T he 22nd Annual Bash for Cash was held at the Choctaw Casino

Center Stage in Durant, Okla., on August 8, 2013. This phenomenal event which included a live band, dancing, plated dinner, live and silent auctions, raffles and door prize giveaways proved to be the most outstanding in the Lake Texoma Association’s history. All involved reported having a magnificent time at a first-class event. We could not have pulled off such a fabulous event without our Bash Committee which was chaired by Karen Wooten with Buncombe Creek Marina, Cathy Frazier with Biz Source Marketing, and Rene Birchall from Grandpappy Point Resort & Marina. The Lake Texoma Association would also like to thank our Premier Sponsors, LJH Marinas / American Bank, Commodore Marine, and Indian Nation Wholesale. Many thanks to everyone who worked so hard

to make this event outstanding! Check out the 2013 Bash for Cash sponsors and photos online at www.LakeTexomaOnline.com

The most successful fundraising event in the Lake Texoma Association’s history will be surpassed by the 23rd Annual Bash for Cash. Currently scheduled for Saturday, August 9, 2014, again at the Choctaw Casino Center Stage, we expect to

have an even more sensational event. The 2014 event will have the usual silent & live auctions, as well as raffles, with unique items up for bid. We will again have the photo booth ready to roll with complimentary pictures to commemorate the event. Also, we will have an outstanding band help us rock the evening with entertainment and dance tunes.

We welcome you to join us for the party at the 23rd Annual Bash for Cash on August 9, 2014. Volunteers and sponsorship

opportunities are also available. This event helps the Lake Texoma Association fulfill its mission of promoting the Texoma region as well as protecting and preserving Lake Texoma. Call the LTA office at (580) 564-2334 or (855) 4LAKEINFO for more information.

We look forward to seeing YOU!

Texoma HISTORY

Lake Texoma has grown in importance over the decades from primarily relief from annual flooding and destruction to an employment engine for the area, and finally a recreation mecca for the nation. Mr. George Moulton, who some

consider the father of the Denison Dam, was a Denison businessman who dreamed of placing a dam

on the Red River at Baer’s Ferry as early as 1925. He began lobbying and talking to Chambers of Commerce in Denison and Durant in the late- 1920s. Sam Rayburn joined the dream team in the early 1930s and was instrumental in the legislative process of making the great lake a reality.

The Flood Control Act of 1938 (Public Law No. 761, 75th Congress, 3rd Session) authorized funding for the Denison dam, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers set up the Denison District Office in June of that year. The first Commander was Captain Lucius D. Clay.

Lake Texoma was constructed during WWII.

German prisoners of war were involved in the construction of the dam and were the first POWs to be used in a labor camp. These prisoners were from Rommel’s Afrika Korps and were housed in camps at Tishomingo and Powell, Oklahoma. Later, the Tishomingo POWs were housed in another camp at the spillway. Only non-war related work could be performed by POWs according to the Geneva Convention – such as clearing trees for the proposed lake and light construction. Construction projects performed by the prisoners included mortared stone lining of the drainage ditches around the damsite, which are still present today, and a bathroom facility at the damsite.

Construction of the dam was completed in January 1944 at a cost of $54 million. The installation of the two generators was completed in September 1949.

Lake Texoma on the Texas shore offers both breathtaking bluffs with deep water, perfect for sailboats, as well as intermittent beaches for swimming and fishing. Several marinas and various camping destinations sprawl along

the Texas shoreline. Lodging, shopping and restaurants abound within the Grayson & Cooke county areas. Make sure to check out the local Texoma cities of Denison, Pottsboro, Sherman, Whitesboro and Gordonville

on your way to your favorite Lake Texoma destination in Texas.

Initially Lake Texoma was authorized for flood control, hydropower and water supply. Recreation was not officially added as a project purpose by Congress until 1988.

The management of the lands around Lake Texoma was turned over to the National Park Service in 1946 and they continued until 1949 when both agencies decided that the NPS would move out and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would take over the operations and maintenance responsibilities. The National Park Service was always a reluctant partner in this arrangement and finally removed themselves from Texoma in 1949.

Lake Texoma has crested the spillway (640-foot elevation) a total of three times: 1957, 1990 and 2007.

Denison, TexasProud to be the birthplace of Dwight D. eisenhower, the 34th U.s. President,

Denison boasts many attractions to entice visitors.

