FROM THE EDITOR...Good afternoon and welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead as we welcome Wealdstone in another big game for the club.

In the midst of one of the wettest starts to a New Year in a long time, it has been quite a stop-start period of time for football, and our last home game here remains that excellent 4-1 win over Maidstone. Despite three away defeats since then, it mustn’t be forgotten that the run of form since mid-November remains excellent and, having finally climbed out of the bottom four, it will take an even bigger effort to stay out - starting today.

The twice postponed trip to Margate is to take place this coming Tuesday night, before we’re back in action here next Saturday against Kingstonian - another side flying high in the hunt for promotion. Here’s to another cracking game this afternoon, three more points and to see you all again next weekend.

BEST OF THE REST...

03The Mead v Wealdstone

Page 4: Thamesmead Town v Wealdstone

Good afternoon and welcome to Bayliss Avenue for today’s Ryman League Premier Division game against Wealdstone FC.

Firstly, may I take this opportunity in welcoming Gordon Bartlett and his Wealdstone team to Bayliss Avenue this afternoon. I hope that you enjoy your short stay with us and that you have a safe journey home afterwards.

It seems an age since we last played a home game here at Bayliss Avenue, which was that emphatic 4-1 victory over high-flying Maidstone United.

We can’t even say that that has been as a result of the weather as the Enfield game here is the only game we’ve had called off all season.

We have, however, had three tough away games and also been able to have a couple of friendly games on the 3G pitch that we’ve got here at Sporting Club Thamesmead.

Unfortunately we have lost all three of those away games but, as has been the case for the past few months, even when results aren’t panning out for us the performances we’ve been putting in have been really encouraging.

The first of those three defeats saw us lose 2-1 away at Wingate & Finchley

and, to be honest, it was probably the worst of those three performances. In all fairness, I still think that we ought to have won the game.

We had enough chances to take the lead before the really awful weather started to come down on us during the game - I don’t think that any of us have ever experienced conditions like that before!

The hailstones were the size of golf balls and were blowing horizontally across into my eyes, so I couldn’t see a thing.

The referee did take the lads off the pitch for twenty minutes and, looking back on it, I really think we should have pushed for an abandonment.

The players were shivering whilst back in the changing room and, although I know it was the same for both sides, the last twenty minutes or so descended into a bit of a lottery. I don’t think the players really got back up for it and it fizzed out.

The midweek trip to Margate was then postponed due to the weather and, by the time the home game against Enfield came around at the weekend I had decided I didn’t want to go through the same lottery that we had to at the end of the Wingate game.

With that in mind, I was pretty happy for it to be called off and so, instead, I arranged a friendly against our friends Pheonix Sports from the Kent League, which gave me the chance to rest a few players and see a few others in action.

A 4-1 win in that friendly was followed by another against Erith Town which ended with the same scoreline. I thought that we played particularly well in that game and it also gave me a second chance to look at some players.

Last weekend we made a return to league action with a tough trip to Bognor Regis where we would be faced with one of the division’s in-form sides.

Just like the trip to Wingate, we lost the game 2-1 but I think that we deserved to pick up at least a point from the game having missed a few key chances on what was, again, a very heavy pitch.

What cost us in the end was that there were a couple of players who were perhaps a little off their games, but our expectations have risen so much thanks to the results of the past few months, so perhaps I’m being a little harsh on them.

We did have a bit of a depleted team

FROM THE DUGOUT:

KEITHMcMAHON“The squad have a real commitment to the cause & I think that was evident at Dulwich

in the week with a great performance”

available as a result of the injuries and suspensions that have hit the squad recently.

Junior Baker played the game with a mask on having had his nose reset during the week - I think that’s a great example of the commitment that the squad have got for our cause as we approach the important stretch of the campaign.

That commitment was also evident when we travelled to promotion-chasing Dulwich Hamlet during the week.

For the third successive time, the scoreline didn’t go our way but I really thought that our performance was excellent once again.

We ought to have been a few goals in front when we came back in at half-time, and I really thought that every player had put in a real shift - we

looked like a really well-organised side.

