FROM THE EDITOR...Welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead today for the final home game for Keith and the lads before Christmas - where has the time gone?!

Today’s fixture falls in the middle of a run of three successive home games for the Mead, following on from last Saturday’s 4-2 defeat at home to Leiston, who followed that with a thumping 5-2 win over Bognor Regis in midweek.

This afternoon’s visitors, Lowestoft, remain on the fringes of the play-offs and will be hoping to regain their form as 2013 draws to a close following a recent wobble, but here’s hoping that the Mead can pick up all three points today.

Next here is the visit of Cray Wanderers on Boxing Day which is a 1pm kick-off - we hope to see you there having enjoyed a lovely Christmas Day!

FROM THE CHAIRMAN:

TERRYHILL

Good afternoon everyone and, firstly, let me welcome the players and officials of Lowestoft Town to our new home here at Sporting Club Thamesmead.

Having been away on holiday recently, I’ve missed two games since my last set of notes - both trips to Lewes and Canvey Island.

We came away with two very respectable draws from both games though and, talking to Keith, we played very well at Lewes and were unlucky to only come away with a point.

Although I understand that Canvey wasn’t the best performance, we again came away with a creditable draw after finding ourselves two goals behind at the break.

In those circumstances, credit goes to Keith and the coaching staff for earning a response out of the players after a half-time talking to.

Last Saturday we were back at home as we took on Leiston, and a change of manager has certainly altered their fortunes as they came flying out of the blocks.

Again, though, we conceded a goal within five minutes of the kick-off and, again, on the half-hour mark after a rare

mistake from Rob Budd in goal.

Following an excellent run, Jay Porter pulled us a goal back but, immediately, our visitors replied to take a 3-1 lead into the break with them.

I thought Leiston played some very good football before the break, but we played much better in the second half and, perhaps if we had played that way from the beginning, we could have enjoyed a different result.

Junior Baker grabbed us a consolation goal late on but it finished 4-2. In fairness, we were missing both Tyrus Gordon-Young and Danny Phillips

through suspension and a failed fitness test, respectively, and both players help to offer us a bigger attacking threat.

On to today’s game against Lowestoft who are sitting nicely in eighth place and looking upwards towards a promotion push.

Despite that, the Trawlerboys also lost 3-0 at home last week to Hampton & Richmond so, like us, they will also be hoping to bounce back this afternoon - it promises to be another good game of football.

Enjoy the game,Terry

“We came away with two very respectable draws from two away games & it could

easily have been more than that”

FROM THE DUGOUT:

KEITHMcMAHON“We are fighting for our lives & every game must be treated as a cup final, but I know

these players will fight for the club”

Good afternoon and welcome back for today’s game against Lowestoft Town, and welcome to the management and players - I hope you enjoy your short stay here and I hope you have a safe journey home afterwards.

Last Saturday saw our little unbeaten run come to an end with a disappointing 4-2 defeat at home to Leiston.

I was upset with our first half performance as I felt we didn’t really get going and Leiston deserved to race into their 3-0 lead.

We were our own downfall as some poor defending led to the goals, but we did manage to get a lifeline back into the game through a good goal from young Jay Porter and we went in at half-time 3-1 down.

I had a few stern words at half-time as I didn’t think we were anywhere near the game plan and, in my eyes, that is why we were so bad.

The second half saw a better performance from us though and, for the first twenty minutes, we were on top.

If we could have scored then I think it would have been a different game, but

we got punished on the break through some more sloppy play and Leiston put the game to bed.

We did manage to score a consolation goal through Junior Baker but it was all too late.

I was disappointed after the game as I thought we didn’t show any of the quality or fight that we had shown in our last six games and, worse of all, it was the game we needed to show it in more than any other.

Leiston were within touching distance from us and a win would have put us in a good position, but in this league there are no bad teams and, to give credit to them, I thought they were a decent side, especially going forward.

We now have to go back to the drawing board and start again.

I’m not panicking as we have done ever so well in the last few months and we are going to have some ups and downs, but that result hopefully has given the lads the kick up the backside they need - we now need to bounce back and get some points on the board.

