Department of Landscape Courses 12 The University of She!eld

The University of She!eld was named University of the Year in the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards. The judges described it as a quality, research-led university, and a community with values, confidence, and flair.

What is Landscape Architecture?Landscape architecture is the planning, design and managment of places for people and nature; both special and everyday places. Landscape Architects design spaces between buildings that are imaginative yet functional. They also shape and design elements of natural and semi-natural landscapes to help restore ecological processes and enable people in cities to engage with nature. Every public environment in the UK has had some element of design: whether it is a local park, a school playground, a green space between o!ces or a National Park like the Peak District. They have all been influenced by a landscape architect.

To be a Landscape Architect requires artistic flair, a passion for improving environmental quality and people’s lives, and an ability to fuse diverse knowledge to produce inventive yet workable solutions. This requires the ability to blend applied geography and arts with social science and the built environment.

Our students are highly sought after within the Landscape profession. At She!eld, we aim to develop graduates with outstanding skills, who will be able to take key roles in multidisciplinary projects with an underlying commitment to care for the landscape and the people who live within it. This fusion of attributes ensures that you will be highly employable, ready for professional practice and a committed lifelong learner.

As a She!eld Graduate you develop a proficiency in design, and understand the cultural, social and ecological drivers that underpin successful landscapes. Our courses equip students with excellent transferable skills, which are also highly relevant beyond the landscape profession. Through working in teams, solving complex problems, undertaking live projects for community groups, and developing your own personal portfolio you will acquire professional standards

in communication, graphic design, report writing and verbal presentation. Skills that will allow you to become adept at presenting your ideas and visions in a coherent and highly-e"ective manner.

You will also gain an aptitude for combining your creative skills with research and analytical capabilities. Our teaching strategies encourage you to think independently and develop innovative and imaginative solutions to the complex issues concerning landscape design. Indeed, because we provide a robust education covering key elements of design, art, social science and natural science, you will have a comprehensive understanding of the landscape, and retain a critical but open mind to how environments could be developed in the future.

Graduates from the Department of Landscape work in the private sector where many have set up their own companies. Others work in the public or Third sectors, helping to improve local communities. A number of graduates have gone on to become consultants – advising Governments on how landscapes should be designed and managed, for example, setting up new National Parks. Some have achieved the highest levels of recognition, for example President of the Landscape Institute (UK) or President of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA). In the recent National Student Survey the Department of Landscape achieved the highest UK graduate employment rate of 90% for all UK Landscape Design courses. Many of our alumni now run their own national and international practices, it is not uncommon for them to come back to She!eld to recruit new sta" for their firms.

Studying Landscape at She!eldThe Department of Landscape at the University of She!eld is the leading university to study Landscape Architecture in the UK. We are the largest academic institution in our field and o"er research and taught courses with an international reputation spanning arts, design, social sciences, geography, planning, ecology and management.

Come to the Department of Landscape and you will be joining one of the world’s leading departments for landscape education and research. Our sta" are involved in some of the most exciting contemporary landscape design projects through their practice and consultancy and they are strongly committed to excellence in research and practice led teaching.

In the recent assessment of the quality of research output (RAE 2008), the Department received the top rating of all Landscape schools in UK Universities.

Your CourseAll our undergraduate courses are fully accredited by the Landscape Institute, the Royal Chartered Body for Landscape Architects in the United Kingdom.

You will work alongside leading researchers and practitioners who have a range of academic and professional backgrounds. There are 16 academic sta" and over 20 associate tutors who deliver courses to approximately 200 undergraduate and 150 postgraduate students. International practitioners and leading thinkers regularly contribute to your learning experience through guest lectures and invited talks.

We pride ourselves on innovative teaching and learning approaches. You will be based in the recently refurbished listed building, The Arts Tower, which is fully equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The studio is at the heart of your learning and is the space where you and your year group will participate in workshops, small group seminars, group and individual tutorials and project reviews. The studio is where you will informally share ideas with your fellow students, engage in group work and importantly learn from one another. Traditional lectures, supported by library and internet resources, also play a vital role in developing knowledge in landscape theory and practice.

We attract highly motivated and enthusiastic students who thrive on the challenge of a creative discipline that overlaps the world of science and art, large-scale planning and detailed design. Landscape Architecture is challenging and requires commitment on your part to reflect on your own ideas, carry out independent research and share and adapt your ideas. Academic and studio tutors will work with you to help develop your knowledge and skills and direct your learning. Students and sta" work together in the process of exploring and testing ideas.

The Department has a strong commitment to research-led teaching, ensuring that new knowledge is developed through research and continuously feeds into lectures, seminars and studio teaching at all levels. Field trips and site visits are an essential component of your learning and an integral part of many modules. The international fieldtrip, at the start of the third year is an inspiring opportunity for you to research, explore and analyse exciting examples of Landscape Architecture, and is also an important and memorable social event.

We o"er opportunities to study abroad through exchange programmes with several leading European Landscape Schools (in Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden) and world-class institutions in Japan and the US.

Your Personal DevelopmentThe Department of Landscape has a thriving culture of extra-curricular activities and opportunities to become involved in the life and running of the Department. The student society ‘Landmark’ is run entirely by Department students who organise social events, guest speakers, site visits, and the annual Landscape Ball. There are regular chances to participate in voluntary design and landscape management projects with local community groups, and sta" are frequently engaged in ‘live’ projects which o"er chances to join real-world design, implementation and management activities. Department research projects also provide students with chances to help out with research activities on a voluntary basis.

