FROM THE EDITOR...Welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead for the second time this week as the Mead go in search of three points to kickstart their battle for survival.

It was heartache once again for Keith McMahon’s side on Tuesday night as a contentious ninetieth-minute penalty cruelly snatched a point away against a strong Bognor side, and a full report of the game is on page 22.

Reaction is throughout the programme this afternoon with many of our contributors taken aback by the late drama, whilst Tyrus Gordon-Young is our main feature as he gets over a recent injury.

We’re not back here until November 19th with two away trips to follow this afternoon’s game, but full fixture details are available on page 32.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN:

TERRYHILL

Good afternoon everyone and, firstly, let me welcome the players and officials of AFC Hornchurch to our new home here at Sporting Club Thamesmead.

This will be another tough game for us as Hornchurch are sitting nicely in fourth place in the league and on a good run of form, despite losing 3-0 away to Lowestoft last week - we can be sure they’ll be looking to bounce back from that defeat.

We will also be looking to put right our 2-1 defeat to Bognor Regis on Tuesday night. We played really well despite finding ourselves 1-0 down after twenty minutes, but we responded with a magnificent strike from twenty-five yards by Jordan Hibbert.

We had a chance to go 2-1 up with just the keeper to beat, but Ollie Bankole dragged his shot wide and the game looked like it was heading for a draw.

However, the game was spoilt when the referee awarded the softest of penalties to Bognor with just five minutes to go.

To be fair to them, Bognor’s committee and supporters agreed it was never a penalty, and told us it wasa already the sixth penalty their player had earned them this season by going down fairly

easily in the box.

It was a very disappointing result for Keith and the team after we had played so well against a strong side riding high in the league.

There could be no consoling Keith after the game having once more been left with no points to show for a good performance. Bognor’s manager apologised to Keith straight after the game and even went into the referee’s dressing room to agree that he had made a mistake.

During the week we had a seven day approach by Kingstonian for Javlon Campbell and, after initially agreeing to stay with us, he changed his mind and decided to move to Kingstonian. But we all wish him well for his future.

Keith acted fast and signed Mikel Suarez on loan from Tonbridge Angels

and also extended the loan of Ollie Bankole. We welcome both players, plus another new signing in the form of Chris Saunders. I’m also pleased to see that Junior Baker has returned to the club.

We have also started a Man of the Match award for home which has been kindly sponsored by the Cooper family, and so far the recipients are Rob Budd and Lewis Tozer who will be presented with their awards today before the game in the board room.

Before the game there will be a minute silence for Remembrance Sunday tomorrow - I please ask that you would all be upstanding when the referee blows his whistle.

Let’s get behind the boys.

Enjoy the game,Terry

FROM THE DUGOUT:

KEITHMcMAHON“Tuesday put me through every emotion in the book but I still believe that I have the

squad to climb up the table”

Good afternoon and welcome back for today’s game against AFC Hornchurch, and welcome to Jimmy McFarlane and his team - hope you enjoy your short stay here and I hope you have a safe journey home afterwards.

Tuesday put me through every emotion in the book. Firstly, frustration - the game nearly didn’t go ahead due to an electrical problem with the floodlights.

The problem was fixed five minutes before Bognor were leaving - as usual, things were left to the last minute! It wasn’t the best preparation for a game but, unfortunately, some people don’t see that or even maybe care.

The game itself had me feeling very pleased with our performance, but also very angry by the referee who cost us two hard-earned points with a last minute penalty.

Everyone in the ground had seen a dive but not Mr West. I don’t normally criticise referees - we’ve had a lot of good ones this year and I have told them so, even when we have lost, but Mr West’s performance was inexcusable.

I wished we had Dermott Gallagher sitting in the stand to explain where he went wrong as the two hour conversation I had with him last week would have underlined what we were saying about mistakes.

It’s not just the mistake, but the reaction afterwards which angered me. We all make mistakes and I can accept that, but at least own up to them.

Both of the Bognor managers apologised

for their player diving afterwards saying he is a young player, that he does it regularly and that it’s something they’re trying to get out of him.

They said they thought we deserved a point and that the decision was embarrassing. I was very taken back with their comments as they didn’t need to say anything, but it goes to show what top men there are and it’s something I will never forget.

I went in to the referee’s room fuming, but I held it together and I asked him to explain the penalty. He said he was seven yards away, there was definite contact and it was a penalty.

I told him that was what upset me - he was so close and even their boss thought he dived, but the referee rubbished that and said the manager had gone in to say how well he did.

