Questions surround-ing the agriculture com-munity, how to best mar-ket Okanagan fruit and vegetables and the can-didates relationship with Lake Country were front and centre last week as the Lake Country Chamber of Commerce held a federal election all-candidates forum.

Along with the other

topics such as the econ-omy (see story page A3), candidates Ron Can-nan of the Conserva-tives, Norah Bowman of the NDP and Stephen Fuhr of the Liberals were quizzed on a var-iety of topics close to the hearts of Lake Country residents including help for the agriculture in-dustry.

e candidates were asked about any new

plans for the agricul-ture industry in the party platforms.

Conservative Ron Cannan said his party will continue to look into more technol-ogy advancements that could help the industry and try to break down inter-provincial trade barriers to make Oka-nagan fruit widely avail-able across Canada.

“We partnered with

the province to change the processing at the Packinghouse to a brine so that if there is a spill they can just clean it up instead of having to evacuate the plant,” he said. “We will continue to work with technol-ogy and innovation to make sure we have the best supply available and to partner with the prov-ince on replanting pro-grams.”

Norah Bowman of the NDP said her party would bring in pay rst legislation to ensure growers are paid rst when they sell prod-ucts to the USA as op-posed to what happens now when a buyer may go broke before paying the local supplier. She also said they want to work on increasing the amount of fruit being planted.

“We have some of the best quality soft fruits in the world so we’re go-ing to make some invest-ment in infrastructure and research so that we have a strong indus-try,” she said, adding they will introduce a program called from farm to fork to increase the access to farm fresh food.

Liberal Stephen Fuhr said his party has money set aside for sector speci c improvements which includes the agri-culture industry as well as promoting consumpz-tion of Okanagan fruits.

“ at will improve the e ciency and technol-ogy that will help farm-ers do what they do, it’s money set aside for improvement in agricul-ture whether it be irrig-ation or pesticide help. I’d like to work with the community to nd out exactly what they need so I can go to Ottawa and bring it back for them.”

All three candidates were also asked the ques-tion of why their party should form government at this time.

Cannan was asked why the Conservatives should be re-elected with

many Canadians saying it’s time for change.

“We’ve got a prov-en track record with our Prime Minster of sol-id leadership not only at home. We are in the second round of bal-anced budget, we have the lowest tax rate in 50 years, we created 1.3 mil-lion jobs since the re-cession. It’s not time for change, time to go into de cit situations. We are doing this with a bal-anced budget. It’s s-cally responsible and we are looked at around the world as a leader.”

Bowman was asked why the NDP should be given a chance now, after never forming the feder-al government.

“Right now the NDP is the federal opposition,” she said. “(Leader) Tom Mulcair has been stand-ing up to Harper for four years. We voted against

Bill C 51 because it was against the principles of being Canadian and we voted against omnibus bills taking away things like health care for refu-gees and taking away protection of our lakes and waters and slashing funding to health care in the future.”

Fuhr (Liberals) was asked why Canadians should elect the Liberals after they were decimat-ed in the 2011 election.

“ e Liberals were decimated in the 2011 election because they de-served to be decimated. ere was institutional arrogance that was nau-seating and essential-ly Canadians sent a mes-sage that they should probably think about sending again very soon,” he said. “When we see government deviate from what we want, we need to send a message. to answer each query without follow up ques-tions from a moderator or the audience.

Lake Country May-or James Baker said it’s unfortunate that the Ke-lowna-Lake Country race is without a Green Party candidate as he felt the Greens had some good environmental and social policies. But Baker said his municip-ality will work with who-ever is in power, trying to access federal funding to help with infrastructure as well as with social pro-grams such as a ordable housing.

“What I’m hearing is each of the candidates and parties in our area have pretty similar policy with regard to infra-structure. All of them are saying they would cer-tainly be contributing towards infrastructure. To a large extent things that we have to deal

with at local government level, we need funding from both senior govern-ment, federal and prov-incial. We have certain-ly bene tted from it in the past whether our lo-cal candidates is in op-position or government, they have been very ef-fective in getting things for local government.”

