Editor Food for Thought… February 2019

As I enter my second month as your Editor, I continue to develop my format and build a library of pictures, articles of interest and other items to share. I know many of you have not gotten on your bikes lately, I mean it is winter here in New Mexico. For me, as a long time Vermonter, I am glad I’m no longer there… This week they have been experiencing up to two feet of snow and minus 10-degree (Minus 25 wind chill) temps. For me riding out here is a pleasure since I can ride all year long. As we move into the new year, I hope all of you get out soon, there are rides being planned and already happening, so if you can’t get on the two-wheeler, join us in your cage. Come enjoy the comradery, cajole with your fellow HOGs and make plans to join rides coming down the pike. Really, this is your Newsletter, so please feel free to share your pics, (and send them to Glen too for his archives) your stories, comments thoughts and anything of humor or on the more serious side. If there is something, you’d like me to include, or something you’d rather I don’t, let me know. I welcome your thoughts as the 2019 riding season gets underway. Ride on and Have Fun…

How many miles did you do?

We will be doing Activities, believe me. How about some rides where we ride a couple hundred miles, stop for a quick Granola or candy bar and ride another couple hundred, then swing back to the starting point. Let’s still do some of those long lunches for some rides, but not on every ride where we lunch than go separate ways? We want to ride, don’t we?

FEBRUARY 2019 NEWSLETTER VOLUME 19 ISSUE 2

Safety Officer Bob, Bob, Bob’s Safety Corner Message: Well here we are again in the chilling grip of winter. The dirt roads are covered in ice and there are those spots that are just slippery clay. On well such is life at 7,000 feet!! Riding anytime deserves caution, however winter riding can be treacherous. For some riders, winter riding is simply not an option. For them the bike simply goes into the garage for hibernation, protected by a thick layer of grease 🤪🤪 and covered by a tarp until the spring colors start to appear. Everybody has different riding habits, but with the right knowledge, some supplies and a little common sense along with some minor changes in riding style, I know that you can ride safely during the winter months except for the worse winter weather. If you choose not to ride, I suggest that you check with the SFH-D Techs on their suggestions for storing your toy ride for winter. Now, let’s talk wind chill. Brrrrrrr 🤪🤪. As we all know a thermometer will give us the ambient temperature. For example, if the temperature is 0 degrees C, then the wind chill is approximately minus 6 degrees C. Now if you are traveling 45 mph the wind chill is minus -9 degrees C. Now that I have challenged my mathematical skill, I will say that if you want a wind chill chart, Google it and make a copy. It is simple to use and faster!! Let’s talk about breaking distance and performance. There several factors that affect breaking distance such as breaking force, speed, vehicle weight and reaction time. Remember these factors are exacerbated by a whopping 10%. Please reference last month’s newsletter on other factors in addition to those just mentioned. I sincerely hope this information helps make your riding exciting, fun and above all safe. The Chapter Board is working hard to make a great riding season. We simply want you to join us for new and different destinations. As always, ride safe and be alert. We want to see you and enjoy the company of all our brothers and sisters. I certainly hope that everybody had a wonderful Holiday season and I am looking forward to seeing you on the road. Bob, Bob, Bob Parnell Sangre de Cristo Chapter Safety Officer 2019

FEBRUARY 2019 NEWSLETTER VOLUME 19 ISSUE 2

To the Best Teams in 2019 Wow, what a year 2018 has been. We clocked well over 500,000 miles this year with our Miles High Club Riders, we managed to host over 500 riders for the Run for The Wall (thanks to everyone that volunteered, we could not have done this without you). We sold more new Harley's than last year and managed to beat the industry and the district in our New Harley-Davidson bike sales. Couple that with being voted, Reader’s Choice for "Best Motorcycle Dealership" by the Albuquerque Journal and that was the icing on the cake. Thank you all for your support and referrals. Selling motorcycles is our life blood and we thank you for helping us to keep it pumping.

With that all behind us, we are super excited about the coming changes for 2019. As you all know - we get your feedback through conversations, surveys and customer satisfaction calls on a regular basis. Your feedback helps us to ensure we have the right products and services for your needs. We only exist if you have an interest in motorcycles and a desire for adventure. We have heard you and we have made some changes going into 2019.

We are making the "Free Tire Installation" program a year-round promotion on all tires that are purchased and installed by us. We want to see you all rack up the miles again this year. In addition, we are in the process of upgrading the shop in a few nice ways, from lifts and lighting to new shelving designed to keep your bits and pieces safe while the team is working on your baby. In this ever-increasing expensive world, we are working hard to keep things in check so you can continue to focus on getting out and riding.

Many of you have shared your first motorcycle experience stories with us and it was interesting to hear the bulk of you started riding on small dirt bikes, scooters or small displacement motorcycles. Your inspirations came from your parents, your friends, your rebellious attitude and your desire for freedom. Freedom of the open road, freedom to express yourself, freedom to go where you want, when you want. As we see some new products from the factory (Electric Bikes, Adventure Bikes and the Street Fighter) both Harley-Davidson and Santa Fe Harley-Davidson have committed to grow new riders these next few years. We are expanding our Riding Academy to offer classes for Trikes and are looking at hosting a few dirt bike classes for the youth in the area. We need your help to share your inspirations with the next generations, to encourage them to try our sport and share what we all get out of this activity.