I said that if their manager came in, told him that his player had dived then would he apologise, so he told me to go and get him. Bognor’s manager then revealed he’d asked the player did he dive, and the player said he went down very easily whilst smiling. So I asked the ref to own up that he has made a mistake and he couldn’t.

Over the years I’ve tried to calm down with referees as you get nowhere, so I’m older and more respectful. The last time I got sent off was three years ago in the FA Trophy, and guess who was in the middle?! Anyway, rant over but I had to say something.

I thought we did really well in the game itself, especially in the first half where we were the

better side. The ball was cleared from the line a number of times but we just couldn’t score. We could have done better with their opener, but I thought we showed great character to get a goal straight back and it was a wonderful strike by Jordan Hibbert.

Bognor looked more dangerous in the second half, but I thought we defended really well and could nick a goal on the break. The game looked destined for a draw and it would have been what we deserved.

We were all gutted afterwards and, when you’re at the wrong end of the table, things don’t go for you.

There were a lot of positives to take out of the game, though, and if we can put in performances like that throughout the season then I’m sure we can get out of trouble.

We will need one of those performances today if we are going to stand any chance. AFC Hornchurch are a very strong side and one of the contenders to go up this year, but every game is difficult. We have played, after today, eleven of the top twelve already, so it’s been a tough start.

The next three league games will be against teams around us when we play Harrow, Carshalton and Hampton & Richmond, so we need to keep building and believing. I still believe I have the squad to climb the table and I know, if we perform to our best today, that we are more than capable of getting a result.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

FROM THE BOARDROOM:

PAULBOWDEN-BROWN“The boys need our full support & positivity

around them - I’m sure we’ll be safe but please not to the last game of the season!”

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters of AFC Hornchurch to the SCT and a safe journey home after an enjoyable game and refreshments.

Well, we’re back here at SCT once again this week after the very exciting game on Tuesday evening against Bognor Regis. I could not personally be at the match so I have had to rely on listening to other people’s reports of the game and, to a man, everyone suggested that our boys did very well. We could even have won the game had we had the rub of the green, despite coming up against a very strong Bognor defence.

It’s a great shame that after 89 minutes of both teams playing some good football and heading towards a fair result, a Bognor player took a dive in the penalty area and fooled the referee into assuming that serious physical contact had been made.

The resulting penalty determined that instead of the points being shared, Bognor took all three home with them and we, of course, remained in the basement of the league.

I was also advised that everyone in the ground, excluding the referee, also knew that it had been a dive and did not merit giving our opponents a penalty. Amongst those that did not think it a genuine penalty call were the opposing Bognor management, but the referee was not honest enough to at least agree to Keith that he had made a genuine mistake.

You read in the press about the FA using

retrospective powers against players, may I suggest that they look at some referees and their high and mighty attitudes - refusing to accept that they are capable of making a genuine mistake.

The referees have linesman to assist them, so why do they not work with them more? Involve them in the game more and let them become a more influential part of his team, so when a decision as important as a penalty needs to be made - that can make or ruin a good game of football - at least there is the opportunity of taking third party advice.

Thankfully it is only a very small minority of referees who, once they are on the pitch, think they are a law unto themselves. Their inability to think anything other than that they are always correct can do so much damage to football club morale both on and off the field.

Meanwhile, if young players see that referees take notice of dives they will bring it into their own game - something I would not like to see happen.

Anyway, enough of me ranting, but I honestly believe that when you are fighting for your lives at the bottom of a division all you ask is that fair decisions are made on the pitch.

Unfortunately, when you are fighting, you need that rub of the green but seldom get it - all that I ask is for honesty in all decisions made without being persuaded by players’ actions.

On a positive, Keith has been busy bringing

in new players to strengthen the squad and hopefully it will not take long for these players start to settle down.

Hopefully we can achieve what we all know is possible under the continued leadership of Keith who I, personally, feel is one of the greatest young managers in the game.

Keith is the reason I came to the club - when I speak with him in the week after a match he is always positive with what the team will eventually achieve.

Yes, of course he gets down and frustrated, as we all would in the lonely job of management, so Keith and our boys need to know they have our full support from the terraces.

When we see the players in the bar before and after the game, always be positive and I am sure they will achieve a safe position by the end of the season. But, for the sake of my health, please do not leave it until the last game of the season!

Anyway this afternoon we will be up against a very strong team as AFC Hornchurch have always been known to be a very tough team to play.

They’ll never give up until the final whistle, so let’s cheer on our respective teams and hopefully at around 4:45pm we will have another three points in our quest for safety.

