Southwest Liturgical Conference
January 18-21, 2017
The 2017 Southwest
Liturgical Conference is
going to be held close to
home this year—in El
Paso. This is a great
opportunity to take
advantage of its nearness
to Las Cruces. There are
sessions on all aspects of
liturgical celebrations and
religious education. A flyer is posted on
the foyer bulletin board outlining all the
topics. This would be especially of
interest for anyone involved in parish
ministry. The Cathedral parish is willing
to pay half of the registration fee for
parish musicians or catechists who would
like to attend. The registration form is
available in the parish office.

SAINT HILARY Bishop and Doctor of the Church
(315 – 368) Patron against Snake Bites
Feast Day – 13 Jan
Born to wealthy polytheistic, pagan nobility, Hilary’s early life was uneventful as he married, had children (including Saint Abra), and studied on his own. Through his studies he came to believe in salvation through good works,
then monotheism. As he studied the Bible for the first time, he literally read himself into the faith, and was converted by the end of the New Testament. He then regulated his life according to the rules of the Faith he had embraced, and, though a layman, zealously endeavored to confirm others in true Christianity. Hilary lived the faith so well he was made bishop of Poitiers, France from 353 to 368. Hilary opposed the emperor’s attempt to run Church matters, and was exiled; he used the time to write works explaining the faith. The Arian heresy principally occupied his pen, and he became one of the most strenuous defenders of the Divinity of Jesus Christ. At the Council of Seleucia, in 360, he bravely defended the decrees of Nicaea, and then retired to Constantinople. His teaching and writings converted many, and in an attempt to reduce his notoriety he was returned to the small town of Poitiers where his enemies hoped he would fade into obscurity. His writings continued to convert pagans. He introduced Eastern theology to the Western Church, fought Arianism with the help of Saint Viventius, and was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1851.

Living God’s Word The Church is the new Israel, called to attract all people to the Lord. We must be “the place where the child” (Matthew 2:9) is found today. God’s glory shines through the Church and, despite our many flaws, we are called to become the “place” where everyone can find the Lord and “[do] him homage” (2:11).