Dulwich are very good though, but we still matched them stride for stride. But, as has been the story for us over recent weeks, we missed the crucial chances at key moments in the game and, if we’d taken one of them, I’m sure that we would have won the game.

Although we ultimately lost come the end of the evening, the game made me really positive during the journey back home that night.

I knew that the five games we had coming up were going to be a difficult challenge or us and that getting something from them would be a bonus.

For me, it is the final twelve-game

stretch that we’ll have coming up which is where our fate will lie

this season in the fight for survival.

We have a lot of teams to play who are in and around us

down at the bottom of the table and, if we continue to play in the same way that we have for the last three months, then I think that we will prove strong enough to pull through.

We’re going to need the right combination of luck along with some really hard work in the games to come, and we will be able to get there.

Let’s hope that we can start that this afternoon.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters of Wealdstone to the SCT and a safe journey home after an enjoyable game and refreshments.

I have to say that I was getting ready for a storm during last weekend’s trip to Bognor Regis, situated well in the flooded depths of West Sussex.

Fortunately for us, it waited until the game had finished or else the ground would never have withstood the deluge and wind that was eventually to follow.

For me, the team were very unlucky not to have come home with any points. If it had come down to effort and determination then we certainly would have.

We did go ahead early in the first half through a tremendous free-kick, but Bognor came back, took their chances and sealed all three points.

I must also congratulate Jack and the committee at Bognor for the welcome and hospitality that was given to all of the travellers, as well as the work that was carried out to ensure the pitch was playable.

Those efforts were very much appreciated as, having already booked

the team coach, cancellation would have been a financial catastrophe for the club.

For some reason, I was diverted from my usual route on the way home and ended up upon roads awash with water.

I must assure you, driving at nights with the fields either side resembling lakes is something I’d rather not repeat - but that’s what we do to support our club!

I feel sorry for those farmers, though - it must be a real headache and global warming has got a lot to answer for.

Before Christmas the team were playing without the rub of the green and, with the personnel changes Keith has made, we seem to have assembled a squad that can pull clear of the bottom four.

The players all seem to be enjoying themselves now and, personally, I feel that this squad will be capable of achieving our aims for the season.

Personally, I believe it is down to the unselfish and professional attitude of Keith - whatever the result, he gets on with the job, knows what’s required and is always out watching numerous matches each week. Keith also spends lots of time working with the younger

squads at the club, notably the U21s.

This week, Keith and I were saying that if running a football club was simply football-related on the pitch matters it wouldn’t be so bad but, unfortunately, bureaucracy has taken over.

To run a football club as a limited company is a 24/7 job for the directors, with no respite.

There’s always someone who needs something and matters to resolve - dealing with our landlords and the associated paperwork has become a toll and, on top of this, we have FA and Ryman League matters to contend with - the grading requirements for Sporting Club Thamesmead need to be completed by the end of March.

Despite this, as I tell Keith, watching your team playing on a Saturday afternoon in such a fantastic stadium makes all of those hassles diminish as far as I’m concerned.

Well, at least until Sunday morning!

IN OPPOSITION:

WEALDSTONE“It’s been a steady campaign for the Stones so far having topped the table seven times & been within the top three since November”

After three successive away games, and no points to show for it, Keith McMahon will be hoping that a return to home soil can reignite the Mead’s bid for survival.

However, they will face another difficult battle this afternoon as they welcome one of the division’s title-chasers, with Wealdstone the visitors.

The Stones are currently third in the table but, despite an eight-point deficit on Maidstone in pole position, their five games in hand will provide plenty of optimism for the final stretch of the season.

It’s been a steady campaign for Gordon Bartlett’s men so far, having topped the table on seven different occasions

and not dropped out of the top three since November, despite having more games postponed than most.

The side have been boosted by the goalscoring exploits of veteran striker Scott McGleish, with the well-travelled thirty-nine-year-old front man having netted fourteen league goals so far this season.