HORNCHURCH“The Urchins suffered a surprise 3-0 defeat last weekend but, prior to that, had won six

of their last seven league games”

On Tuesday night, the Mead fell to a 2-1 defeat to arguably the in-form side of the division, and it doesn’t get any easier today as we welcome AFC Hornchurch.

The Urchins suffered a surprise 3-0 defeat last weekend as they travelled to Lowestoft but, prior to that, they had lost just one league game all season, winning six of their last seven.

Moreover, Jimmy McFarlane’s side missed out on an FA Cup First Round trip to League Two side Burton Albion by a hair’s width, suffering heartache with a last-gasp defeat at home to Hereford United in the final qualifying round.

It’s all set to be a promising season for a side that will be looking for an immediate return to the Conference

South following relegation last season, and the Urchins have been boosted by the addition of long-serving Chelmsford skipper, David Rainford.

Rainford provides a wealth of experience into the middle of the park for McFarlane’s side with Football League experience, too.

With Christmas just around the corner, McFarlane believes now could be the time for his side to stamp their authority on the league.

“Now is the time when one team breaks away and puts together a run,” he told the Romford Recorder. “We’re hoping it’s us and we’ve got the players to do it.

“Every game is massive from now until the end of the season.”

The club’s history dates back to 1923 when the team were formed as Upminster Wanderers. The name was presumably chosen because the club did not initially have a ground of its own.

They remained in the Romford League until 1938, when they stepped up to the Spartan League and at the same time dropped the ‘Wanderers’ from their title, the original Upminster FC having folded in 1930.

Spartan League football resumed in 1945-46 but Upminster, worried about a shortage of players, spent that campaign in the Romford League and finished champions, also winning the Essex Junior Cup in front of a 4,000 crowd.

Back in the Spartan League after that, they were promoted to the Premier Division in 1951 and a year later joined the Delphian League, changing their name to Hornchurch & Upminster as they prepared to move into the new Hornchurch Sports Stadium. They took up residence there in November 1952 and have remained there ever since. It is actually in Upminster, though in 1960 that town was dropped from the club’s title and it became Hornchurch FC.

By then, in 1959, the club had been elected to the Athenian League. They were to win the Division One championship in 1967 but were relegated in 1969 and promoted back again in 1971.

1974/5 saw the club reach the fifth round of the very first FA Vase competition where they lost to eventual finalists Epsom & Ewell by one goal. That performance helped the club gain election to the Isthmian League. In 1978, the club once again suffered relegation but three years later they were back after achieving the runners-up slot behind Feltham.

It was a false dawn, to say the least. Apart from a tenth-place finish out of 21 in 1995, it would be 19 years before Urchins again finished in the top half of their table. They survived several brushes with relegation before losing their Division One place in 1986 and continued to struggle in Division

Two North. Matters became even worse in 1989 when a fire destroyed the clubhouse and it took many years to recover.

Things were soon to change dramatically as the club was taken over and restructured. Second place in Division Three in 2002 brought promotion to Division One North as the league was reorganised and another runners-up spot followed in 2003 to take Urchins into the Premier Division for the first time. Much work was also done on the near-derelict stadium, allowing the club to take its place in the new Conference South after finishing fifth in 2003-04, though the season was more notable for a run to the second round of the FA Cup in which Darlington were beaten 2-0 before Tranmere stole a controversial 1-0 victory in front of TV cameras and a capacity crowd at Bridge Avenue.

The dream continued a little longer as, under former Dagenham manager Garry Hill, the team stormed to the top of Conference South. It seemed too good to be true, and it was. On a grim Thursday in November the entire squad was released. Urchins were due to visit Arlesey Town for an FA Trophy tie two days later and local bookies, unaware of developments, were shocked by a sudden rush to back Arlesey at odds of 9-1. Alas, a cobbled-together Urchins team including nine youth team players pulled off a famous 1-0 victory!

The season descended into chaos. Almost 100 players wore first-team shirts as new manager Tony Choules contrived to avert relegation despite a ten-point deduction,. Indeed, without that the club would have finished in a remarkable ninth place.

But the off-pitch affairs could not be resolved and the club reformed under the name AFC Hornchurch, to be placed by the FA in the Essex Senior League.

A brand-new Urchins squad proceeded to run away with the championship and also won the league’s two cup competitions, becoming the first side to achieve the treble.

Colin McBride took over for the return to the Ryman League and Urchins romped

to a second successive title, amassing 103 points to finish 21 clear of runners-up Harlow. They also won the Essex Senior Cup for the first time in the club’s history, beating Great Wakering 2-1.

