The first trimester focused, of course, on the fundamentals of the language; nouns and their appropriate gender and number endings and matching articles, the use of adjectives, present tense verbs-both regular and irregular, the structure of spanish sentences along with the correct us of direct and indirect objects and their associated pronouns, reflexive verbs-real and false, and intransitive verbs. In addition we had one hour of conversation per day, and one hour of phonetics (this class is something to behold). In our current trimester, we are working on past tense verbs in our grammar class. The goal of our the class this trimester is to make it all the way to the subjunctive, which is the last regular subject in our grammar book. We no longer take phonetics, and instead now have two hours of conversation each day. “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth”We've now completed one trimester of spanish language study. In addition we had one hour of conversation per day, and one

hour of phonetics (this class is something to behold).

In our current trimester, we are working on past tense verbs in our grammar class.  The goal of our the class this trimester is to make it all the way to the subjunctive, which is the last regular subject in our grammar book.  We no longer take phonetics, and instead now have two hours of conversation each day.  At times I feel like I can talk for hours, then at other times, I just can't seem to think or speak at all, in any language.  It's amazing what happens to your brain when you are

learning a new language with this type of intensity.

I am, however, grateful for the

opportunity to be a student here at ILE.  All of the staff and teachers are believers.  We begin every day in both classes with student lead prayer- in spanish.  Moreover, we have chapel twice a week.

Prayer Requests

“I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world.” Rom. 1:81. Pray for our language learningPlease pray that our learning spanish would be swift and complete so that when we arrive in Monterrey we can integrate into the team and the mission as quickly as possible.

2. Pray for the plans for our girlsPray that the plans we have for the the girls to return to the US will come to fruition, that they will be able to find appropriate housing, and be able to enroll in school.

3. Pray for the hearts of our childrenPray that God will continue to guard the hearts of our children both now and always.

4. Pray for Monterrey & for MéxicoAs God was willing to withhold his just wrath and judgement from Nineveh, pray also that God will withhold his wrath and judgement from Monterrey, and all of Mexico. In addition, pray that he will use not only MTW missionaries in Mexico, but every believer to share the words of life in order that God’s Spirit might be poured out across the length and breadth of the land.

I have the privilege of being one of two chaplains to the student body, and also serve on the executive committee of the school's student council.

We are worshiping regularly at a spanish language church in San Felipe, a nearby city.  The pastor, Moises Campos, was involved in an association of evangelical churches in Costa Rica, but is now working closely with Bill Yarbrough from MTW to become an ordained presbyterian pastor.  He recently passed the first of his licensure exams and hopes to complete the ordination process in a year or so.

Our original intention was to only take two trimesters and be finished by the end of the year.  However, we now realize that in order to be able to teach at the seminary competently when we arrive in

Monterrey, an additional trimester will be necessary.  This last trimester for me will be focused on the theological language in spanish, thinking theoretically in spanish, and  then speaking in a complex, and abstract sense.  I understand it will be very challenging.  We will complete all of our training by April and are looking forward to moving to Monterrey immediately after that.

Peace and Grace to you all. Michael
