• Working on our Quality Management Systemwhich meets ISO 9001:2008
• Providing our customers with the rightproducts at the right time from our specialistsuppliers.
The Managing Director is ultimately responsiblefor the implementation of this policy with theassistance of our Quality Manager who controlsthe reviews, audits and works to ensure theunfailing maintenance of our quality standards.
Our policy is to provide an unrivalled serviceby getting it right first time and every timethereafter.
Environmental FactorsAlpro Hardware endeavors where ever possibleto use environmentally friendly materials in theconstruction of its products and customerservices. In line with its environmental policyAlpro handles are manufactured from bothaluminium and stainless steel, both of which are100% recyclable.
As the third most abundant element in theworld (Bauxite) aluminium is both sustainableand recyclable. This means that as well asaesthetic advantages, savings can be madethrough superior performance (longevity anddurability) of the material by reducingmaintenance costs. Added to this is the non-toxicity of the material making for a saferworking environment.
A recent report by EUROFER (January 1999)“Manufacturer Processing and Use ofStainless Steel: A Review of Health Effects”concluded that:
Stainless steel does not cause adverse effectson health and so does not need to beclassified as hazardous to health.
There is no data available to suggestmanufacture of stainless steel affects the healthof the workers.
The grinding and cutting of stainless steel donot appear to carry any adverse health effects
In addition stainless steel allows theminimization of waste, with
all discarded parts, collected, recycledand returned to thefurnace for re-use.
In addition to theabove economic and
environmental benefits,Alpro handles also conform to all relevantlegislation regarding the Disability andDiscrimination Act 2004.
If the finish yourequire is not shownplease contact us
Finishes• Satin Anodised (SAA)• Satin Stainless Steel (SSS)• Polished Stainless Steel (PSS)• Powder Coated (PC)• Nylon Coated (NC)Handles are available in both Rilsan nylon and powdercoating.
However since the costs of both nylon and powdercoating are virtually identical we strongly recommend theuse of Rilsan nylon. The nylon coat gives a superiordurability and conforms to the Disability andDiscrimination Act 2004 (Part 3 Provision of Ser vices) withregard to the improvement of thermal conductivity. Rilsannylon is applied to the base material of the handle(70/100 microns thick) and is available in five ex-stockcolours, as show in the colour chart below.
Additional colours are available with a 10 working dayturn-around and some colours also carry an addi tionalprice surcharge.
Additional finishes are available. If thefinish required is not shown, pleasecontact our sales office on01202 676262 for further help.

pull handlesBespoke Handles
As an independent door hardware manufacturer, AlproArchitectural Hardware is able to offer customers tailor madesolutions to accommodate all of their design requirements.Illustrated below is just a sample of the various design solutionsprovided by Alpro in response to various criteria specified bythe clients involved.
These solutions include St Margaret Mary’s church atSouthampton, where Alpro provided polished stainless steelhandles fitted to large glass entrance doors to complete animposing aesthetic design for the building.
When an international bathroom organization needed abespoke handle for their new range of shower enclosures, theyturned to Alpro to design and manufacture a slim andaesthetically looking stainless steel handle. Delivered inscheduled consignments, Alpro manufactured, packed andbar coded the product in accordance with client requirementsto ensure a successful launch and continuity of manufacture.
Stannah Lifts needed stainless steel handles to a particularhandle size and again Alpro were able to supply the requiredhandle to their specification, for use on the Stannah platformlifts for the disabled. Stannah Managing Director AlistairStannah commented “The quality and service we receivedfrom Alpro, coupled with a competitive price, made thedecision to use Alpro a simple one. As a company we are verysatisfied with every aspect of the association with Alpro.”
As part of a refurbishment at Greville Secondary School, Alprowas tasked with manufacturing "Selecta" modular designedhandles for the new entrance doors. Manufactured in polishedstainless steel the handles were 600mm centres and 32mm indiameter. The modular design allowed Alpro to take individualcomponents and construct a particular design for the client. The modular design of the handles further allowed delivery andinstallation time to be kept to an absolute minimum, therebyallowing the client peace of mind with regard to completiondates. Another example of Alpro working in tandem withcustomers to fulfil demanding contractual requirements on site.
Alpro manufacturing facility is further reinforced by the internalsales and support structure to ensure a comprehensive servicefrom initial order enquiry through to final delivery and invoicing.Once again offering the customer First Choice solutions.

