hauer, Anne Hanson On motion duly made (Bob McBride), seconded (Bruce Conron) and unanimously carried, the following special resolution was passed: RESOLVED that the number of directors be and it is hereby fixed at 14. Richard Merritt led a discussion about the directors and invited nominations or volunteers. The following were nominated: Joan Bayley, Kathryn From, RICHARD Merritt, Steve Himel, Anne Campbell, Lynn Short, Steve Medwecky, Jeff Fredricks, Pat Dorman, Murray Conron, Mary-Ann Verelli, Sandy Haliburton, Brian Bradstreet, Sylvia Faiella There being no further nominations the Chair declared nominations closed and directed the Secretary of the meeting to cast a single ballot for the election of those nominated. Such a ballot having been cast, the Char then declared those nominated to be duly elected directors of the Association, to hold office until the next annual election of directors or until their successors are elected or appointed. Richard acknowledged the work and contribution of Jody Hauer and Anne Hanson who did not stand for re-election as directors of the Association.

Presentation by Paul Rosenberg – Plan 779 Tiny Township, Wymbolwood Beach Shoreline ownership issue: Precipitated by Edwards wanting to clarify her ownership to the water’s edge. Township applied to gain control of the beach with a 60 foot road allowance from the high water line. 60 out of 66 cottages have joined the defence from Dunsford Lane north to the end of Wymbolwood. 9 out of the 10 cottages have joined the Dunsford Lane defence: separate from the Goessman reserve because if the Lane is extended they would have no beach front. Tied into the ownership of lot 19, to the west of those cottages. September 16 is the court date for our defence to be heard. In Barrie at the Supreme Courthouse. They will set dates. Dunsford motel – application to have it rezoned and subdivided for 4 homes. This is on hold with the surveyor general. Property is for sale again. Beach Association supports in theory, but cannot support financially the defence of beach ownership. Thank you to Paul for updating all, especially the south beach owners who will likely face the same issue soon. On motion duly made, seconded and unanimously carried, the following resolution was passed: RESOLVED that the Association support its member’s attempts to defend ownership and rights to beach ownership. Environmental concerns if the road were to be put in along the beach. The township has weed wacked the beach, cutting the Phragmites plus the good willows and sedges, leaving the debris. Shore owners in the Township of Tae pay 90% of the taxes.

FOTTSA: politically, FOTTSA has taken some action. 3 or 4 candidates for council have been identified that support beach ownership by the cottagers. FOTTSA is in a position to try and help them. FOTTSA can let association members know who are the preferred candidates. We have about $21,000 to spend on a campaign. We are close to making a decision on this.

NEW BUSINESS: Would it be appropriate to share updates on the Wymbolwood Beach website? Paul Rosenberg will send his summary to Murray Conron to post on the website. Some concern was raised with kite board lessons given on the beach, and kites coming very close to kids playing on the beach. Call the OPP and they will come. Website renewal: There is a cost to maintain it and Blair Flemming will take care of it. Steve Medwecky built the new picnic table that is at the ball diamond. Thanks Steve!

It was truly amazing being on the beach the weekend of April 17 - 19. On Friday night there was Ice as far as the eye could see and by Sunday there were only bits of Ice floating on the wind swept water. It reminded me of what an amazing place Wymbolwood is and how dramatic the changes to the landscape can be.

It has been my love of the time spent up here that has motivated me to help with the

yearbook and the Wymbolwood Games over the past few years, and I have enjoyed every minute. This is my third year putting this book together, and each year I have really enjoyed going through the photos and articles submitted - recalling the summer past and anticipating the summer to come. However, having done this now a few times, I find myself wishing that more people

Dear friends and neighbours of Wymbolwood Beach,

It is a very Canadian thing to start off a newsletter or communication with commentary about the weather, but since it impacts many of the things we do in our daily lives, I find myself doing it year after year. In keeping with that theme, although this past winter was another long and cold one, it had many highlights including allowing us to make a great rink on the Credit River near our house. I hope this winter, like the winter of 2014, helps to restore the water level in the lake.

