Lake Mary Montessori Academy
Fall 2012
Welcome Back!
We have truly exciting news, the enrollment at LMMA is 113 students and 87 families. This is due to our high retention and wonderful new families.
The New Students are integrating beautifully into the primary classrooms. Our alumni students have matriculated into middle schools and are adjusting as independent thinkers. The ITBS scores for the second through fifth graders were at 99% and our sixth graders were 88%. The National Test affirms the academic performance of our Montessori Children.
There are new programs this year at LMMA. Arts Alive, Stephen Covey’s The Leader In Me, Keyboarding and Guitar Lessons for the Elementary Students. Also, a new Dad’s Club,
Conscious Discipline Workshops and a Green Team Committee. Keep reading your emails, we are off to an AWESOME School Year!

The Leader In Me
Page 6
Here are a few tips for learning more about The Leader In Me Curriculum that the teachers are
implementing with the Elementary children.
Read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal
Change was a groundbreaker when it was first published in 1990, and it con-
tinues to be a business bestseller with more than 10 million copies sold.
Stephen Covey, an internationally respected leadership authority, realizes
that true success encompasses a balance of personal and professional effec-
tiveness, so this book is a manual for performing better in both arenas. His
anecdotes are as frequently from family situations as from business chal-
lenges. Before you can adopt the seven habits, you'll need to accomplish
what Covey calls a "paradigm shift"--a change in perception and interpreta-
tion of how the world works. Covey takes you through this change, which af-
fects how you perceive and act regarding productivity, time management,
positive thinking, developing your "proactive muscles" (acting with initiative
rather than reacting), and much more. This isn't a quick-tips-start-tomorrow kind of book. The concepts are
sometimes intricate, and you'll want to study this book, not skim it. When you finish, you'll probably have Post-it
notes or hand-written annotations in every chapter, and you'll feel like you've taken a powerful seminar by
Covey.—Joan Price

Just for New Families
1. During the beginning of the school year, the children will learn the importance of the following
ground rules: *Choosing one work at a time.*Putting away one work before choosing an-
other.*Speaking to one another with kind words.*Using polite manners at snack and lunch.
2. Primary classes: Be on the lookout for your child’s folder. Each Tuesday, your child will bring
home his folder. Please empty the folder and return it to school the following day.
3. Tuition Payments: Monthly tuition payments are due on the first of the month. After the
10th, a $20.00 late fee will be billed to your account.
4. Extra Clothing: For the primary students, please make sure the school has a change of un-
derwear and socks for your child in case of emergency. Place in large ziplock bag with child’s
name on outside.
5. Play Dates: When your child is being picked up on a special day for a play date with another
family, please take a few moments to put your permission in writing or email. We cannot re-
lease a child with a verbal request. The staff appreciates your assistance as it enables us to
be efficient at dismissal times.
6. Emergencies: It is very important that we have updated telephone numbers of both parents
as well as friends and relatives who may be contacted in case of sickness
7. The Looking Shelf: In our classrooms, there is a very special shelf called the “Looking Shelf”
where the children can observe beautiful items from nature. This most special work changes,
and the children are shown how to look with their eyes not their hands. This type of activity
kindles the joy of observation. All year, we invite the children to bring in special items to place
on the looking shelf. Please no toys.
