STORAGE

Page 3: Language of the Lab

BEAKERS• Used for containing liquids.• Scale printed on the glass

is just an estimation---not accurate, and not used for measuring out precise amounts of liquids!

• Can be heated.

Page 4: Language of the Lab

• Used for storing liquids.• Narrow neck allows for easy

storage, it can be closed using either a cork or parafilm!

• NOT used for measuring! The amounts printed on the flask is highly inaccurate and only allows for the estimation of amounts!

ERLENMEYER FLASKS

Page 5: Language of the Lab

• Used to contain, mix, and store small amounts of liquids

• Not used for measurement of liquids

• Not accurate

TEST TUBES

Page 6: Language of the Lab

• Used to store and centrifuge very small amounts of liquids.

• Not used for measurement.

MICRO-CENTRIFUGE TUBES

MEASURMENT

Page 8: Language of the Lab

• Used for Measuring liquid amounts with an accuracy of a tenth of a mL.

• Good for relatively large amounts of liquids when precise accuracy is not needed!

GRADUATED CYLINDER

Page 9: Language of the Lab

• Allows for precise and accurate dispensing of solutions.

• Accurate to 1/100th of a mL• Used in titrations to evaluate

the PH of an unknown solution.

BURET

• Micropipettes—used to precisely dispense small amounts (microliters) of liquid.

• Pipettes—used to precisely dispense milliliters of a solution.

• Disposable Pipettes—used for transferring liquid, not accurate!

PIPETTES

TOOLS

Page 12: Language of the Lab

• Used to mix small amounts of liquid

• Must be balanced just like the large version used in chemistry

MICRO-CENTRIFUGE

• Hot Plate—Used to heat up solutions. Hard to maintain a specific temperature!

• Hot Water Bath—Used to heat up solutions at a precise and constant temperature!

HEATING

• Power Source used to run a consistent and known amount of voltage through a electrophoresis cell

• Gel Electrophoresis Cell—is used to separate molecules based on charge, size, and shape
