G'day again punters and I hope you all got through the day of silence without

too much fuss. I think the concept of a day of silence is great and maybe a few

other places around the world should adopt something similar to help clear up

the skies a little. At first I found it a bit strange to think that the powers that be,

would shut down a complete system for just one day including the airport. I

mean let's think about it to an unsuspecting traveller having a complete city shut

down would seem like a bit of a waste of quality holiday time, but after so many

years of being here you kind of look forward to a few days of quiet and relaxing atthe pool or in front of the tele. Let's face it, the world wouldn't be a very good

place if we were all the same would it??

It was a crappy weekend just gone in the NAB cup as Collingwood lost to Brisbane, so I won't be talking about footy now

until the season starts in two weeks. Be sure to get in and grab your spot in the Kuta Townhouses Tipping contest before the

first bounce. Karn the Pies. We did get a letter from one of our many loyal readers this week which I will share with you all.

    The letter is as follows:

    Hello Aliasj,

I read your page every week without fail and always look forward to seeing what you have to say about Bali each week.A while ago you wrote about the amount of rubbish that is left laying around the island and how the people in charge

are trying very hard to keep the place clean which was a very good story. I am a long time visitor to the island and bringmy wife and kids here every year at least two or maybe three times.

My family and I had a few things to do for our last day here so we went and did the last minute shopping thing during

which we stopped and had a bite to eat and a coffee to relax a little and cool down and while we sat and waited for ourlunch I observed a tourist who looked like he was from Australia eating something while wondering down the street.

After he had finished what looked like a burger he simply walked over to the roadside and trying very hard to be discreet, threw his food wrapper directly onto the street at the gutter and continued on his way.

I question you this, how is the council of Bali supposed to keep the place clean if we as tourists do exactly what we aretaught not to at home and throw our garbage where ever we want instead of using the bin?? I found it disgraceful that a

fellow Aussie did this while on the lovely island with these lovely people and hope that you can maybe draw someattention to reminding all the tourists that come here to act as grown up while they are on holidays. Thankyou again for

the fantastic articles each week and good luck. Keith & Sue from Perth.

Thanks for the letter Keith and yes you are correct with many of the tourists that come here not doing the right thing and

putting their rubbish in a bi n. To say that they are all Aussies would be incorrect as I'm thinking that all walks of life that

travel here are on occasion forgetting to do the righty. I guess you can tell an Australian by the Bintang tank top and braided

hair which is a dead giveaway, and sometimes you will see the younger ones walking the street with a beer in hand much

too early in the morning for me. At the end of the day, No matter where you come from you must always be sure to dump

your rubbish in a bin and not just throw it out to the street when you are done. We all need to be part of the solution and

not be the problem. Bali is a magnificent island and its people cater for tourists very well, so while you are here, you must

try to do the right thing and lead by example, in this instance if that means putting your rubbish in the bin then please just

do it. Maybe the powers that be can investigate an on the spot fine for litter bugs and run it the same as they run the little

parking doods outside many busy shopping centres. My guess is they willearn more from the li tter fines than the parking charges. Thanks again

for the letter and please keep them coming.

Ok folks I think that's enough for one week and it might be time to go do

something different and kick back, relax and have a few quiet ones in a

shady spot for a while. I hope the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy

and always remember, If you can't explain it simply, then you don't

    understand it well enough.

    Enjoy your week, ALIASJ..

JIMBARANJ imbaran is just south of the airport and Kuta. This

was formerly a real backwater of south Bali, just a tinyfishing village with a daily market. That all started tochange in the 1980s and J imbaran is now home to severalworld class 5 star beach resorts, plus a few moremoderate mid-market hotels.

There is however little in the way of budget

accommodation and there are also many high-end villas inthis area, particularly on the ridges of high ground above

J imbaran Bay. This has resulted in monikers such as the"Beverly Hills of Bali" or "Millionaire's Row".

