Ladies attending the event grabbed a snack as they jumped on the PARTY BUS that was headed to the Power and Light District in downtown Kansas City. Each trimester, the Office of Admissions and Student Services hosts the event for current female and prospective students, faculty, staff, alumni and other guests.

Dr. Jessica Taylor graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College, Kansas City in 2008, and after a preceptorship, she opened her office at 1520 Walnut, Kansas City, MO 64108. It took the group about 30 minutes to travel from campus to the Power and Light District.

“I did a lot of research on where to open my practice. I charted on maps where chiropractors were located with my husband and noticed there was a big gap in the downtown area. It’s also near my home. There were over 300,000 people working downtown and no one was here to meet their needs,” stated Dr. Taylor. “I love the space and location. I have over 2,000 square feet. That gives me room to grow.”

Dr. Taylor mentioned that her CA (Chiropractic Assistant) is just as important in making the office run smoothly as she is. She recommends hiring someone with experience to keep your training to a minimum.

“You can be the best chiropractor in the world, but if you can’t run a business it’s not going to work,” Dr. Taylor told the ladies. She encouraged them to attend every seminar they could while they were students on managing your practice.

The open concept of her office space helps Dr. Taylor with the patient flow. She currently sees approximately 75 patients a week. The majority of her patients are 25-55 in age and are working professionals.

“I advertise a lot. When I first opened I did over 15,000 postcards, bought a list and started handing them out in my community.” Dr. Taylor stated that even with paying herself a salary within 10 months of opening her practice, she was making profits. She also spent money on building out her office, as when she moved in there were no walls.

Dr. Taylor participates in “First Friday’s” where she displays art from local artists and on the first Friday of each month, visitors come tour the artwork in her office. It’s a great way to decorate her office and be involved in the community.

A massage therapist and nutritionist also work for Dr. Taylor as contracted employees that each refer to one another. Her goal is the patient’s health and her treatment plans explain the how, what and why to all of them.

“You’re hand in the community is very important. People notice if you are giving back.” She often hosts Ladies Night Out events, provides patient education seminars and is doing some corporate lunch and learn presentations. Dr. Taylor also is involved with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, an organization she assisted as a CCCKC student.

The students learned so much during the office visit. One student in her early trimesters commented that she was exposed to things she had not even thought about asking or contemplating when looking for an office space such as parking or shared hallways with other businesses. Thank you Dr. Taylor for spending time with us!