Following a run of nine wins in ten, two back-to-back defeats had brought the Stones back down to earth with a bump, but a 3-0 victory against Bury Town was followed up with a hard-earned point away at Lowestoft, illustrating that the side’s mettle has returned. But that mettle may prove essential during a run of seven away games in eight coming up for Bartlett’s side, though.

Wealdstone Football Club as we know it today was founded at the beginning of the 1899/1900 season.

Success came in the 1905/06 season, the Club becoming champions of the first division of the Willesden & District League. This success was short-lived and a report headed “Defunct” appeared in the local paper for October 20th 1906 stating that, due to a sad falling-off of interest among both players and fans, the committee was disbanding the Club completely.

It wasn’t until the 1908/09 season that the Wealdstone Football Club came into being again. The Club closed down for the duration of the First World War (1914-1918) and when football got underway again in 1919/20, Wealdstone entered the London League and the Middlesex Senior League.

Wealdstone’s biggest ever win was achieved during an FA Amateur Cup tie on 13th October 1923 against The 12th London Regiment (The Rangers), the final score being 22-0. Claude Mason scored seven of the goals to establish a new goal scoring record for a Wealdstone player in one game.

Three years later Bob Tansley equalled this record when he hit seven against Hertford Town in a Spartan League match on Christmas Day 1926. By winning this game 16-2 Wealdstone established what is still their biggest winning margin in a league match.

The 1929/30 season saw the Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup and Middlesex Senior Charity Cup won for the first time. In June 1942 Wealdstone became the first amateur team to play at Wembley Stadium when they met RAF (Uxbridge) in the final of the Middlesex Senior Red Cross Cup, the Stones winning the cup, 5-2 after extra time.

In December 1944 Wealdstone suffered their heaviest defeat to date, going down 14-0 to Edgware Town in a London Senior Cup tie. In October 1946 the Club were involved in the first televised football match, the BBC showing part of their Athenian League match at Barnet.

Wealdstone also took part in the first two “live” FA Cup ties ever to be seen by viewers when the whole of their victories over Edgware Town and Colchester United were televised by the BBC in November 1949.

In 1964 the Club joined the Isthmian League for the first time. Two years later they beat fellow Isthmian’s Hendon 3-1 in the FA Amateur Cup final at Wembley Stadium to bring the trophy to Lower Mead for the first and only time.

In 1971 Wealdstone turned professional, joining the Southern League. Since then four major league championships have been won by the first team as well as five cup competitions, but against that they have also suffered three relegations.

During the 1977/78 season Wealdstone reached the Third Round Proper of the FA Cup for the only time to date. Two Football League clubs, Hereford United and Reading, were beaten in the First and Second Rounds and in the Third Round Wealdstone lost 4-0 at Loftus Road against Queens Park Rangers who were in what was then the top division of English football, the old First Division.

Wealdstone were relegated for the first time in 1980/81 but the following season they won all five trophies on offer in the Southern League to return to the Conference at the first attempt.

The 1984/85 season was to be the Club’s most successful when they became the first of only three clubs so far to achieve the non-league “double”, winning the Football Conference and FA Trophy in the same season. Colchester United (1992) and Wycombe Wanderers (1993) are the other two, now playing in Leagues One and Two of the Football League respectively. To complete a “treble” Wealdstone also won the 1984/85 Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup beating Enfield in the final at Hendon FC.

Unfortunately at the end of the 1990/91 season the Club had to sell their Lower Mead home in order to stay in existence. An agreement was entered into with Watford FC to share the lease on their

Vicarage Road ground and the 1991/92 season was to become the first of seventeen seasons ground sharing with another club.

In 1996/97 Wealdstone won the Division Three championship and in 1997/98 they made it two promotions in successive seasons when finishing third in Division Two. The Club should have been promoted for a third season running in 1998/99 after finishing third in Division One. However, a couple of ground improvements required at Edgware to obtain the necessary “A” grading for promotion to the Premier Division were not completed until six days after the April 1st deadline. The Club eventually gained promotion to the Premier Division at the end of the 2003/04 season.