The bay itself has a pleasant white sand beachand is very safe for swimming. The three clusters of grilledseafood restaurants on the beach are a major tourist drawin the evenings, as is the truly stunning sunset.

J imbaran is also home to a Norwegian University,Gateway College, with around 500 students studyingathletics, philosphy, culture, economics and journalism.

The school is located in Kedonganan close to Sari SegaraResort and in J l, Bantas Kau where it also has a small cafe.

J imbaran has an increasing number of rather chicshops but there is little or no nightlife here. It has theadvantage of being a little closer to Kuta and Seminyakand the cultural highlights of Central Bali.

    BALI, LOCATION TO SUIT EVERYONE

    THE BUKIT

Much has been written about this dusty, aridand rugged area, which forms the southernmost tip of the island.

Limestone cliffs of up to 100 meters in

height provide some of the best views in theworld, along with some deserted white sandybeaches.

Everyone wants a piece of this are, frominternational hotel chains such as Bvlgari,Versace and Banyan Tree, to establishedresidential villa developers looking for thatperfect plot. The area offers secluded beaches, and exclusivity to name but a few reasons whythis is fast becoming the place to be.

Prices have more than tripled in thearea over last 2 years alone with still plenty ofpotential to be realized, so now is a plan. Only ashort 15 minutes drive fromthe international airport, The Bukit is fast beingreferred to as the new Millionaires Row.

Sanur is Bali's oldest upscale resort area and is a mature beach-side town. Despite the abundance of restaurants andaccommodation, it has a quiet and relaxed feel to it. In generalterms, it is more expensive than Kuta but cheaper thanSeminyak. Sanur tends to appeal most to middle-aged and olderfamilies, especially Europeans.

The Sanur area is sandwiched between the main J alan Ngurah Rai

bypass and the beach. One main route called J alan Danau Tamblingan runsnorth to south through the town and it is easy to orient yourself withreference to this road.

Sanur is a 20 minute taxi ride from the Ngurah Rai International

Sanur is a town on the east coast of South Bali.Airport, and a pre-paid

coupon costs Rp 95,000. Thereare plenty of metered taxis all overthe island who will be keen to takeyou to Sanur.

If you are driving yourself, this is one of the morestaightforward areas of Bali to findas the main J alan Bypass NgurahRai is the western boundary ofSanur. There are many wellsignposted exit points from thismain road into the heart of Sanur.Allow about 20 minutes drivingtime from Kuta or Legian, about 30minutes from Seminyak or Ubudand 10 to 15 minutes fromDenpasar.

Sanur is well serviced byshuttle buses and bemos from thenorth and south and also fromDenpasar's Tegal terminal. Thebus company Perama has itsSanur office in Jalan Hangtuah, and offers direct transfer here from

Candidasa, Kuta, Lovina, PadangBai and Ubud. Private shuttlebuses run from most major touristcentres of Bali to Sanur; checklocal advertising and always book24 hours in advance.

There's also a free busservice called Trans Sarbagita thatruns following route Term. BatuBulan (Gianyar) - Tohpati (DPS) -Sanur (DPS) - Kuta Central Park(Badung) - J imbaran (Badung) -Nusa Dua (Badung). It's free till31st of August 2012 as pergovernment funded program.

J alan Danau Tamblingan, the main street in Sanur, has anumber of outlets for cars,

motorbikes and bicycle rental. Alarge number of metered taxispatrol the streets looking forpassengers. Local bemos run withsome regularity up and down both

J alan Danau Tamblingan andJ alan Danau Poso.

Sanur is also a great placeto walk. Distances are not large, the streets are relatively quiet, andthere is a splendid, paved beachfront path which runs the wholelength of the district.

Enshrined StupidityEstonian Couple CaughtHaving Sex in a BalineseTemple Tell Bali Police TheyDidn't Know that Sex inPublic Places Was Againstthe Law

    Widely reported in both the

Bali local and international mediaare an Estonian couple taken intocustody in Bali after they werediscovered having intimaterelations inside the grounds ofMengening Temple nearSaraseda, Tampaksiring.