Other topics includ-ed questions about the chronic shortage of doc-

tors, how the parties would help promote the agriculture industry as well as the legalization of marijuana, one of the few topics the parties were split on.

Bowman said the NDP would decrim-inalize marijuana im-mediately upon elec-tion allowing them to start the process of tak-ing the control of pot out of the hands of organ-

ized crime. Fuhr said the Liberals will legalize ma-rijuana but said there are more pressing issues such as the economy. Cannan said he thinks the issue needs an adult discus-sion but is uncomfort-able with either legaliza-tion or decriminalization, saying it’s a poor message to kids to make it avail-able the same way alco-hol is.

e federal election is Oct. 19.

For the rst time in her lifetime, Arlene Brenner is fully informed and ready to vote in this year’s federal election.

e Lake Coun-try resident, legally deaf since birth, Brenner says this year’s election cam-paign, including Wed-nesday’s all candidate’s forum in Lake Coun-try, was the rst time she truly was able to follow an election forum.

A pair of interpreters provided sign language at the forum, held by the Lake Country Chamber of Commerce and fea-turing the three candi-dates for federal o ce in Kelowna-Lake Country.

“It was a wonder-ful learning experi-ence,” Brenner wrote in an e-mail to the Lake

Country Calendar. “Now I know who to vote for. It’s the rst time in my life. I have not been able to attend because they were not communica-tion-accessible for years.”

Brenner, who ran for municipal council in Lake Country last year, has been an advocate for the hard of hearing com-munity for years, push-ing for more accessible meetings and the abil-ity to follow things like council meetings, all candidate’s forums and other events.

During last year’s mu-nicipal election, she was unable to follow ques-tions during meetings as no interpreters were provided. But she kept pushing and with the help of the Lake Coun-try Chamber, she was able to get better in-

formed about the federal election this time around.

“In the last muni-cipal election we be-came aware how di -cult it was going to be to have Arlene aware of questions and of what her fellow candi-dates were saying in an-swering these questions,” said Chamber manager Corrinne Cross-Fran-son. “When we start-ed planning this feder-al election forum Arlene worked with us to see about funding for an in-terpreter.”

More money for infrastructure projects, an aging workforce, Can-

ada’s reliance on the oil industry, a recession, de cits and investing in small- and medium-size businesses.

All of those topics and more were raised by the three candidates running for federal o ce in the Kelowna-Lake Coun-

try riding as they an-swered questions about the economy in front of a boisterous crowd of about 200 citizens in

Lake Country on Wed-nesday night.

When asked about the three most pressing issues facing the Can-

adian economy, the can-didates had a variety of responses.

Incumbent Conserv-ative MP Ron Cannan told the crowd that one of the biggest issues fa-cing Canada is the aging workforce and the need for partnerships to con-tinue to grow our nation’s skilled labour pool.

“ ere was a study done that said in the val-ley by 2020 there is going to be a need for 100,000 jobs and they anticipate only having about half of those lled so we need to ensure we are working with Okanagan College and UBC Okanagan to ensure students have the skills that are going to be needed,” said Can-nan. e Conservatives, he said, have an $80-bil-lion infrastructure pro-gram to help commun-ities deal with things like aging roads.

“ e government doesn’t create jobs, entre-preneurs create jobs, so we have to make sure the money is there for entre-preneurs to take their idea to market.”

Liberal candidate Ste-phen Fuhr hammered away at Canada’s current job creation record and economic growth and said a Liberal plan would put $125 billion towards helping Canadian cities deal with infrastructure shortages.

“We are in a reces-sion and a de cit,” he said. “We have the worst

economic growth rec-ord since the 1930s and the worst job creation re-cord since World War II. We’re going to invest money from the ground up. We’re going to put more into the pockets of Canadians with a more generous tax-free child bene t and a lower mid-dle income tax bracket. To create jobs you invest in infrastructure. at’s the most cost-e ective way that you create jobs.”

NDP candidate Nor-ah Bowman said the rst thing Canada must do is cut its reliance on the oil industry and in-vest money in alternative energy and innovation.