Denison, Texas, is a thriving town with a big heart. Named as one of seven Cultural Arts Districts in the state of Texas in 2009, it is home to galleries, art

studios and performing arts venues. It has reason to be proud of its slogan “small town big art” stated Anna McKinney, president of the Denison Chamber of Commerce.Museums and attractions that you don’t want to miss

are the Dwight D. Eisenhower Birthplace & Historic Site, the Red River Railroad Museum, the Perrin Air Force Base Historical Museum, Grayson County Frontier Village, and just to the south in our sister city, Sherman, is the Harber Wildlife Museum. Denison is located 65 miles north of Dallas on US Hwy 75. An

alternate route to Denison from Dallas offers a beautiful leisurely drive by way of State Highway 289 North. From the Main Street Fall Festival in October to the fishing, golf

and softball tournaments held throughout the year, Denison offers a variety of events for visitors to enjoy. There’s live music every Friday night from late May to the end of July at Heritage Park, located in the 300 block of West Main. Just bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a relaxing evening with great entertainment for free. On July 4th there is a fireworks extravaganza you don’t want to miss! September features the high-flying fun of the U.S. National Aerobatic Championships followed in November by the Fall Art Tour and Raku Rumble, where visitors can watch pottery being fired and even purchase their favorite piece. The day after Thanksgiving through the last weekend in December, you’re

invited to experience the dazzling drive-through tour of Holiday Lights at Loy Lake Park. When planning a trip to Denison, McKinney advises to check the

local events calendar to see the many things you can enjoy. There’s an event almost every weekend throughout the year!Denison is also an outdoor paradise. It is home to nine city

parks, two city softball complexes, one special-use city plaza, one county park, a state park and one state historic site. The Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is located just west of Denison, and of course, there is spectacular Lake Texoma. Visitors can swim in the indoor 25-meter pool, go boating on 89,000-acre Lake Texoma, hike around Waterloo Lake Park, mountain bike through Eisenhower State Park, play soccer at Raynal Park, enjoy a softball game at T-Bar Fields, or play a game of disc golf at Munson Park.

We invite all to come check us out. You will be glad you did.For more information please contact us at: www.pottsborochamber.com

Pottsboro has much to offer in the way of lake recreation and dining so that

anyone who comes for an extended vacation or a weekend away will have all they need for an amazing experience. Whether it is lodging, boating, fishing, horseback riding or many other entertainment options, Pottsboro can deliver.State Highway 289 comes directly out of Dallas making a quick

getaway convenient. The North Texas Regional Airport that has hosted the National Aerobatic Championship for over 15 years, and most recently, the World Aerobatic Championship is a great amenity that makes travel into and out of Pottsboro and the surrounding area extremely convenient. In 2013 Pottsboro welcomed a brand new Brookshire’s Grocery

Store. We have a verbal commitment that a Subway restaurant will be building at the intersection of SH289 and Hwy. 120. Those types of businesses do not come to an area unless there is significant development to support them. Pottsboro anticipates other businesses and restaurants seeing the value of our resort community and developing here in the next few years.Pottsboro will benefit from a 3,100-acre master planned

development that will include high end housing, senior housing and commercial development. Construction of this development is reported to possibly begin in November of 2013. In 10 years,

it is estimated as many as 12,000 people could be living in the Preston Harbour development. So Pottsboro is not a sleepy little town with nothing going for it. It is a thriving and exciting place in which to live and do business.

T he “good life” is a wonderful way to describe the City of Whitesboro and

surrounding area. Whitesboro’s small-town atmosphere is supported by family bonds, friendships and community involvement in everything from education and preservation to beautification, community events and much more. In 1848, Ambrose B. White arrived here and established White’s Westview Inn that became a stagecoach stop along the western route for the Butterfield Overland Mail Company. Local shopping and businesses now line historical downtown, which boasts of many quaint shops. There are numerous historical markers are in the area to visit.Downtown Whitesboro has been home of the Annual

Peanut Festival since 1965. The event is held the third Saturday every October. The festival draws crowds in excess of 20,000. The community also has equine facilities, ranches and a leading horse industry. Combine these events, profiles and facts with its close proximity to Lake Texoma, Lake Ray Roberts, Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, Dallas Metroplex and the state of Oklahoma, and you have an ideal place to live and/or visit. The

Whitesboro Area Chamber of Commerce and its Board of Directors are proud to be associated with and support the city and its surrounding area, businesses and our chamber members.