The following season also proved to be an eventful one. The biggest thrill, and the most bitter disappointment, was a 1-0 defeat by Peterborough United at a packed Bridge Avenue in the first round of the FA Cup. Urchins held their opponents for 90 minutes and even had a goal disallowed but their hearts were broken by a goal by Craig Mackail-Smith in added time.

Things were still not right off the field and manager Colin McBride took control of the club midway through the 2009-10 campaign in an effort to sort out the problems caused by the previous regime. His assistant Jimmy McFarlane took over team affairs, initially as caretaker though later to be confirmed in the job.

It was a similar story in 2010-11, when Urchins were unable to sustain their play-off bid in the closing weeks and missed out by four points, finishing tenth.

But the ‘two Macs’ achieved their ambition the following season as Urchins recovered from three successive defeats in August to storm into play-off contention. They topped the table more than once, eventually having to settle for the runners-up spot behind Billericay.

Bury were beaten 3-1 in the play-off semi-finals and a tense final against Lowestoft was goalless after 90 minutes. After taking the lead in extra time only to be hauled back to level terms, Urchins snatched a 2-1 victory with a 119th-minute goal by Michael Spencer and returned to Conference South.

It proved to be a difficult season and, despite a brief flirtation with the play-off spots, six dropped points to bottom club Truro proved decisive as Urchins finished 20th, two points short of safety. Then, following the last-gasp approval of Farnborough’s CVA, they became the first team in the nine-year history of Conference South not to gain a reprieve.

Another summer signing, the 26-year-old started at Crystal Palace before moving on to Conference football with Ebbsfleet, Tonbridge, Braintreee and Dover. Also an accomplished midfield man, Starkey was with Margate last season.

PHIL STARKEY

INIGO ECHEPAREAfter the departure to Australia of Joe Woolley, who played every minute of every league and cup game last season, a number of players were given trials between the posts and the tall Echepare proved the best.

Only just 22, he was previously with Spanish club Real Union in his home town of Irun. Founder-members of La Liga, they now play at the third level. Made his Hornchurch debut on opening day and was named man of the match.

LUKE ROBERTSGoalkeeper signed in late September from Erith & Belvedere, whom he joined from Greenwich Borough. Made his debut in a League Cup defeat at Billericay Town.

ALEX BENTLEYFull-back signed in the summer of 2012 from Cray Wanderers. Was deservedly named player of the year in his first season at Hornchurch but left for Bromley in the summer, only to return two days before the start of this campaign. Aged 23, he was previously with Dagenham & Redbridge.

BILLY COYNERight-back and long-throw specialist, aged 24. Rejoined the club from Concord Rangers towards the end of last season. Played well over 100 games in Hornchurch colours before leaving at the end of the 2010-11 season. Was with Arsenal and QPR as a youngster.

RICKIE HAYLESAnother player who can’t keep away from the Stadium. Now in his third spell as an Urchin, he was a regular member of the 2011-12 promotion-winning side but joined Canvey that summer, only to return in March this year. It was a similar story in the summer of 2010, when Hayles had brief spells with Thurrock and East Thurrock before rejoining Urchins in September. A competitive defender and another

long-throw merchant, the 29-year-old has also played for Ilford, Tilbury and Eton Manor.

ELLIOT STYLESThe tough-tackling club captain, 28 years old, made his 300th appearance on opening day, his seventh at the Stadium. He is only the second player in the club’s history to reach that landmark. Also a very competent goalkeeper in emergencies, he previously played for Ilford and Redbridge. Misses out today because of suspension.

CHRIS BOURNEFebruary 2013 signing from Met Police, aged 28, with 16 caps for Guyana to his credit. After playing for Southend United as a junior, he represented Canvey Island (where he lives), Billericay Town, Welling United, Brentwood Town, Heybridge Swifts, Staines Town and Croydon Athletic before joining the Met in 2010.

FRANKIE CURLEYPowerful 30-year-old central midfielder

who originally signed for Urchins from Redbridge, where he was club captain, in October 2006.

Took time out from senior football for the 2009-10 season, then joined Aveley but returned to Hornchurch in October 2010 and has now passed 200 appearances. One of four Urchins selected for the Ryman Premier all-star team by club managers in 2011-12.

TAMBESON EYONGEx-West Ham junior who spent time with Dagenham, Aveley and Harlow before becoming an Urchin in March 2010. A hard-running 24-year-old right-winger, a capable centre-back when needed, and a crowd favourite.

