Good evening and a very warm welcome to the Officials, players and supporters of Eastbourne Borough

. Welcome also to you our supporters. We hope you enjoy your evening and have a safe journey home. You will find no reference to Saturday’s FA Trophy second leg in this issue for the very simple reason that this programme is off to print two days before it is played.Tonight we get back to league action at what is very much the business end of the season. We have 10 games remaining equally split between here at Grosvenor Vale and on the road to push for a play off place. It will not be easy but it is

certainly possible. Bobby and his team have steadily built a team of their own since joining back in August and although there have been hiccups there have also been glimpses of just how good we are when it all clicks. Let’s continue to encourage and support as one and end the season on a high.. Thanks as always to our sponsors today, We are always grateful for the generosity of our supporters when it comes to match and ball sponsorship as these play a big part in our financial stability. Enjoy the game Mark

SUPPORTERS CLUB ADAM EDWARDS

Good afternoon one and all and welcome to The Vale for game versus

Eastbourne Borough. We trust every fan has a pleasant stay here with us in the heart of Middlesex and also has time to share a drink with the supporters in the clubhouse after the game.

Its that time of year when we start thinking and planning the new stock for next season. In seasons past it has certainly been a less hectic time of the year than the early months of a campaign. Not this season. Throw in a trophy run, colder / snowier weather earlier than normal and our best laid plans go out the window. Hats and scarves sell out quicker, stock levels we have run down need to be replenished and enquiries via the website go through the roof. Big games and the potential Wembley date has meant we have had to get things in place, so the Megastore does not completely take over my life and push Mrs Megastore closer to pressing the divorce button. First on my recent hit list was a trip to Wembley for the annual Merchandise fair. This year I took Grandad Megastore who seemed to talk to everyone, hence why I am now being bombarded with enquiries from all sorts of suppliers from the usual winter wear companies from Portugal to tea trays from Sweden, carrier bag companies from Germany and bottle openers from Poland. Amongst the bags of goodies my Dad came away with there are certainly some there that will feature next season, if not sooner.

NEW TO THE MEGASTORE Hopefully by the time these notes go to print we should be in possession of some new Stones Beanie hats (complete with bobble to appease those that have been nagging me for months), as well as some more Wealdstone blue and white bar scarves complete with embroidered badge at each end. To be honest they can not arrive soon enough as we have completely sold out of hats and scarves much earlier in the year than normal. The famous changing UK climate is to blame for that. The hats are a very reasonable £10 and the scarves £12 each.

SOCIAL MEGASTORE The Megastore is now on Facebook (Wealdstone FC SC MegaStore) & Instagram (WfcMegastore) & Youtube (WFCSCMegastore). With the help of Steve Foster these sites have been updated and will contain latest news and links to all things Megastore.

PAYMENT Please remember we can process card payments in the Megastore on game days via a handy PayPal card machine, so not only can you spend more in the Megastore, but you can also retain your cash to buy pints, programmes or golden goals.

WANTED UNWANTED We are always on the lookout for your unwanted items. A number of individuals have already kindly donated their unwanted DVDs, LPs, pictures, books, CDs and the like. There is nothing we will not try and sell via our various outlets. The amount of money we raise

through donated items is quite ridiculous. So if your other half is urging you part with some of you clutter please bear us in mind and we can put it to good use.

GOLDEN GIRL Mim will be selling Golden Goals just inside the ground for your chance to scoop an extra £50 for the first goal scored or £10 for the last goal. If you are lucky enough to win pop into the Megastore at the end of the game to collect your prize from Mim.

THANK YOU TO the number of you out there that have kept us busy selling you amazing donations. There are some amongst you that have been turning up week after week with programmes and other such treasures. Some of these are like giving us £5 notes each time, as they quickly go on to Ebay and quickly raise us cash. Every item we receive is very much appreciated and helps us make a big dent in our fundraising targets, so thank you.

