Landscaping Trends in
2016: A Survey
Houzz, a popular online magazine for home design, conducted a survey on
the recent trends in landscaping projects. The magazine sent out the survey
to its readers, asking them about their past and future outdoor projects. In
February 2016, Houzz released the results of the survey. Below are some of
the survey’s key findings:
1. Low Maintenance and Unified Style
Forty-six percent of the participants say that their landscape design should
complement the current style of their house. Most of them note that
integrating their design with the neighborhood’s is the least of their worries.
Instead, they focus on the overall look of their property. Eighty percent of the
homeowners also say it is significant that the design of their lawn or back
yard is easy to maintain.
2. Backyard Updates With Structural Elements
Three out of four homeowners are adding structural elements to their
backyard. In fact, 43% of this group built a patio or terrace, 24% added a
gazebo or pergola, while 7% of them constructed a swimming pool or a hot
tub. Some of them also say that they updated their outdoor space with a
workshop, a deck, a greenhouse, and a playground.
3. Focus on the Lawn
Eighty percent of homeowners are updating their lawn in 2016,
compared to the 76% ratio of lawn upgrades recorded in 2015. In this
group, 42% are focusing on replanting, while 31% of them are
overhauling the whole lawn. Homeowners who are replanting prefer low-
maintenance plants, blossoming flowers, and drought-resistant plants.
4. Additional Outdoor Lighting
More than half of the homeowners will include outdoor lighting updates in
their landscaping projects. The majority of them prefer LED lighting in
their pathways, patios, lawn, driveways, and other outdoor areas.
Seventy-nine percent of these homeowners say outdoor lighting is for
décor purposes, while the remaining population of the group notes
comfort, safety, security, and curb appeal as other reasons for the
update.
5. Pet-Friendly Yard
Many homeowners consider their pets whenever they have
landscaping projects. Thirty-seven percent of pet owners made
outdoor upgrades to create a space for their pets to run and play,
while 25% replanted their garden or lawn with toxin-free plants and
22% built pet-friendly fences.
Apart from these trends, the survey also notes that 9 out of 10
homeowners spent or are planning to spend around $5,000 on minor
landscaping projects. On the other hand, 2 out of 5 homeowners spent
or are planning to spend $20,000 on larger outdoor remodeling
projects.
