I have been a fan of Thorndike Press for twenty years and I have been working at Thorndike Press for twelve of those years. I joined Thorndike Press in 2004 as Publisher and General Manager and I have managed to stay close to the imprint ever since. I am currently VP & Publisher in the Gale Global Product Management Group where I oversee the Gale Series & Directories program along with Thorndike Press. Along with my two cats, I split my time between homes in Farmington Hills, Michigan and Hallowell, Maine. As you can imagine I love to read. I am so proud of the fact that Large Print is an entry point for so many readers.

Staff RecommendationThorndike Press wouldn’t be the leading Large Print publisher if it weren’t for our staff. We are passionate about what we do — which is providing the best overall experience we can for our customers and readers. Additionally, at Thorndike Press we put the “V” in voracious when it comes to reading and loving books!

Over the coming months, meet our staff and find out what we are reading and recommending! Enjoy and HAPPY READING!

Secret Sisters by Jayne Ann Krentz is the story of two childhood friends, Madeline and Daphne, who experienced a terrifying attack and have done their best to move on with their lives. Madeline runs a chain of luxury hotels and Daphne is a designer. But the secret that they share reunites them as adults and they journey back to a small island off the coast of Seattle, the site of their childhood trauma. Using Nancy Pearl’s Readers Advisory methodology, let me tell you about the doorways that I found most appealing. I was drawn to the character of Madeline, a successful career woman who struggles with intimacy and lost track of her childhood friend. So I plan to read Sweet Salt Air by Barbara Delinsky — the story of two childhood friends who reunite on an island off the coast of Maine. I was also fascinated with the setting of Secret Sisters — an island off the coast of Seattle — and I can’t wait to read Falling for June by Ryan Winfield. It’s an achingly beautiful love story set in Echo Glen, a secluded retreat outside of Seattle.

Did you know that Jayne Ann Krentz has an MLS from San Jose University? Before she began writing full time she worked as an academic and corporate librarian.

Join us to follow Tammy’s picks and read about her views on large print, collection development and other best practices.

Issues Facing Large Type Collections E-book popularity continues to soar and e-readers make adjusting the type face of a book very easy. Since the perception is that Large Type books are available months after the original date of publication some librarians might feel that Large Type isn’t necessary for their collections. We have come a long way in how quickly Large Type is now being published. Often Large Type books are being simultaneously published with regular type books. I think we also need to remember that not everyone likes reading in the e format. Even if they do like e-books they can often have hold lists just as long as a print book. Large Type is often a better option for a customer wanting a book quickly.

More about Tammy Tammy Niblett has been working in libraries since she was 18 years old. She started her career as the book shelver/clerk/librarian at the Social Work library at the Ohio State University and has never looked back. She is currently a Librarian working in the Acquisitions Department at the IMLS award-winning Los Angeles Public Library.
