Alaina Podmorow has accomplished a lot dur-ing the last nine years.

Set to graduate high school this year, Pod-morow, 17, has spent al-most a decade of her young life committed to building a human rights organization called Little Women for Little Women in Afghanistan. During that time and together with friends, she has built an organization that spreads across Can-ada and the US and has raised over $500,000 to help educate women and girls in Afghanistan.

Quite the accomplish-ment for someone who is not even out of high school. It even surprises

her a little.“I de nitely am sur-

prised in the sense that I never expected to be here, where I am today,” said Podmorow on Fri-day in an interview with the Lake Country Cal-endar.

“When I was nine years old and holding my rst fundraiser to raise enough money for one teacher for a year in Af-ghanistan I was thinking that would be my con-tribution. But after that I really knew I had a much bigger job to do. It’s sur-prising at times but it’s such an amazing feeling. have received.”Podmorow formed

Armstrong com-pleted her presentation with eight words that sparked something in Podmorow. And when she heard those words— “ e worst thing you can do is nothing” —Pod-morow was moved to take action.

e help wanted sign is going up at Interior Health—and the job to be lled is right at the top.

IH president and CEO Robert Halpenny has told the health au-thority’s board of direc-tors he plans to resign in the fall to “pursue other opportunities.”

“While I will miss the role and especial-ly the people I interacted with each day, it is time for me to pursue other opportunities and for a new CEO to lead Inter-ior Health and our com-mitted, passionate health professionals forward,” he said.

Halpenny has led In-terior Health since Janu-ary 2010.

IH board chairman

Erwin Malzer praised Halpenny for the job he has done as CEO.

“He has driven trans-

formative change across the organization with a primary focus on quality improvement in all ac-

tivities of the health au-thority,” said Malzer.

“ ere is not a facility, program or service with-in Interior Health that does not have his legacy stamped on it.”

Malzer said the IH board has appointed a search committee to dir-ect the process to nd a successor to Halpenny, who will remain on the job until this fall.

Researchers at UBC Okanagan are work-ing with local ranchers and stakeholders to de-termine the best way to protect drinking water on cattle grazing lands.

Engineering pro-fessor and microbiolo-gist Deborah Roberts is leading student research into drinking water sup-ply intakes and lake out- ows. eir study centres on water sources from areas with mixed uses including cattle graz-ing, camping, hiking, and motorized recreation.

“We have a lot of

community outreach built into this project and people are concerned about drinking water,” said Roberts. “At the same time, while there are best management practices in place—like fencing around a body of water to keep cat-tle out—water is still be-coming contaminated.”

Funding for the $150,000 three-year study has come from the Investment Agricul-ture Foundation, B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Re-source Operations, and

the North Okanagan Regional District. Other stakeholders include In-terior Health Author-ity, the BC Cattlemen’s Association, and local municipalities.

Ranchers pay fees to the provincial govern-ment to allow the cattle onto Crown Lands.

“Cattle graze in the watersheds in the sum-mer months,” said Rob-erts. “ e Ministry has done a lot of work and they now need to gather the scienti c evidence that these practices are working.”

Samples have been taken from several sources, including lakes, creeks, water intakes, and areas where cattle graze and wade into water-courses. Researchers are checking turbidity and levels of pathogens such as cryptosporidium and E.coli.

How long patho-gens survive in manure, whether rain and melt-

water wash them into drinking water sources and the e ects of natur-al contaminants such as leaves, pine needles, and bugs are all being inves-tigated.

As well as testing for water-borne illness-es, the students are tak-ing DNA samples to de-termine whether patho-gens found in the water are from cattle or wild-

life. Roberts suggests that cattle aren’t the only source of contamina-tion. Wildlife that can’t be fenced—bears, bea-vers, bobcats—and rec-reational users who leave gates open, add to the problem.

Weekly water sam-ples from Oyama Lake watershed, Vernon Creek, the Duteau Creek water system, and King Eddy Lake watershed have been collected over the last two summers by the team of four under-graduate and two gradu-ate students. e cur-

rent focus is on the Du-teau creek watershed. e goal, said Roberts, is to minimize the health risk for people while bal-ancing mixed uses and recreation in the water-shed.

