The History of Salsa Music Salsa Music was developed in Cuba in the 1940’s-1950’s

The music has elements of:

French/Haitian instruments and sound

African drum beats as were brought to the Carribbean by African Slaves

Spanish Guitar as brought to Cuba by the Spanish during the Spanish Golden Age of the 15th and 16th centuries.

Salsa, Merengue, Mambo, Cha Cha, and other types of Carribbean music and dance came to the United States during the 1940’s and 1950’s by U.S. Soldiers who were serving in the Carribbean.

The Salsa music and dance of the 1950’s was greatly influenced by the famous Cuba vocalist Celia Cruz and purcussionist Tito Puente. In the last fifty years the Salsa has evolved and become the music and dance that exists today.
