Improving lives to helpindividuals and families succeed

It can sometimes prove challenging to make the case that people in Ozaukee County suffer and experience hardships just like people in other parts of the state. Ozaukee County is one of the wealthiest counties in Wisconsin with the highest median household income. Despite that statistic, we all know someone or perhaps we ourselves have experienced anxiety, stress or depression. These issues know no bounds and can affect anyone, regardless of socioeconomic background. At OFS, we are seeing more and more struggling families including parents who are experiencing significant job stress, financial issues or relationship issues. We are seeing an increased number of children with severe anxiety and depression who are isolating and missing school or who are acting out at school and at home. Recent studies show a disproportionate number of emotional, behavioral and mental health problems are occurring in children of the upper and upper middle classes, and personal, emotional, behavioral and mental health issues in childhood and adolescence are associated with an elevated risk for recurrent problems later in life.

In response, OFS is expanding its programs addressing mental health issues in children, teens and parents. We are providing groups in several local schools focusing on stress management, healthy coping skills and reducing relational aggression. We have expanded our counseling programs into several schools to reach youth who experience barriers to reaching services outside of school. Between September and December of 2017, we saw 226 kids in three school districts. This year, our Parents as Teachers staff completed training in postpartum depression so that they can identify and address issues and ensure that these mothers get the help they need. We continue to offer in-office counseling for children, teens, adults and seniors on a sliding scale for those who are uninsured or underinsured.

2017 PROGRAM STATISTICSOFS PROVIDED SERVICES TO 6,309 INDIVIDUALS IN 2017

Counseling 92 individuals received 744 sessions of affordable counseling for a total of 1,036 hours.

Guys & Girls Groups 93 boys attended a ten-week session called “Guys Group”. 42 girls attended a six-week session called “Girls Group” and 92 girls attended an eight-week session called “Respect & Resiliency”.

Family Steps 108 kids and 75 parents in 55 families received services from a Family Steps Coordinator.

Internet Safety 3,280 individuals participated in 91 presentations on Internet Safety and Cyberbullying Prevention.

Co-Parenting Program The Co-Parenting program provided Beyond Divorce Classes to 144 divorcing parents with minor children.

Parenting Programs 416 individuals participated in at least one parenting program including: Play Groups, Spirited Child, Incredible Years or other workshops.

Coordinated Service Team (CST) 69 kids and 56 parents in 36 families received services from a Family Team Coordinator.

Parents as Teachers 147 children & 113 parents in 97 families have received 620 home visits from a Parent Educator.

Senior Services 62 Senior citizens received 1,161 instances of help including: 46 chores, 607 rides, 499 phone visits and 9 visits.

Volunteers 181 people are actively volunteering for OFS.

Rainbows 36 children between the ages of 4 and 17 participated in our 12 week Rainbows program. 14 parents participated in the parent support group.

Community Giving For some OFS program participants, the holidays are a particularly difficult time. Through the kindness of donors, we were able to provide 63 children and 45 adults with gifts of food, clothing, toys or gift cards this holiday season. 36 children in the Rainbow program chose gifts for their parents and care givers. The gratitude we received from these individuals was overwhelming.

Prevention Programs 47 Prevention Education Programs on Stranger Awareness, Child Abuse Prevention and Eating Disorders were provided to 1,470 students throughout Ozaukee County.