“Everybody is work-ing together to im-prove the water qual-ity and at the same time they recognize the land has many di erent user groups,” said Roberts. “Everybody has some-thing to bring to the table and we all want the same end-result—safe drinking water.”

e dumping of an abandoned camper on Postill Lake Road near Ellison recently sparked a wave of reaction.

Outdoor enthusiasts vented their frustration while Regional District of the Central Okanagan sta were left scurry-ing to deal with the mess with the assistance of

one community-minded business.

Regional waste re-duction facilitator Rae Stewart said her o ce only learned of the aban-doned camper through a forum about it on the In-ternet.

“It’s a beautiful wil-derness corridor that’s heavily frequented by

outdoor groups and na-ture enthusiasts, so for someone to sully it with their garbage is a real travesty. And the longer the camper sits there, the worse,”Stewart said.

“Unfortunately, gar-bage begets more gar-bage. Some people see a pile and think they can just add to it.”

So Stewart was thank-ful that Mario’s Tow-ing in Kelowna came forward to volunteer to tow away the abandoned camper to the Glenmore land ll where it will be disposed of properly.

“Mario’s is o ering their services for the day, and we hugely appreciate their support. is kind

of removal job will re-quire heavy equipment, and plenty of manpower to get it gone. It’s just so frustrating that such a careless act has led to this,” Stewart said.

According to Stewart, illegal dumping is sadly all too common and can take many forms—an abandoned vehicle,

bush party leftovers, even someone inappropriately dumping yard waste.

“Not only is it an ugly blight on nature, but the mess left behind can also create wild re and other environmental haz-ards, not to mention en-dangering wildlife,” she said. “Plus it’s immensely costly to clean up, most

often at taxpayer’s ex-pense.”

ere is a process to allow the public to ght back against illegal dumping. Start by lling in an online report form at regionaldistrict.com/reportillegaldumping or call the Regional Waste Reduction O ce at 250-469-6250.

GUDRUN KRISTIN SCHULTZ(NEE SVEINBJORNSON)

April 24, 1929 to May 30, 2015

We regret to announce the death of our mother “Kris” after a brief illness. Kris grew up in Churchbridge, Sk. and after marrying our father John (d. Feb 16, 2003) raised three

chidren, Sheryl (VanDusen), Terry and Nancy(Derpak). They left Saskatoon to live in Kelowna and then

Winfi eld, enjoying their retirement by taking numerous camping trips, square dancing and producing wine and beer

that they shared with friends and family. Mom was always busy doing something -- baking, gardening, sewing andtravelling but will be most remembered for her gorgeous

hand knitted sweaters that were in great demand. She was a creative and hard working person, a beacon to anyone

who witnessed this whirlwind of a woman tackle any and all jobs that came her way. A child of the Depression, mom was

an environmentalist long before the rest of us; she never wasted anything. She loved bird life, especially the quail that she loved to feed and ‘chat’ with. Special thanks to the staff

at Rose Cottage in Kelowna (Kathy Orange), Delta View Life Enrichment Centre and the Peace Portal Seniors’

Village. Thank you also to her close friends Barbara and Joanne who gave their best to help mom through her

declining months. Kris will also be missed by herdaughter-in-law Jane, son-in-law Dave Derpak and

grandchildren Carrie, Todd, Jordan and Carly as well as her great grandchildren Isla and Ryan. Also missing her ar

numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held in Kelowna at First Memorial on August 7th, 2015

at l p.m. with interment to follow at 3 p.m.

KEVIN PARNELL

School o cials, par-ents and Lake Coun-try’s planning director

got together earlier this month as the issue of school catchment areas in the district is once again being studied, in

advance of an expected change for the 2016-17 school session.

A focus group that in-cluded about 20 par-

ents from each of Lake Country’s three ele-mentary schools as well as representatives from George Elliot Second-

ary, were joined by Cen-tral Okanagan school trustees, senior sta and Lake Country principals and vice-principals ear-

lier this month to begin the process of guring out how to re-con gure Lake Country’s catch-ment areas for its three elementary schools.

e issue was put on the back-burner ear-lier this year after sev-eral contentious pub-lic meetings saw a de-cision deferred and the catchments remained the same for the 2015-16 school year.

But now advance planning is underway with the school dis-trict going out to a broad range of parents. It’s a rst step to nding a solution to more evenly distribute elementary age children between David-son Road, Peter Greer and Oyama Traditional elementary schools.