Thank you for your business and your friendships this year. Happy New Year to everyone and now that were back open for 2019 we look forward to seeing you.

Sincerely,

David & Debby Pearson Jim Pearson Wayne Pugh

Club on hold in 2019. In them mean time, we recommend participating in the ABC's Mileage Program or visiting some rallies,2019

SDC-HOG Membership Info Just another reminder if you haven’t renewed….. Contact Membership Officer Carolyn Besch

Just a note to all members: Your SDC- HOG membership runs from January 1 to December 31 every year and it does NOT run in conjunction with your HOG National Membership! You must be a National HOG member to be a member of SDC.

Dues are still $20 per year and you must fill out a new membership application every year. The application is a liability waiver. Sorry, but we can’t waive that requirement. The waiver allows you to ride with us without having to fill out a ride waiver each ride. These are HOG rules.

A membership application is in this newsletter for your convenience, just print it out, fill it out, attach $20 and drop it off at the store with the store cashiers and they will put it in the safe. Cash or check only, no credit or debit cards. Once again, HOG rules.

The First Question of the Year We have added a section to your newsletter for your feedback. As we come close to the 20th Anniversary of the Club we thought our newsletters can become more interactive. We are starting by asking simple and thought provoking questions. The answers are anonymous and we will share the results as we collect them. We love your feedback on the direction of your club. Your opinions matter and we would like to hear from you. Click on the link below (or type the address in a browser) and help us answer this first question of the year: Do you like the chapter name "Sangre de Cristo Harley Owners Group"? About the Sangre de Cristo Mountains Most of the range is shared by two National Forests, which abut along the range divide. Most of the northeast (Arkansas River) side is located within the San Isabel National Forest, while most of the southwest (San Luis Valley) side is included in the Rio Grande National Forest. The central part of the range is designated as the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. The Great Sand Dunes National Park sits on the southwestern flank of the range at the edge of the San Luis Valley. The range divide is traversed by no paved roads, only by four-wheel drive and foot trails over Hayden Pass, Hermit Pass, Music Pass, Medano Pass, and Mosca Pass.

Northern Sangre de Cristo Range.

The highest peak in the range, located in the south, is Blanca Peak at 14,345 ft (4,372 m); it is flanked by three other fourteeners: Little Bear Peak, Mount Lindsey, and Ellingwood Point.[23] Other well-known peaks are the fourteeners of the Crestone group: Kit Carson Mountain, Crestone Peak, Crestone Needle, and Humboldt Peak. Two sub-peaks of Kit Carson Mountain, Challenger Point and Columbia Point, are named in memory of the crews of the Space Shuttle Challenger and the Space Shuttle Columbia.

“History - Blood on the Mountains” There are several possible explanations for the name of this range, which translates as "Blood of Christ," but the most commonly heard one (although possibly apocryphal) pertains to a Spanish priest who was thought to have been martyred during the Pueblo Revolt of the 17th century. Another explanation was that In 1719 the Spanish explorer Antonio Valverde y Cosio named the Sangre de Cristo ("Blood of Christ") mountains after being impressed by the reddish hue of the snowy peaks at sunrise, known as alpenglow. The dying priest saw alpenglow on the high peaks above timberline at sunset, and exclaimed "Sangre de Cristo!" believing it was a miraculous sign of his impending temporal doom and eternal redemption. You can still see the alpenglow from some locations, miracle or no miracle; good viewpoints for sunset viewing at a distance are across the valley near Los Alamos, or the Winsor Trail Hike (trailhead near the Santa Fe Ski Basin) to a campsite at Puerto Nambe to see the 12,600-foot Santa Fe Baldy. Today tourism is the main economic activity.

50 Years of Easy Riding It is that time again, the time we all Rally together and head to the Round House for the Ride to the Capitol. I love the show of bikes in February that clearly represent the local force we have when it comes to influencing our elected officials. Riders brave the cold weather to travel from all over our state to be a visible force in our Capitol. Please be sure you are one of them. There are rumors of a helmet law bill as well as a distracted driving bill that you might have some interest in understanding. In past years, we have seen hundreds of riders show up at the shop and then ride over to the Round House. We hope you can make it. I was also reminded that this is the 50 Year Anniversary of the iconic movie Easy Rider (with Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson). As it came out on the year of my birth - it has always been special for me. It was one of many reasons I decided to take up riding a motorcycle. As a kid I wanted to be cool and I wanted to buck the system. As I get older - that has not changed.....much. The Santa Fe Film Festival is happening over that same weekend and will be celebrating the film. We will be at their Hall of Fame Night (Feb 17th) - showing off some bikes and joining the Easy Rider Celebration. If you have some extra time - might be neat to go see this cult classic film from 1969. The whole team looks forward to seeing you all at the shop on your way to the Round House. We will have Hot Dogs and Hot Chocolate before we ride out. We look forward to breaking bread with you and continuing to support the rights of all riders on the road. See you on February 16th, David P. Santa Fe Harley-Davidson
