Lakeside Country Club-Golf Course News!

from the General Manager… Dear Members,

What an exciting time 2014 is for Lakeside Country Club. As you all know we are progressing on a Golf Course Pro-jects that will take place over the next few years. These projects will improve the course and infrastructure. On the schedule for the near future is improving our Senior and ladies tee boxes. Enlarging, leveling and bringing wa-ter to grow healthy sod. Additionally we are getting bids to paint the Pro Shop and Snack Bar areas as well as lay the carpet donated to the Club by Firmin Ford. We will continue to make the necessary enhancements to main-tain and improve our club as cost effectively as possible. Please let me know if you see anything you want us to focus on.

We have several events coming up this summer and fall that I hope to see you attend. August 9th and 10th is our Member Guest Tournament. If you cannot make the tournament, contact me about joining us for the entertain-ment, food, dancing and fun the evening of August 9th. All members are welcome for a nominal charge. Also, No-vember 1st we will be putting on a Halloween Party. We will have food, music, and fun for all. Mark your calendar and I will update you on what’s planned!

We now serve our members food & beverage needs for lunch Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We also serve dinner on Wednesday nights.

Come and join us with in all the excitement and changes at The Lakeside Country Club. I personal invite you to stop by, take a tour, enjoy 18-holes, cool off in the pool or enjoy a great lunch.

We look forward to seeing you all.,

Paul

Paul Young, Lakeside General Manager

from the Superintendent…

Although we have had multiple days of 90+ degree weather several times this summer, with good preparation and sound daily maintenance practices, we expect to go into the fall in very good condition.

We plan to have our fall aerification the week of Aug. 25th. This will be our final aerification of the year and will bring back the firm playing conditions found throughout the winter and spring seasons. Firm greens, along with cooler night time temperatures, will allow us more flexibility in greens speeds as well as providing increased re-sistance to ball marks.

After recognizing the long term forecast for the next several weeks included more rain, we decided to take ad-vantage by aerifying the rough and spraying a couple products to increase the moisture retention of the Bermuda grass. By the time you read this newsletter we expect the Bermuda grass to have made substantial improvements in quality over the very dry conditions found in June/July.

It has been fantastic to see so many new faces on the course this year. If you have any questions or comments feel free to flag me down on the course. If you have any complaints, I would be happy to address those as well.

Lakeside Country Club-Golf Course News!

from the General Manager…

Dear Members,

It is hard to believe it is now my third 4th of July as your Lakeside General Manager. It seems like every month Shaye and I speak of how fast the months and years are going by. My staff and I love the 4th of July because we get to show you, our employers how much we appreciate you, our jobs and our friends here at Lakeside. We have an amazing staff at Lakeside now and I am very lucky to be able to work with them. Please let me know if we can do anything better here to serve you and your guests. All of our staff wants to provide each and every one of you with an enjoyable experience every time you come.

Make sure you come join us this 4th of July. We will be providing all of our members a BBQ lunch, baked beans, chips and a drink from 11:30am until 1:00pm. (Guests $5.00) Our 9 hole Golf Shootout starts at 9:00am with free golf but with a $10.00 entry fee, winner take all. Then starting at 1:15pm is our Free 9 hole, 3 par four man team tournament. Please sign up in the pro shop.

We look forward to seeing you all join us Friday the 4th!

Paul

Paul Young, Lakeside General Manager

from the Superintendant…

Summer time in the South is officially here. 90 degrees by lunch with a 40% chance of afternoon showers in now

the norm. This is the month all of our Spring preparation pays off. We have continued to improve in many as-

pects of the golf course so far this season and will continue to push ourselves through to summer in order reach

our goals.

The greens are in the ideal condition to survive the heat of the next six weeks and we fully expect them to contin-

ue to be in great condition. As the greens become softer over the next few weeks will be forced to raise our mow-

ing height. As a result the greens speed will go down slightly until we aerify again in late Aug/early Sept.

We have received only 1.4” of rainfall this past month, compared to 4.2” this month last year. As a result the Ber-

muda grass is growing significantly slower. Although it not be as aesthetically pleasing as last season, the playing

conditions are far superior for the average golfer. You should find your tee shots traveling much farther and your

lies in the rough much more playable.

In addition to maintaining the greens, fairways, and rough in the best condition possible, our goals this month are

to improve upon our weed control around the course and continue to repair irrigation as time permits. As always,

we thank you for your support and encouragement!

Lakeside Country Club-Golf Course News! from the General Manager…

Dear Members,

The board has had to make a very tough decision after 2 years of deliberation on whether to provide lifeguards at our pool any longer. The trend over the past 20 years at many clubs has been to have it’s members swim at their own risk. Due to the rising costs of chemicals, utilities and personnel the decision was made to follow our peers and save on our overhead by not having lifeguards. New policies have been put in place to provide our members with a safe and pleasurable pool experience. 1. An adult must be present at all times for any child under the age of 14. 2. All members must sign in at the Pro Shop Snack Bar before entering the pool area. We must have a signed

waiver and release form on file for all adult members and Guests. 3. We now have extended pool hours from 8:00am until 7:00pm weather permitting. 4. Our cart personnel and pro shop staff will be checking the pool hourly for safety and policy issues. 5. Guests fees are still $5.00 per guest. Please let our staff know if you see any problems or have any suggestions on how we can make your pool experience better. Paul Young, Lakeside General Manager

Experts Explain:

Bunker Rake Placement By USGA Green Section.