The WBA Board of Directors has been busy planning this season’s events. Please see the calendar for dates and details, including the Wymbolwood Summer Games.

Thank you to Steve Himel for putting together this year’s edition of the yearbook. As you enjoy your time at the beach, please remember to take some pictures and forward them to him. Also, please support our advertisers and mention you saw their ad as, without them, this yearbook would not be possible.

This is my fourth summer as President and also my last as it is time for me pass the torch to someone new. I have enjoyed my time getting involved in the activities and getting to meet many of the members that make Wymbolwood Beach such a great place. If you are interested in getting involved, or becoming a director, please contact me or any of the other directors. We are always looking for volunteers and new ideas to help keep the association strong and the membership engaged.

WBA Activity Camp If you’re a kid, one of the best things about being on Wymbolwood Beach has got to be the free morning Activity Camp. It’s one of the best ways to meet other kids from the beach, and every day offers up an exciting new mix of stories, games, and crafts.

This camp is open exclusively to all WBA members, and their guests. No registration is necessary. Simply show up at 10:00 a.m., sign in (first time only), and enjoy two hours of fun and games (or relaxation, if you’re the parent!).

Each summer, WBA staffs the camp with two experienced Activity Leaders, who are also first aid certified. This year, we are fortunate to have two returning Leaders – one for the second time, and the other for her third year.

Everything is provided for your child except for hats, sunscreen, and snacks. But please note that there are no washroom facilities or running water available in the park.

And since the camp is free, and registration is not required, it is impossible to predict how many children will participate each day. Some days there might be two or three attendees, other days could see ten or more. For this reason, leaving a child at the WBA Activity Camp is solely at the discretion of the parent or caretaker.

The WBA Activity Camp is not intended to serve as a daycare or more formal daycamp, but rather as a no-charge, drop-in spot for children between the ages of 3 to 11. Parents are more than welcome to stay in the park for the duration of the morning’s program.

This was the fourth summer that this project has been running. It was the most successful season so far. It would not be possible without the dedicated help from the students and adult volunteers!

Last summer, there were several returning students and some new students. In total, there were 11 students that worked over the summer. We cleared 23 properties, 13 of which we have worked on in past summers and 10 new properties that we cleared for the first time.

The students worked 28 days, for 3 hours a day, between July

7 and August 18. The residents supported the students for a total of 330 paid student hours! Besides me, there were two additional adult supervisors, Daralis Collins and Gay Hendrick, helping on days that I

was not able and sometimes volunteering with me just for the exercise

and sunshine! ☺

Upon reflection over the past few years since the Phragmites Removal Project began, I am very excited about the progress that we have made on controlling the spread of Phragmites.

More people on the beach are becoming aware of the threat that this plant poses to natural ecosystems and are working towards removing it from their property. A walk along the beach today shows evidence of this strong commitment to keeping Wymbolwood Beach beautiful and healthy. A wide variety of

native plant species and animals are returning to the beach, making it a more interesting place to enjoy and play.

Wymbolwood: Our Changing Beachfront The extreme storms of last fall and recent rising water level have transformed our beachfront. Sand has been thrown up higher on the beach. Some vegetation has been uprooted or covered over with sand. The beach is narrower than it has been in the past.

Eroded Beach Path For this reason a beach is called a “Dynamic Ecosystem”. It is always changing. The plants and animals are well adapted to this kind of change. The spring will be a time of regrowth. We should be aware of this and accept the changes without trying to engineer things back to “the way they were”, with one exception!

The storm has uprooted and distributed pieces of Phragmites over large areas of the beach. These pieces have the potential

of taking root where they have never been before. It is important to look over your beach front and remove any pieces that you find before they begin to grow and multiply. They can be dried and burned or placed in your weekly garbage.