“We need an oil in-dustry in Canada, we need to keep it going, but we also need to diversify so the NDP is propos-ing to stop subsidizing the oil companies to the degree they are subsid-ized and use some of that money to invest in al-ternative energy and in-novation,” said Bowman. “ e economy is driven by families and people going to work and school so we’re going to create one million child care spaces at no more than $15 a day.”

e economy was just one of several topics the candidates touched on during the all-candi-dates forum, which had pre-submitted questions, allowing the candidates

Kelowna Shelter3785 Casorso Road250-861-7722

We’d like you to meet Bart. He is a mature canine who loves life and just about everything in his life - except thunderstorms. He thoroughly enjoys cuddles and is a great walker on the leash, and, oh yes, running too. Our Volunteer Dog Walks also tell us that he likes the water - go figure! Like any Husky breed, he would do best in an active home where he has the opportunity to get his fair share of exercise and fresh air. Bart has lived with children in his previous home, but, as always, we highly recommend all family members meet their possible new canine family friend before making that final commitment. It is in everyone’s best interest if you have experience with the Husky breed or at the very least, do extensive research on the breed. He is true to the breed traits in as far as he is affectionate, good natured, smart and wants to please his pack leader. If you are confident that “Bart the Husky” would fit into your life and lifestyle, than please ask the Kelowna SPCA Staff for a one-on-one visit with Bart.

I n the northern hemisphere, autumn has come.

Brown leaves drift down o my oak tree. My oriental lilies look as dead as a handful of chopsticks sticking out of the soil. One rose bravely blooms on.

It’s the time of year when our thoughts turn involuntarily to the com-ing winter. And to death.

In her Tradition-al Iconoclast blog, Isa-bel Gibson mused: “ e grasses glow as Octo-ber light falls sideways against their end-of-sea-son mix of colours. Fall winds rustle their drying stalks and fronds.”

I hear echoes of a psalmist’s lament: “As for mortals,” says Psalm 103, “their lives are like grass…the wind passes over it and it is gone.”

Isabel and I have both had acquaintances die, suddenly and un-expectedly, in the last few weeks. Life seems fragile.

“As I poke bulbs into soil,” Isabel wrote, “I can-not be certain that I will see these tulips bloom…As I plant, I consider the grasses, admiring their fall colours, even enjoy-ing the gentle death rat-

We want to hear your

opinions on issues going

on in our communityThere was a

urry of excite-ment in the B.C.

legislature last week, as Delta South independ-ent MLA Vicki Hun-tington released docu-ments suggesting that a multinational manu-facturing company con-tinued to buy up B.C. farms for carbon o sets after they said last June they would stop.

False alarm, as it turns out. Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick [Liber-al MLA Kelowna-Lake Country] clari ed that three more farms in the Peace and Cariboo re-gion had indeed been bought, but the company was merely following legal advice to close deals on farms that it had al-ready agreed to purchase.

e company, Brit-ish-based cleaning prod-uct and pharmaceutical maker Reckitt Benck-iser (RB) con rmed this. A company o cial re-iterated that its program to buy farms and replant them with trees is sus-pended.

By the time the B.C. government became

aware of this global pub-lic relations scheme, thanks to the work of NDP MLA Lana Popham and others, about 10,000 hectares of farmland was already planted with seedlings. RB initially said they were buying up aban-doned and unproduct-ive farms, but local gov-ernment o cials dis-puted that.

RB soon realized that undermining already precarious farming com-munities was going to provide the opposite of the green publicity they sought, at least in B.C. e company told me it is now looking to switch its carbon o set program

to replanting forest areas depleted by pine beetle and re.

I’ll believe that when I see it, but on the face of it, this sounds almost as questionable as con-verting farmland back to forests. Pine forests need re to regenerate, so res have been part of the re-generation of the eco-system since the retreat of the last Ice Age.

Beetle-kill areas are already coming back, and they were never com-pletely denuded in any case, so the notion of manual planting these areas seems imprac-tical. Most are now criss-crossed with deadfall and all but impassible.