“We wanted to get a good representation from the community so pretty much all of the neighbourhoods were going to be represented,” said school superintend-ent Hugh Gloster.

“We need to try to redirect the popula-tion more evenly,” Glos-

er continued. “Oyama is quite under-populated, Peter Greer has some space but is closer to the target population and Davidson Road is way over.”

School board o cials had hoped the catch-ment areas would be changed by this com-ing September; however, they had to put a stop to the process after back-lash from the commun-ity and parent groups who were upset with proposed changes.

So the school district capped Davidson Road enrolment, with any new students set to be bused to Peter Greer for this coming year.

Part of the problem is that most of the recent as well as planned future development in Lake Country falls within the Davidson Road catch-ment area.

girls from Lake Coun-try who have been with her almost from the start. e group has grown to include teams of little women right across the country.

Money raised by the group is sent to the Canadian Women for Women organization in Afghansitan where it is put towards four specif-ic areas of education: Teacher salaries, teach-er education, school sup-plies and a library project where a mobile library can head into di erent areas of Afghanistan.

Over the years more than 8,000 teachers have been trained and hun-dreds of thousands of girls have had the chance to get educated, thanks to Little Women for Little Women.

In 2012, after six years of work, Podmorow trav-eled to Afghansitan for the rst time to see the results of her hard e orts, and to get a rst hand look at what life is like in the ird World country.

“When I was there I was able to see the dif-ference education was making in these girls’ lives,” she said. “We were able to sit in the class-rooms and see what it is like for these girls and to see that they could reach their hopes and dreams one day. Being able to see these girls in the class-room with their eyes lit up because anything was

possible…it was amaz-ing.”

Earlier this month Podmorow was an-nounced as a winner of Plan Canada’s Top 20 Under 20 award for 2015, which recognizes Canada’s brightest youth who are making a mean-ingful impact in their communities and be-yond. Of the 20 award recipients this year, Pod-morow was also hon-oured with the 2015 Community Service Im-pact Award which recog-nizes exceptional leader-ship among the current Top 20 Under 20 recipi-ents.

Having accomplished so much before high school graduation has sparked an even great-er calling for the Lake Country youth as she gets set to head to uni-versity and continue her human rights work.

“In the fall I’m start-ing university and want-ing to major in political science and go into jour-nalism because I real-ly do feel a great drive in my work to restore hu-man rights and also be a voice for those that don’t have one and tell the stories that aren’t neces-sarily being told. I believe awareness and education are a huge part of life and I’m going to continue on with my work.”

“People need to stop throwing cigarette butts out and be careful out in the bush with camp res. Make sure you have the adequate tools on hand to control it and look at the weather conditions. Starting a camp re with the wind, that is just looking for disaster.”

On Tuesday, the forest re danger rating rose to high from moderate and

is expected to rise again to extreme in the next

few weeks as the weath-er forecast calls for more hot days.

Last Monday, the Central Okanagan set a record for the hottest June 8 since 1948 when the thermometer record-ed 34.9 C. e previous record was 32 C. In total, 14 temperature records were broken in B.C., with most in the south-ern Interior.

Environment Can-ada meteorologist Lisa Coldwells said rec-ords were broken in the southern Interior all the way throughout the Okanagan Valley to the Shuswap and the West Kootenays.

While temperatures cooled throughout the weekend, the weath-er was expected to con-tinue and Windsor said the re hazard is going to go to extreme in the near future.

“Environment Can-ada says by the mid-dle of June the re haz-ard will be extreme for 90 per cent of the prov-ince,” he said. “ e long-range forecast for West-ern Canada is predicting warmer and drying weather then normal in July and August.”

OK, it’s not so much a rain dance as a pancake dance.

outside in the warm Okanagan morning. I watered the garden. I spoke to my neighbour, even looked him in the eye, as we shared infor-mation the old fashioned way.

I didn’t open my com-puter and check Face-book to see what my friends, whom I never speak to, are up to.

I didn’t race to nd my phone and check Twit-ter to see a zillion experts stroking their egos.

I didn’t take a pic-ture of my gourmet pan-cakes and pin the recipe to Pinterest.

No, there was no In-ternet and it was an amazing throwback to so many years ago, when communication was face-to-face, or at least voice-to-voice and we weren’t a bunch of zom-bies being led around by our smart phone.