We have some big games coming up over Christmas when we host Cray Wanderers here before travelling to

Met Police within two days. Both teams are around us in the table, so they will both be big games and games we need to get something out of.

Today’s game is again going to be another tough game for us. We travelled to Lowestoft in the first week of the season on a Tuesday night and got hammered 5-0 but, admittedly, we did have a completely different squad to what we have now.

I’m not making any excuses, though - Lowestoft’s first twenty minutes blew us away that night and we found ourselves 4-0 down before we could realise!

We did have a little go in the second half but they were miles the better side.

So today will be a good guide to see how far we have improved and it’s a game we need to show character in if we are going to get something from.

We are fighting for our lives in the division so every game must be treated as a cup final. But I know I have the players that will fight for the club and each other and I’m still positive we can climb out of the bottom four and stay up this season.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

FROM THE BOARDROOM:

PAULBOWDEN-BROWN

“Fingers crossed, once new visitors have been to the SCT they will become a regular

supporter of the club on matchdays”

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters of Lowestoft to the SCT and a safe journey home after an enjoyable game and refreshments.

Last Saturday we had endeavoured to continue the good run the side had put together, as they collected points from teams well above us.

Unfortunately, we came up against a strong Leiston side who were giving their all for a recently-appointed manager, as well as a number of new players - they certainly didn’t look like their league position suggested!

Whatever the score, had it not been for two silly and unfortunate mistakes it could have been a draw, and all of the boys gave their all until the final whistle.

Remember that, although sometimes what is wanted on the field isn’t achieved, that will happen to every team sometimes and the big question is how the players then react to that instead.

Although our home crowds have increased recently since last season, it does appear to be due to the increased away support visiting for the first time.

It has to be said that, if we are to continue to support the growth of the club, we must have the support of the local community to come and back their local side.

We are, of course, extremely appreciative of all of the support that we have, both from families and businesses, but if we can further that support then we will also be able to match Keith’s wage bill to the standards we

are looking for on the field.

To this end, I know we have a lot of work to do before this, but right on our doorstep we have a thriving youth setup with between 50-80 parents and supporters watching the junior teams in our club’s colours.

Surely this can’t be right that there are more in attendance than at the first team games? Why do they not get involved and support the senior side on a matchday?

These are questions we have to resolve - let’s remember, we’re a community team and the mainstay of our work is carried out within the local schools by our managers and coaches, despite having a semi-professional senior team.

I personally feel adamant that we must bring this youth support onside, together the local community, to ensure that parents bring their children to support their senior

football team.

We’re contemplating giving all junior team parents a free pass to a couple of matches where they can bring their children to both watch the game and experience the facilities here - you don’t have to be a sportsman to enjoy the facilities.

Fingers crossed, once they have visited the SCT (which has been built for the user of the community), they can becomea regular supporter of the club and join us all within the Mead Lounge on a matchday.

On the other end of this shortfall, I also feel that we ought to offer this option to all of the local residents living around the ground, so we hope to carry this out before Christmas.

Now let’s enjoy the game!

LOWESTOFT“Despite holding lofty ambitions for the season with a

play-off push on the cards, the Trawley Boys have struggled for consistency in recent weeks - currently three without a win”

Another tricky test promises to be on the cards this afternoon as the Mead welcome Lowestoft to Sporting Club Thamesmead.

The Suffolk-based side put five goals past Keith McMahon’s team in the opening week of the season, and have enjoyed a similarly successful campaign - currently sitting on the fringes of the play-offs.

Whilst Keith’s side will be looking to revenge the Trawler Boys for that early-season defeat, Micky Chapman’s men will be hoping to go one better than last season when they finished in second place in their bid for promotion.

Despite holding lofty ambitions, the side have struggled for consistency in

recent weeks - with a run of five wins in seven being followed by three without a win heading into today’s fixture.

However, whilst that might provide some optimism for the Mead, Town defender Sam Gaughran insists that the consistency will come for the Trawler Boys to contend at the right end of the table.

“We’ve got too good of a squad not to be up there,” he explained. “We just need to go on a run and we know if we do that we will be right up there.