Another situation that received little pub-lic attention was a report issued late this summer by the B.C. Forest Prac-tices Board about forest stewardship plans.

e board reviewed 43 stewardship plans from all regions of B.C., pre-pared as required under provincial law by forest tenure holders on Crown land. ey are supposed to deal with things like

where roads go and how streams are protected.

is is the manage-ment system put in place in 2003, when the B.C. Liberal govern-ment changed its ap-proach to forest manage-ment. Gone was the NDP’s infamous sev-en-volume “Forest Prac-tices Code,” which at-tempted to micromanage every detail of a timber licence, right down to in-specting for litter left at a logging site.

In came “re-sults-based” forest management, where li-cence holders had to produce a plan showing stream protection and other values. e For-est Practices Board has found these plans often aren’t good for much, al-though results are gen-erally good when they follow up with on-the-ground audits of actual timber harvest areas.

e investigation found that many of the plans cover “vast and overlapping areas of the province, and were written using legal lan-guage that makes them

very di cult for pub-lic understanding or re-view.” Little has changed since a similar nding in 2006.

During that time, the forests ministry was turned into For-ests, Lands and Natur-al Resource Operations, with greatly increased responsibility over wild-life, mining, gas drilling and so on.

Columbia River-Rev-elstoke MLA Norm Macdonald, who trav-eled the province as NDP forests critic in re-cent years, says the prob-lem now is there just aren’t enough people on the ground to assess what’s going on in our huge expanse of Crown land.

Meanwhile the city media covers profession-al protesters issuing de-mands about the Wal-bran Valley.

“As I poke bulbs into soil,” Isabel wrote, “I can-not be certain that I will see these tulips bloom…As I plant, I consider the grasses, admiring their fall colours, even enjoy-ing the gentle death rat-

tle made by their stalks and the wind. When-ever it comes, I hope that I will slide into my own inevitable winter as beautifully, as peacefully, as rightly, somehow.”

But perhaps grass is not the best metaphor for life and death. Be-cause grass goes brown, but it does not die. It looks dead under the burning summer sun, or under winter’s bitter frosts. But when weather changes, when the rains return, the grass springs up once more, lush and green.

Tulips and lilies and oak trees do not die in winter either. ey sim-ply hibernate. So their greening again next spring is not really a resurrection.

Perhaps that’s why we like to use them as a g-ure of speech. Because their “resurrection” im-plies that perhaps death is not the end for us, either.

Annuals might of-fer us a more valid meta-phor. Because annuals really do die. ey bloom their little hearts out during summer, bright-ening the earth with col-our and fragrance. And then they die. And they cannot know—assum-ing plants are capable of knowing anything—

whether the seeds they leave behind will pro-duce new owers next spring, or will disappear.

Just like us.We don’t like to think

that when we’re gone, we’re gone. Death is not just a period of dor-mancy. When we “slide into our inevitable win-ter,” as Isabel put it, we don’t come back in spring. Maybe there’s a heaven; maybe there’s re-incarnation. But both of those will be in a dif-ferent garden.

We don’t pop up again, like sliced bread in a toaster.

And if we have trouble accepting our own death, we are petri- ed by the possible death of our cherished institu-tions and organizations. We almost dare not im-agine the death of our churches, for example, even though we claim to believe in a life af-ter death. We know our churches must change. But we want to know how they will be re-born before we’re willing to let go of their current incar-nation.

We fear that the seeds we have scattered will not take root and bloom, after we’re gone. Instead, we want to preserve our plants in an arti cial hot-house, just in case.

We should learn from those annuals.

Open letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harp-er and the leaders of all other political parties:

Re: Asking for an im-mediate commitment to bring more Syrian refu-gees to Canada.

We are writing this open letter to you and to the leaders of all federal parties with an appeal for politics and campaigning to be put aside and for the government to take immediate, concrete and generous steps to signi -cantly boost Canada’s re-sponse to the mount-ing Syrian refugee crisis. Although your govern-ment’s recent step is in the right direction, it still falls far short of what we

would consider a “quick and compassionate” re-sponse to this humani-tarian disaster.