The 2007/08 season was to be Wealdstone’s last of seventeen successive seasons ground sharing with as, in January 2008, the opportunity for Wealdstone to take over the Grosvenor Vale site presented itself and was accepted. Last season was Wealdstone’s ninth successive one playing Premier Division football. The 2011/12 season saw Wealdstone reach the Isthmian League play-off semi-final, the FA Trophy semi-final and the final of the Middlesex Senior Cup. Last season they finished third in the Isthmian League and again qualified for the play-off semi-finals before losing 2-1 after extra time at home to Concord Rangers.

A club record which still stands to this day is held by Charlie Townsend who played for Wealdstone during their amateur days. He is the only player ever to make 500 league & cup appearances in the first team, his final game for the Stones in 1971 being his 514th.

Viv Evans holds the record for the most goals scored by a Wealdstone player during the amateur days, 216 between 1954 and 1969. Since the Club became semi-professional a new record has been set for the number of goals scored by one player. This was achieved by George Duck who scored a total of 251 between 1972 and 1979.

CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:

LEWISTOZER

“I can’t wait to get back out on the pitch & help the rest of my team to stay in this

league - it’s hard watching from the side!”

THE CAPTAIN

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to today’s game with Wealdstone, with this my first captain’s column of the season!

It’s been a difficult time for me recently as I’ve been out for six weeks now I think it is - the first two weeks were due to a suspension having been sent off against Billericay and, since then, I’ve been suffering with a hamstring injury.

I am hoping to be back fit from the hamstring injury soon though and I can’t wait to get back out on the pitch and help my team to stay in the league, as it’s so hard to watch from the sides.

Although the boys have suffered a couple of defeats on the road, the team had been going well for a while before that and we enjoyed two big wins against both Grays and Maidstone in my absence - the Maidstone win was even awarded the Performance of the Month award by the league!

We have been looking a lot more organised as a team since Simon Glover came in alongside Keith.

All of the boys are sure of the jobs that they’ve got to do out there and that’s been reflected in the results since the

turn of the year, apart from, of course, those last three away trips. As before, I really can’t wait to get back out there on the pitch and to be putting in a shift alongside the rest of the boys.

Fingers crossed, I can do that and help

us to stay in this division - it isn’t going

to be easy as it is a tough division, but

please stick with us and get behind the

boys this afternoon.

Enjoy the game,

Lewis

THE TREATMENT ROOM:

BEHIND THEGREEN DOOR“The shape was superb, the workrate was excellent - but we learnt a harsh lesson that you have to take your chances in football”

THE PHYSIO

Welcome back for today’s game and welcome to all who have joined us from Wealdstone in a big game for both sides.

Tuesday saw us travel to Dulwich Hamlet, facing a side who are capable of playing you off the park if you allow them to do so.

The gaffer had certainly done his homework though, as always, and set out a side that he knew were capable of getting a result that would have been much-needed and, ultimately, well deserved come the end of the ninety minutes.

In my opinion it would have been so

deserved as we genuinely matched them in every department.

The shape of the team was superb and the workrate that all of the lads put in was absolutely excellent, but it was a harsh lesson learnt ultimately.

You really have to take your chances in football, especially at this level, and it is true that the game is won and lost in both boxes.

In the end, a 2-0 defeat which was compounded by an injury time goal was certainly harsh, but there were also plenty of positives for us all to gain.

For me, the game proved that if the

lads can ensure they always stick to the game plan, keep an excellent shape throughout the whole of the ninety minutes and apply themselves with one-hundred percent effort, you will eventually get your just rewards.

This squad that Keith has assembled over the past few months is really full of belief that they can get out of the trouble we look like we’re in.

I know that each and every one of them will continue to work hard for each other and that they’ll all battle for every ball, in every game.

Stay positive - enjoy the game,Alan

BARRY LANDY’S DOWN IN THE BOX

www.downinthebox.co.uk | @BarryLandyDITB

A shock to those outside of the Swansea City circle, Michael Laudrup’s parting of ways with Swansea caught many people on the hop.

Those who are familiar with the machinations of the South Wales side however, will have seen this coming for some time. A club whose seemingly solid foundations have been assembled on building blocks going back to their escape from Football League relegation in 2003, were displaying little evidence of stability and harmony.