The Island's templesare deemed to be sanctifiedplaces of purity by BaliHindus where any of arange of impure acts, including sexual relations, can bring the subject placeof worship into disreputeand threaten the safety andw e l l b e i n g o f t h e

surrounding community. When he heard of the

    i n c i d e n t i n v o l v i n gEstonians Urmas Silman(43) and his wife KatrinSilman (32), a member ofthe Indonesian TouristPromotion Board (BPPI),Nyoman Kandia, said,They (the Estonian couple) mustreceive an appropriatepun i shment , i nc lud ingdeportation. This is needed tomake an example of them for alltourists visiting Bali.

Kandia said that suchbehaviour is intolerable and

should be punished both by thecentral government and inaccordance with traditional law.

A professor of law at Bali'sUdayana University, Professor Dr.IGN Wairocana saw the couple'saction as an insult to all BalineseHindus, adding: This case can bedeveloped into criminal charges. If traditional sanctions (awig-awig) cannot not be brought tobear because they are foreigners,

at the very least they shouldbe reported to their embassy orconsulate.

Wairocana said that in orderto restore the sanctity of thetemple, the regency of Gianyarshould pay the cost of theelaborate religious ceremoniesthis entails. Let's not have everytourist in Bali and who commits asimilar act be able to claim theydidn't know such acts are wrong. The police must take firmactions."

T h e c o u p l e w e r ediscovered at mid-day by thechairman of the Sareseda Banjar,Wayan Agus Dharmaputra, whowas inspecting recent repairscarried out on the temple.Dharmaputra said he caught thetwo having sex inside the temple. He raised the alarm with the local

village and the two escorted to therelative safety of the local policestations by the angry crowd.

The coup le, prio r toengaging in sex within the temple, had bathed in the temples holywaters.

The couple told the policethey were unaware of laws andtraditions against engaging in sexin public places or places ofreligious worship. After prolonged

discussions at the policestation, the couple agreed todonate Rp. 20 million (US$2,000)towards the cost of theceremonies now required torededicate the temples.

Local religious experts arein agreement that the actual costof the required ceremonies will farexceed the compensation paid bythe Estonians.

When he learned of theincident, the former regent ofGianyar and chairman of the

Indonesian Hotel andRestaurant Association,Dr. Tjokorda Oka ArthaArdana Sukawati (CokAce), said he deeplyregretted what hadhappened. He suggestedthat all parties should learnand visitors to Balineseshould all be briefed on theparameters of acceptablebehaviour at places ofreligious importance.

Many Bal inesetemples post signs at theirentrances, warning visitorsin an impure state not toenter the temple grounds. This is normally seen as an

entry prohibition against people ina state of mourning due to arecent death in their immediatefamily or against menstruatingwomen. While warnings do notspecifically state that acts of sexare forbidden on temple grounds, most nations, includingIndonesia, have laws on publicdecency.

According to DenstuCommunication Institute, Inc.Estonia ranks as one of the leastreligious countries in the world, with 75.7% of its populationclaiming to be irreligious that isto say, indifferent or hostile toreligion. A 2005 toll said only 16%of all Estonians profess a belief ina god.

Autumn is the time of yearmost associated with bumpercrops of new babies, andaccording to an Israeli studythere may be a scientificreason for it: human spermare genera l l y a t the i r

    healthiest in winter and earlyspring.

Based on samples from morethan 6,000 men treated for infertility, researchers writing in AmericanJ ournal of Obstetrics & Gynaecologyfound sperm in greater numbers, withfaster swimming speeds and fewerabnormalities in semen made duringthe winter, with a steady decline inquality from spring onward.