“We need to make sure we get the mentality right for every single game - the consistency will come.

“We’ve got to start picking up points against the teams below us.”

Lowestoft Town have a fine history stretching back well over 100 years. The club is first recorded as East Suffolk F C with games, all friendlies in those days, recorded back in 1884. On merging with the original Kirkley club the title of Lowestoft was adopted in 1887 with ‘Town’ added in 1890.

When the Norfolk & Suffolk League was formed in 1897, providing the first inter-county competitive matches, Lowestoft dominated, winning the title 6 times in the first 7 years.

The ‘odd’ season out 1899-1900 saw Lowestoft’s attentions turn to the F Amateur Cup with victories over such famous names as Leytonstone (9-0), and Gt Marlow (1-0) on the way to the final which brought a 1-5 defeat by Bishop Auckland at Leicester.

In 1904 Lowestoft had to appear before a F A Commission to answer charges of professionalism after a testimonial had raised just under £5 for player Fred Timoney who was about to emigrate. Norwich City who had ‘poached’ 4 of Lowestoft’s successful side amongst others were also called before the commission.

Whilst City accepted the ruling and formally adopted professionalism to start on the road that has seen them up amongst the top clubs in the country, Lowestoft paid a restitution of 2 guineas to regain amateur status.

In 1925 came the decision to adopt the blue and white colours that have served them so well since.

Lowestoft became founder members of the Eastern Counties League in 1935 but before starting out on this new challenge once again merged with local rivals Kirkley. The move proved a wise one with the first season seeing them sharing the title with Harwich & Parkston and then winning it outright 2 years later.

Lowestoft, who with Gt Yarmouth were the only sides with unbroken membership of the Eastern Counties League, took the bold step of becoming semi-professional in 1962. & 7 ECL titles and twice runners

up in the following 9 seasons is clear testimony to the manner in which they dominated in those years.

The ECL title was again won in 1977/8. The 1980s saw a decline in the club’s fortunes as crowds and income dropped.

The unique club pavilion, originally the Yacht Club before being taken down and moved from the harbour to the Crown Meadow in 1902, was gradually falling into disrepair and the floodlighting system installed in 1964 was coming to the end of its lifespan. The floodlights were updated in 1986 and the new dressing room complex occupied in 1989 and at last attention could be paid to playing matters.

As playing fortunes declined a 19 year old local lad signed for the club in 1980 who was to figure prominently in the affairs of the club for the next 20 and hopefully many more years.

Micky Chapman soon became a favourite with his all action style, eye for the goal, long flowing hair and a genuine desire to bring success back to the club. 5 ‘Player of the Year’ trophies adorn his display cabinet as testimony to the respect he has earned from supporters and players alike.

The 1990s saw Micky progress from captain to assistant manager and finally manager in 1994.A persistent back injury forced Mick to hang up his boots in 1997 allowing him to concentrate fully on the managerial side.

With the unwavering support of successive chairmen Mick had been able to improve the side year by year. In February 2012 he took charge of his 1000th game as Lowestoft manager. A unique achievement which he is keen to extend even further.

After several years in the doldrums the 21st century has seen Micky team up with Ady Gallagher to bring a return to trophy winning days with the Ridgeons League title won twice, the League Cup collected twice and the Suffolk Premier Cup brought back to the Meadow five times.

The culmination of all that recent success

came in May 2008 when joint managers Micky Chapman and Ady Gallagher proudly led their squad out onto the hallowed Wembley pitch in the F A Carlsberg Vase final.

On a blazing hot Sunday afternoon in front of over 14,000 Lowestoft supporters, the Blues were in the lead for three quarters of the game before conceding a last minute goal to lose out to Kirkham & Wesham by the odd goal of three.

Season 2008-2009 saw the first team win a League and County Cup double, as well as reach the semi final of the F A Carlsberg Vase and the season ended with promotion to the Ryman League Division One North and Step 4 football for the first time in the club’s history.

Success continued unabated in 2009/10 with back to back promotions seeing the Blues soar to the Ryman Premier Division at the first attempt achieving a century of points and goals for the second consecutive season.