Piece by piece, the wall of invincibility that has pedestaled Swansea’s managers in high regard – read Jackett, Martinez, Sousa, Rodgers and for the most part Laudrup – had begun to crumble of late.

Perhaps that’s where Spanish defender Chico Flores picked up the brick he allegedly brandished in a training ground argument with teammate Garry Monk two weeks ago.

A number of listless performances of late, culminating in just one in the last ten games and just eight wins in 35 league games since their Capital One Cup triumph at Wembley seem to paint the latter part of the Dane’s admittedly short reign in a straightforward light.

His sacking, and it is just that regardless of phraseology, is reminiscent of Steve Clarke’s removal at West Bromwich Albion in that that appears to be no consensus of public opinion on the decision. Laudrup’s calendar year record is being used as a stick with which to beat him, but

ultimately that means little. The pros are obvious. In his 19 months in charge, he brought a first ever major trophy to the Liberty Stadium, the signing of the 2012/13 campaign in Michu and a high profile Spanish international in Pablo Hernandez too.

A world away from a Division Four relegation decider against Exeter City a decade ago. But there’s more to meets the eye with Laudrup. Certainly, more than mere results, good or bad, have provoked his removal at Swansea.

Rumours gathered pace last summer that his agent, Bayram Tutumlu’s growing influence on transfer policy irked chairman Huw Jenkins. There were murmurings too that some players were disillusioned with Laudrup’s laid back approach in training and on the sideline.

In the face of this apathy, why would Jenkins relinquish control in transfers, essentially expenditure, to a Laudrup ally? What the Dane failed to countenance was, while his chairman had no recent record

of sacking managers, his ability to pick a new man to build on what has gone before is unblemished.

When Wigan took Martinez, Sousa was brought in. His impressive season in charge led promotion chasing Leicester to their door. As they then struggled, Swansea’s new man Brendan Rodgers brought play-off success and Premier League safety.

Laudrup will have his suitors, but hardly on his terms. In an interview he gave to The Guardian in August 2012, the former Real Mallorca boss said the short life span afforded to managers at top cubs was “no life.”

That was amid talk that big clubs may come calling should his time at Swansea be a success. He said he would stay at a club, no matter the size, until he could improve them no more.

That’s probably the case in South Wales, but an ignominious ending will cast doubt over his credentials.

With Laudrup gone, Swansea put faith in Jenkins’ appointment track record

THE FEATURE

What with all the current controversies over 3G pitches and whether they are the future (a subject featured in our postponed Enfield Town programmes), Mike Green has decided to look through the history books to find some amusing stories of bad winters gone by.

There was a time, before global warming came along, when winters in this country were long and cold with snow a regular feature in all parts of the country. By far the worst winter to affect football, seeing hundreds of matches affected, were the freezing conditions just before Christmas 1962. For the next three months the list of postponements indicate just how bad things were.

It wasn’t until March 16th when a complete programme of football was played again. The season was eventually extended to the end of May - I wonder if such common sense will prevail in the current circumstance?

Back a bit further in time to the first post-war league season - 1946/1947 - was another decimated by a bitter winter. Well over a hundred league matches were postponed and it wasn’t until mid-June (seven weeks after the cup final was played) that the season finally came to an end. At one point, even the Government had asked for matches to be postponed!

With no floodlights available, re-arranged matches were played on midweek afternoons but with coal stocks low and industry almost at a standstill, the Government wanted to stop midweek football to prevent absenteeism from work by the supporters.

The British record for postponements for a single fixture, unsurprisingly, is for a match in the arctic north of the country. The Scottish Cup Second Round tie between Inverness and Falkirk was scheduled for 6th January 1979. However, after an astonishing twenty-

nine postponements, it was finally played on February 22nd 1979. Falkirk won 4-0 in the thirtieth attempt to stage the match. Three days later Falkirk lost 1-0 at Dundee in the first attempt to stage the Third Round tie!

And then there are some fixtures that appear to be jinxed!

