TRANSCRIPT
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our Year 6 students are overseas this week for the Year 6 study tour to Singapore. The students
are excited and enjoying a wonderful learning experience which includes visiting our sister
school, Avondale Grammar School. Last week I observed a great Skype session between
students from both schools and it was interesting to hear what students want to know about
each other’s school and country.
Larrakeyah Primary, Darwin Middle and Darwin High are Independent Public Schools working
together to develop a more seamless transition for students between the different stages of
schooling. Small groups of students from each school have been working together this term on
programs that flow between the schools – Chinese, ICT (robotics) and Music. It has been great
to see students from the three schools meeting and working collaboratively on activities. It has
enabled a very different experience for the students.
Under the National Education Agreement and the Australian Education Act, schools are
required to report on school community perception survey data. To assist with our school
planning and improvement, we are inviting parents to participate in a Parent Opinion Survey for
Larrakeyah Primary School. Your opinions are important to us and will help us understand what
we are doing well and how we can improve your child’s schooling experience. The survey is
confidential and it is important that you complete your answers as honestly as possible. It is
expected to take about 10 minutes to complete the survey.
Please access the link to complete the survey online
https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/tqtDxKHx. Please contact the school if you prefer to
complete a hard copy. Surveys should be completed online or returned to the school by this Friday 1 September.
Regards,
Fathma Mauger

Attention!!
Water Mains and Irrigation line works
Work commenced on the water mains and irrigation line replacement project at Larrakeyah Primary School. Noise from
trenching along the boundary fence line started on Saturday 19th August. We would like to apologies for any inconvenience
this may cause to our neighbors. This is a 14 week project managed by Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics.
Last term our year 5 and 6 students participated in the Typing Tournament Quarterly ‘Typing Challenge.’
This was a nationwide challenge where students used an online program to compete against other
schools in a touch typing competition. Our students have been developing their typing skills during ICT
lessons and they are achieving fantastic results.
Congratulations:
6 Waller placed 2nd in the ‘Most Words Typed’ and 3rd in the “Fastest Class’ in the Northern Territory.
6 Mattiazzo for achieving 3rd place in the ‘Fastest Class’ in the Northern Territory division.

News from the Larrakeyah Primary School DSTA
Last Wednesday I went to a DSTA training day at DCO and the training was hosted by VVCS Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service. The focus of the training was on the challenges that can be experienced with the return of a parent who has been away on Deployment or exercise and how at times the reunion isn’t to expectations. VVCS now has a wider scope of services to the ADF Community so have a look at their website to see if they can be of any assistance to you and your ADF family http://www.vvcs.gov.au/index.htm If your family is having any issues with a child having big feelings or difficulties adjusting to the return of a parent please let me know or consider contacting your Defence Family Helpline 1800 624 608 or VVCS 1800 011046 for advice and support. VVCS gifted me a copy of a short story book “Do You Still Love Me? Because I Really Love You!” which is a book to help children understand PTSD if anyone would like to borrow it. On a brighter note to those families that have recently had a deployment and would like recognition of your child ’s perseverance on the home front during the parent’s deployment you can purchase medallions at www.militarykids.com.au and speak to me if you would like to organize a presentation of the medallion.
Father’s Day Lunch Friday 1 Sept, 12:45pm-1:25pm in the Cooking room. Defence Student Father’s/Grandfathers are invited to join their children for lunch and games. All
Defence students welcome to bring their lunch and join in. Only Dad’s will be supplied a sausage sizzle by their kids.
Please RSVP by Wed 30 August. Look forward to seeing you then.
My office is just beside the LOST & FOUND and am finding lots of kids coming looking for their hats or using it as a hat borrowing box instead. Please write your child’s name on their hat and make sure it gets put in their bag as they are missing out of playtime with their friends & sport without it.

Garden landscaping in action!
This week we have been reviewing the success of our propagation by cutting.
We have had varied success; some plants we have found to be more resilient
and successful, these included, hibiscus, coleus, ginger and basil. This week we
learned about propagation by separation, focusing on Water Lettuce, Moses in
a Cradle and Banana plants.
Alongside learning about propagation we have also been continuing our
landscaping projects. 5S are redesigning the composting system in the garden,
5M are landscaping the banana grove and 5/6T are landscaping the garden bed
outside the art room. So far we have managed to measure and clear these
areas. Our next step will be for students to draw a scale plan of the area
inserting their ideas for proposal. Sterling work YR5/6!
Warm Regards Emily Tutty