And it got me think-ing about life with-out the Internet, smart phones, social media, everything that has con-nected us closer than ever, but seems to be pushing us farther apart.

Life with no Internet. Wouldn’t it be great?

Imagine if you could have a co ee with a friend and you chatted about life and your kids and the weather instead of watching each other text people that aren’t even in the same build-ing or city.

Imagine if you didn’t have to keep your head

on a swivel while you walked down the street, making sure you weren’t hit by a texting driver or a skateboarder with his head in his phone.

Imagine if Facebook slacktivists put actual ef-fort into a worthy cause as opposed to just click-ing a mouse and hoping the world would become a better place.

Imagine (if you were a kid) and you zipped out of the house, riding your bike into the woods with

your friends and your parents didn’t even know where you were and had no way to get a hold of you!! ( e horror, think a million modern par-ents, faces buried in their iPads).

Imagine if you baked the best-looking cookies in the world and deliv-ered them to the home-less shelter instead of taking a picture of them to post on Instagram, waiting for likes and smiley faces.

Imagine the freedom that a world without the Internet would bring.

Is anyone else feeling the pressure? rowback ursday, Flashback Fri-day, hashtag this, peri-scope that.

Where does it all end?In all seriousness, we

In addition to row-back ursday where people post old pic-tures of themselves for no reason whatsoever, how about Social Media Freedom Day where we leave the phone at home and volunteer in the community.

Yes the Internet has made life better but it’s also made it worse. It’s made us a self-centred lot. I mean does anyone really need to know that you just bought a scoot-er and are having co ee downtown?

For one beautiful morning last week, it was tough not to think that the world was a bet-ter place before this on-slaught of social media dominated our lives.

Now give me a second so I can tweet/FB this column out. I sure hope you like it. ;-)

e state of Texas suf-fers a crushing drought. Texas senator Ted Cruz doesn’t believe in climate change. But a report on the Internet claims he prayed for relief from a changed climate. He prayed for rain.

Four days later, it rained.

I’m sure Cruz be-lieved that his prayers produced results. He ap-pealed to his god, and his god responded with a downpour. And how—it ooded most of Dal-las. More than 30 people died.

Somehow, I doubt if the residents of Dallas prayed to get inundated.

It brings to mind the old saying, “Be careful what you pray for, in case you get it.”

Following the oods, Cruz changed his tune. On a Texas radio inter-view, he attributed the ood to—well, no, you should hear it direct-ly from him: “You know scientists will blame it on climate change or mum-bo jumbo like that, but I know what’s really going on. e heavy rain is ob-viously caused by Native Americans doing their rain dances and what not, and if we don’t ad-dress the Native Amer-ican issue better in this State, we’ll be seeing fur-ther ooding in years to

that caused the oods af-ter all. But it was a ritual that invoked supernatur-al forces.

Our dog would be de-lighted to know that a presidential candidate shares her delusions.

Having said all that, our dog—and the In-dian sadhu, and the al-leged Native American dancers—got one thing right. If you want a re-sponse, you have to ask.

I think about people

who are desperate-ly lonely, but are afraid to reach out. People who struggle to do things themselves, instead of asking a neighbour for a hand. People who su er with constant pain, but won’t risk unorthodox treatments.

Maybe we don’t have to do a rain dance. But we do have to take the initiative to ask.

For the record…

One of the most satisfying aspects of public

life for me is the oppor-tunity it gives to help improve the health and well-being of the people I represent, you.

My monthly health forums focus on a wide range of topics on good physical and men-tal health and have had a positive impact. ey help people identify areas that need improvement and give them avenues to make positive changes in their day-to-day lives.

Regular readers also know my newspaper col-umn frequently tackles health and wellness

issues for young and old and everyone in be-tween—even the family pet.

It was extremely grati-fying when 300 people showed up on March 28 for an event I spear-

headed—the rst Knox Mountain Walk for Health and World Peace. e walk was designed not only to promote physical activity, but also to celebrate our com-munity’s diversity and ability to live in harmony, despite our di erences.

In the spirit of helping improve the health and well-being of the people I represent, I’ve decid-ed to organize a gather-ing on June 21—Fath-er’s Day—on the lawn across from the Kelowna Family Y on Hartman Road to celebrate the International Day of Yoga.