Take the game in the 1968/1969 season between Spurs and Everton. When the two sides met last weekend, Tim Sherwood’s side won 1-0 - but forty-five years ago, the corresponding fixture took nearly six months to get played. The game at White Hart Lane was due to be played in November, but the day before a heavy fall of snow forced a postponement.

The re-scheduled date was Wednesday 17th December and the match started, but only lasted thirty minutes before being abandoned when a fault at a sub-station caused floodlight failure. Wednesday 7th January 1970 was the next date pencilled in for the fixture but that one didn’t happen either when Spurs had to play an FA Cup replay that evening.

The match was finally played on Wednesday 11th March and after a near three month wait, and three different programmes being printed, Spurs lost 0-1! Ironically, Spurs’ next match was three days later and was the return fixture against Everton at Goodison. That went ahead at the first attempt and Spurs lost that one as well, 2-3.

Back to the 1946/47 season, and West Ham United were due to make the long trip to Newcastle for a Division 2 fixture on March 8th 1947. However, the match was called off because of a frozen pitch - but Newcastle forgot to tell the Londoners. West Ham spent £77 travelling to St James Park but when they arrived at the ground the place was deserted! £77? God knows what the travelling cost would have been today!

Not all clubs have been disappointed when

requests for postponements get turned down. Rotherham United were due to visit Peterborough United’s London Road ground on Boxing Day 1999 for a Division 3 fixture, but asked for a postponement because their squad had been struck down by flu.

The Football League turned down their request and the match went ahead - and Rotherham won 5-0!

We’ll finish with possibly the one postponement that cost one of the clubs involved the most. Back in December 1996, Bryan Robson’s Middlesbrough called off their Premier League game at Blackburn without permission the day before the scheduled date of Saturday 21st, but boy did they suffer at the end of a heart breaking season.

Boss Robson claimed that Boro couldn’t field a competitive team as they had 23 players unavailable because of injury, illness or suspension. At a Premier League inquiry in January, Blackburn subsequently argued that they should have been awarded the points, but the match was ordered to be played and Middlesbrough suffered a three-point deduction and a £50,000 fine.

The game when played finished as a draw leaving Boro effectively with a minus two point return from the game.

Thing is, for a club in the relegation area in May, that point deduction was to see them relegated! The daft thing about it all is that if Robson had pulled on his own boots in the first place and they’d have played the game at Ewood Park, albeit with a much weakened side, and “just been thumped”, Boro would have stayed up.

As it was, not only did they end the season relegated from the Premier League, they also lost in the League Cup Final, and the FA Cup Final as well!

Payback, or just bad luck?!

MATCH REPORT:

ACTION REPLAY

The Mead slumped to their third successive away defeat as Dulwich Hamlet stayed level on points at the top of the Ryman Premier with Maidstone United.

Goals at the start and end of the second half secured a hard fought victory for the home side and although the Mead left without a point, the boys return to the SCT with plaudits for being “a vastly improved side”!

The match began with the Mead working hard and closing the promotion hopefuls down from the front although there was an early scare for the visitors when Ahmed Deen crossed for Jerome Walker to hit the bar with a header. The Mead responded and Shamir Mullings forced a good stop out of Dulwich keeper Chico Ramos.

The best chance of the half arrived in the 18th minute and fell to the Mead. A poor clearance from Ramos resulted in a shot on goal that saw Shamir have the straight forward task of rolling the ball into the net. Problem is for the Mead is that the keeper made a great recovery to block his Shamir’s. For long periods the complete neutral who hadn’t seen a League table would have failed to tell the teams respective League positions as the first half drew to a close.

That said, Dulwich responded to their half time pep talk and were quickly into their

stride after the break and took the lead on 47 minutes. Erhun Oztumer fired in a low drive which Sam Mott did brilliantly to block, but sadly for Motty it was Nyren Clunis who reacted quickest and turned the ball into the net. Buoyed by their success, the home side went looking for their second, but Motty denied Xavier Vidal from distance on not one, not two but three separate occasions!