"The winter and spring semenpatterns are compatible withincreased fecund ability and may be aplausible explanation of the peaknumber of deliveries during the fall,"wrote lead researcher Eliahu Levitasfrom Ben-Gurion University of the

Negev in Beer-Sheva.If there is a seasonal pattern, they said, that knowledge may "be ofparamount importance, especially incouples with male-related infertilitystruggling with unsuccessful andprolonged fertility treatments."

For the new study, Levitas andhis colleagues collected and analyzed6.455 semen samples from men at

their fertility clinic betweenJ anuary 2006 and J uly 2009. Ofthose, 4,960 were found to havenormal sperm production, and 1,495had abnormal production, such aslow sperm counts.

    T h e W o r l d H e a l t hOrganization defines anything over

16 million sperm per millilitre ofsemen as a normal sperm count.Taking into account the

approximately 70 days it takes for thebody to produce a sperm cell, theresearchers found that men withnormal sperm production had thehealthiest sperm in the winter.

For example, those menproduced about 70 million sperm permillilitre of semen during the winter.About 5 percent of those sperm had"fast" motility, or swimming speed, which improves a couple's chance ofgetting pregnant.

Th at compare d to theapproximately 68 million sperm permillilitre the men produced in thespring, of which only about 3 percent

were "fast."For men with abnormal sperm

production, however, the patterndidn't hold. Those men showed aslight trend toward better motilityduring the fall and made the largestpercentage of normal shaped spermabout 7 percent during the spring.

"Based on our results the(normal) semen will perform better in

winter, whereas infertility casesrelated to low sperm counts should beencouraged to choose spring and fall,"the researchers wrote.

Previous studies, mostly inanimals, have found similar results inline with those species' breedingseasons, said Edmund Sabanegh, a

urologist who was not involved with thenew research."The hard part of this is really

sorting out what factor is accounting forthis," said Sabanegh, the chairman ofthe urology department at Ohio'sCleveland Clinic.

In animal studies, seasonalchanges in sperm production andfertility have been linked to factorsranging from temperature, to length ofdaylight exposure and hormonevariations.

Among people, previousresearch has found that sperm countsaround the world are falling. While noone knows why, theories range from amore sedentary lifestyle to chemicalsin the environment that affect sperm

    health.Sabanegh said he doesn't think

doctors will start telling men with lowsperm counts to wait until the winter orspring to try to conceive a child.

"We would continue toencourage them to try regardless ofthe season, and they may benefit frominterventions or treatments."

Uate stars in Knights' thrashing of Tigersconversions and two penalty goals. The Tigers' points came via tries to Adam Blair and

Tim Moltzen, while Benji Marshall added a loneconversion.

The visitors actually started brightly and openedthe scoring after five minutes when Blair powered overfrom close range.

But it proved to be their only high point in an abject

display, as the Knights ripped them apart in a sizzling 50-minute period that saw them score seven tries.

A minute's silence was impeccably observed bythe 21,935 crowd for former Tigers under 20s playerMosese Fotuaika, who passed away recently, and itappeared to motivate Potter's side early in the match.

But the Knights, inspired by Uate and two formerBrisbane Broncos in Darius Boyd and Gagai, tookcontrol to effectively seal the victory before half-time.

Ex-New South Wales winger McManus dived overin the 10th minute after hauling in a fine cut-out passfrom Boyd and the Queensland star looked to haveincreased the advantage only to spill the ball as hecrossed the line.

But that proved to be a minor aberration whenUate started and finished the move for the second four-pointer.

The Blues star caught the ball on his own 10-metreline, shrugged off three feeble tackles as he raced 50metres and was then on hand to pick out Gagai's pass togo over in the right corner.

Gagai then scored two quick-fire tries with Gidleykicking four goals to open up a 24-6 lead at the break.

The second stanza followed a similar pattern withthe Knights dominating as the Tigers fell apart, giving uptwo more Uate tries within nine minutes of the re-start.

McManus added his second just before the hour-mark when he outjumped the diminutive Matt Utai andgrabbed J arrod Mullen's kick with Gidley's conversionbringing up the 40-point mark.

