Washington High School
20th year
for the
Parent
Newsletter
Mr. Phillips and his students put in a ton of hours to put out several print runs of our
newspaper every year. In addition, Mr. Phillips’ students maintain up-to-the-minute
coverage of Warrior Nation on their website and through their Twitter feed. All of
those late nights help to highlight our school’s successes and issues for the entire
student body. That is why it was so exciting to the work of those students recognized
with several “Best of SNO” awards this past month. The “School Newspapers
Online” (SNO) organization evaluates contribution from 357 student newspapers
nationwide, and they recognized FOUR Washington stories for their excellent
work. Paris McNutt, Jessie Koozer, and Grace McKinstry all received
recognition, and Abby Throndson was recognized for TWO stories to which she
contributed. Awesome work, Kyle Phillips and Surveyor crew! – Adam Witte
Congrats to returning Surveyor staffers!

Applaud-the-Poet Poetry Slam
On February 2, David Duer competed in the most recent installment of the
Applaud-the-Poet Poetry Slam at the Raygun store in New Bo. He took
home the second-place prize money. Washington student Adam Hein
finished a solid third. Congratulations to both gentlemen!!
Congratulations to Alivia Pernicka! She qualified for state 419 2-
game series! She bowled a 161 and a 221 for a 382 series which
placed her 19th of 54 girls. An awesome feat for a first-time
attendee!
The Cedar Rapids Public Library has nominated the Cedar Rapids Community School District work experience students for the United Way’s Visionary Partnership Volunteerism Award. This award honors individuals or groups that have found a creative way to meet the needs of businesses and non-profit organizations. The students from Cedar Rapids Community School District have volunteered
for many years at the library through the school’s Work Experience program.
The work experience program provides students, based on their individual skill
level, an opportunity to increase their work skills while helping the
community. As finalist for this award they need your vote for the win. Please
vote for them at https://www.uweci.org/get-involved/nonprofit/volunteer-
recognition/volunteer-awards/ and look for Cedar Rapids Community Schools.

As you might have heard, our Washington Large Group Speech team just closed a
phenomenal season. We had 14 groups nominated for All-State, which is by far a
record for our school and put us third in the state this year (behind Dubuque Senior
and West Des Moines Valley). Groups nominated for All-State are considered to be
the top 5% in the state, and our students represented Washington at the All-State
festival this past Saturday in Ames. 60 of our students are involved in an all-state-
nominated group, and 19 students are involved in 2 (or 3 in 1 case) nominated
groups. This is a huge accomplishment for these small groups as well as our entire
team, so I wanted to include a list of those students involved below. If you see
them in the hallway or in class, please congratulate them! -Carrie
