Thir eth Sunday in Ordinary Time

BLIND JUSTICE A statue of Blind Jus ce stands atop many courts of law in the United States. She wears a blindfold and holds the scales of jus ce. She represents the ideal expressed in today’s reading from Sirach—that each person will be treated equally in the eyes of the law and that judges will “[judge] justly and [affirm] the right” (Sirach 35:18) based solely on the justness of each plain ff’s case. Yet we know that the wealthy can buy very good lawyers, giving them an edge in the courtroom. We know that blacks far outnumber whites on death row. We also know that high-profile defendants are o en tried and convicted by the media before the judge and jury ever enter the court. However care-ful, no human judge or human jus ce system can be completely blind to factors such as race, wealth, religion, gender, age, or background. THE MERCY OF THE COURT In comparison, today’s scriptures depict God as “the just judge” who offers every person an equal measure of jus ce. Like the Pharisee in today’s Gos-pel, we must be careful not to overes mate our own worthiness or to judge the unworthiness of others. Like the apostle Paul, we must realize that, if we are judged to be righteous in the courts of God, it will be based not on our status as Chris ans, or on our good deeds, or on any other factor by which we might exalt ourselves. Instead, it will be solely because we asked for and relied on God’s mercy. Sirach reminds us that God is swi to hear and re-spond to every person who cries out for mercy, even those whom the world despises as unworthy. “Those who [are] convinced of their own righteous-ness and despise everyone else” (Luke 18:9) would be well advised to humble themselves enough to beg for mercy, or they may get a surprise on judg-ment day! JUSTICIA IMPARCIAL La estatua de la mujer con los ojos vendados y sostenien-do la balanza de la jus cia se yergue sobre muchos tribu-nales civiles de los Estados Unidos. Ella representa el ideal expresado en la lectura de hoy proveniente del Eclesiás co (o Sirácide); a saber, que cada persona será tratada con igualdad ante los ojos de la ley y que los jue-ces “no [tomen] en cuenta la condición de las perso-nas” (Eclesiás co 35: 15) si no que se basen únicamente en los justos méritos del caso del demandante. No obstante, sabemos que los ricos pueden costearse muy buenos abogados, lo cual les proporciona una ven-taja ante el tribunal. Sabemos que hay más negros que blancos entre los sentenciados a muerte. También sabe-mos que los demandados de mayor fama a menudo son juzgados y condenados por los medios públicos de co-municación aun antes de que el juez o el jurado haya ingresado a la sala de juicios. No importa cuántas pre-cauciones se tomen, ningún juez ni ninguna jus cia hu-mana pueden ser completamente imparciales ante fac-tores tales como la raza, el poder económico, la religión, el sexo, la edad o los antecedentes de las partes. Sirácide nos recuerda que Dios es pronto en escucharnos y responder a toda persona que clama por misericordia, aun a aquéllas a las que el mundo desprecia y ene por indignas. ¡Más les vale a aquellos “que presumen de ser justos y desprecian a los demás” (véase Lucas 18:9), hu-millarse lo suficiente y pedir misericordia, no sea que se sorprendan en el día del juicio! SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2016 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Try a little tenderness

Pope Francis reminds us that Catholics are a mission people. During this Year of Mercy, the mission of the church takes on a special meaning, he says. “All of us are invited to ‘go out’ as missionary disciples, each gener-ously offering their talents, creativity, wisdom, and experience in order to bring the message of God’s tenderness and compassion to the entire human family.” Tenderness seems to be in short supply these days, espe-cially in the midst of an often harsh election season. Where can you bring a little mercy to bear on the public conversation?

How do you keep up on events in your church or faith community? Chanc-es are, you have at some point seen a website or read a paper published by a member of the Catholic Press Association. The association has been around for more than a hundred years and has more than 600 members. The Catholic press is a great resource for Catholics to learn about their faith and traditions. And the organization looks to Saint Anthony Mary Claret, a prolific author and publisher, for inspiration as its patron saint. Be a patron of the Catholic press in your diocese, so that it can continue to inform and inspire future generations.

Sometimes when you reach the end of a story, you feel exhilarated by the experience of it. And sometimes it’s so good, you read it again. In Juda-ism, Simchat Torah, the holiday celebrated today, means “Rejoicing in the Torah” and marks the completion of the annual cycle of weekly Torah readings that starts with the beginning of Genesis and concludes with the end of Deuteronomy. This festive day is so joyous that there is sometimes even dancing in the street! The cycle of readings is immediately and end-lessly repeated. Pick up the Good Book today and every day.

During this year, the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy which ends on November 20, Catholics have the opportuni-ty to pass through special holy doors of mercy, designated at cathedrals and major churches all over the world, and receive an indulgence for the remission of sin. By symboli-cally

opening a door and walking through it, you show that you seek God’s boundless compassion and forgiveness and that you will find it in Christ. Enter the holy doors at a church near you before the Year of Mercy is out—and invite others to come along.

When it comes to your health, you can always turn to the saints for help. In fact, there are many saints who are known to intercede on behalf of the sick for particular ailments and conditions. About to have surgery? Ask Saint Luke the Evangelist. Suffering from arthritis? Invoke Saint Alphonsus Ligouri. Have a headache? Entreat Saint Teresa of Avila. Catholics also have a sacrament for healing: Anointing of the Sick. No matter the physi-cal outcome, remember that the primary purpose of your prayers is for spiritual healing, comfort, and courage.

We don’t know a lot about the life of Saint Jude, one of the apostles, but people often turn to him for intercession in “hopeless causes.” A friend in need is a friend indeed, so be that kind of friend for those in need in your own life. When they ask for help, find a way to respond. You can’t do everything for them, but as Jesuit Daniel Berrigan once said, “No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.” Take Saint Jude as your inspiration and find a way to bring hope to the hopeless.

The death of boxer and social agitator Muhammad Ali this year touched admirers worldwide. The achievements of men and women like Ali are greater than the sum of their defeats. While the self-proclaimed “Greatest” was a phenomenon at his sport, Ali did more to raise the con-sciousness of Americans to the racism that permeated his generation. Prejudice will remain our nation’s scourge until all lives matter. Lift your eyes and offer your heart to the Rosary’s Glorious Mysteries, in which new ways are possible, and the humblest wears the crown.