SAM LECHMERETalented 22-year-old midfielder who has already packed in plenty of Conference experience with Grays, Braintree, Boreham Wood and Billericay, as well as playing Ryman Premier football with Aveley. Injury sidelined him for the pre-season programme and the early league matches but ias

now a regular member of the squad.

JOEY MAYSummer 2012 signing who spent the two previous campaigns with Aveley, who he joined from Ilford. Mainly on the bench for the first part of his debut season but established himself in the last two months. Aged 25, he aims to maintain his first-choice status this time around.

MICHAEL SPENCERHero of the 2012 Ryman play-offs with the winning goal a minute from the end of extra time in the final against Lowestoft. Turned out for Enfield, Thurrock and Fisher before becoming an Urchin in February 2009 and scoring in the fourth minute of his debut, a 2-1 win at Harrow Borough. The 27-year-old, who can operate anywhere on the left-hand side , recently became the third member of the squad to reach the 200-game mark.

LEIGH BREMNERSigned in late September from Cray

Wanderers, for whom he made his 300th appearance in a 6-1 home defeat by Urchins in August.

He scored the consolation goal, his 127th for the Kent club. His long service with them was interrupted by a brief spell of travelling which took him to Dulwich, Folkestone, and Carshalton.

STEFAN PAYNESigned at the end of August, a hard-working striker who was snapped up by Fulham from Sutton United for a substantial fee in 2009 at the age of 18.

Unable to reach the first team at Craven Cottage, he moved to Gillingham and made 28 Football League appearances, as well as one on loan to Aldershot Town, before returning to non-league football.

Played in the Conference Premier for Macclesfield and Ebbsfleet last season. Made Hornchurch history in a 3-2 victory at Dulwich by becoming the first Urchin to score twice on debut

One of three summer signings from Margate, having joined them in February when he was also an Urchins target. Four outstanding pre-season goals made him an instant favourite and he followed up with eight goals, several of them spectacular, in his first eight league games. He then suffered an injury and, such is the strength of the squad, he was unable to regain his starting place for several weeks once fit again. The skilful 25-year-old has spent most of his career with Conference clubs in the south-east but also had a spell with York City.

GEORGE PURCELL

after coming on as a substitute, and was promptly handed a contract.

CARL ROOKTall, powerful centre-forward who had a brief spell at the Stadium at the end of the 2011-12 season, scoring in the last league game against Leatherhead when a 2-1 victory clinched runners-up spot and finding the target again in the 3-1 play-off semi-final victory over Bury Town.

Spent most of his career in Kent, including a highly-successful spell at Tonbridge. Joined Margate in the summer of 2012, making 35 appearances and scoring eight goals, before returning to Hornchurch in July.

MARTIN TUOHYProlific scorer who won the Ryman League Golden Boot in 2008-09, with 39 league goals for East Thurrock, and was voted into the Premier all-star team by club managers three years later.

Spent a year with Aveley before joining Hornchurch for the 2010-11 season. Scored 69 goals in his first three years with the club and was hoping to become the first player to finish as the top-scoring Urchin four times in succession until he suffered a pre-season injury from which he has yet to return.

ADE YUSUFFAnother promising 19-year-old who signed after impressing in the friendlies, he made his debut as a half-time substitute on opening day. Formerly with Stevenage, he had a brief spell with Banbury United last season and a longer one with St Neots Town.

THE TREATMENT ROOM:

BEHIND THEGREEN DOOR“The green room has been quiet lately, but the main worry is Anton who is currently

waiting on some scan results”

THE PHYSIO

I’ve been involved in football for many years and seen many bad decisions, but Tuesday night’s last minute penalty was perhaps the worst of them all!

When the opposition are apologising for a dive it becomes a bitter pill to swallow - but what a quality club they are for their post-match comments.

The work rate and effort was excellent though against one of the best teams in the league - it shows we are capable of living with them all.

The green room has been quiet lately, but the main worry is Anton who is

currently waiting on scan results. Becks is back in training though so it is nearly a full squad for Keith again.

Aside from the usual bumps and bruises, Ross is the only long-term injury and we’re waiting on a possible operation following his scan.

It’s been a while since I had a rant, so it’s about time and here goes - referees are always the main topic of conversation at all levels of the game.

Parents kill their confidence by digging out the younger referees at youth games - they’re learning their skills at controlling the game just as much as

the players are learning too.

So many are left to fend for themselves without mentoring, and to progress I think they need help and to learn how the mind of a player works. I’ve seen tackles described as aggressive when simply giving their all for the ball.

For me, it’s knowing the difference which is where ex-players should be involved - how many club’s ask refs to attend a training session?