The Mead were still very much in the game and midway through the second half perhaps should have scored. The ball ricocheted around the box as the home side strained to clear with the final rebound coming off a defender but just as it looked as though the Mead could have levelled things up the ball was superbly turned aside by Ramos who kept his side in the lead.

Spurred on, the home then themselves had a chance to double the lead, when in

the 71st minute chance to double the lead as a clever flick from Clunis sent Oztumer through on goal but with just Motty to beat, he sent the ball high over the bar.

Two minutes later saw the Mead’s best chance of levelling the score. A great run and cross from returning right back Calum McGeehan saw Shamir for once beat Ramos but sadly for the Gaffer and the Mead fans in the crowd, his header flew narrowly wide.

The home side sealed their victory as the game entered stoppage time with the Mead chasing the equaliser - and it was really tough on Motty who in the build up produced a fabulous save but was so unfortunate with the rebound. Mathieu Voter’s shot was magnificently deflected on to the bar by Sam, but as he tried to get his feet, Oztumer was on hand to seal the game for Dulwich and keep up the pressure at the top.

THE YOUTH TEAM:

THEY ALSOPLAY FOR US

Although Keith McMahon’s senior Mead squad have been enjoying a more successful time on the pitch in recent months, the Thamesmead Town U13s have also enjoyed themselves in what has been a successful season for them so far.

The well-documented weather has, of course, seen many games cancelled up and down the country, particularly at the grassroots level, but the Mead remain top of the U13s North table, as well as being unbeaten in their nine games - we have now won eight and drawn one.

Right throughout the club we try to continue the philosophy of playing good, attractive, free-flowing football and, through doing so, the U13s boys

have racked up an impressive forty-six goals in those nine games, as well as conceding merely five in response to that.

It is just a couple of weeks now until the boys take on Welling United in a crunch match on the horizon. Although it may not quite be a title decider just yet at this stage of the season, the winners will certainly find themselves in the pole position for what remains of the campaign.

It is not only a successful league campaign that the boys have enjoyed, though, having also done tremendously well in the Kent County Cup too.

The boys find themselves ready to take on Vinters in a tough and entertaining

final for the competition having come through a hard-fought 3-1 victory over local rivals Erith & Belvedere in the semi-final.

That final will take place on March 23rd ar Faversham Town, so why not come along and get behind the Mead’s youngsters? Who knows, perhaps they will prove to be a few of the future’s first team players!

It really would be excellent to see as many of you there, but before then we’re hoping to chalk up a few more league victories in a bit to cement our place at the top of the table. Looking at today’s game, here’s to a good result for the senior lads in the ongoing battle to pull away from the drop - come on the Mead!

You may have noticed it’s been raining recently. And you may have noticed it has been playing havoc with the fixture schedule.

Already there is talk of four-game weeks, season extensions and allowing players to play with armbands (and we haven’t even had the annual snow dump yet).

All in all it’s a great pain. But let’s put aside the fixture pile-up, the tired legs of footballers, let’s leave the 3G argument for another day and forget the suddenly blank pages of newspapers that need filling at the last minute.

For today we are going to remember the unsung heroes of the horrible weather: Groundsmen and programme editors.

These are the hardy lot, who deserve our thoughts. And in some cases prayers.

Not many of us can know the frustration of putting in all those hours before a game, only for a referee to come along and, with the roll of a ball, call it off. Thanks very much for all your efforts, but no go.

A groundsman knows his pitch like the back of his hand and every blade of

grass is lovingly cared for.

It’s an art form. A science most of us will never understand. I wouldn’t even be able to get the lines straight.

And our Saturday afternoons throughout the winter are in their hands. Often they’ll be at the ground earlier than anyone else, surveying the damage of the previous evening’s rainfall and grafting to get it playable.

Then when the game is on, they might have to listen to managers, players and fans slag it off.

It’s a cruel business.

Programme editors must share their frustration. Getting the thoughts of the chairman, speaking to the manager and interviewing a player all takes time.

Then they have to update all the stats, get the profiles from the visiting club and find some nice pictures.

Each page is then forensically proofed for misplaced apostrophes and misspelt names before sending it across to the printers – all with the rain lashing down outside.

