Benchmark Curriculum: Early Elementary

A sentence is a group of words that express a complete thought.

Which example is not a sentence?-I went to the store to buy an apple.-My mother gave me a hug today.-Climb a tree.

YES! Climb a tree is not a sentence.

Why?-It does not express a complete thought. We wonder who climbed a tree? Where did they climb a tree? Why did they climb a tree?

-By adding more information we can make it a complete thought.

-The cat climbed the tree when she heard the dog bark.

REMEMBER!A sentence needs to:-Start with a capital letter-Have an end mark-Make sense

Subject and Predicate Simple and Compound sentences Click one to get started

The subject is the part of the sentence that is the main idea, or a noun.

Example: The snow is pilled up high outside. The cat ran up the tree.

The predicate tells what the subject is doing. It usually contains a verb in it.

Examples: The snow is pilled up high outside. The cat ran up the tree.

A simple sentence contains one subject and predicate.

Examples-Some students like to study in the mornings. -My car broke down this afternoon.-The students were playing tag at recess.

These sentences contain one subject and one predicate.

A compound sentence includes two simple sentences joined by a linking word. This word can be for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. Usually there is a comma to separate the two simple sentences.

Examples:-I went shopping, and my mom came with me. -It’s snowing outside, but it will melt soon.

Identify which sentences are compound sentences, and which are simple sentences.

-I went to the store with my mom, and we arrived home very late.

-My dad threw the football to Billy.-Some students don’t do their homework.-The teachers at school are nice, but some

give too much homework.

Now that we’ve learned what a sentence looks like, and the different parts to it, we can put those skills into practice by correcting sentences. Remember, a sentence needs to make sense, have an end mark, and start with a capital letter.