GOODBYE & GOODNIGHT That brings to an end my 16th set of programme notes. Remember the shop will be open all home games and some away games. Come on you Stones and don’t forget to bring your wallets.

Two days ago our ‘Fan in the Stand’ was Chris Lane, and tonight it’s his brother

Matthew. Why have one Lane when you can have two? Or even a cul-de-sac? So fire away Matt...Whereabouts do you live? Northolt. Have lived there my whole life. Are you working (and where?) I work as a content writer for a digital market-ing agency in Beckenham. Mostly revolves around property and finance, but I manage to get the odd football-related blog in there by hook or crook.First Stones game attended? First went as a baby (in the Vicarage Road years) but the first games I actually remember were at Edgware, where I was more interested in playing football be-hind the main stand than actually watching the football for the most part. I have a vague memory of a few games at Yeading, but it’s very hazy. The first team I really remember included players like Chris Walton, Roy Marshall, Ian Waugh, Darren Bonfield, Paul McKay, Dominic Sterling and Brian Jones. What or who persuaded you to become a Stones fan? My dad Andrew has been a fan since the 1970s and took me along as a baby. I’ve been going to games ever since.Do you follow any other team? I’m a big Spurs fan, and go to a few games a year. But I mostly prefer watching non-league football, where you feel like less of a number.Do you prefer lower-League football? I like the ability to stand where you want and swap ends at half-time. I also enjoy going to various away grounds – some better than others – and being so close to the action. It does feel like a more ‘real’ match-day experience, but I like visiting

My claim to fameis playing in the sameschool team as Kieron Forbes... yes it’s true, he learnt it all from me!

HALF AND HALF HAT Above, Matthew shows his leanings with a rather original Spurs and Stones hat. Left, his brother’s ‘Fan in Stand’ last Saturday looked eerily similar. Same schools but playing with different stars of the Wealdstone team!

the most memorable

individual moments.

Have you ever played the game yourself? I played Sunday League football from 7-18 and then played throughout my three years at uni. I now play 5-a-side infrequently at work, as well as the odd charity game for my former Sunday League side. Favourite current Wealdstone line-up? North; Ogle, Oshodi, Gayle, Okimo; Iffy Allen, Cox, Wellard, Green; Fitchett, PrattFavourite all-time Stones line-up? North – superbly agile goal-keeper and a very loyal servant to the club; Marvin McCoy – solid, pacy and good going forward; Tom Hamblin – a strong, old-fash-ioned centre half who was rarely beaten; Alan Massey – good on the ball, strong in the challenge and an excellent organiser; Okimo/Sterling – both excellent defenders but also able to offer plenty going the other way; Martin Carter – classy midfielder who suffered badly with injuries; Gary McKeown – controlled the game brilliantly; Glenn Little – best player I’ve seen in a Stones shirt; Ryan Ashe – just inches out Tom Pett for his ability to arrive late in the box and score crucial goals; Jolly – goal machine; Beckford – streets ahead of everyone else in that season where he scored

about 30 goals by February!Honourable mentions to Marvin Morgan (first spell), Chris O’Leary, Kieron Forbes, Alex Dyer and Abo Eisa.Who’s your favourite all-time Wealdstone player? Richard Jolly - the ultimate fox in the box goal poacher. Glenn Little, Gary McKeown and Ryan Ashe would also be up there. What are your expectations for the Stones for this season?A mid-table finish, not far off the play-off places. And a Trophy semi-final.How does the current programme compare with others you see? It’s the best at this level by far. It’s up there with what you get at Premier League grounds, too. Any articles or features that you’d like to see? I enjoy the ‘Where are they now?’ features. What do you think of the Stones online presence? It’s very good, with Twitter and Stones Goals Live proving very useful when you can’t get to games. What’s your Wealdstone claim to fame? I went to school with Kieron Forbes and played in the same school team as him for a number of years. One year we made it to the final of the County Cup, which was held at Brentford FC’s Griffin Park. I was sat on the bench for 118 minutes of the 120 minutes played, but finally

got on for my two minutes of fame on a pro club’s pitch. I seem to remember Kieron getting sent off in extra time in that game!I also went to the same primary and secondary school as our current left back and captain, Jerome Okimo, although he was a couple of years older and in my brother’s year. And finally....Where do you think the club will be in five years?Mid-table in the National League, hopefully with the lease situation sorted for the foreseeable future.