The USGA recommends placing rakes outside

the bunker and parallel to the line of play, pref-

erably along the outer edge of the bunker so

that it will reduce the overall chance of it com-

ing into play while eliminating its influence of a

ball within a hazard. This is the protocol used

for all USGA Championships.

In all situations, select a low side (or sides if

multiple rakes are needed for a large bunker)

for placing bunker rakes. Climbing in and out of

the high sides of bunkers causes major dam-

age to the bunker face and the surrounding

sod, so encourage players to enter and exit in

low areas by placing rakes in these locations.

Please rake your traps when you exit them

and place the rake properly. Lakeside CC

Lakeside Country Club-Golf Course News! from the General Manager…

Dear Members,

I want to thank the Lakeside Men’s Golf Association for sponsoring and all their help in the Spring Match Play

Tournament. Especially Thomas Addison for taking the reigns and spending the hours with me setting it up.

We had a full course with 72 golfers and a few on standby. The tournament included 3 nine hole rounds on Satur-

day and 2 nine hole rounds on Sunday. The scoring was 1 point for a win per hole and –1 point for a loss.

Tournament Results:

2nd Place-Everett Robbins/Chip Howe Score: 3 2nd Place-Bobby Smith/A.J. Bragg Score 7

Overall Champions with a sudden death playoff between flights were Tommy Pinson and Bob Smith. Our Super Seniors took it to the youngsters.

We hope to see you all out for the Member/Member tournament on May 17th & 18th!

Newsletter- May 2014

The golf season is now pushing full steam ahead! The course is in its best condition yet and we are excited about the upcoming summer.

All Bermuda grass turf is now being mowed on a regular basis and the turf will begin growing thicker by the week. In order to combat the difficulty of maintaining the rough last year, we have converted a fairway mower into a rough mower. This will allow the rough to be mowed faster, with a lower height of cut, and with a higher quality of cut. We will also be tweaking, not to be confused with twerking, our fertilizing program in order to slow the growth of the Bermuda grass. All the Bermuda grass rough is expected to be completely under control by its’ peak growth period in August.

We have had a long list of irrigation issues this Spring including cracked heads, cracked pipes, clogged valves and, replacing solenoids. Repair and troubleshooting irrigation can be a daunting task. We have made steady progress and continue to be optimistic that the end is in sight. Because of the nature of our system you may find wet areas in your line of play or irrigation heads that are operating unbeknownst to our staff. Making these repairs has be-come the top priority in order to maintain the best quality bentgrass greens possible. Thank you all for being ex-tremely patient as we continue to resolve these issues one at a time.

As always we would like to thank you all for your support and we look forward to seeing you on the course.

J.R. Hawkins, Superintendent

Lakeside Country Club-Golf Course News! from the General Manager…

Dear Members,

(You should have already received this in the mail, but just in case I am including it in this months newsletter.)

The Lakeside Country Club Board of Directors has made some hard decisions over the past few years to help guide our club through these hard economic times. We have made many substantial improvements while at the same time being fiscally responsible by reducing expenses everywhere possible.

Unfortunately due to a number of circumstances beyond our control, the board has voted on and approved effec-tive April 1st, 2014 a member assessment in the amount of $250.00 for Full Members and a $125.00 for Social Members, due April 1st. This can be paid as a lump sum or divided over the next 9 months. This will equal to $27.78 per month for Full Memberships and $13.89 for Social Memberships from April 1st to December 1st, 2014.

It has been over 15 years since the last Lakeside Country Club assessment, and we have tried to look at all of our options to make it equitable to all members. This assessment is necessary for a number of reasons. We have found it to be the best solution to keep our club from falling into financial difficulty in the very near future. As you well know 2013 was record year for rain and bad weather in Laurens. We had an additional 88 days of lost play and in-come due to the weather compared to 2012.

This was a very difficult decision to make, but necessary to make sure Lakeside will not only survive these difficult economic times but come out with a club that is strong and an asset to our membership and our community.

Please contact me or a board member if you have any questions or concerns,

Thank you,

Paul Young, Lakeside General Manager

Course News - April 2014

Although the fast changing weather conditions during aerification week created a high degree of uncertainty, the hard work, perseverance and dedication of our maintenance crew made our March greens aerification a resound-ing success. We replaced a substantial about of organic matter with sand and fully expect the greens, once healed, to be in outstanding condition throughout the remainder of the Spring season.

Our pre-emergent herbicide application has also been completed just in the nick of time. Crabgrass, the biggest weed concern in the upstate, begins to germinate when soil temperatures reach 52 degrees F. This temperature closely coincides with the blooming of the Forsythia plant, which is often used as an indicator as to when to apply pre-emergent to turf.

Our major goals this month include:

Balance nutrients in the greens according to soil test results

Finalize Bermuda mowing equipment maintenance and preparation

Expand and level tee boxes on highest priority holes

Yes, after much diplomatic pressure from the masses, it is officially in writing. We will begin leveling tee boxes this month. Our resident construction team consisting of Equipment Operation Specialists, Kenny and Jose, and Pro-ject Supervisor Finney, are excited to tackle the reconstruction of #13 senior tees. The teeing area will be expand-ed in order to minimize wear patterns. The tee will also be constructed on an even 3% grade from front to back and capped with 8-10” of sand. This will allow for proper drainage and a perfect lie from which to snap hook your tee shot. After completion of this project, we will continue to other tees as time permits.

Thank you all for your support and we look forward to seeing you on the course.

J.R. Hawkins, Superintendent