Moltzen stretched to score on the siren to give theTigers a late consolation.

The Knights' promising start was tempered by awrist injury to Mullen, who left the field midway in the

    second period.

Akuila Uate crossed for a hat-trick, asNewcastle thrashed Wests Tigers 42-10to close out round one of the NRL atHunter Stadium.

    Dear Martha,

Not sure how to deal with this issue. I have been seeing thisguy for almost a year now he is almost a live-in at my villa. He has a lot of personal stuff at my place. A few weeks ago Isaw three condoms in his back pack in an open pocket.A few days later we are both in my room, and I notice himzipping that particular pocket. I did not say anything at thattime. This past weekend, I went away for the weekend. He plannedan evening out with friends on Friday. He told me about hisweekend and evening out. When he left, I could not hold back from checking if thecondoms where still there. All three were gone.Since them I am questioning this fact. I know he has cheatedon some of his past girlfriends.Did he take them out of his bag at his home so I do see themand question if he is faithful?Did he give them to his friend with whom he stayed allweekend since he was seeing his girl on Saturday?Should I bring this up? Will I seem paranoid? All I am sure of is that I do not want to have a cheatingboyfriend. He says he loves me, seems to love me, is with me most ofthe time, he says he spends all his time with me because thatit where he wants to be. He kept texting me he missed methroughout the weekend. How should I deal with this situation?Michele

    Dear Michele,

Missing condoms don't always mean cheating dear. There are atleast two other explanations. The first is he thought he mightpersuade you into sex outside the home and tucked a fewcondoms in his bag in the hope it was going to happen on the back

of a bus, or movie theatre or alocal park. The second is hegets himself off at work or awayfrom home and likes to keepthings, ahem, tidy.In the let's be clear about a fewthings.Did he take them out of his bagat his home so I do see themand question if he is faithful? No, he didn't. There is noearthly reason a man would want to create a storm of bad ju ju likethis in his own home.Did he give them to his friend with whom he stayed all weekendsince he was seeing his girl on Sa turday? No. Blokes of a certainage don't do that for each otherunless they are members of avirgin cult and will get in trouble for buying their own. They're not15. It's not 1962. A man can buy his own condoms.Should I bring this up? Will I seem paranoid? You might seemparanoid but you will need to bring it up eventually. The problemfor you is if he's guilty he will probably spin you a story so youhave to be able to know he's spinning a story because you'vebeen counting condoms or have collected other evidence or justbe good at seeing through bulls**He says he loves me, seems to love me, is with me most of thetime, he says he spends all his time with me because that it wherehe wants to be. He kept texting me he missed me throughout theweekend.G uys can love their girlfriend and still cheat. I don'tknow why but they do. His attentiveness is not a sign he is notcheating. It might even mean he was guilty. But it also doesn'tmean he is.

"Down Under" (also known as "Land Down Under") is a

Platinum-certified single recorded by Australian New Wave rockgroup Men at Work. It was initially released in October 1981 as thesecond single from their debut albumBusiness as Usual (1981).

The song went to number one in their home country ofAustralia in December 1981, and then topped the New Zealandcharts in February 1982. Released in North America in mid-1982,the song topped the Canadian charts in October. After initiallybeing ignored in the US, the song then charted in America somemonths later, finally hitting the top spot for four weeks in J anuary1983.

In the UK, the song topped the charts in J anuary andFebruary 1983, and is the only Men at Work song to make the UKtop 20. The song also went No. 1 in Ireland, Denmark andSwitzerland, and was a top 10 hit in many other territories. It hasbecome a popular and patriotic song in Australia. Background and writing

