IB COORDINATOR NOTES
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a fun and restful summer and are
ready for another great year! Welcome to our new IB Prep 9th graders
and welcome back to our sophomores. IB juniors are beginning to settle
in with their IB curriculum and our seniors are getting ready for one of
their busiest semesters. We had a wonderful IB Senior on Friday,
August 23rd to kick off their year.
We are adding a new feature to our newsletter this year: Q & A with the IB Coordinator.
This is an opportunity for me to answer commonly asked questions. If you have a
questions you would like me to answer in the newsletter, you can email me directly at
[email protected] or submit your questions to [email protected].
Question: Can my student participate in sports or other activities and still be successful in
IB?
Answer: Of course! Many, if not most of our IB prep and IB students are involved in
activities both in and out of school. Research shows that students who participate in
activities at school (clubs, sports etc…) feel more connected to the school community, do
well in their academics and have an overall more positive high school experience. We
want that for all LHS Tigers. The IB philosophy supports this as well, as evidence through
CAS-Creativity, Activity and Service. IB encourages students to be well rounded and have
a variety of experiences, not just in the classroom. LHS has over 50 clubs and activities as
well as a strong sports program that offers something for everyone. We want our IB
students to enjoy these experiences and believe it makes them better students and citizens.
Question: When should my student begin preparing for CAS?
Answer: CAS is Creativity, Activity and Service. Students must complete CAS in order
to earn the IB Diploma. We encourage all LHS students to participate in activities both in
and out of school. It is good for them (see above answer). This encouragement is all our
IB Prep 9th graders need. They may not realize it, but participation in these activities is
preparing them for CAS. Our IB Prep sophomores who plan to continue in IB complete a
CAS questionnaire at the end of 10th grade that outlines CAS requirements and asks them
to list activities in which they currently participate. Most of them are doing CAS activities,
so they are ready to move into Jr. year and begin their CAS portfolios. In their Jr. year, IB
students receive a CAS handbook that outlines CAS requirements and gives direction on
how to complete their CAS portfolio, which the submit at the end of their senior year.
While CAS does not formally begin until the beginning of the Jr. year, it is never too early
to begin preparing. All students have to do is get involved with clubs and activities…..that
is CAS preparation.
Best Regards~
Joellen Kramer

FROM THE CHAIR
Hello IB and IB Prep Families! What a great start to the 2019-
2020 school year! Welcome back to all IB prep sophomores, and
IB juniors and seniors. A special welcome to our class of 2023
freshman! IB families – you are in the right place!
As said before, the Lakewood High School IB program
guarantees to enrich our students’ high school experience and
provide opportunities for growth that will shape their lives. The same is true for
Lakewood’s outstanding and genuine staff, under the leadership of Principal Bock.
We are fortunate to have them.
And, speaking of fortunate, this year’s LHS – IBPA board and committee chairs
comprise a strong roster. We have new and returning members, all with a plethora
of experience and a dedication to support our IB families. Thank you for sharing
your time and talents!
Over the summer, we met to plan for the school year and to continue the
conversation around ways to provide opportunities for our IB families. Feedback
from last year’s survey indicated interest in getting together to meet each other,
socialize, and have some fun. The 2019 LHS Chalk Festival/Food raiser to benefit
the LHS Tiger Pantry on Friday, September 13th was our first event – what a great
time! Read on for details. We are pleased to offer several more events through
the course of the year, including:
• Saturday, October 12, 2019 – Nature hike/picnic at Red Rocks Park
• Friday, January 10, 2020 – Chili Cookoff at LHS
• Saturday, January 11, 2020 – Ice Skating at Belmar
• Mid-April 2020 – IBPA at the LHS Film Festival
We will also continue to bring you informative meetings and presentations on
topics germane to the IB program. These include, Stress Management
(November), LHS IB Graduate College Experiences, “Grads Tell All” (January),
Extended Essay Preparation (February), and College Selection Strategies (March).
A big thank you to our student/parent panel for our September general meeting on
the “Five Best Practices for IB”!
Additionally, we’ll show our appreciation to our LHS staff via four staff
appreciation luncheons and continue our support of all LHS students through after-
hours library staffing and providing exam proctors for IB/AP testing.
Finally, the IB Senior Banquet and scholarship awards in May 2020 will honor our
Class of 2020 LHS IB program graduates.
The LHS-IBPA is dedicated to empowering students, supporting faculty and
promoting academic excellence. We rely on annual membership dues ($20),
fundraising efforts, and the work of our valuable volunteers. Our membership
goal is 100% of IB and IB prep families. For information and to join, please click

BREAKING NEWS!
Eight LHS Seniors Selected as Semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program
Seven are IB Students*!

Semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit® Scholarship Program
(Evanston, Illinois) Today officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of
approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented
high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth
more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists
must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. Over 90 percent of the Semifinalists
are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the
Merit Scholar® title.
NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to
conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and
by approximately 400 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the
nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.
Over 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the
2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen
of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors,
includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s
percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which
they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities,
demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding
academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn
SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.
From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and in February
they will be notified of this designation. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of
Finalists. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in
rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.
Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2020. Every Finalist will compete for one of
2,500 National Merit® $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-
sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 220 corporations and business organizations for
Finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where
sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, about 180 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,100
college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.
National Merit Scholarship winners of 2020 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and
concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 345,000 other distinguished young people who have
earned the Merit Scholar title.

LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Our LHS-IBPA coordinates the “Library After Hours” program, which allows LHS to keep the library open for ALL
students from 3:15 to 5:00 pm, Monday through Thursday, throughout the school year. This program provides a safe
place for students to go after school until they can catch a ride home, if they have no computer access at home and need to
use a computer, or if they just need a quiet place to study. One parent volunteer staffs the library each day. The volunteer
simply provides an adult presence in the library and can easily read or do other work during the shift. Volunteers can sign
up for whatever days work for them; some volunteers work only two or three shifts during the entire school year, and
some like to volunteer as often as once or twice a month. Volunteering in the library is a wonderful way to get a glimpse
into high school life. Please consider volunteering in the Library After Hours program!
If you would like more information or would like to volunteer, please contact:
