A night on the sea in an open boat is a long night. As darkness settled, finally, the shine of the light, lifting from the sea in the south, changed to full gold. On the northern horizon a new light appeared, a
small bluish gleam on the edge of the waters. These two lights were the furniture of the world. Otherwise there was nothing but waves.

Performance Notes
• The score is in C. • Accidentals carry through the measure. • For ease of rehearsal and production, the score has been divided up into 8 separate numbers. However, the scene is
really one continuous musical piece. Very little (if any) time should be taken between numbers. • The blend of ensemble, singers, and electronics should always favor the singers. Clarity of the text is of primary importance
here. • The electronics part (labeled “Sea” in the score) is made up of the ambient sounds of waves and ocean. It is performed live, ad
lib. on a computer, with guidelines for timing and rhythm in the score.

“A Night on the Sea" SYNOPSIS: This scene explores humankind’s perpetual search for answers about its place in the universe: the ritual of asking what Charles Ives called "the perennial question of existence." The setting is based on Stephen Crane’s 1897 short story, “The Open Boat,” and the libretto draws from that work as well as Crane’s poetry. Three shipwreck survivors (the Captain, the Cook, and a Correspondent) are stranded in a small boat in the middle of the ocean. Night falls and their visceral panic shifts to a more contemplative existential frustration with Fate. The Correspondent questions why he should be made to perish on the sea after surviving the shipwreck intact. In response, the Captain and the Cook try to explain the indifference of the universe and the absurdity of looking for conclusive answers. All the while, the ocean – in its vast completeness – rolls on, drinking down the noise of men. CHARACTERS:
The Correspondent (CORR): A writer. Reflective. Struggles to find his place in nature and the universe in the face of (almost) certain death.
The Captain (CAPT): The leader of the group, confident. Was injured in the shipwreck. Responds to the Correspondent’s questions with authority.
The Cook (COOK): A sympathetic simpleton. A wise fool given to daydreaming. Also tries to help answer the Correspondent’s questions.
Blackout. The sound of the empty sea at night begins, as the curtain rises and lights come up. The Correspondent peers into the blackness, taking a turn at steering the small boat, trying to keep it steady in the waves. The Captain and the Cook are sleeping. I. CORR: If I am going to be drowned—if I am going to be drowned—if I am going to be drowned, why…? If I am going to be drowned—if I am going to be drowned—if I am going to be drowned, why, in the name of the seven mad gods who rule the sea, was I allowed to come thus far?
II. CAPT: (Having woken up, responds loudly.) There was a crimson clash of war. The lands turned black and bare; COOK: (Woken by the noise. Interrupts, half in a daze, comically.)
Huh? I was just thinking of ham sandwiches, and… CAPT: (to COOK) Blast you! (continues; to CORR) Women wept; Babes ran, wondering. COOK: Mmm. Ham sandwiches… CAPT: (ignoring COOK, continues, gesturing to CORR.) There came one who understood not these things. He said, “Why is this?” CORR: “Why is this?” CAPT: Whereupon a million strove to answer him. There was such intricate clamor of tongues, That still the reason was not. CAPT, CORR, and COOK: (in cacophony) There was such intricate clamor of tongues, That still the reason was not. III. CAPT and COOK: “Truth,” said a traveler. COOK: “Truth,” said a traveler, “Is a rock, a mighty fortress; “Often have I been to it, “Even to its highest tower, “From whence the world looks black.”

IV. COOK: Billie, what kind of pie do you like best? CORR and CAPT: Pie!?! CAPT: A learned man came to me once. He said, “I know the way,—come.” And I was overjoyed at this. Together we hastened. Soon, too soon, were we Where my eyes were useless, And I knew not the ways of my feet. I clung to the hand of my friend; But at last he cried, “I am lost!” COOK: I met a seer. He held in his hands The Book of Wisdom. “Sir,” I addressed him,
“Let me read.” He smiled. Then he opened the book And held it before me.— Strange that I should have grown so suddenly blind. CAPT and COOK: Strange that I should have grown so suddenly blind! V. CAPT and COOK: A man saw a ball of gold in the sky; He climbed for it, And eventually he achieved it— It was clay. Now this is the strange part: When the man went to earth And looked again, Lo, there was the ball of gold. Now this is the strange part: It was a ball of gold. CORR: A man said to the universe: “Sir, I exist!” CAPT and COOK: “However,” replied the universe, “The fact has not created in me “A sense of obligation.” VII. CAPT: (to CORR) Keep her steady now.
COOK: Funny they didn’t see us…Funny they never saw us… CAPT and COOK lie down, beginning to drift back to sleep, leaving CORR back alone on steering duty, peering out into the blackness once more. CORR: When it occurs to a man that nature does not regard him as important, at first wishes to throw bricks at the temple, and he hates deeply the fact that there are no bricks and no temples. CAPT: Steady now. A little more to the north. VIII. CORR: (resigned) If I should cast off this tattered coat, And go free into the mighty sky; If I should find nothing there But a vast blue, Echoless, ignorant,— What then? (to COOK) Will you spell me for a little while? COOK: Sure, Billie. Sure, Billie.