What to look for: Rhizomes (underground roots) of Phragmites on the sand surface

There are also some interesting phenomena that I have seen on the beach this spring. At first glance, they may be interpreted as pollution appearing on the beach. They are, in fact, natural phenomena that are a result of the action of harmless anaerobic bacteria in the water. These bacteria get energy by metabolizing minerals that are present in the water. These bacteria have been present for millions of years and they present no threat to human health.

Have you seen an oily sheen on the surface of small pools on the beach? This is the result of iron- or manganese-loving bacteria found in water-logged soils. They are anaerobic bacteria which live in low oxygen environments. They produce methane, which evaporates and some larger hydrocarbons, similar to gas or oil, that float on the surface of the water.

(Remember that oil or gas deposits were formed from layers of ancient decomposing plants and bacteria long ago.) This oily sheen on the water surface is a natural phenomenon and has no petroleum odour.

Rusty Coloured Slime

Have you seen Orange or Rusty Coloured Slime in small pools is streams on the beach? This is the result of iron-loving bacteria metabolizing the iron found in the water that is coming up from the sand in order to obtain energy for life processes. They oxidize the ferrous iron compounds found in the groundwater converting them to ferric oxide (rust). This is not soluble in the water and appears as a gelatinous rust coloured slime. This is also a natural phenomenon and is not harmful to human health.

Our WBA website www.wymbolwood.ca has been up and running since 2006. Besides being a place where you will find all the Association News and mailout materials, survey and order forms, the site posts articles and links to Huronia news, weather, local attractions, environmental concerns, and history. We post any news item there that comes to our attention as newsworthy to beach residents and visitors to Wymbolwood. We even generously post a link to the Wymbolwood Beach Bums Club on Facebook.

Our site now gets an average 6 visitors per day. The more WBA members contribute, the more appealing and rewarding will be your visits to the website. To that end, all beach residents are encouraged to send in new photos from our regattas, field days, golf, and other charity events, and share their anecdotal cottage experience. More recently, we have introduced a Community Bulletin Section where you may post notices or reply to them. For example, you may wish to post a Help Wanted ad for summer help in maintaining the cottage lot, or conversely advertise your services to others. You may upload some of this material yourself, or more usually, email this material to the attention of the webmaster, Murray Conron at [email protected]

The McBride family is sad to share the news that our matriarch -- Jean McBride -- passed away at the age of 88 on February 11, 2015. Mom was a long-time member of the Wymbolwood Beach Association… first visiting the beach at a cottage rented by her father and mother – Norman and Edith Coates – in the 1940’s. After her dad purchased the cottage at 696 in 1957, he insisted that Mom and her sister join him there for several long lazy summers with their kids. My dad and uncle would come up for the weekends. Mom loved everything about life at the beach… especially the inevitable closeness of family life there. Mom would walk the beach almost every day during the summer months, teach the kids how to play to the point of exhaustion in the big waves, sit out on the patio in the late afternoon reading the latest novel, and snuggle up by the fireplace in the centre room in the cool of the evening. Over 58 years, the cottage passed from Grandfather to Mom and Dad, and then on to Lynn and me. Appreciation of the great pleasure and privilege of cottage life has become deeply rooted in us all, including Mom’s grandchildren and great grandchildren. Although Dad and the rest of us miss her terribly, joyful memories of Mom can be found in every corner of the cottage and in every treasured old artifact which it holds.

Everybody Loves The Beach

Thursday morning, Aug. 21, beach users at Allenwood Beach (a few kilometres south of Wymbolwood) spotted a moose on shore. The animal left the beach and swam into Georgian Bay soon after it was spotted. The beach goer reported the sighting to Ontario Parks, and staff went to the scene to confirm the moose sighting. Emily Robinson, an employee on contract with Ontario Parks at Wasaga Beach, confirmed it was a moose. "When I saw the tracks, there was no question," she said. It is extremely rare for a moose to be so far south in Ontario. Moose prefer colder temperatures and don't like to live around deer habitat.