Why do we LOVE

The sport of fishing is deeper than it seems. Fishing is special and it alters our lives. Whatever the reason, no matter who you are, fishing teaches us that it is a grand sport filled with excitement and wonder.

How can Lake Texoma fishing be so good?

Our lake is known as the striper capitol of the world. Texoma was stocked with striped bass in 1965. Truly a natural phenomenon occurred. Originally a saltwater species, the striped bass has been naturally sustained by Lake Texoma. The lake has proven to be the perfect habitat for these magnificent fish. Lake Texoma boasts the best natural reproduction of freshwater stripers in the United States. This means there is no need to do annual restocking. The stripers are so prolific you are allowed to catch 10 stripers per angler per day. Stripers are considered by

many fishermen to be the strongest-fighting fish in fresh water. Not to mention, stripers white flakey filets are excellent table fare.

Nothing is more memorable than catching your first fish. Something magical happens.

How many different fish species?

Lake Texoma is home for 70 other species of fish. The most popular are largemouth, spotted, white and the striped bass. You cannot omit the channel, blue and flathead catfish. Catfish may be Lake Texoma’s best-kept secret. In 2004, a fisherman caught a world-record blue catfish for a rod and reel. The monster weighed in at a whopping 121.5 pounds.

Year-round angling!Spring, summer, fall and winter are all great times to go fishing at Lake Texoma. There is not a closed season for fishing. Many fisher people can dream of their next fishing adventure year-round on this grand lady of a lake. So round up mom, dad, aunts and uncles, and don’t forget the kids. What

are you waiting for? Come to Lake Texoma and get a hook in the water. Many of the marinas that surround this lake have rods, reels, bait and boats to rent. Lake Texoma offers every kind of water entertainment and outdoor recreational activities, including: year-round fishing/boating, swimming, skiing, wakeboarding,

marinas, and camp grounds. Bird watching and hunting are other activities available. Lake Texoma has something for everyone in every season! Golfers are in luck with two excellent courses to use in Marshall County. The championship Chickasaw Pointe Golf Resort, on US 70, has a world-class layout of nearly 7,000 yards of scenic rolling hills, picturesque lake views, and super-smooth bent-grass greens. The Buncombe Creek Golf Course, located in a beautiful rural area, offers an ever-changing course to meet the levels of performance of any golfer. Marshall County is home to the National Sand Bass Festival - Madill’s “Jumpin’ Little Summer Fest”, which is held the first full week in June, and attracts 30,000 people each year from all across the United States. Held on Madill’s town square, the festival features a carnival, an arts and crafts fair, food booths and an entertainment slate. Annual events also include the King Sandie Fun Run, King Sandie Fishing Tournament, and the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. There are also terrapin races, a car show, talent search, and games and competitions for children. Free Nightly Concerts featuring local bands, gospel singing, talent search winners, and well-known Nashville Recording Artists. Marshall County supports civic and cultural interests with the Madill Art Club, and the Genealogical & Historical Society and Museum. The Madill Art Club meets monthly with artists sharing painting tips and techniques. The annual Madill Art Show, held in October in the Madill Community Center in City Park, features amateur and professional artists from Southern Oklahoma and North Texas competing for prize money and ribbons. The show features several hundred entries of original oils, watercolors, mixed media, pottery, sculpture and junior division entries. The Museum of Southern Oklahoma began preserving yesterday for Marshall County in 1975. Since then, it has continued to bring

together and assist those interested in the discovery and collection of the history and genealogy of Marshall County. Also available is specialized family and genealogical research. Marshall County is also home to two big rodeo events each year. The Madill FFA Rodeo occurs in April and is the oldest rodeo in Oklahoma. July brings the 66th Annual Madill Round Up Club Rodeo. Each showcases rodeo competitors and have earned state and national recognitions. The Reuel Little Classic is an annual 5K, 10K and a half-marathon run which honors long-time attorney and political figure Reuel W. Little and is quickly becoming one of the best organized, best attended runs in the state. The run takes place every October in Madill. Marshall County offers a variety of shopping. From specialty stores, boutiques, clothing stores, department stores, antique shops, to crafts and collectibles, there is something for everyone! Shop Marshall County held annually in November and December, encourages shoppers to shop in Marshall County. Winners receive Chamber Bucks to make additional purchases with the Shop Marshall County merchants. Marshall County is conveniently located two hours from both Dallas/Ft. Worth and Oklahoma City; and 30 miles from both Durant, Okla., to the east and Ardmore, Okla., to the west. Marshall County, “A Great Place to Visit, a Better Place to Live,” is warm, friendly and eager to welcome all visitors.