Interpretation and communication is the key.

Football clubs and the media – sometimes it can be a weird relationship.

In the last fortnight reporters have been stopped from doing their jobs by two famous footballing names.

Newcastle United have banned three local papers – The Journal, The Chronicle and the Sunday Sun – for their coverage of a fans’ protest march.

In the same week Port Vale slapped a ban on The Sentinel because chairman Norman Smurthwaite reckons they’ve been running too many negative stories. He’s also thinks they should pay £10,000 to cover the League One club. It’s all a bit unseemly and, worryingly, seems to be happening more and more.

Football sells papers (and positive stories will often shift more) and clubs need the media to spread the word and stoke interest. It has to be a two-way thing.

We could debate all day about whether clubs should be allowed to restrict access to journalists. At the top of the game it, arguably, already is.

For many managers, Press conferences are something to be endured and some clubs are less than helpful when

it comes to grabbing a word with a player. Just ask our lads on the Football League Paper.

The NFL in America, which draws huge audiences at home and across the world, run a slightly different ship.

Gagging the newspapers and those nasty journalists simply doesn’t happen. In fact there are rules – reporters are allowed into the dressing rooms ten minutes after the game where everyone must be available for interview. That’s everyone.

Star players have to be put up for interview in the week leading up to games and they also have to be available for the opposition’s media too.

We’re fortunate here at The NLP – and we’re grateful for it. Without managers, players and chairmen picking up their phone or calling us back there would be no paper in your newsagents on a Sunday morning.

As a small team it is impossible for us to get round and meet everyone face-to-face at training, games or at weekly press conferences (for those that do have them).

Thankfully managers are happy to help us get in contact with their hat-trick hero and promote their club.

Recently some have been getting a bit more, let’s say, professional and want any contact to be given the green light. Frustrating when you’re trying to juggle ten stories and already have a number in the contacts book for the player you want to speak to.

In my first weeks at The NLP I remember ringing a sacked Step 5 boss who refused to speak to me until I read his statement, which was promptly sent through by his advisor.

Now us hacks will all tut and roll our eyes and there will be people reading this column now thinking, ‘typical bloody journalist expecting everything his way’.

Whatever the relationship, essentially, both football and the media need each other. Who needs the other more, I’ll let you decide.

SCT UPDATES

18 The Mead v AFC Hornchurch

It was another difficult evening for Keith McMahon and his side on Tuesday night as the Mead suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Bognor Regis.

The heartache was compounded by the winner for the Rocks not only coming in the ninetieth minute, but also from the twelve-yard spot following a contentious decision that was viewed in disbelief by even their own players and supporters.

With the Rocks in top form heading into the game and flying high in the Ryman Premier League table, it was a difficult pill to swallow for the Mead who could easily have taken all three points themselves.

And, following another ninety minutes with nothing to show for the side’s hard work and endeavour, Mead striker Tyrus Gordon-Young admitted that the

side are due a break at some point.

“Nothing really seems to be working for us at the moment,” he admitted to the matchday programme. “We’ve just got to keep working as a team and stick together - I think we just need a lucky break or two, to be honest.”

It is another tough tale for McMahon’s side following promotion from the Ryman North last season, with just seven points from the opening fifteen matches.

Although there has been a fair share of misfortune along the way, Tyrus revealed both that he is enjoying the higher level of football as well as what he believes the immediate differences are.

“It’s without doubt much more difficult,” he explained. “The teams are a lot more organised and physical at

this level.

“I don’t think there’s really much difference in the football quality, but the physicality is definitely that much more.

“I’ll have to admit that I’m enjoying it though, although I’ve never been involved at the wrong end of the table before so that’s the challenging part!”

Tyrus appeared to be getting back to his old self in recent weeks, putting in a string of impressive performances as well as finding the back of the net a couple of times.

However, that run of form was ground to a halt in the recent fixture at Kingstonian, when he was carried off early on with a nasty looking injury.

Thankfully for all at the club, the big front-man has made a swift return to

action and will be hoping to get back onto the goal trail as soon as he can.

He said of the injury: “I’m fine now after a few weeks. It is still a bit painful and I’ve got a bit of bruising on my hip bone, but I’m alright.”

Tyrus has been with the Mead for a while now and was able to enjoy the rollercoaster ride of last season, previously playing for Erith Town.

He revealed that he has a friend to thank for his journey to Sporting Club Thamesmead, with a recommendation to go and join in with training leading from one thing to another.

“I initially joined Erith Town after a friend had suggested that I head along and try out,” he explained.