world-class stadiums and watching world-class footballers as well.Any disadvantages? Sometimes the quality of football can be ques-tionable – not so much nowadays, but when we were in the lower leagues it could often be the case. Also, some of the pitches at this level can still leave a lot to be desired. How do you fit watching foot-ball, and Wealdstone, into your family/working life? Fairly easily. I go to most home games with my dad and brother and we get to a fair number of away matches, too. In recent years we’ve combined away games – which, in the NLS, has meant further travelling dis-tances – with a pub lunch, which helps to make it more of a day out. Most memorable game/s you’ve EVER seen? England v Portu-gal, quarter final of Euro 2004. A brilliant, tense, topsy-turvy kind of game. The end result was crush-ing, but it was a great experience to see England in such a huge game at a relatively young age. We also happened to be stood just in front of Martin Carter – still a Stones player at the time. A few other Stones fans were in atten-dance that night as well. The endless honking of horns from the victorious Portuguese fans for the rest of the night was less memorable. And most memorable Wealdstone game, and moment? There are a few contend-ers – Dulwich in 2004, Cambridge in 2012, Northwood in 1997 and Margate in 2014 – but it has to be Southport last year for the all-round experi-ence and joy of the day. I’ve also never heard the Wealdstone fans make as much noise as they did after Wellard’s stunner. Glenn Little’s mercurial goal against Dulwich and Scott Fitzger-ald’s halfway line strike against Potters Bar were

seem to have some players well into their 30s and a few past their sell-by date, although Sergio Torres seems as good now as he was when he starred for Crawley v Man Utd a few years ago in the FA Cup.

“He commands the midfield and combines well with Gavin McCallum. James Haran is another new face doing well. Overall our squad is nearly there . We are bringing in players from lower leagues who our being taught the game by our more senior players but promo-tion seems to be a bit of a way off for us to be honest.

“This is our second season playing our home matches on the plastic pitch and personally I’m not a fan . While it generates valuable income, here at Priory Lane we have two extra pitches outside the main stadi-um which could have been replaced as 4G rather than dig up one of the best grass pitches in the league.”

There is no doubt that plastic v grass is one of the most divisive topics in football, and one that is - in my opinion - impossible to umpire. Traditionalists are trumped when the weather is bad, but there is no question that a good grass pitch will always win the argument. Good or bad luck, though, occurs on either surface! TIM PARKS

For tonight’s programme we’ve again asked Eastbourne Borough fan Paul Buckwell for his thoughts on the ‘Boro Bogeyman’.

Even before we met the Sussex side last November it was clear that Eastbourne have some sort of jinx over the Stones. In our first season in the National League South, we were held 1-1 by Boro in our opening game... and then a controversial headed equaliser by Nat Pinney in the return in January 2015 (when the ball clearly entered the goal through the sidenet-ting) denied the Stones victory again.

In 2015-16 we were beaten 1-0 at home in August with Jonathan North sent off early on (Matt Ball going in goal and only being beaten in the final few minutes) and were well beaten 3-0 in the return. Before last season’s meeting here at the Vale, Paul fessed up in the programme to being behind the goal for that ‘Fake Goal’ at Priory Lane and admitted he was amazed that it had been allowed, but said that ‘luck tends to even itself out in football’. But not when we play Eastbourne it doesn’t!

What happened in that November 2016 game? Yes, Elliot Benyon was sent off for an early challenge for a loose ball on the keeper that only the referee thought was dangerous. The card was later rescinded... but too late for the Stones who ended up well beaten 4-1.