Colin Hay told Songfacts "The chorus is really about theselling of Australia in many ways, the over-development of thecountry. It was a song about the loss of spirit in that country. It'sreally about the plundering of the country by greedy people. It isultimately about celebrating the country, but not in a nationalistic

way and not in a flag-waving sense. It's really more than that."Content

The lyrics are about an Australian traveler circling theglobe, proud of his nationality, and about his interactions withpeople he meets on his travels who are interested in his homecountry. One of the verses refers to Vegemite sandwiches, among otherthings; the particular lyric "He just smiled and gave me a Vegemitesandwich" has become a well-known phrase.Slang and drug terms are used in the lyrics:

Travelling in a fried-out Kombi, on a hippie trail, head full ofzombie. Here "fried-out" means overheated, Kombi refers to theVolkswagen Type 2 combination van, and having "a head full ofzombie" refers to the use of a type of marijuana. Cultural slang isalso used after the second verse the refrain is "where the beerdoes flow and men chunder" "chunder" means vomit.Cultural significance

The flute part in the song was based around the tune of"Kookaburra", a well-known Australian children's rhyme.Originally, "Down Under" was released as the B-side to

"Keypunch Operator", a rare custom-pressed single by Men atWork; some of the guitar melodies from that version were furtherdeveloped into flute parts on the later release.

The exterior shots for the music video were filmed at the CronullaSand Dunes outside of Sydney. The video also features severallitre-size cans of what appear to be Foster's Lager (although thebrand is removed), a beer drunk mainly outside Australia whilebeing marketed as Australian.

The song is a perennial favorite on Australian radio andtelevision, and topped the charts in the U.S. and UKsimultaneously in early 1983. It was later used as a theme song by

Essendon midfielder Brent Stanton says thereare reasons for optimism that the AFL club willnot face the same sort of fallout that hasenveloped NRL club Cronulla over an anti-doping investigation.

The Sharks have sacked several officials and anumber of players have reportedly been urged to sit out ofthe game for six months or risk a longer ban as they dealwith an ASADA investigation.

The Bombers are also being investigated by ASADA(the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority), over theirsupplement use last year when they employed sportsscientist Stephen Dank, who was previously withCronulla.

Stanton said he did not know details of the Cronullacase.

But asked whether Essendon, whose decision tovolunteer information to the AFL prompted ASADA toinvestigate them, had reason for "cautious optimism" thattheir case would have a different outcome, Stanton saidthat might be the case.

"Possibly - it's a whole different investigation," the

midfielder told reporters at the club's family day."We opened up our doors to be investigated."We're doing everything possible to try to get that

process under way and we're fully cooperating."I think the AFL and ASADA are doing their job - so

are we."Stanton refused to say whether he had been

interviewed by ASADA officials. But he insisted the coaching staff and players were

not distracted from preparing for the season-openeragainst Adelaide on Friday week.

"Yes, there might be a little bit of outside talk thatother stuff is going on at other clubs," he said.

"But their investigation will take its course - ours willtake its course, but our main focus is round one.

"That's probably a little bit hard tobelieve, but the playing group have come

together and focused on what we can controland that is our football."

Stanton said it was humbling that theBombers were still having members sign up inlarge numbers despite the saga and that therewas a strong turnout at the family day.

"We can't thank them enough for that,"he said.

I think they're looking forward to theseason starting next week as well and we canput this behind us and focus on our footballagain."

Barba takes steps towards NRL returnBen Barba returned toBelmore on Wednesday tovisit his Canterbury team-mates after being dischargedfrom a private treatmentfacility where he has spentthe past two weeks.

Barba was suspendedindefinitely by the Bulldogs lastmonth to deal with issuesaffecting him off the field.

"It was great to be back atBelmore today," Barba said in astatement released by the club.

"The time away from footyhas been helpful but I havemissed it.

"It'll be great to be around myteam mates again, I have missedtheir company over the past fewweeks and can't wait to get backout on to the training field."

Barba's return to training willlead to speculation the superstar

it may not be too far away."People must be aware that

this is the first stage of a muchbigger program for Ben,"Greenberg said.

"The independent expertsand specialists have provided uswith their initial report and a big partof their recommendation is for Ben

to return to the structure of his day-
