Our club has completed a second week of successful sailing lessons. Thanks to the Junior

program and the Berrys. Another thirty people were introduced to the fun and

excitement of sailing. On Friday, several kids were taking their parents out for a ride on a

Sunfish! All returned safe and proud of their new skills. As usual, the lessons have

brought new members to our club.

Keep in mind, your family and friends are welcome at our club. Invite them to join you

for sailing and other events. Members and guests telling others about the fun times is our

best advertisement.

The upstairs deck floor for the clubhouse has been replaced. One of our members, Mark

LeBeau, bid on the work and did an excellent job installing a new composite floor for the

deck area. For Lagniappe, he also fixed the sliding door to the upstairs and added a

support to the stairs.

The ice machine is now installed! It is available for all club members. The scooper is the

proper and sanitary way to get ice out of the machine. So far, it has more than kept up

with demand. Please be considerate in how much ice you use.

A work party is planned, Saturday, July 26th to address some things needed for both the

clubhouse and grounds. As the work scope is developed, details will be sent by email. I

encourage all members to donate their time to our club.

Sailing Lessons—July 7—11

Hurricane Season is here, Are you ready? Members, the board approved this policy for hurricane season, READ and BE READY to take action

once a hurricane enters the GULF and has any projected path to SW LA. NOTE that LCYC will tend

your boat if you do not and will CHARGE YOU for the tending if needed.

PROPOSED HURRICANE EVACUATION PLAN;

ONCE a Hurricane enters the GULF and poses any threat to SW LA, all members must prepare their boats to

either withstand the hurricane or be removed from the LCYC property.

Owner must maintain his vessel in a state of readiness for movement in case of hurricane or other emergen-

cy evacuation.

Owner will notify LCYC if propulsion machinery is inoperative and will remain so for more than 48 hours,

and will advise of action being taken to restore machinery to operable condition. In an emergency, LCYC

reserves the right, but not the responsibility, to take action necessary and prudent to safeguard Owner's

vessel and adjacent vessel and property of LCYC.

Owners agree to pay LCYC all charges for damages to LCYC property and services rendered on behalf of

Owner and Owner's vessel in an emergency situation, to include charges for LCYC and materials and/or

the costs of hiring a contractor to move or remove the vessel and to make any repairs required to make the

vessel safe and free from defects which may endanger life, property or natural environment.

Finish the Race—by Al Reese There might be a good reason to retire from a sailboat race and not finish it. There are definitely good reasons to finish the race. One is powerful: a boat finishing the race scores better than a boat which did not finish (DNF). The rule scoring DNF is in Racing Rules of Sailing for 2013-2016 Appendix A Scoring, part of which follows: A4.2 A boat that did not start, did not finish, retired or was disqualified shall be scored points for the finishing place

one more than the number of boats entered in the series.

Thus RRS A4.2 provides two penalties for DNF. The first is a score equal to one more than the number of boats racing. The second penalty identifies the racing not with that race but with its series of races! Usually the number of boats in a series of races is greater than the number of boats in a particular race. Consider the following example: 8 boats race in the series but only 5 in a particular race. The score for a boat not finishing that race is 9. The boat finishing last of 5 has a score of 5, which is 4 points better than 9. That much better race score can put a boat into 1st place for the series. Most sailboat races are in a series; very few sailboat races stand alone. All of LCYC’s races are in series such as a Wednesday series or an LCYC regatta. Beach Restoration—Help Needed… July 26th

Your help is needed and appreciated on July 26th. Rental equipment will be delivered to

the club for all day use. The sand from the North side will be moved to the south beach

area. This is needed for beach restoration. We will be moving boats and dirt work &

some dock work is scheduled. Please bring shovels, rakes, and hammers. Pizza will be

provided for lunch.

Ken Abrams has 3 motors for sale, 7 hp Sears (Eska), 2 hp Honda and 3.5 hp Mercury. All were used on sailboats. All have

tanks as part of the motor.

7 hp Sears: This is an older Sears motor. It is air cooled and is standard shaft length. It has a neutral clutch. (F and N) It is

rough looking but runs fine. Two cycle. $300. The vent screw is messed up and doesn’t seal very well.

2 hp Honda: This is an air cooled, 4 cycle, long shaft, and twist grip throttle motor with idle clutch. Rotate for reverse. This is

a sweet little motor but I have a love/hate relationship with it. The fuel ports must be very tiny and clog up occasionally and

must be sent to the shop for carburetor cleaning. Right now the motor runs but the choke must be on for the motor to run

properly. Someone familiar with carb cleaning can probably take care of it. $500.

3 ½ hp Mercury: I bought this motor to use on my Mariner 19 to replace the Honda. I then sold the Mariner but the buyer did-

n’t need a motor. This motor is long shaft, 4 cycle, twist grip throttle, F/N, rotate for reverse motor. It is practically unused.

The board is reviewing options on painting the club house and restrooms.

Their will be a back to school social in August. More information to come once a date is

decided on.

Board Meetings are normally at the Club House on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 5:30pm

Lock the gate when you leave.

Please clean the clubhouse after use

Please do not leave the air conditioners running.

If you took it out (boats, gear, sails, silverware, whatever), put it back.

Pick up your trash and dispose of it in the garbage cans or the dumpster. For extra credit, you can

pick up someone else’s trash they left out

If something on a club boat breaks, report it to a member of the Board or Ship to Shore so that

repairs can be made