“ e human rights crisis in Syria is global. e staggering refu-gee crisis it has pro-voked is global. e solu-tions must be global. is means it is also Canada’s crisis and we must act generously in response to the growing num-ber of refugees who are faced with the impos-sible choice of remain-ing in desperate condi-tions in refugee camps or of making terrify-ing journeys and risk-ing their lives to escape endless su ering. We are disappointed with

the numbers being con-sidered for resettlement in Canada and strong-ly encourage the Can-adian government to im-mediately commit to in-creasing the number of refugees admitted to at least 50,000 by the end of 2016; this number is somewhat arbitrary but intended to make the point that none of the political parties have committed to a large enough number to date.

“In solidarity with Amnesty International we call on our govern-ment to urgently take the following steps:

She says people take for granted their hearing and many public events don’t take into account the fact that there is a large hard of hearing community, not just people who are deaf but also seniors and others who have hear-ing loss. She says the next step is having closed captioning available for those who are hard of hearing and can’t under- stand sign language.

“Arlene is a great ad-vocate and has certain-ly brought awareness of the challenges she faces to our attention,” said Cross-Franson.

As for Brenner she says she is ready to vote and it is a great relief to nally be fully aware and informed to cast her bal-lot.

Lake Country residents will be forking out cash for upgrades to roads.

Last week, Lake Country district coun-cil considered nance strategy options for the Transportation for To-morrow plan.

“ ere was a majority vote for property taxes over the next 20 years,” said Mayor James Baker,

adding that the other op-tion for funding was a parcel tax.

Transportation for Tomorrow looks at all aspects of transportation for the long-term and speci cally maintenance, renewal and improve-ments.

“It’s something that needs doing and we will also go after grants to try and provide some (tax) relief,” said Baker.

Also, council held pre-liminary discussions about the 2016 munici-pal budget.

“We will pare it down from the wish list to something achievable,” said Baker, adding that a projected tax increase has not been determined yet.

On Oct. 3 Lake Country RCMP responded to several thefts from vehicles in the Okanagan Cen-tre area.

Police have seen an increase in these types of thefts over the past couple of weeks. e reports reveal that someone is targeting unlocked vehicles at night but the suspect(s) have also broken windows to gain ac-cess.

In one report, an unlocked home was entered while the occupants slept.

e most common items stolen include cred-it cards, cash and wallets but have also included note-book computers and other electronics.

Police ask that the public follow these tips to help prevent future thefts:

• At home, light your driveway at night. Elsewhere, park in well-lit areas near pedestrian tra c

• Do not leave wallets or purses containing person-al identi cation in an unattended vehicle or you could become a victim of identity theft

• Remove all valuables from plain view, even if your car is locked. Take the items with you or secure them in the trunk out of sight

• Report any suspicious persons or activities near a vehicle in your neighbourhood to police immediately, and let the police determine if it’s a crime in progress

• Always lock your car, even at home or in a secure underground parking.

Acceptance for all takes broad strokes in Lake Country

people in Lake Country,” said Lock. “We thought it would be nice if Lake Country could do some-thing to recognize ac-ceptance and make a statement that we are in-clusive and accept di-versity.”

e rainbow coloured sidewalk painting—which Lock called You, Me, We, A Pride Paint-ing Project—mirrors the rainbow colours that have signi ed acceptance of the lesbian, gay, bisex-ual, transgender com-munity.

“ e response I have been getting has been fantastic,” said Lock. “Even from people I don’t even know. is was kind of a pilot pro-ject so if we could do it in the spring and maybe do the entire sidewalk, I think the community would be behind it.”

Lock said the idea came from movements from other communities such as Kelowna that has four rainbow coloured

cross-walks to promote acceptance. She said it would be great if Lake Country could join that movement in the spring.

e painted sidewalk is out front of George Elliot high school and was painted using ex-terior paint, meaning it won’t be permanent.

But Lock is hoping to make it more permanent in the future.

“ is was kind of guerrilla art,” she said. “If we do this in the spring, maybe we can do some-thing proper. As art-ists in our community, I think that is part of our responsibility to get out there and make a state-ment.”

