Project: Toro Creek watershed rehabilitation and redesign

Location: Morro Bay, California

Subject: Natural Environments Focus Studio

Design breakdown: The design is aimed to remediate contaminated water flowing through the site by directing it through a series of phytoremediation ponds before meeting with the creek. The design concept focuses on transitions. Transitioning from a contaminated site to a remediated one, and transitioning from homelessness back to society. “The Collective” would house a number of the homeless com-munity with the intent of properly transitioning back into society. Ac-cordingly, the facility will be partially open to the community to enjoy the natural aspects of the site and to purchase goods at the farmers’ market from the on-site farm. The design respects the environment by establishing sustainable farming practices, utilizing renewable energy, and remediating any contaminants in the soil through sus-tainable in-situ processes, all while showing these processes to the public by means of a boardwalk that meanders through the site.

What I learned: The main goal of this project was to deal with the contaminated land. I learned about different ways to remediate con-taminated soils and groundwater through in-situ and ex-situ process-es, specifically focusing on bioremediation and phytoremediation. I learned about agriculture and farming practices, specifically research-ing hydroponic vertical farms, as I wanted to design a community farm where the product was produced and sold on the same site.

Project: Large residential reuse and rebranding

Location: San Luis obispo County

Subject: Project Implementation Focus Studio

Design breakdown: A re-use design proposal for a forgot-ten dairy farm in which the clients wanted a space to call their own along with a venue space to entertain. The chal-lenge was to keep the historical value of the site while simultaneously creating a new sense of place. To rebrand the site, I designed new signage for the entrance creating a rustic yet modern feel, to intertwine the old with the new. The design also focused on entertaining, specifically for wedding parties per the client’s wishes.

What I learned: Planting schemes, construction docu-mentation, and technical details were all apart of this focus studio. I learned to use SketchUp to create technical details. I learned to create an organized construction document packet.

Project: Residential design

Location: San Jose, Costa Rica

Subject: Internship

Design breakdown: This was a detailed planting and hard-scape design proposal with a concept of flowing curves and differing heights of mounds and plants to create a relaxing oasis with a tropical flair. I chose plants that fit the color scheme of purples and greens, and added areas of white gravel to make those colors stand out. I paid close attention to views from the very open and modern architecture of the home, and I designed to the desires of the clients, and being in Central America, a priority for the clients included a soccer field. With such a large plot of backyard space to design, I created different spaces throughout including a deck area, a fire pit, a sand pit and play area for the children, a secluded seating area, and a large gathering space to entertain, watch soccer, and eat.

What I learned: I paid close attention to plant choices for this design and learned a lot about planting design, specifically colors, sizes and placement of plants. I also had to research plants that were available and grew well in the area.

Migration in Mission valleyFoRMER qUARRy BECoMES A PLACE FoR BIRDS AND PEoPLE

Project: Reuse design for an abandoned rock quarry

Location: San Diego, California

Subject: Digital Media Communications & Design Studio

Design breakdown: Because the old rock quarry is located in a valley where birds migrate through, this design focused on creating a recre-ational space not only for people but also for the birds. This way, people can migrate through the site and are able to pause and bird watch from watch towers that are designed not to intimidate birds from getting close. The design has a strong axial symmetry with all paths leading to an orchard at one end of the site.

What I learned: I researched ways to design for birds and applied that to this design. I also experimented with different graphic techniques such as creating a painted look with Photoshop or a conceptual perspective with layered images.

Project: Conceptual solution to move towards a new food system or lifestyle, involving growing our own food, knowing where our food comes from. and being empowered to create sustainable change and lead a productive lifestyle.

Subject: Senior Capstone Project

Design breakdown: I experimented, designed, and constructed a line of micro farm starter kits for the beginner farmers who want to join the local food movement. The Maker Farms are my solution to make urban farming simpler, cheaper, accessible, and needs based. The kits will be designed to be an all-inclusive, carefully curated package to help all sorts of amateur urban farmers start growing. The kits would aim to encourage future farmers, educate people about urban farming, empower people from all different back-grounds, allow access to healthy organic food, reestablish a con-nection with it, and in a way promote a new lifestyle where food matters. The themes for the kits are based off of the type of farmer the user may be. The kits are designed from the inside out, choos-ing what needs to be inside the package and even designing the packaging itself, keeping energy, sustainability, and the consumer in mind to design for sustainable change in the current food system. The kits are designed with the concept of D.I.y because if we want change, we must start by doing it ourselves.

What I learned: This project was very hands-on, building and test-ing different ways to grow food in an urban environment. I learned an extensive amount on hydroponic farming as I incorporated the growing method into the project kits. A huge portion of the project was graphic design and graphically portraying the concept in a way that really connects to the D.I.y theme. Because I created a whole face for this conceptual company, I learned about branding, logo design, infographics, product photography, digital illustration, and packaging design.