And in the return, Gordon Bartlett saw his side’s excellent late-season run ended on East-bourne’s new plastic surface by an emphatic 5-1 scoreline. Despite having the majority of both games, we finished 9-2 losers on aggregate!

And this season? Bobby Wilkinson had just taken over as manager when the sides met at the end of August and his reshuffled side were good value for a 1-1 draw. Again, we left feeling that it was points dropped. Perhaps our luck will change tonight after the exertions of our FA Trophy adventure...

Paul reckons the game could go either way. “Looking back on the 1-1 draw from last August our team has changed dramatical-

ly” he says. “Our manager Tommy Widdrington moved on to bigger things and in came Jaime Howell, who last season led his then team Bognor Regis Town to promotion to Conference South. This season has been a tough one for us with four red cards in three games earlier in the season. We’ve got a new goalkeeper in Mark Smith (ex Aldershot) while Léon Redwood, Nat Pinney, Gary Charman, Ryan Worral, Josh Street and Charlie Horlock have all moved on. While I believe our squad is quite good we

Even Boro fans admitthey’ve been lucky... but will things change for the better tonight?

NON LEAGUE PAPER COLUMN - DAVID RICHARDSON WITHOUT doubt, one of our most important National Game Awards, year on year, is the SCL Unsung Hero. That’s because we know – guaranteed – that whoever is honoured at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday May 16 will have a genuine love and passion for the game. These are not awards for your one-season wonders! The Unsung Hero really does separate the men from the boys and the women from the girls. The process for this NGA is quite straightforward. Unlike most, it’s not a straight vote – we want you to nominate the person in the Non-League game who you believe we cannot ignore, and who deserves a special day out. That person with decades of service behind them, maybe someone who has run your club’s busy tea hut singlehandedly for years without missing a game or the manager who washes the kit, puts out the corner flags, fills out all the forms – and then picks the team! To dedicate a large chunk of your life to a club is something that definitely deserves recognition, which is why 93-year-old Albert Lant was named the SCL Unsung Hero last year. Albert took Concord Rangers into competitive football for the first time in 1967 and managed them in their formative years, helping lay the foundations for their future success. A move to Saturday football soon followed with Albert overseeing the promotions to the Essex Senior League as chairman. Lant retired from the position in 1991 and became club president, a post he still holds to this day with Rangers now an established National League South side. Concord chairman Ant Smith was on hand to pick up the award on Albert’s behalf and says every club needs a character like Lant. “Albert was the founder of Concord Rangers 50 years ago last year, so I thought it was about time to put him up for the award after all the years of service,” he said. “He’s been very hands-on over the years. I remember him being at the club and fixing doors and doing everything at the club.“That’s exactly what a Non-League club needs; people to help out every week, you need it kept tidy, the pitch needs to be done and there are other duties with turnstiles – he embodies what every club needs.”We need you to send in your nominations for your Unsung Hero! Please email your nominations to [email protected]

Founded as Langney Football Club in 1965, the Club initially joined the

Eastbourne & District Football League, with a change of name from Football Club to Sports Club when the club affiliated to the Langney Community Association in 1958. The team played on local recreation grounds before moving to Prince’s Park, near the Eastbourne sea-front. At the end of season 1973/74 the club won promotion to the Premier Division of the Eastbourne & Hastings League and with it elevation to Intermediate status, becoming the most progressive club in the Eastbourne area.

SUSSEX COUNTY LEAGUE.

In 1983 the club was elected as a founder member of Division 3 of the Sussex County League winning the championship, the Division 3 League Cup & the Eastbourne Challenge Cup in 1986/87, with promotion to Senior status.

A year later there was further promotion as champions of Division 2. Langney Sports rarely finished outside the top four in Division 1 and in 1992 reached the final of the Sussex Senior Cup, losing 0-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion at the Goldstone Ground.

The 1999/00 season under management duo Garry Wilson and Nick Greenwood, saw Sports take the Sussex County League title, gaining promotion to the Dr. Martens League (Eastern Division) where after a season of consolidation at the higher level, the Club finished a creditable ninth in the table.