Okanagan residents

can be part of a global event as cities around the world celebrate the rst International Day of Yoga, which was de-clared by the United Na-tions General Assembly at the urging of Indian Prime Minister Naren-dra Modi.

e principles of yoga align with my philoso-phy of achieving life

satisfaction through a healthy mind, body and spirit.

Yoga has been de-scribed as an art and sci-ence for healthy living—something for which the Okanagan Valley is re-nowned.

I want to emphasize that you don’t have to be

an active yoga practition-er to take part on Inter-national Day of Yoga. It is for all ages, from be-ginners and those who have never tried yoga, to experts.

I fall into the category of those who have never tried yoga, but I am look-ing forward to this event along with my colleague Steve omson, MLA for Kelowna-Mission, as we follow the direction of Melanie Morrissette of Abs-tract Fitness.

ere is an add-ed incentive for partici-pants, too. Everyone who takes part is eligible for a Gateway Casino prize package consisting of a two-night stay at the Penticton Lake City Ca-sino, two tickets to the

Elvis Festival, and a two-night stay at the Grand Villa Casino in Burnaby, plus dinner.

What better way to celebrate Father’s Day and the rst day of sum-mer than by joining your friends and neighbours for one hour of yoga and fellowship, from 10 to 11 a.m.

It’s a simple step to-ward achieving bet-ter health for body and mind, and maybe win a great Father’s Day gift for someone special in your life…or just for you.

See you there.Norm Letnick is

Open letter to Madame Premier:

I’m a B.C.-based lm-maker, born and raised here. I love our province deeply. I love our people, I love our culture, and most of all I love the un-paralleled natural beauty that de nes our province.

Last summer, I learn-ed of the imminent threat that zebra and quagga mussels pose to our province.

While I sat with my family on an idyllic B.C. beach next to a sparkling lake lled with people swimming, boating, and shing, I realized that everything in front of me would be destroyed if the mussels got into B.C.

I had to do something, so I decided to make a short lm. At the time, I assumed that the gov-ernment of B.C. must simply be unaware of this threat, or at least un-aware of its magnitude. I hoped that my lm would help change this.

You can watch the ve-minute lm at www.protectourfreshwater.ca.

I know now that your government is aware. However, for some rea-son, you have dedicat-

ed a mere $1.3 million, spread out over three years, to combat a prob-lem that has cost over $6 billion in North America so far, and has been a tra-gedy for every commun-ity that has faced it.

Your current action plan is entitled, Ear-ly Detection and Rapid Response.

is is based on a glaring falsehood. In 25 years, in hundreds of lakes and rivers across North America, it has been proven again and again that eradication does not exist.

Zebra and quag-ga mussels, once in a lake or river, cannot be stopped. Since this in an established, well-known fact, let me ask you this: What exactly are you planning to rapidly re-spond with?

Prevention is the only option. Period. e only way to protect our prov-ince is to stop and in-spect every single boat that crosses our borders. If you miss even one boat, that could be the boat that causes a catas-trophe in our province.

You said on CTV News that with your cur-

rent preventative pro-gram of three roving in-spection teams, you are “watching to see what works.”

Let me point out what should be obvious. If any part of your program doesn’t “work,” the re-sult will be the infesta-tion and subsequent de-struction of our lakes and rivers. Putting out a half-hearted ‘test’ program is not a luxury that British Columbians can a ord. Failure is simply not an option. e only thing that will work is 100 per cent border protection. Everyday that you resist doing what is necessary and right, you gamble with the future of every community in B.C.

You have said that you are working with other provinces and states to alert you if a contamin-ated boat is incoming. So you are outsourcing the protection of B.C. to outside jurisdictions which have their own lakes and rivers to worry about. Wouldn’t it make sense, considering what is at stake, to work with them and have man-datory, permanent in-spection stations at our borders—the same as what Alberta and several other jurisdictions have?

You have said you will continue to review the program and see if more action is needed. Time is not a luxury we have. Anytime this summer or next, a boat could eas-

ily slip past your very weak border defence and launch in our wat-ers. en, your only op-tion will be to sit back and watch as the mussels inevitably spread to every lake and river in B.C.

e freshwater eco-systems of our prov-ince will be turned up-side down. e salmon, trout, and kokanee will all but disappear. Our beaches, riverbeds and lake oors will be a car-pet of razor-sharp shells. As the mussels invade our drinking-water sys-tems, agricultural irrig-ation systems, re-sup-pression systems, and hydroelectric dams, every B.C. resident will face steep increases in taxes and bills. Perhaps worst of all, our lakes and riv-ers, central to our iden-tity and way-of-life, will become unrecogniz-able. e damage will be permanent.