Lock was helped in the project by Petrina McNeil, Yolanda Rob-inson, Megan Ross, Rick Davidson, Neena Sood, Elizabeth Henderson, Tara Milne and Jamie McEwan, all from Lake Country, and special guest artist Rena Warren, from Kelowna.

e painted sidewalk is out front of George Elliot high school and was painted using ex-terior paint, meaning it won’t be permanent.

We all despise those who try to cheat

an insurance company. What about when the shoe is on the other foot?

ere are a number of common arguments that some insurance ad-justers make that are so lacking of foundation in logic, science and law that I consider them an attempt at cheating. is column is the rst in a series that will expose those arguments.

e most ridiculous has to do with the natur-al wear and tear, ‘degen-eration’ that occurs in the spine.

It is a natural process that cannot be avoided; it happens to all of us. It starts at a young age and progresses year after year. At some point, it will be-come signi cant enough that it will show up on an x-ray or other scan.

e degeneration pro-cess occurs at di erent rates for di erent people. My 45-year-old spine might have more or less degeneration than that of another 45-year-old man. Degrees of degen-eration are referred to in terms of “mild”, “moder-ate” and “severe.”

It sounds scary. Any-thing to do with our spines sounds scary. ere’s really nothing to be afraid of. It’s part of the normal, natural aging process.

How does this natural aging process form part of a baseless insurance company argument?

You’re injured in a car crash. Before the crash, you had no back or neck pain. After the crash, you do. An x-ray is taken of your spine to rule out a fracture. e x-ray shows degeneration.

“Look, there, at that degeneration in your spine. e crash didn’t cause that. Your whiplash injury should have re-solved long ago. It must be that degeneration in

your spine that’s respon-sible for your ongoing pain.”

It’s an argument that is used to convince in-jured victims to accept

far less than fair nancial compensation for their injuries and losses. Does

it have any basis? If you were to look at

the degree of degenera-

tion in my spine, would you be able to accurately predict my level of back

or neck pain?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWhat question would

you like a qualified professional to answer?

Halloween is around the corner and I’m looking to get some spooky contact lenses to liven up my costume. Are these safe?

While there certainly are versions of these contact lenses that have been approved for wear, it’s very important

to evaluate the credibility of your supplier prior to ordering. Discount or off-label sales of this style of contact lens has been linked to numerous incidents of bacterial corneal infection over the years. These cases commonly result in preventable  blindness or severe visual disability. Because these are niche products it’s sometimes hard to know what you’re getting, what the lens has been stored in and what the conditions were like during the manufacturing process. As such, I always advise consultation with your local doctor of optometry prior to purchasing or wearing what is still considered to be a medical device (even if it does have a pumpkin painted on it).

We are getting ready to list our home. Where should my focus be when thinking about rst impressions and curb appeal? As we all know, rst impressions are extremely important and can make, or break, your chance

to get a potential buyer in the front door for a look! To make your home’s rst impression a memorable one, there are a few details to attend to in order to make the curb appeal stand out while also improving your ability to sell quicker for the right price.

Stand in front of your house with a friend and take note of all things that might improve that all-important rst impression. Remember to look at the small details before looking at the bigger picture and have a realistic plan with a time-frame that will allow you to do a great job. For example, simple things like getting rid of weeds, cleaning the windows, getting pine needles and leaves off the roof and out of the gutter and a raked lawn will make your home look well kept and will brighten and accentuate the foliage that you want to be noticed. A freshly painted front door and a new welcome mat are simple ways to make your home look inviting! Finally, remember to wash your driveway and edge it for that clean, professional look. If you are getting your home ready for sale, remember to have a plan of action and to ask your Realtor for other great tips on how to get your home prepared for buyers!

Q:

A:

I've had it with over-exaggeration from people trying to sell me something. My teeth are pretty good – lasted me for 60 years without too much trouble. This young whippersnapper dentist is trying to get me to spend more than I paid for my first truck to 'fix' them now – or else. He's warning of all kinds of dire consequences. How do I know he isn't full of hot air?

