John Koenig wrote an original dictionary of made up words, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, giving names to emotions we all might experience but don’t have names for. Two these words we used in creation – lachesism, meaning the longing for the clarity of disaster, and anecdoche, meaning a time when everyone has a platform to talk but nobody is listening. The dancers were paramount in the movement creation, as we created material and then fractured the movement or tried to dissociate the timing so as to create varied states of chaos and miscommunication. I dedicate this work to this incredible group of artists, and to the memory of Victoria B. – D.T.

Schubert Dances was first performed by Christopher House in September 1985 at the inaugural Festival International de Nouvelle Danse in Montreal. House has performed the solo across Canada and in such major centres as London, Paris, New York, Mexico City, and Barcelona.

* Note on the recording: these dances are played on a Graf fortepiano from the early nineteenth century, carefully restored in an attempt to approach the sonority Schubert desired from his own playing.

Endangered Species, the anti-war depiction of the horrors of humanity, is explosively re-visited here 37 years after its premiere. With imagery inspired by great works of social realism by Käthe Kollwitz, George Grosz, Francisco Goya’s Disasters of War, and horrendous images of the holocaust, this raw and brutally realistic work has been performed internationally in many countries where political violence is a way of life. Set against Krzysztof Penderecki’s riveting score, its emotional impact resonates to this day.

CHOREOGRAPHERSPEGGY BAKER is one of Canada’s most celebrated and influential dance artists, respected as a performer in the work of esteemed Canadian and American creators; as an educator in important dance training programs throughout North America; and as a choreographer of poetic and visually striking works for her Toronto-based company, Peggy Baker Dance Projects. She is Artist-in-Residence at Canada’s National Ballet School.

DANNY GROSSMAN is a renowned Canadian choreographer, performer, and teacher of modern dance. His unique artistic vision and extensive repertoire integrate humour, beauty, athleticism, and social commentary. In 1977, he formed his own company, creating a repertoire of more than 60 works. His awards include: Dora Mavor Moore, Jean A. Chalmers, Dance Ontario, Muriel Sherrin, and Toronto Arts Foundation’s William Kilbourn Lifetime Achievement. He was recently inducted into the Dance Collection Danse Encore! Dance Hall of Fame.

Born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland, CHRISTOPHER HOUSE has been Artistic Director of Toronto Dance Theatre since 1994. In addition to contributing over sixty works to the TDT repertoire, he has created choreography for Ballet BC, Lisbon’s Ballet Gulbenkian, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, The National Ballet of Canada, Peggy Baker, and Guillaume Côté. He is an Associate Dance Artist of Canada’s National Arts Centre, and a Member of the Order of Canada.

Independent dance artist RYAN LEE graduated from Ryerson University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He has been fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such companies as Anandam Dancetheatre, The Chimera Project, Human Body Expression, inDANCE, Kaeja d’Dance, ProArteDanza, TOES FOR DANCE, and Toronto Dance Theatre. He has made choreographic works for Anandam Dancetheatre, Ballet Jörgen, Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre, Dance Ontario, The Emerging Artist Intensive, George Brown College, and ProArteDanza.

JULIA SASSO is an award winning choreographer, teacher, performer, and artistic mentor. Her choreography has been commissioned and presented throughout Canada, in the U.S.A., and abroad. She performed internationally with Toronto’s Dancemakers for sixteen seasons, and continues to create and perform independently. She is a Resident Choreographer and core faculty member in The School of Toronto Dance Theatre’s Professional Training Program, and teaches in York University’s Department of Dance. www.juliasasso.com

DARRYL TRACY is a Toronto-based independent dance artist: choreographer, interpreter, teacher, and producer. He has created over 38 works, and has choreographed for Connection Dance Works (New Brunswick), L’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal, The School of Dance (Ottawa), and Kenny Pearl’s Emerging Artists Summer Intensive. Most recently, he has created work for the Rhubarb Festival, Nuit Rose, and the Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film Festival, as well as a new solo, All the Patsy’s.
