Dear Friends,

Th e “great winter that wasn’t” is over! While concerns about the unforeseen eff ects of such a mild winter linger, it is hard not to celebrate the return of Spring, which is as awe-inspiring as it is dependable.

Spring is, arguably, Ladew’s specialty. Th e gardens are beautiful and inviting. Th e washed-out shades of winter having been replaced, sometimes overnight, by the intense green of fresh grass and the luminous veils of budding trees. Beds which weeks ago held nothing but bare shrubs and mulch, are suddenly thick with bulbs and eager perennials. It is wonderful when experienced garden to garden, and spectacular taken as a whole. Th e Nature Walk, not to be outdone by its fancy neighbor, off ers a slightly diff erent version of Spring, uncultivated and lightly touched—the perfect foil for the gardens.

Th e house is renewed as well. Primped and fresh for the season, it tells the story of the life and times of Harvey Ladew and, by design, showcases the gardens with views ranging from lovely to spectacular.

On most days it is enough to visit a beautiful place that has managed to escape the hectic pace of day to day life, a place that is both world-renowned and remarkably intimate, a place that can calm our frayed nerves and renew us. Th en there are the other days…

For those other days, we have put together a full season of mission-based programs and events to inform, entertain and inspire you. From the My Lady’s Manor Steeplechase Races in April, to the acclaimed Garden Festival, which will welcome Honorary Chair Carolyne Roehm and over 40 vendors to Ladew on May 5th, to the Groovin’ in the Grass Summer Concert Series getting underway in mid-June. Don’t miss the Garden Festival, Saturday, May 5th to shop from over 40 vendors and join Carolyne Roehm, as she shares her “Passion for Style”.

including Storytime, elementary school field trips and summer camps, to programs for adults including the In the Gardens classes, the Tour of Gardens and two Inside Private Gardens trips…there is an event or program for any taste—and all help support Ladew.

While revenue generated through events and programs, admissions to the garden and membership all help us maintain the Gardens, House and Nature Walk, we remain dependent on the generous support of donors to care for Ladew. Thank you to all of you who support Ladew with gifts to the annual fund and membership in the Patron Circles and please know that we value your commit-ment to Ladew and put your contributions to very good use.

I would be remiss if I did not point out a special category of Annual Fund donors—the Ladew staff. A remarkable 100% of full time staff and a large number of seasonal staff members have made gifts to the annual appeal this year. Thanks to them for their dedication to Ladew as employees and donors!

Enjoy this issue of the Ladew Letter. Thank you for your commitment to Ladew and the role that you play in this unique and treasured place.

Grandpa is Losing

Oh My!

His Filter!

LADEW TOPIARY GARDENS 7

Decaying material and waste break down into nutrients suspended in the water. Algae loves all of those nutrients. The more nutrients, the more algae. The trick here is to remove the materials, waste and/or the nutrients the materials produce.

There are many kinds of mechanical pond filters and filter systems on the market, all designed to help with this. Here at Ladew, our clearest ponds are the ones with good water circulation pumped over and through a large quantity of marginal, floating and submerged plant material. The ponds that have stream beds provide the best opportunity to do this. And don’t forget—simple regular maintenance, annual cleanout and wise use of plants are a must for water quality in all water features.

If you are planning a pond or trying to figure out the one you already have, filtering is one of the most important considerations. If you do it right, you won’t find yourself referring to your pond as “that inappropriate So and So in the yard”.

By Chris Hacker—Aquatic Gardener

Not long ago my wife and I were having dinner with an elderly couple that lives down the street from us. Old Mr. So and So kept making comments that were quite inappropriate. His wife apologized before we left, explaining that he didn’t always used to be that way. Fortunately, I am an aquatic gardener, so I knew exactly what was going on. Mr. So and So’s filter is wearing out. This leads us to this spring’s pond topic—FILTERING.

Filtering is the best way to keep inappropriate things from spoiling our beautiful water gardens. In nature, this is done by the circulation of water over and through the best filter of all...plants. Plants thrive on “inappropriate things”. Things like decaying plant material and wildlife waste which accumulate inside the pond.

The cross look on my wife’s face was a good indicator at my neighbors house, but in the pond, cloudy water and excess algae are the best indications that filtering is needed.