When the game gets postponed, they have to start a lot of it again for the rearranged fixture in two months.

Who knows, this programme column may never see the light of day (for the best some might say).

Yes, the best groundsman and programmed editors are recognised with awards come the end of the season. But next time a game is off, spare them a thought.

Since the East Thurrock United game here on October 5th when a Tyrus Gordon-Young goal sealed all three points for the Mead, the club have been awarding a Man of the Match.

Each home game, the award will be made by the Cooper family, pictured above, who have very kindly sponsored the Mead Man of the Match award for the rest of the campaign.

Our sincere thanks go to the family for their continued support, whilst the Man of the Match award winners are listed below - who will add their name to the list this time?

Assuming that it’s finally stopped raining and we’re merely dodging the puddles, we welcome the players, supporters and officials of Wealdstone to Sporting Club Thamesmead for the first time this afternoon.

It’s also the weekend of love - so a belated Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone for yesterday and we hope everyone enjoys a safe trip home.

The SCT is still buzzing from the last home game when we followed up the hard-fought win over Grays with a scintillating result against Maidstone. The 4-1 win earned the Macron Team Performance of the Month award and, although we’re not too sure when we’ll receive it, we do know that we need similar performances until the end of the season.

It has been a hard battle on the pitch and, at times, that’s been reflected off the pitch as we continue to try and attract new sponsors and supporters - I’ve had a couple of meetings this week though so keep your eyes peeled on the official website in the coming weeks!

Another big thank you to the Cooper family for their ongoing sponsorship of the home Man of the Match award - it was a busy night for the Cooper’s after the Maidstone home game as, after awarding the whole team the award, a quick trip to the local off license was necessary as we discovered that the supply that we had wasn’t enough - thank goodness for late night supermarkets! To see who will get today’s award, please join us in the Mead Bar after the game - the presentation will be at about 5.15. Talking of the Mead Bar, and indeed the SCT itself, I had a meeting with the management of the centre and we’ve come up with some ideas to brighten up the Mead Bar and make it a bit more like home. Hopefully we could have the first part of the transformation ready in time for our next home game next Saturday. So, to next weekend when we host another promotion chaser in Kingstonian - boy, these fixtures aren’t kind to us at the moment, are they?!

Kick off will, as usual, be 3pm but don’t forget that before then we’ve now scheduled a midweek trip to the Kent seaside to face Margate - the game’s been called off twice already so it’s third time lucky on Tuesday at 7.45pm! Finally from me, we’re still looking for local companies who would like to become part of our family here at the SCT. We can offer you and your friends and/or colleagues a great afternoon out so, if you’re interested, simply get in touch with me on a matchday or by the contact details listed elsewhere on the page.

Enjoy the game,Greenie

NEXT AT THE SCT:

KINGSTONIANAlthough it feels as though it has been an age since the Mead were last in action here, they only have to wait another seven days to return in another battle against a promotion-chasing side.

Alan Dowson’s Kingstonian side, currently sitting in the middle of the play-off pack in fourth place, have built on their eleventh-placed finish last season to become a real contender for promotion this time around, and they will be hoping for a favour from the Mead this afternoon.

The K’s head into today’s home game with Hendon in the middle of a run of four successive home games - however, although it would have been seen as an opportunity, back-to-back defeats will need turning around to hold onto their play-off position.

A 2-1 loss at home to the Met Police was followed by a 3-0 defeat to table-topping Maidstone in a big six-pointer, and K’s boss Dowson insists that a big feature in the side’s form will be

keeping winger, Charlie Knight, fully fit.

“When Charlie is fully fit he will be the first name on the teamsheet,” he told the local press. “If we are going to achieve anything this season we need him to stay fit and playing.

“It is probably the first time ever at this

level, that he has been told he isn’t starting, but that’s good for the team too, because everyone knows they have to keep playing well to stay in the team.”

AFC Hornchurch are the only side who can use games in hand to overtake the K’s currently, whilst Dowson’s men have their eyes on Maidstone and Dulwich Hamlet with their spare fixtures.