“But following some internal politics at the club I found myself down here at Bayliss Avenue, and we had some great times last season.

“The play-off final was, undoubtedly, the best game that I have ever played in, but we’ve now got to push on and make the most of that - I’m sure that we’ll get somewhere.”

Any Mead fans who peruse Twitter will have noticed that Tyrus has a strong relationship with the Mead boss, and the striker admitted that McMahon is someone who he respects on a professional and personal level.

“Keith is a good guy,” he continued. “I have got a lot of respect for him as he puts a lot of his own life and time into this club.

“You have to respect him for that. He has got a bit of an iron fist at times, if he’ll let me say that(!), but then you do need that sometimes in the dressing room.

“There are so many different styles of management and everyone does things their own way - as players, it is just something that we have to get on with.”

Following the testing time on the pitch at the start of the season, there have been a host of changes in personnel with a number of comings and goings on the playing staff.

Although you might wonder whether there are any fractions in the dressing room over the difficult start, Tyrus revealed that the family culture of the club stretches well into the changing room.

“It’s all fine - of course, one or two are getting frustrated with results and so on, but we’re a team and a family, just like we were last season,” he stated. “We’ve got a new family this season with the new arrivals, but we still all stick together in exactly the same way.

“We’re all together when we come into training, we get serious and we also get told off together, too!

“But there’s still a long way to go with a lot of games and a lot of teams to play, so we’ll keep going and see where it takes us.”

RYMAN LEAGUE ROUND-UP

LEAGUE ROUND-UP:

RYMAN REVIEW

Bognor Regis Town achieved an eighth win in ten Ryman Premier games on Tuesday night when they won 2-1 at Bayliss Avenue against second-bottom Thamesmead Town.

The struggling hosts had slightly the better of the first half though and following an early corner Bognor’s players had to hack the ball off the line four times in 20 seconds!

But on 22 minutes the Rocks went ahead through Ben Johnson, only for Mead to equalise within a minute, courtesy of Jordan Hibbert.

It looked like a draw was on the cards until the last minute of normal time saw Ollie Pearce brought down in the box and Johnson converted the spot-

kick to win it for the Rocks.

In the only other league game on Tuesday night, Harrow Borough extended their unbeaten league run away from home to four games with a hard-fought draw at the Beveree against Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Boro took a 19th minute lead, Steve Butterworth picking up the ball wide on the right and running all the way from half-way into the Hampton box, then hitting a low shot past Rodney Chiweshe.

But Hampton came back and equalised in the 24th minute, with Harrow’s defence unable to clear a left-wing attack and Charlie Moone smashing in a low shot from close in.

RAINFORD COUP SIGNALS INTENT FOR

URCHINSAFC Hornchurch manager Jimmy McFarlane demonstrated his side’s Ryman Premier title ambitions on Friday night with the signing of Chelmsford City legend Dave Rainford.

McFarlane snapped up the 34-year-old veteran midfielder after he asked to leave the Conference South’s Clarets. During his five years at Melbourne Park, the all-action Rainford made more than 150 appearances and scored nearly 50 goals.

The Urchins say Rainford, who skippered City and in 2012 was appointed assistant manager, will go straight into McFarlane’s squad for their trip to Lowestoft Town on Saturday and will also join the coaching staff.

In statement on their website announcing Rainford’s arrival, the Urchins said: “A huge favourite at Melbourne Park for his drive and leadership, Dave will add vital strength and experience to the middle of the park.”

MATCH REPORT:

ACTION REPLAY

A heart breaking, contentious, and controversial penalty sent the Mead spinning to an underserved midweek defeat and left the side marooned in the relegation zone of the Ryman Premier.

Bognor Regis Town bagged all three points on the evening and headed back to the Sussex coast with the victory handed to them on a plate by the referee, Neil West. After Ben Johnson’s opener had been cancelled out within a minute midway through the first half by Jordan Hibbert’s 35 yard pile driver, the game seemed destined for a deserved point each when Bognor sub Ollie Pearce went down in the box.

The disbelief around the ground almost to a man (or woman) from both home and away fans was almost deafening, but despite the Thamesmead protest’s Johnson kept his cool to drill the ball into the net to take the points.

A furious Mead boss Keith McMahon confronted the official at the final whistle - his disbelief and frustration evident for all to see and to be fair, almost everyone had sympathy with

Keith who is working tirelessly to get his side climbing the table. The home side were forced onto the back foot early on yet it was Thamesmead who could have struck first.

