Thank You to Our School Partners

This month we would like to highlight some of the wonderful relationships that the residents of Kings

Way Care Centre are making with members of our community. We are so fortunate to have such a

supportive system outside our home, and there really is nothing better than seeing children forming

lasting bonds with our residents!

Harry Miller Middle School and the Kennebecasis Baptist Church Youth group have requested that

they come and help out with our TV Bingo evenings every so often. Extra hands and eyes increase the

number of wonderful folks who can come and try their luck at the winning! When the bingo is over,

many of the residents do not want the young people to leave!

The Valley Christian Academy has decided to team up with Kings Way Care Centre to help bake treats

to put in our back packs each month. These backpacks are part of a new program which partners the

Kings Way Life Care Alliance with a school in the North End of Saint John to provide healthy food over

the weekend for some families that are struggling. Many residents feel this program is a wonderful

way to give back to our community and help those in need.

Thank you to all our school partners that have allowed our residents to join in their classrooms!

Let’s Color the City with Warmth

On Friday, February 12, Kings Way Care Centre received a call from Constable Corey McAllister of the Kennebecasis Regional Police indicating they would like to donate warm clothing, scarves and hats, to any residents that perhaps may not have any. They arrived with boxes full!! Accompanying them were Betty Russell & Jessica LeBlanc, a mother and daughter team, who in recent years have launched “Let’s Color the City with Warmth.” Their mission is to help the homeless and less fortunate in the

Greater Saint John area.

Thank you so much for making a difference at our

home and to other’s in our community!!!

The Eden Alternative - It Can Be Different

The Eden Alternative Philosophy of Care is guided by a set of

Ten Principles. This month we will explore Principle #4.

The Eden Alternative Principle #4

An Elder-centered community creates opportunity to give as well as receive care.

This is the antidote to helplessness.

Principle #4 reminds us that we all want to care for others, even those of us that are living in

long term care. If we had our meals prepared, our laundry done, our housework done, even our

face and hands washed for us and our clothes picked out - we would find ourselves feeling very

helpless. Many of the people that move into our homes are very capable of doing some of these

things for themselves and also wishing to help others. It is our responsibility to ensure they have

those opportunities to care for themselves and for others. When we are engaged in our daily

course of life we are able to overcome helplessness.

Balancing the giving and receiving of care extends out into the larger community. Elders living

in the home must have opportunities to contribute to the community, such as our school back

pack program and Samaritans Purse Shoeboxes, if they chose to. You may see some of the

residents involved in the maintenance of their Human Habitat, by setting tables, making their

bed, folding laundry, caring for the homes pets, etc. Others care for us by giving their loving

hugs and kisses and asking how our day has been.

Creating an environment where companionships matter, care is balanced, and flexibility is

woven into the fabric of the organization, brings forth new ideas.

Care means helping another to grow. When care is balanced for all, expectations

are met, and people flourish.

Turnbull Nursing Home

St. John & St. Stephen

Dear Family Members,

We have recently been informed by government that the level of professional staff in nursing homes is going to

be reduced this coming budget year. Currently we have 60% licensed staff and 40% unlicensed staff providing

direct care in nursing homes across New Brunswick. The new plan effective 2016 will see 30% licensed staff and

70% unlicensed staff working. Although this ratio does not affect the number of people working each day, it will

significantly reduce the amount of time for the administration of medications, dealing with medical concerns and

situations that occur on a daily basis, supervision, palliative care, communication and government required

documentation.

Government had been working on a plan that would reduce the level of professional staff over time once many

other supports were in place. This plan has been abandoned and these reductions are happening without a plan

of action. We realize and appreciate that our province cannot sustain the current way of doing things nor can we

sustain this model with the doubling of our senior population and subsequent services. As an organization over

the past four years we have spent much time advocating for a new model of care-one that provides equivalent or

better quality but is more affordable. These kinds of quick cuts do not solve the bigger problem at hand. The

institutional model of care is not sustainable. It is time to move forward with a new model that provides both

quality and sustainability.

If you have questions or concerns about the future care of your loved one, please stop by my office or call

636-2654. I would be happy to discuss this further.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen....But without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to Him must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who

diligently seek Him. Hebrews 1:1, 6