LAKE TEXOMA

Whether you enjoy bird watching, wildlife photography, fishing, biking or hiking in the great outdoors, the National Wildlife Refuges on Lake Texoma offer something for everyone year-round. The change of seasons in October brings large

groups of American white pelicans to refuge waters as they pass through on their way to wintering grounds along warm southern coasts. Franklin’s gulls can be seen in large numbers as they swoop in for a few days on their way to Central and South America. Look for the majestic bald eagle sitting in trees by the lake or on driftwood in shallow waters. By mid-November blue- and green-winged teal,

northern pintails, mallards, and northern shovelers are dabbling around in wetlands searching for seeds and insects while snow, Ross’, and white-fronted geese adorn refuge farm fields foraging on bright green blades of winter wheat. April brings the return of great egrets, little blue

herons, white-faced ibis and other long-legged wading birds who join great blue herons —a year-round resident. In May, shorebirds such as sandpipers, phalaropes,

dowitchers, and plovers scurry along the edges of Lake Texoma in search of food to quench their energy needs. Songbirds that traveled south for the winter return

Lake Texoma is home to an abundance of wildlife all year long in two large National Wildlife Refuges.

in April and May to begin their nesting cycle. Be on the lookout for painted and indigo buntings, summer and scarlet tanagers, scissor-tailed flycatchers, and a variety of sparrows and warblers. Managed wetlands along Wildlife Drive provide summer nesting habitat for pied-billed grebes, mallards, and common gallinules. In all, the National Wildlife Refuges on Lake Texoma boasts over 338 species of birds!White-tailed deer, bobcats, river otters, red and gray fox, coyotes and

raccoons are some of the 30 mammals that live on refuge lands along side 65 species of amphibians and reptiles. Regardless of the season, the weather, or which fish are biting, there is always something to see on the Lake Texoma National Wildlife Refuges. The refuges are open daily sunrise to sunset all year long, and there is no charge for admission. Stop by the Visitor Centers for maps and information.

TEXOMA STATE PARKSLake Texoma boasts two state parks, one in Oklahoma, and one in Texas. Both of these state parks are beautiful despite their vastly different landscapes. The Texas state park, known as Eisenhower State Park, is in Denison, Texas, which was the birthplace of our 34th United States President, Dwight D. Eisenhower. The terrain in Eisenhower State Park follows that, generally, of the lake on the Texas side where breathtaking bluffs overlook Lake Texoma. However, there is a sandy swimming beach at this park as well. Eisenhower offers many camping opportunities for tents and RVs alike, as well as hiking & biking trails and one of the few 4 wheeler ATV trails offered in any Texas state park. Eisenhower Yacht Club and Marina is also found within the Eisenhower State Park boundary.

In Kingston, Okla., you will find the Texoma State Park, which provides a multitude of camping opportunities for tents and RVs right on the water’s edge. This park offers several sandy beaches with gradual slopes into the water, perfect for families looking to swim and fish. Almost all of the campsites in this state park offer exceptional views of Lake Texoma. Texoma State Park also offers a paved air strip for non-commercial users. Catfish Bay Marina is located right next to Texoma State Park, and the outstanding Chickasaw Point Golf Course is across Hwy 70 from the park. While you are visiting the Texoma State Park, stop by the information center at the Lake Texoma Association and we’ll tell you all about the exciting things there are to do and see in this area.

Lake Murray #18 of 35 Lake Texoma #19 of 35

It’s no coincidence that two of Oklahoma’s most popular waterfronts are Oklahoma State Parks. Lake Texoma,

a 93,000-acre aquatic playground, is one of the nation’s hottest fishing holes for trophy stripers. Picturesque

beach campsites and a 1.8 mile hiking trail are some of the park’s many offerings, making it an idyllic retreat. Just

down the road, Lake Murray beckons with crystal clear waters, historic Tucker Tower, an 18-hole golf course,

and the newly-opened nature center. The first and largest state park in Oklahoma, Lake Murray is a recreational

mecca for nature buffs. Visit TravelOK.com/SPDeals for special offers, and plan your waterfront getaway, today.