An excellent F A Cup run saw the first round proper reached with the run ended at Wrexham by a cruel deflected goal in the final minutes.

The first season in the Ryman Premier Division saw the Trawlerboys involved in the promotion race right to the end.

There was just 9 minutes of the season left when Tonbridge Angels scored the goal that gave them a 3-4 victory and ended Lowestoft’s hopes of a third successive promotion.

It was a similar story in 2011-2012 when despite doubling champions Billericay Town Lowestoft fell at the final hurdle in the play off final losing to a last minute extra time goal away to AFC Hornchurch.

2012-2013 saw the highest ever league position of 2nd reached but hopes that it would be 3rd time lucky when they reached the play off final for the 3rd consecutive year were dashed as Concord Rangers scored a late winner to deny them that elusive prize of promotion to the Conference set up.

THE TREATMENT ROOM:

BEHIND THEGREEN DOOR

“We were poor last week, but Leiston battered Bognor Regis this week who are

the best side I’ve seen this season”

THE PHYSIO

I can honestly say that we weren’t the best last Saturday in the 4-2 defeat here against Leiston.

We let everyone down and the gaffer and all of the boys knew that, in no uncertain terms.

However, that now has to become water under the bridge so that we can go again this afternoon and, fingers crossed, it proves to be a bit of a wake up call after the good run that we had been on.

On Saturday we were without both Adem Ramadan and Danny Phillips - Danny has been suffering from an

infection in one of his feet, whilst Adem is still recovering from a bad tackle he suffered in one of our youth games.

All being well though, both of them will hopefully be back soon for Keith to select from on a matchday.

All of the new lads have now settled into the way that the gaffer wants them to play, which can only bode well for us as we move into the second half of the campaig.

Let’s just hope that last weekend was merely a blip and that fantastic work ethic we have become familiar with over recent weeks can return as we

take on Lowestoft this afternoon.

That said, Bognor Regis were the best team that I have seen in the division this season and, having beaten us last week, Leiston went and battered them in midweek 5-2 - so it does just show how things can change!

Enjoy the game this afternoon, cheer on the Mead and we’ll see you back here next weekend.

Fingers crossed that there are no new additions to the Green Room from this afternoon’s game!

The early rounds of the FA Trophy proper are never an easy sell; not for fans who contemplate Christmas shopping, managers who play weakened sides and nor for reporters, I have to confess.

You scan the draw for a game where a lower level team going well in their own division are at home to a higher level opponent, preferably within easy travelling distance of home.

Bury Town of the top half of the Ryman Premier at home to Skrill South title favourites Eastleigh measured up for me.

But even then I found myself competing with the festivities, as a pre-match visit to the Blues’ website told me the huge car park adjacent to Ram Meadow, that I’d found so useful when I used to go and play there with Ware, would be rammed because of the Suffolk town’s Christmas Fayre.

A sign of big players being rested came just before kick-off with Ian Miller, the Cambridge United captain, pushing his son Hudson’s buggy around the perimeter of his old club’s pitch, enjoying a weekend off while his Abbey team-mates did battle, successfully, at Salisbury.

By half-time of our game, the chance of

an upset had gone with Ben Strevens doing what he’s done brilliantly for more than a decade at Barnet, Crawley, Dagenham & Redbridge, Brentford, Wycombe and Gillingham by netting twice to start the’ flight into round two.

So what about my headline?

Step forward Craig McAllister, another veteran of the Non-League and lower Football League circuit, now back with his first club after serving the likes of Basingstoke – where I first came up against him as a player – Stevenage, Woking, Grays, Exeter, Crawley, Newport and Luton with distinction.

As he made his way off the pitch after the pre-match warm-up, I said hello and asked how he was?

“Great thanks mate – missus gave birth to our second at two o’clock this morning, didn’t she?” came the reply as he made his way down the tunnel.

With that chat in mind as he came on as a half-time sub, I pondered a goal from the striker who’d been up all night holding the mother of his baby’s hand, cuddled the new arrival and maybe grabbed half-an-hour’s sleep on the coach before celebrating how he knows best.

