Aloha means Goodbye and Hello: A Summer of Change in Applied Research

The Lakeland College Applied Research group has experienced many changes this year. We welcome back Diane Harms to the role of director of applied research as we say farewell and thank you to Lorne MacGregor for his two years of leadership. Larry Bingham is retiring this June after three years as the project manager for agriculture research. We are going to miss both Larry and Lorne and their extensive experience and passion for growing applied research at Lakeland College.

Earlier this year Laurel Perrott joined the group as the crops research specialist and we look forward to seeing her grow crops research opportunities and our collaboration with industry and other academic partners. Laurel will be working directly with the Student Managed Farm – Crop Research Team, working with students to grow their capacity and understanding of commercial crop research and development. The 2016-17 academic

year will also be the first year for the Student Managed Farm – Livestock Research Team. Geoff Brown will be the faculty liaison helping students explore opportunities for the new 50 heifer beef research herd and the Livestock Research Centre.

This summer the team is pleased to welcome returning summer student Spencer Plant and new summer students Kimberly Lysyshyn and Maxi Biederstadt. Spencer is continuing to help us with energy, agriculture, and environmental sciences projects, including image processing for the unmanned aerial vehicle, while Kim and Maxi are working on various crop research projects. Thom McAleer began his BAppSc in environmental management practicum developing enhancements to the constructed wetland at the Centre for Sustainable Innovation and continuing work he began as a summer student in previous years.

Alberta Innovates Technology Development Advisor on the Lloydminster Campus

In collaboration with the Regional Business Accelerator, Lakeland College is pleased to co-host Alberta Innovates’ newest Technology Development Advisor, Kara Johnston on our Lloydminster campus. Kara started on June 13th and will be Alberta Innovates’ regional liaison, helping to grow innovative businesses and increase access to business support services. This includes local agencies like Lakeland Applied Research and the Regional Business Accelerator, and other Alberta Innovation Network partner organizations throughout Alberta. For more information about the network of business supports for entrepreneurs and innovators available in Alberta visit www.connectica.ca.

Gold Level Award of Excellence

Lakeland’s Rob Baron is one of four people in Canada to Receive a 2016 gold level Award of Excellence from Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan).

For his innovation and achievements at Lakeland, Baron was awarded the gold CICan Leadership Excellence Award during the organization’s annual conference in Québec City on May 31.

“I was extremely honoured that my colleagues chose to nominate me for this award. I have worked with some amazing teams for many departments over my career at the college,” says Rob Baron, head of Lakeland College’s renewable energy and conservation program.

CICan’s 2016 Awards of Excellence recognize best practices from institutions across the country. The Leadership Excellence Award recognizes that although the entire post-secondary institution plays a learning leadership role in the communities they serve, inevitably, one individual makes an outstanding contribution each year.

“Rob has one of the best creative minds of anyone I have had the pleasure to work with, and has truly been a leader in every sense of the word in such a broad spectrum of projects,” says Mel Mathison, former dean of Lakeland’s School of Environmental Sciences and Applied Research. “Lakeland College is a different and better college with Rob’s contributions.”
