Wymbolwood:  A Leaf From The Past

My father, Ronald Robinson and my mother Emily were instrumental, with the great help of many others, with the launching and continuity of the beach association, starting in the 50’s. !Father got together with other beach owners to talk, and there was a common interest in wanting to have fun and be active. As a result they started holding events. !There were 2 social nights held at Wymbolwood Lodge, thanks to the Dunsfords. The meet and greet Hi Neighbour Night and also a Masquerade dance. Some of the kids would sing and dance, watched by delighted parents. (TV was lousy back then. We had a great turnout.) Also the Regatta and Field Day got underway. !The Regatta had some interesting events including a canoe race where you had to stand on the gunnels and paddle with pie plates. The swim and run race involved a deep water start with a rush to the finish line high in the soft dunes. The wheelbarrow race was one guy one gal, (how politically

incorrect) with the guy on the bottom. Holding was by the ankles only. No fair holding above the knee for leverage. !A favorite of mine was the egg toss. Finally we could break something without getting into trouble. But the chance of injury started to weight heavy on the directors, so some of the riskier stuff was phased out. The highlights were treats donated by Edith and Al Percival of St Clair Ice Cream Company, whose cottage is still in the family, the Bayleys, and who are still contributing volunteers. !The Field Day was moved to the present ball park, enjoying land donated by the Dunsfords. My sister Heather would always win the nail driving. !There were long spikes pounded into a log held on saw horses while the entire crowd counted.

She would wale the life out of that spike and sink it in three huge hits. I resolved to stay on her good side. !There were

even prizes, including ribbons and toys donated by Irwin Toy. Amazing amount of work for the volunteers for sure, but very rewarding for the rest. Trophies

were acquired, and of course, that heated up the competition. !My father Ron loved competition. Now it was not just playing around but points towards the trophy. Serious stuff. Mother noticed that there were many kids around with not much to do to keep them out of trouble, so enter the Beach Club. Two hours at the Wymbolwood Lodge each weekday morning for games, competitions, and crafts. !Raffia baskets, and alphabet name tags, and gimp bracelets, and painting. Over the years, the little kids grew up and became counselors, so it was a worthwhile activity for all ages. Other activities appeared over the years, sailing, horseshoes, shuffleboard, tennis. The badminton was eliminated. The birds kept getting blown away. !Our association is still there, creating fun and fellowship, but the underlying vital calling remains strong, keeping an eye on factors that might impact the preservation of the beach for the future. !So far, I am sure the originals would agree, we have been very good stewards of this wonderful natural resource. Coral Robinson !

Wymbolwood Online

Our WBA website www.wymbolwood.ca has been up and running since 2006. Besides being a place where you will find all the Association News and mailout materials, survey and order forms, the site posts articles and links to Huronia news, weather, local attractions, environmental concerns, and history. We post any news item there that comes to our attention as newsworthy to beach residents and visitors to Wymbolwood. We even generously post a link to the Wymbolwood Beach Bums Club on Facebook.

Our site now gets an average 6 visitors per day. The more WBA members contribute, the more appealing and rewarding will be your visits to the website. To that end, all beach residents are encouraged to send in new photos from our regattas, field days, golf, and other charity events, and share their anecdotal cottage experience. More recently, we have introduced a Community Bulletin Section where you may post notices or reply to them. For example, you may wish to post a Help Wanted ad for summer help in maintaining the cottage lot, or conversely advertise your services to others. You may upload some of this material yourself, or more usually, email this material to the attention of the webmaster, Murray Conron at [email protected]

We look forward to all submissions.

It is with sincere regret that we report the death of: Donato Aquino Christina Groot Robert Douglas

Standing members of the Wymbolwood Beach Association

Back Cover Photo Contest

Submit your best Wymbolwood photos for back cover consideration. Creative, surprising, interesting, whatever!

!I took this picture through the window of a full moon over a winter beach and was

surprised to find how the indoor lights seemed to light up an outdoor tree !

The photos will be judged by a panel of directors and the winner(s) will grace the back cover of future yearbooks