Sure enough, the 33-year-old buried

Bury further with a close-range header 11 minutes after joining the action.

Afterwards, it got better. Manager Richard Hill told me that he and eight of the players who’d had furthest to travel spent the Friday night in a Stansted hotel.

“I offered to drive Macca back to Southampton in the early hours, but he wanted to play,” said Hill.

McAllister, whose fiancée Linzi is the daughter of former Tiverton Town manager, and current Taunton assistant, Martyn Rogers, explained further.

“I can’t wait to get back and see the little man,” he said. “It’s a proud day but I had a job to do here, and having been around football all her life, Linzi understands. Hopefully she still will when I go to watch Tottenham-Man United with her old man tomorrow!”

I’m not sure my wife would have let me get away with it when our two were due. But at a time of year when we celebrate birth, I was doing a jig of joy at little Charlie McAllister’s arrival.

‘Classy Craig Is The Daddy’ was the headline gift-wrapped for me by his dad’s devotion... to the beautiful game and the FA Trophy first round!

Spot-fixing, three years ago found to be rife in cricket, now rears it’s loathsome, if looming, head in football. On the face of it, it seems unthinkable that anyone can profit in such vast sums on matters so trivial in any game, no matter what the level.

Walk into your local bookmakers and attempt to place a four, even five, figure sum on the recipient of the first throw in, corner or booking in a Football League or non-league game, the wager would not be accepted. The cashier would refuse having had their suspicion well and truly aroused, if you’ll excuse the unfortunate phrasing.

Writing this column ahead of a return to a full programme of Football League fixtures today, browsing the average betting website, I found in excess of 100 markets available for each Championship match this weekend.

One hundred, ranging from outrights and the ever popular goalscorer coupons to first throw in and total number of throw ins and odds on individual players picking up a card.

The vast majority of markets are just and legitimate, a means for the considered football fan to inject a modicum of extra excitement atop their weekly pilgrimage. Form dictates selection for most – a striker on a hot streak, a mean defence, or a team with a knack for dramatic late goals – but others have no basis of analysis.

An early boot of the ball into touch or an unjustifiable, rush of blood to the head type late challenge remains solely at the discretion of an individual.

Is it new? No, Matt Le Tissier, in his Taking Le Tiss autobiography, admitted to trying to concede an early throw in while playing for Southampton against Wimbledon in 1995. Remarkably, for a man of his ability, he miscued his effort and it stayed in play.

“Obviously I’d never have done anything that might have affected the outcome of the match, but I couldn’t see a problem with making a few quid on the time of the first throw-in,” he recalled.

The very option of placing a bet on a booking, or concession of a corner or throw in invites suspicion. These outcomes are at the folly of men with the ability to affect them and often, the financial reward on offer far outweighs any risk of getting caught. An undercover newspaper reporter, in exposing a few, is only the tip of a widespread and potentially devastating iceberg.

Why so devastating? If British punters can’t benefit from fixed elements of a game, who does? Asian betting syndicates operate in vast, unregulated markets, so we’re told. In an age of the global game and with all four Premier and Football Leagues piped around the world going into 2014, it’s little wonder international exploitation of the game is a viable enterprise.

Are fans being cheated? Of course they are. The relationship between players and supporters is as distant as ever, don’t let the advent of Twitter fool you. To think fans are paying to see certain players illegally supplement their incomes while in turn undermining the integrity of the game is sickening.

Harmless? No chance. Most hurtful to football is that it’s been allowed to go this far with little or no deterrent.

MATCH REPORT:

ACTION REPLAY

The Mead’s unbeaten run was blown away by a Leiston side who belied their lowly position and made ten goals scored in two games last Saturday, as they raced into a 42 minute three goal lead from which we never recovered.

But testament to the Mead’s much improved resolve that they recovered somewhat in the second half, but it was still of little comfort to the Gaffer who had seen his side’s form improve dramatically over the course of the last few week.

The visitors started with a fast tempo that we just couldn’t live with as Leiston raced into the lead after just four minutes, and that was after keeper Rob Budd produced a great save to deny Craig Parker in the opening minute.