You have the power and the resources to pre-vent this. e people of B.C. are calling for action. is is an emer-gency and should be treated as such. Why do you delay? Why are you not doing the absolute maximum to protect our province?

Is B.C. not worth it to you?

Brynne Morrice, Vernon

▼ INVASIVE SPECIES

Clark government seems OK with trying to get rid of mussels after they’re in our lakes

To the editor: I frequently drive

Hwy. 97 from Lake Country to Kelowna, in the early morning hours.

e amount of water that accumulates on the roadway from the irriga-tion systems in the cen-tre meridian is astonish-ing to me. At times the intersection at Sexsmith Road has been wet from one side to the other. at’s a lot of pavement.

What’s the deal?Is the intention to

propagate more as-phalt? Are you supplying free car washes? O er-ing wiper blade testing? Dust control? Challen-ging hydroplaning driv-er skills?

Would the accident report claim road condi-tions were bare and dry or bare and dry and wet in certain sections?

I have experienced signi cant hydroplan-ing while my wind-shield wipers were clear-ing the spray from an-other vehicle. at’s a lot of water.

Sidewalks and park-ing lots are also being watered with precise, timed regularity. ere are many areas of walk-ways made impassable by the overwatering of use-less strips of grass. Not many pedestrians require safe passage in the ear-ly hours, but it would ap-pear sidewalks are only open during certain hours.

I am sure this stretch of road is but one ex-ample of extremely poor

water management. ere needs to be a

hot-line established to report such waste of a ‘regulated’ resource as precious as our water supply.

I laugh at the ridicu-lousness of literature be-ing distributed and web-sites created by local gov-ernments to supposedly educate the public and promote proper water use and conservation when this situation con-tinues season after sea-son after season.

e Okanagan WaterWise website rec-ommends landscaping with native species, using xeriscape landscaping and not competing with areas which receive more natural precipitation, like Vancouver or Seattle.

It also recommends to check irrigation systems to ensure everything is operating e ciently: ‘Are the sprinklers watering the sidewalks or park-ing lot?’

e City of Kelow-na Water Regulation By-

law reads: “No property owner shall cause or per-mit water resulting from an outdoor landscape ir-rigation system to ow wastefully on to non-ir-rigated areas, walks, roadways or structures.”

Another part states: “No person shall cause or permit water to be dis-charged from the City Water Utility for no use-ful purpose.”

Is the city exempt from its own bylaw?

Perhaps “smart con-trollers” should be in-stalled in the roadways to measure the moisture content of the pavement or road shoulders.

Do the landscaping materials and the irriga-tion systems in the me-ridians and along the roadsides correspond with the recommen-dations cited in the by-law and the WaterSmart program?

Do the estimated cal-culations for landscape water use include the in-credible waste of water in the “landscape water budget”(maximum al-lowable annual water usage for an outdoor landscape.)?

Are these wasteful acts included in the calcula-tions and statistics of the City of Kelowna’s Water Sustainability Plan?

ere is no water pro-vider speci cally as-signed to Hwy. 97 as per any maps provided by the Kelowna Joint Water Committee.

I encourage a Water-Smart representative to drive Hwy. 97, south-bound, from Edwards Road onward, between 4 and 5 a.m. for an es-timated, tiny sampling of very UN-smart, very UN-wise water usage.

Do you lie awake at night with an aching shoul-

der? Do you feel sharp grabs of pain while reaching up into the cup-board or into the back seat of your car?

Did your shoulder pain start one day with-out any injury that you can remember?

Shoulder pain can keep us awake at night and limit our day-to-day activities—even the most basic ones like washing our hair or get-ting dressed. In this col-umn we are going to talk about how shoul-der problems can start and what there is to do about it.