There are indeed many methods to sell anything. The 'fear factor' is one that some dental professionals routinely utilize, and as you have indicated it doesn't fly very far with you! Funnily enough, I know you are not alone. Here is the major issue. Our teeth and our bodies will absorb a tremendous amount of neglect and marginal care without really complaining very much. We see patients who have gone to the same practitioner for decades, and for whatever reason that dentist has been a fan of the 'wait and see' program before he/she ever recommended anything outside the comfort zone. In the eyes of many patients, this meant that 'nothing was wrong'. If it didn't hurt (and it often doesn't) that just added more credence to the idea that additional dental work is unnecessary. A young colleague purchased a practice from an older retiring gentleman whose patients loved him.

He was, however, reluctant to do much other than fillings and checkups for the last decade of his working life. The young purchaser knew there was a ton of deferred maintenance in those charts, and assumed he could come in and just begin methodically caring for these patients without any obstacle. Guess what? They fled like he was a forest fire! In their minds, they had nothing wrong because kindly old 'Dr. Bob' never mentioned it, so this young guy just wanted to buy a new BMW. Nothing could be further from the truth. The patients needed the diagnosed work to save their teeth, but because of the retired dentist's inaction they refused to believe it. The majority of them just left the practice because they didn't trust the new guy. True story! Both parties suffered – the young dentist paid a premium for an office full of active dental charts and was punished for simply telling the truth. The patients suffered because they had a totally inaccurate estimation of the level of their current dental health. It was their choice to go elsewhere to find a 'trustworthy' dentist.

There was no 'winner'. Chances are your young dentist is just looking out for your best dental interest. Give him the benefit of the doubt. Seek a second opinion elsewhere before you toss him under the bus!

As part of its commit-ment to tackling hunger, Valley First, a division of First West Credit Union recently presented the Lake Country Food Bank with $10,000 to help support its ongoing programming.

e donation, made by Valley First president Paulette Rennie, came during Valley First’s an-nual Make a Di er-ence Days campaign—a week-long commun-ity support blitz. Rennie was at the Lake Country Seniors’ Activity Centre during a volunteer event to cook and serve a hot lunch to the residents.

“Tackling hunger is a priority for us,” said Ren-nie. “Food banks are such a vital part of our com-munity. To extend our support to Lake Coun-try enables us to help even more British Col-umbians in need and continue to make a real di erence in the ght

against hunger.” e opportunity to

support the Lake Coun-try Food Bank came from Valley First’s on-going connections with community partners and local and provincial elected o cials. Food banks are widely recog-

nized for the import-ant service they provide; a service that can only be delivered through an col-laborative approach that includes individuals, the business community and food bank advocates.

In 2010, Valley First launched the Feed the

Valley program to raise food and funds for food for the Okanagan, Sim-ilkameen and ompson valleys. e organization has helped raise more than $950,000 and col-lected more than 60,000 pounds of food in a little over ve years.

No, you wouldn’t. Sci-enti cally, the level of spinal degeneration is a very poor predictor of pain and other symp-toms.

In other words, if you took x-rays of the spines of 1,000 people, you

would not be able to pre-dict which of those 1,000 are su ering from spin-al pain by looking at the x-rays.

e irony is that in-stead of being an argu-ment for reducing an entitlement to fair compensation, spinal de-generation best supports

an argument for increas-ing it. e reason is that the greater your spinal degeneration, the more likely you are going to have long term pain aris-ing from a spinal injury.

Our civil justice sys-tem works on a premise that “you take your vic-tim as you nd him.” If

you smash your car into the back of a stopped vehicle, you (your in-surance company) is re-sponsible to compensate your victim for all of his or her losses that would not have occurred had the crash not occurred.

If your victim hap-pens to have a young,

healthy spine, and injur-ies are very small, then your insurance company is lucky, and will have to pay a small amount of compensation for that small injury. If your vic-tim happens to have an older, more degenerated spine, such that the colli-sion triggers a lifetime of

pain, then your insurance company is correspond-ingly unlucky.

Don’t let the bunk arguments of an insur-ance adjuster cheat you or those close to you out of fair compensation. Better yet, insist always on attentive driving from yourself as well as those

around you so as to pre-vent injuries from occur-ring in the rst place.

Paul Hergott is a per-sonal injury lawyer at Hergott Law in West Ke-lowna.