A corner was played into the home box and Leon Ottley-Gooch turned quickly in the box and drilled the ball beyond Buddy and into the roof of the net.

Parker then had two golden opportunities to extend the lead - he was first denied by another great Buddy save as the visitors broke before disappointingly he fired into the Car

Park after being well placed.

Leiston did double their lead just before the half hour as an horrendous defensive mistake left Ottley-Gooch with the simple task of walking round a distraught Budd and walk the ball into the empty net.

The goal of the game then put the contest completely out of the home side’s reach with the goal of the game as following a fine run and pin point perfect cross by Joe Francis was met by Rhys Henry’s thumping header that would have taken two keepers to keep out three minutes before half time.

Full credit though to the boys as they bounced back within a minute and were on the board as Jay Porter finally got a bounce that was favourable as he burst into the box and drilled the ball beyond the reach of keeper Danny Gay and into the corner of the net.

It was vital then that the first goal of the second half be scored by the home side, yet as they piled forward the final ball just wasn’t there and as a result the Mead suffered the classic sucker punch.

Dispossessed on half way, Leiston piled forward and from Parker’s square ball and Francis’ cross, Gareth Heath ghosted in to glance the ball wide of Buddy and into the net and that sadly for the home side was effectively that. The boys kept plugging away and Theo Fairweather-Johnson was twice then denied by Gay - the second being a brilliant save away to his left, and from the resulting corner sub Richard Butler thundered the ball against the Leiston bar.

Thamesmead got some reward when Junior Baker bundled home after Theo’s shot had been blocked again by Gay, but it was too little too late.

SODJE-GATEWhen the latest match fixing scandal hit the headlines last weekend - centred on Sam Sodje and his claims to a Sun on Sunday reporter that he could get players booked or sent off if the price is right - our national game drew a collective breath as if to say that it couldn’t happen.

In case you missed it, Sodje was sent off whilst playing in a game for Portsmouth at Oldham for hitting home player Jose Baxter - actions that the national press described as “crazy” at the time - and he now claims he was paid up to £70,000 for taking the sending off.

Sodje’s Football League career was duly listed to include Brentford, Notts County and Portsmouth, but how many remember that Sodje once called Kent home?

It was Margate to be precise, during the period that the Gate were ground sharing at Crabble and it was at Dover’s ground that Sodje scored on his debut.

All throughout his two season stay, he came across as extremely popular with fans and team mates alike, which is just another reason why his involvement in these latest allegations is so mind blowing to those who knew him, especially to the man who signed him - the current Dover Athletic boss, Chris Kinnear.

Speaking to the Kent Sports News website after his side’s 0-2 defeat against Bromley at Crabble on Tuesday night, Kinnear was clearly shaken when asked about Sodje’s involvement.

He told KSN of his bewilderment with the news - a feeling that you sense still hasn’t quite registered now nearly a week after the story first appeared. Kinnear said: “I can’t really still understand it. He was a great person really, just like his brothers - him, Steve and Akpo - all three of them have played for me at some stage.

“I know them very well - Sam has the same birthday as my son Chris and has phoned up to wish him a Happy Birthday, but you never know. I would never have thought the three of them would be implicated, but there you go!” With Sodje-gate now shadowing over our national game, Kinnear denied that these illegal payments will put more pressure on non-league managers and hierarchy.

The Dover boss continued: “I would like to think that if any of my players did it I would be able to pick it up and what they’re doing. But in the case it obviously wasn’t picked up.

“I’m not any better than anyone else at picking up something like that but, let’s be honest, if someone wanted

to be corrupt they will be. There’s corrupt people in every walk of life and that’s just the way it is - you cant just blame footballers for it.

“It’s shocking and terrible as I cant understand how someone could even think about doing it, or how for that matter they even go about it, but obviously something’s happening and it must be stopped straight away whilst we’ve still got a game to protect.” And it is those sentiments that must at all times be remembered - we have still got a great game to protect, and must do everything in our collective power to do so.