First let’s talk about what is inside your shoulder.

e shoulder is what we call a ‘ball and sock-et’ joint. is means that the top of the upper arm bone has a ball-like sur-face, and this ball con-nects with the concave surface of the shoul-der blade, similar to a golf ball sitting on a tee. is type of joint (like

your hip joint) is build for maximum mobil-ity. Having so much mo-

bility is a good thing be-cause it allows our shoul-der and arm to reach in

all di erent directions. However, this excess mo-bility can also predispose

the shoulder to injury. Almost everyone

has heard of the rotator

often the muscles that are injured in the shoul-der because they can be-come pinched inside the joint (referred to as ‘im-pingement’).

e rotator cu mus-cles work alongside the muscles of your shoul-der blade to ensure that the ball is always pos-itioned in the centre of the socket so as to avoid pinching, in ammation and pain. Impingement can occur if any of these shoulder muscles be-come tight or weak or if the neck and upper back are too sti to allow for proper arm movement.

People who spend

a large portion of their days sitting often be-come very weak in their shoulder blade muscles while at the same time also becoming tight in their chest, upper back and neck. Others spend a lot of their workday

doing repetitive move-ments with their arm that also can create irri-tation and muscle imbal-ances in the shoulder. At night many of us tend to lay on our ‘favourite’ side while sleeping which squeezes the blood out of the shoulder thus caus-ing further irritation and preventing recovery from the strain during the day.

If you start to have shoulder pain the best strategy is to avoid the movement that is creat-ing the pain and to ice the shoulder for 15 min-utes 2-3 times per day for the initial three days (after three days switch to heat for 20 minutes, 2-3 times per day to in-

crease blood ow/heal-ing). Make sure to con-tinue to move the shoul-der in motions that don’t hurt in order to prevent your shoulder from get-ting sti . Also try as best as you can to not sleep on the painful shoulder at night in order to allow healing.

If the pain does not subside within a week it is advisable to see your health care profession-al so that the speci c rea-son for the shoulder pain can be diagnosed. In physiotherapy, pain con-trol and stretching out tight muscles are usual-ly the initial goals. Treat-ment then fairly quick-ly progresses to focusing on strengthening specif-ic muscles as well as in-creasing overall exibil-ity. Often the conversa-tion of prevention will focus on daily stretching or yoga as well as em-phasizing good posture while sitting.

I hope that you have learned a little bit about how the shoulder works and what can cause shoulder pain. If you are starting to have nagging shoulder pain or tight-ness, remember that it is much easier to deal now than ‘down the road.’

Happy summer every-one.

ere is nothing like shing with your best friend.

Last week at the Hall Road kids shing pond in East Kelowna, kids from several area ele-mentary schools had the chance to do just that, thanks to a program called Get to Know and its Wild Festival for Youth.

Kids from area schools were bused to the Hall Road shing pond and to Okanagan College to get tips on shing, build birdhouses, learn about birds of prey and get an overall education on the great outdoors.

“ e Get to Know Program has been in-spiring connections be-tween children and na-ture in the outdoors for over a decade,” explained Jenna Smith with Get to Know. “ e festival is a time for school age youth from across the Oka-nagan to discover region-al wildlife, explore trails and to get kids engaged with the outdoors.”

At the Hall Road pond, kids were en-gaged with several activ-ities, from nature hikes to shing in the pond, stocked as a kids shing pond by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC.

Friends Zoe and An-gelina, Grade 4 students

at Chute Lake Elemen-tary, certainly were en-gaged with the sh-

ing activity as they ex-changed casts into the pond and waited for a nibble.

“It’s fun because I get to do it with my best friend,” said Zoe after looping a long cast into the middle of the pond, which was also ripe with swimming turtles. “It’s going to be cool if I catch a sh because I’ve only caught one other one be-fore.”

Students were taught the basics of casting with the spin-casting rods by summer students with the Freshwater Fish-eries Society, the group in charge of B.C.’s sh stocking programs.

Jordan D’sa, a crimin-ology and environmental studies student, says it’s rewarding to be able to teach kids about the out-doors.

“It’s fun once you get through all the tan-gles,” he said of the an-cient shing problem of tangled line. “To see the smiles on their faces is priceless. A lot of the kids here are experienced because the Okanagan is such an outdoorsy place.”

e Get to Know or-ganization was found-ed in 1999 by renowned naturalist and paint-er Robert Bateman and current director Mary Krupa-Clark in Kelow-na with a mandate to promote environment-al education for youth, teaching them how their positive interaction with their local wildlife can help preserve our natural wonders for generations to come.