Tyrus Gordon-Young was first denied by the legs of keeper Mark Zawadski and then as the ball was poked back

towards goal somehow the Bognor defence recovered to hack the ball to safety.

Danny Phillips then sent in a shot for the home side that Zawadski did well to gather at the base of his left post, before the visitors struck. Aaron Hopkinson did well down the right outpacing the home defence

and his whipped ball into the near post was touched home by a stretching Johnson to open the scoring.

It’s often said in football that defensively you’re more likely to concede when you’ve just scored - this was the case in this game - but what a leveller it was.

Jordan picked the ball up just inside the Bognor half advanced ten yards and left fly with a vicious driven shot into the top corner that Zawadski admired as it flew past him. Tyrus then went close to putting the home side in front after a delightful through ball from George Monger - the striker just couldn’t direct his shot inside the post, whilst at the other end home keeper Rob Budd produced a stunning save to deny a Johnson free kick. The second half began with the visitors on top and Buddy again made a great

save to deny Ben Godfrey after a great interchange with Terry Dodd.

Johnson then drove a cross in that Buddy did well to hold onto as forwards and defenders alike slid in trying to get a touch, before substitute Pearce then had a goal chalked off as a ball somehow found its way all the way through the box. George then had a shot from distance just too high from Tyrus’ lay off, as at the other end, Pearce shot straight at Budd from four yards.

Moments later, Buddy made the save of the night to deny Johnson’s curler coming in of the left wing, whilst as play flowed from end to end, Thamesmead sub Dan Ailey missed

a golden chance only moments after coming on for the hard working Tyrus.

The tall sub did well to create room for the

chance but just couldn’t quite get the direction on his poked shot and the chance was gone.

Then as 90 minutes elapsed

came the nights big talking point and

moment of controversy as Johnson won the game for Bognor

drilling home from the spot. This defeat really was a tough one to take for Keith to take and was still clearly shaken long after the final whistle. It would probably be correct to guess that referee West wont be getting a Christmas card from anyway at Bayliss Avenue this year.

COMMERCIALCORNER

Good afternoon everyone as we bid welcome to the players, officials and supporters of AFC Hornchurch to Sporting Club Thamesmead - here’s hoping the finale is better than Tuesday.

Do you own a local company or are associated with one and would like to become part of our family here at the SCT? Simply get in touch with me on a matchday or by the contact details listed elsewhere on the page.

Originally we were looking at staging Chairman’s Day this afternoon with the intention of raising as much money as possible for the 2013 BBC Children In Need Appeal (which is going to be on your TV’s screens next Friday night from 7pm). However, when we realised that this weekend is Remembrance Sunday, we decided to postpone our main fundraising until our next Saturday home game when we welcome Carshalton Athletic on November 23rd - that said, watch out for the first sightings of the collection buckets today!

Following our recent Sportsman’s Dinner, we have a limited number of 2014 club diaries available to sell from tonight at a cost of just £5 each.

I would also like to (on behalf of the players) thank the Cooper family for their sponsorship of the home Man of the Match award. The plan is that the presentation will take place in the Mead Lounge after every home game, so why not hang around for a little while to see if you agree with the decision?! This evening we’ve got to play catch up and have the first few to do, and you can keep tabs on the MOTM recipients on page 25. Last thing from me this afternoon, ‘lest we forget’ this remembrance weekend.

Cheers,Greenie

NEXT: HAMPTON &

RICHMONDHaving faced eleven of the top twelve in the Ryman Premier League after today’s game, it has certainly been a baptism of fire for the Mead since promotion in May.

Results have been difficult to swallow at times, but knowing that the level of opposition has been high will provide some degree comfort for Keith McMahon and the side that they can compete having come close so often.

Next time out here at the SCT, the Mead take on Hampton & Richmond Borough in a game against a side that, like the Mead, have struggled so far this season.

Whilst the Beavers have been enjoying some more positive form in recent weeks, picking up eight points from the last twelve, they remain on the fringes of the bottom three.

However, this is due in large part to their slow start to the campaign and, away from the league, the Beavers have also been making some strides

in the FA Trophy so far - helping to build confidence and momentum throughout the side.

Indeed, across all competitions, Darren Powell’s side have lost merely twice in their last fourteen outings, and the man appointed back in April to take charge at the Beveree Stadium admitted that it should aid confidence.

“The boys have been playing some

good stuff,” he explained. “The cup results keep the unbeaten run going which means we should be full of confidence.”

The Beavers do face five successive away trips now though, starting at Canvey Island today, and it will be a chance for the side to really prove their new-found mettle and confirm whether or not they will continue on the path to recovery.