8 Ladew Letter • SPRING 2012

BY TURNEY MCKNIGHT

Lena came into my life sometime during the winter of 1984, a potentially (I thought) intimidating personage with a throaty voice and a commanding manner. At the suggestion of dear Mrs. Gris, and with the offi cial concurrence of various committees and boards of directors, the old Manor Race Committee had been offi cially dissolved and the Manor Races and Ladew Gardens were now melded together. That meant me and Ladew Director Lena Caron were supposed to work together. The thing could have gone either way...thought I.

Not a chance of it! Lena was arguably already overworked, but she threw herself into helping me with the races in every manner I (or more importantly she) could think of. She assigned staff to help me. (Vivian Weatherly represented half of Ladew administrative staff then). She hired my mother in-law Judy Compton to help me. Most importantly her door was open to me any time for general noodling about the races.

Well, not just her door. I would often find her out in the gardens elbow deep in the soil, planting or transplanting something. And usually, when she fi nished the particular task she was doing, she would want to walk me around showing off some particular part of her Gardens with pride, inundating me with Latin names and dazzling me with her horticultural knowledge. And what’s more, I found myself enjoying it!

After a while it was apparent to me that Lena and I were quite fond of each other. Maybe she liked me because I recognized in the twinkle of those big brown eyes her constant savoring of life’s ironies. Sometimes we would sit there talking seriously on the surface, with a whole undertow of unspoken secondary funniness, till I would give in and crack up. Lena might smile, but that was all.

She was an astute observer of certain of human frailties, particularly social climbing. We had some fun at the expense of a few of the local would-be gentry, I can tell you. But perhaps I shouldn’t. It was all harmless. Lena had the biggest heart in the world and would have herself walked into quicksand, as they say, to save any of them.

Those were different times, and better times, we older folks always like to think. We wandered all over Harvey’s house with drinks in our hand at the Trustees Christmas Dinner (not me and Lena, me and the other guests). We married off our children and spread our parents’ ashes there in the Gardens. In many ways Ladew Gardens was the private sanctuary of Harvey Ladew’s friends and their children and friends. And Lena was, for that time, the consummate mistress of Pleasant Valley House and Gardens.

“Hello, Dahrlin!” I can hear her now...

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:DR. LORI SPORTELLI, O.D.Baltimore City resident

New Ladew Member—Summer 2011Out of the city, and into the country...

WHAT FIRST BROUGHT YOU TO L ADEW GARDENS?

The Summer Concert Series first brought me to Ladew Gardens. I believe it was a Smooth Kentucky concert, actually—(I love them!). I remember walking with friends toward the Great Bowl for the first time, not knowing what I was about to uncover once I got there.

I’ve lived in Baltimore City for over a decade, and I never knew there was such an amazing spot so close to me. I remember standing on the top terrace looking out on the Bowl with my jaw dropped in complete awe that day. The vista from that vantage point naturally lifts yours eyes upward, and your spirits, too. To have concerts in such a spectacular venue is such a treat, it’s just incomparable to any other place I’ve been to see live music.

I love walking through the gardens during a concert, taking in all the beauty, with the

sounds of music floating on the air. I can’t imagine anything but a feeling of serenity, fun and relaxation happening within the confines of such an ethereal place. It’s perfection, in my humble opinion, and the quality of the music seems to get better and better, year to year.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A MEMBER OF L ADEW ?

When I fall in love with a place, a person or an idea, I always do the best I can to support it. It’s easy to fall in love with Ladew Gardens— whether for the House and Gardens alone, the people that work there, or the exciting events they hold. Membership is a good start, but I also intend to try and give more this year and hope to always be involved with Ladew in the future. I am considering volunteering at the concerts this summer, if my help is needed.

WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK TO VISIT L ADEW ?

I’m surprised anyone who’d ever stepped foot in the gardens would wonder what keeps me coming back time and again. Ladew is fantastically

gorgeous, almost overwhelmingly so. Visiting allows me to put my bare feet in the grass and breathe in the smells of nature in a way you just can’t accomplish living in the city. I love city life, but I definitely need to get out to the country and back to my earth “roots” with some frequency. Enjoying the concerts with friends and family is the perfect motivation to get me in the car and on my way. When I do, I know I am heading towards a place of positive energy, peace and good times.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPOT IN THE GARDENS, AND WHY ?

I don’t really think about Ladew in terms of a specific spot, but more of a larger experience. If you come to concerts and walk around week to week, you’ll know what I mean. There is constantly something new and beautiful to behold. Bring on the summer concerts 2012! I cannot wait!