Disabilites Discrimination Act 2004 www.alpro.co.uk 01202 676262
pull handlesDisabilities Discrimination Act 2004
QWhat are the new regulationsdesigned to achieve?
A In a word, Equality. The newlegislation is about the civil rights ofdisabled people receiving the sameservices and provisions that areavailable for the non disabled. It isabout removing barriers, in areassuch as attitude, environment andorganisation.
QHow will this affect ingress andegress to and from buildings?
A Disabled people need to be able toget inside buildings, move aroundfreely once inside and exit in a safeway. This may mean wider doorways, signage that can be seen from aseated or standing position, colourcontrasts for door furniture, autodoor operators, audio information, adequate way finding and levelaccess or lift access.
QHow will this affect door design?A The requirements for the design ofdoors will vary according to locationand context. These requirements arecomprehensively covered by BS8300and Document M. Contained withinthese publications are door closerstrengths and colour contrastinformation with regard to doorfurniture. Although it should be notedthat both of these areas are thesubject of ongoing debate, with theOffice of the Deputy Prime Minister.Once these areas have beenagreed and resolved it may be thatBS8300 is rewritten, incorporatingnew or additional requirements.
QDo I have to comply with the newlegislation?
A Yes, but the major issue here is whatis seen as “Reasonable Adjustment”on the part of the service provider. The context of the building has to betaken into account and whetherthere are other ways of achievingcompliance. For example is there anadditional entrance into thebuilding, other than the primary frontentrance? Perhaps access to thebuilding can be achieved through aside entrance that is already wideenough to accept wheelchairs.Advice needs to sought from theBuilding Control officer. SinceDecember 1996 it has been unlawfulto treat disabled people lessfavourably because of theirdisability. Since October 2004service providers have a duty tomake “Reasonable Adjustments”.
QWhat are the requirements for doorfurniture?
A The regulations at present state thatthere should be a colour contrastbetween the door finish and thedoor furniture, and that the doorfurniture is not cold to the touch.Recent research has shown that amatt finish is better suited for thevisually impaired. Currentlydiscussions are ongoing with theOffice of the Deputy Prime Minister toclarify the exact requirements.Additional information can beobtained from Alpro.
QHow will the legislation beenforced?
A Enforcement of Part 3 of the DDAlegislation will be by individualstaking service providers to court tosue if they feel they have beentreated unfairly. The court will thenlook at the “ReasonableAdjustments” made. Discriminationwill be deemed to have taken placeif the service provider cannot showthat the treatment in question isjustified. The court will judge on“What is reasonable in all thecircumstances of the case”. Part Mrequires “Reasonable Provision” tomake buildings accessible, compliance with Part M can be usedto establish “Reasonable Adjustment”under the DDA legislation.

DDA Part 3 Provision of Services December 1996 - October 2004The building regulations control how you carry out construction and modifications to your property.
The legislation that governs the accessibility of buildings, with regards to disabled people has been significantly revised. TheDisability and Discrimination Act Part 3, Provision of Services, became law on the 1st October 2004. From this moment intime the requirements for service providers to make “Reasonable adjustments” to their buildings to ensure disabled peoplecan access services has changed. You need therefore to be aware of how this legislation will affect you.
The LegislationThe Discrimination Act 1995, as amended by the Special Education Needs and Disability Act 2001 (SENDA). BuildingRegulations Part M revised to meet new standards (May 2004). These standards are comprehensively summarised in BS8300(2001), Design of Buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people.

Factors Affecting MaintenanceSurface contamination and the formation of depositsmust be prevented. These deposits may be minuteparticles of iron or rust from other sources used on thebuilding of new premises and not removed until afterthe stainless steel items have been fixed. Industrial andeven naturally occurring atmospheric conditions canproduce deposits, which can be equally corrosive,e.g. salt deposits from marine conditions.Working environments can also provide aggressiveconditions such as heat and humidity, in swimmingpool buildings. These conditions can result in surfacediscoloration of stainless steels and so maintenanceon a more frequent basis may be required.Modern processes use many cleaners, sterilizers andbleaches for hygienic purposes. Proprietary solutions, when used in accordance with makers’ instructions, should be safe but if used incorrectly (e.g. warm orconcentrated), may cause discolouration or corrosionon stainless steels. Strong acid solutions are sometimesused to clean masonry and tiling of buildings. Theseacids should never be used where contact withmetals, including stainless steel is possible, but if thishappens, the acid solution must be removedimmediately, followed by dilution and rinsing withclean water.
Maintenance ProgrammeWith care taken during fabrication and installation, cleaning before “hand-over” should not present anyproblems. More attention may be required if theinstallation period has been prolonged or hand-overdelayed. Where surface contamination is suspected, immediate cleaning after site fixing should avoidproblems later. Food handling, pharmaceutical, aerospace and certain nuclear applications requiredextremely high levels of cleanliness applicable toeach industry. The frequency of cleaning is dependent on theapplication; a simple rule is; “Clean the metal when itis dirty in order to restore its original appearance”. Thismay vary from once to four times a year for externalapplications, but may be daily for items in “hygienic”applications. Recommendations on cleaningfrequencies in architectural applications are shown inTable 2.
Cleaning MethodsStainless steel is easy to clean. Washing with soap ormild detergent and warm water followed by a clearwater rinse is usually quite adequate for domestic andarchitectural equipment.Where stainless steel has become extremely dirty withsigns of surface discolouration (perhaps followingperiods of neglect, or misuse) alternative methods ofcleaning can be used, as outlined in the Table 1.