But when your see top players earning over £100,000 a week, whilst totally inexcusable, you can see why players who play for a fraction of that (if at all) would be tempted for a one-off payment for doing something that could pass as simply a little odd. Sodje and the other five who have been arrested for investigation have dragged the name of football through to the very limit of bringing the game into disrepute, and they must not be allowed to do it again!

But that then opens the frightening questions that we don’t want to ask - are there other scams still going on? And is this just the tip of arguably the most dangerous iceberg that our sport has ever faced?

Following the damaging allegations about our national game this week,

MIKE GREEN looks into the background that links Sam Sodje to Kent

RYMAN LEAGUE ROUND-UP

LEAGUE ROUND-UP:

RYMAN REVIEW

Lewes coach Dean Lightwood has written himself into the history books at the Ryman Premier’s Rooks by proving the old adage that age doesn’t count for keepers!

Lightwood made 48 appearances for Lewes in the mid-nineties and was back in goal again for them last week, stepping in as an emergency keeper in their 3-2 Robert Dyas League Cup win over Ryman South Redhill.

With the third round tie level at 2-2 and heading into half-time, the 41-year-old was called up following an injury to young keeper Dan Hutchins who was making his Rooks debut.

Lightwood, who’s also coached academy youngsters at Brighton and Charlton and made over 100appearances for Eastbourne Borough, last played for Lewes on the 8 November 1994 in a 1-0 defeat to Leighton Town in a Diadora League Three game, meaning the gap between appearances was a remarkable and club record setting 6,966 days!

Like Dino Zoff, Peter Shilton and a host of high-profile keepers over the years,

Lightwood had no problem rolling back the years despite his lack of match practice, keeping a clean sheet to terrace chants of ‘Super Deano’ as the Rooks went through thanks to Nathan Crabb’s winner midway through the second period.

The first ever book documenting the history of Ryman Premier East Thurrock United has gone on sale.

Written by one of the club’s founder members and former Rocks Secretary Terry Keating, the book went on sale on Saturday at Rookery Hill and offers a full and detailed account of the club’s history and heroes since its foundation in 1969.

Running to more than 350 pages and using almost 200 historic photographs, Keating’s tome tells the story of how the Rocks evolved from a kick-a-bout Sunday morning side into a thriving senior Non-League club representing Corringham, Stanford le Hope and the surrounding area.

Priced at £10, the book can be purchased online at: www.eastthurrockhistory.co.uk.

Another big thank you to the Cooper family for their ongoing sponsorship of the home Man of the Match award - the winner from the Leiston home game last weekend was Jay Porter, who received his prize in the Mead Lounge after the game, but who will get it this evening? Stay for the presentation in the Mead Lounge at around 5.15pm! Finally from me this afternoon, on behalf of all the directors, officials, and the players here at TTFC, a very Merry Christmas to you all and we’ll see you on Boxing Day for our home game with Cray Wanderers. 34 The Mead v Leiston

NEXT AT THE SCT:

CRAY WAND.The Mead are currently on a run of three successive home games, with the third and final one of those coming next time as we welcome Cray Wanderers to Sporting Club Thamesmead for the Boxing Day fixture.

Time really has flown by and, with the campaign now at the half-way mark after today’s game for Keith’s side, the countdown is on the quest for survival - and the games don’t get much bigger for the Mead than next up.

With Cray languishing at the foot of the Ryman Premier League table, the Mead will surely sense an opportunity to pick up maximum points here at Sporting Club Thamesmead to remain within touching distance of safety - particularly with twentieth-placed Met Police providing the opposition just two days later.

Cray have struggled for form this season, ending up on the losing side in fifteen of their twenty league games, but the Wands’ assistant manager, Mike

Paye, believes that the side have been capable of playing good football this season.

“We’ve been playing some good football in the last few games but we just wasn’t getting the run of the ball at the right times,” he said.

And, having taken over the reigns alongside Keith Bird at the end of

September, he believes the players are finding their feet in their new system.

“When we came in we cleared 30-40 players and we’ve had a real shake up.

“It’s very been very difficult to try and get the right calibre of players but we’re starting to get them in and the boys are starting to play to the systems that we want now.”