CLIMBING THE PYRAMID.

During 2000/01 the club receive a £117,000 grant from the Football Foundation to go towards further development of Priory Lane. At the end of the season the Football Committee made one of the most crucial decisions in the club’s history: the change of name to Eastbourne Borough

FC. 2002 saw the club win the Sussex Senior Cup for the first time, beating the holders Lewes 2-1.

Within two seasons there was further promotion to the Dr Martens Premier Division. Borough failed to retain the

Sussex Senior Cup, losing in a penalty shoot-out to Crawley Town after the game had finished goal-less after extra time.

Within another year Borough were elevated to the newly inaugurated Conference South.

CONFERENCE FOOTBALL COMES TO EASTBOURNE.

2004/05 proved to be a most successful season as Eastbourne Borough reached the Play-Off Final. Over 1,000 Borough supporters made the 500 mile round trip to Stoke City for the North v South Final against Altrincham, but it wasn’t to be, losing 2-1 in an exciting encounter.

The following campaign was disappointing, but the Club achieved another milestone reaching the 1st Round proper of the FA Cup for the first time, with the reward of a home tie against League Two club Oxford United. Cheered on by a record crowd of 3,770, Borough dramatically forced a losing 3-0, at the Kassam Stadium.

The 2006/07 season saw the squad adopt a change in direction with Garry Wilson placing an emphasis on “quality’ not “quantity’. and finished in 7th place, 4 points off a play-off berth.

Buoyed by the previous league season the club started the 2007/2008 season in high spirits and it was to prove a most successful campaign with Eastbourne Borough beating Hampton & Richmond Borough 2-0 in the Play-Off Final at Stevenage. This completed a

remarkable rise from recreation ground football to the pinnacle of non-league, the Conference Premier.

THE PINNACLE OF NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

The 2008/2009 season was another step into the unknown for the club, with the opening Premier fixture a home game with Rushden & Diamonds. Any doubts re: competitiveness of the squad, infrastructure of the club, the approach to only segregate when deemed appropriate, or the support of the Eastbourne public were dispelled by the end of the day. Notable results during the season included a double over Forest Green Rovers, a home win over ex-league club York City, success over Wrexham and an incredible 4-0 win at Woking. The season proved to be most rewarding with an impressive mid-table finish, amongst the ‘giants’ of the non-league game.

2009/10 was a tough season after a bright start, AFC Wimbledon and eventual

FA Trophy winners Barrow were defeated at Priory Lane. However, a drop in form meant supporters would wait three and a half months for a league victory.

The signs were not good as relegation threatened and Oxford United provided the opposition for the final game of the campaign. With 6 minutes to go and the scores level at 0-0 Eastbourne Borough, and results going against them elsewhere, Borough appeared to be heading for the drop. Then a final minute penalty, coolly converted by Simon Weatherstone, sparked wild scenes and another season in the Premier was secured.

RELEGATION COMES TO PRIORY LANE - 2010/2011

The Sports’ 3rd season at National Conference level finally proved too much for the side and the club. Suffered its first ever relegation after a season ravaged by long term injuries to key players. After three seasons at Non-League’s highest level,

There was much optimism

for the 2011/2012 season. The recruitment over the close season looked positive. However after a bright, start the season became a struggle after a shock FA Cup defeat to East Thurrock United in October, and after only one league win in 12 outings the club parted company with Garry Wilson and Nick Greenwood. The decision for the club was difficult and painful. The decade (plus) of their tenure had seen unprecedented success but the decision was made and Tommy Widdrington took the reins with a remit to stave off relegation and this was achieved with a game to spare.

NEW START

Tommy Widdrington remained at the club for five seasons during which time a superb all weather 3G pitch was installed at Priory Lane. Widdrington moved on towards the end of last season with the club secure in mid-table. Jamie Howell was appointed manager in the close season and the Sports have high hopes of a return to the National Division in the coming seasons.