The She!eld Landscape Graduate Award allows students to accumulate credits for activities that they contribute to outside their course. Training in Landscape Architecture o"ers you a wealth of valuable transferable skills, and you can formally recognise these with a Skills for Work certificate. In recent years student representatives have made important contributions to the Yorkshire branch of the Landscape Institute (LI), taken part in student design competitions, and have also attended conferences with other students from European landscape schools.

Course DetailsThe undergraduate landscape courses at She!eld are unique, combining training in Landscape Architecture with an opportunity to choose specialist modules in Ecology or Planning in your second and third year. The Department in conjunction with the School of Architecture also o"ers the only fully accredited dual degree in Architecture and Landscape. This is the only course in the country that integrates these two disciplines.

Course StructureThe undergraduate courses are ‘Integrated Masters’ programmes, in which students spend 3 years studying Landscape Architecture to gain a BA(Hons) or BSc(Hons) degree. If you decide to continue your training in Landscape Architecture you will spend your fourth year working in a Landscape practice before returning for the 5th year MLA course. This is a required stage for being a Chartered Landscape Architect with the Landscape Institute.

BA/BSc (Hons) Landscape ArchitectureSingle honours courses: UCAS code: BA K3K4 BSc KC39

BA/BSc(Hons) Landscape Architecture students will be taught together for all their modules in year 1 and the first semester of year 2. In the second and third year there will be 60 credits of specialist planning or ecology modules. All other modules will be taught jointly across the year group. Both courses are Landscape Institute Accredited when taken in conjunction with the MLA.

The BA(Hons) (UCAS code: K3K4) in Landscape Architecture with Planning aims to educate Landscape Architects who combine design skills with a sound understanding of urban design theory, planning and practice. If you enjoy subjects such as geography, politics, economics or history you will appreciate the scope and challenge of this course in addressing issues which examine the role of the environment in meeting the changing needs of individuals and societies. Students completing this course are in a strong position to appreciate the planning context in which design takes place and the wider implications of their landscape design proposals.

The BSc(Hons) (UCAS code: KC39) in Landscape Architecture with Ecology aims to educate Landscape Architects who have a more in-depth understanding of ecology and habitat creation. If you enjoy subjects related to biology or environmental sciences, or have a keen interest in the natural world, this course will equip you to combine a more detailed appreciation of ecological processes and how they work within the designed landscape. Through their specialist training in ecology graduates are able to assist in the restoration of degraded environments and also to understand the wider implications of design proposals on existing habitats.

BA(Hons) Architecture and Landscape Dual honours courses: UCAS code: KK13

This dual course explores ways in which architecture and landscape complement each other, with particular interests in developing sustainable solutions that respect the environment. Studio-based learning in both the School of Architecture and Department of Landscape will be supported by other taught courses that draw on the exceptional research bases of both departments. This course is Landscape Institute Accredited when taken in conjunction with the MLA).

The course is Landscape Institute and Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) accredited. Students may choose to complete this Masters Course in Landscape or Architecture department.

The School of Architecture is the home department for this course.

Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA)The MLA is the final year of our integrated undergraduate programme. It is also available to graduates of other universities who hold a good honours degree in a subject which has been accredited by the Landscape Institute, and who have completed at least a year of relevant professional experience.

Postgraduate CoursesPostgraduate students at She!eld benefit from innovative approaches to teaching and learning, delivered in a supportive environment, and have access to dedicated digital suites and technical and administrative support sta". Our student cohort is drawn from over 20 di"erent countries worldwide and we provide a unique programme enabling international students to rapidly acquire the language, study and subject-specific skills they need to get the best from our courses.

She!eld graduates are highly sought after by the landscape profession and can expect to receive very competitive entry level salary on completion of their studies.

Our Postgraduate courses lead to the qualifications of Postgraduate Diploma and Master of Arts (MA). The Diploma is achieved on successful completion of the taught modules, whilst the MA requires the completion of a dissertation.

Our Postgraduate courses comprise:

MA in Landscape Architecture/PG DiplomaThis is a two-year course, accredited by the Landscape Institute. This is a ‘conversion’ course for graduates of non-accredited subjects who want to practise as Landscape Architects in the UK or other IFLA member countries.

MA in Landscape Studies/PG DiplomaThis is a one-year course for graduates who want to acquire some knowledge of and competencies in landscape architecture. It is not a professionally accredited course. However, successful completion of the Diploma stage of this course can be used as a basis for entry into year two of the professionally accredited route.

MA in Landscape Management/PG DiplomaThis is a one-year full-time or two year part-time ‘conversion’ course for graduates of non-accredited subjects who want to practise as Landscape Architects, specialising in management. You will need a minimum of nine months’ relevant professional work experience in addition to your graduate qualification to enrol on this course. Once completed this diploma is recognised by the Landscape Institute and will count towards Chartership.

MA in Landscape ResearchThis is a one-year full time course that enables students to specialise in particular topics of interest to them within the fields of landscape design and landscape science through the research and writing of a substantive dissertation.

The Course is taught jointly with the Department of Town and Regional Planning.

Increasingly, PhD studies are required to complete Master´s level research training. This one-year course may be taken as a free-standing qualification by graduates who are particularly interested in a research career in Landscape or, more commonly, by students intending to proceed to a PhD.

Applying for a Landscape PhDProposals for research degrees can cover any landscape-related topic. Proposals can be submitted independently by students. However, Department sta" will have a range of graduate research projects that fit directly with their ongoing research programmes which students may wish to consider.