Care & Maintenance of Alpro Coatedand Anodised HandlesFor the maintenance of coated handles, a mildsolution of warm water and appropriate detergent issuggested. All surfaces of the handle should becleaned, using a soft cloth or brush and driedthoroughly. Again a frequency of every three to sixmonths is suggested.
Satin anodised door furniture, should be wiped overwith a damp cloth and thoroughly dried, a wipe overwith wax polish is then suggested to ensure ongoingaesthetics. Never use metal cleaning agents onaluminium anodised furniture.
Care & Maintenance of Alpro Stainless Steel Handles
IntroductionStainless steels are selected in applications where their inherent corrosion resistance, strength and aestheticappeal are required. However, dependent on the service conditions, stainless steels will stain and discolour dueto surface deposits and so cannot be assumed to be completely maintenance free. In order to achievemaximum corrosion resistance and aesthetic appeal, the surface of the stainless steel must be kept clean.Provided the grade of stainless steel and the surface finish are correctly selected, and cleaning schedulescarried out on a regular basis, good performance and long service life will result.

Suggested MethodSoap, detergent or dilute (1%) ammoniasolution in warm clean water. Apply witha clean sponge, soft cloth or soft-fibrebrush then rinse in clean water and dry.
Detergent and warm water, alternatively, hydrocarbon solvent.
Hydrocarbon solvents (methylated spirit, isopropyl alcohol or acetone).
Mild, non-scratching creams andpolishes. Apply with soft cloth or softsponge and rinse off residues with cleanwater and dry.
Pre-soak in hot water with detergent orammonia solution. Remove deposits withnylon brush and fine scouring powder ifnecessary. Repeat if necessary andfinish with ”routine cleaning”.
Tannin stains - soak a hot solution ofwashing soda i.e. sodium carbonateCoffee deposits - soak in a hot solutionof baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).
10-15 volume % solution of phosphoricacid. Use warm neutralise with diluteammonia solution, rinse with clean waterand dry. Alternatively soak in a 25%vinegar solution and use a nylon brushto remove deposits.
a) Non-scratching cream or polish e.g.Solvol Auto Chrome Metal Polish.
b) Nylon-type pad, e.g.’Scotchbrite’.
A fine, abrasive paste as used for carbody refinishing, e.g. ‘T-Cut’ rinsed cleanto remove all paste material & dried.
Proprietary alkaline or solvent paintstrippers, depending upon paint type.Use soft nylon or bristle brush onpatterned surfaces.
CommentsSatisfactory on most surfaces.
Proprietary spray-applied polishes availableto clean and minimise remarking.
Alkaline formulations are also available withsurfactant additionse.g.”D7” Polish.
Avoid cleaning pastes with abrasive additions.Suitable cream cleansers are available withsoft calcium carbonate additions, e.g. “Cif”,or with the addition of citric acid, e.g. “ShinySinks”. Do not use chloride solutions.
Abrasive scouring powder can leave scratchmarks on polished surfaces.
These solutions can also applied with a softcloth or sponge. Rinse with clean water.Satisfactory on most surfaces.
Proprietary formulations available withsurfactant additions Take special care whenusing hydrochloric acid based mortarremovers.
Creams are suitable for most finishes, but onlyuse “Solvol” on bright polished surfaces. Someslight scratching can be left. Use on brushedand polished finishes along the grain.
May brighten dull finishes. To avoid a patchy appearance, the wholesurface may need to be treated.
Apply as directed by manufacturer.
