Launch Out into the Deep
Luke 5:1-11
Introductory Thoughts
Jesus has a desire for us to launch out into the deep
To be a people of depth
Luke 5 presents the basis for our deeper commitment
A Deeper Commitment
Peter was a part time disciple at this time – John 1:35-42Part time in the sense that he was still working at his chosen occupation
Jesus finds him tending to his netFishing was done at night – Shallow WaterNo Rod and Reel – Used netsNets must be stretched out to dry or else they would rot
A Deeper Commitment
Peter and others had fished all nightTired – Exhausted – Disappointed
Possible reactions to Jesus Note Verse 5The fish are not bitingI know about your work as a carpenter, but
leave the fishing to me
His obedience to the Lord’s request showed a deeper commitment
A Deeper Commitment
Jesus does not want part time disciplesOnly following out of convenienceHe wants us to be committed deeply
The men in Luke 5Responded ImmediatelyLeft all – businesses, possessions, biggest
catch of fish they had ever seenThey followed Jesus
Take note of this transformation from the shallow to the deep

Think back to IsaiahIsaiah 6:1-8
Preachers and Elders are often asked these questionsWhy aren’t people involved? Why are people not being converted? Why do folks cause problems within the church?
A Deeper Respect or Awe
The answer to the questions is easy
Lack of SightLack of seeing God as He is
We need to continually be aware of God - To see Him in his glory and majesty and might
Also need to see ourselves through unclouded eyesPeter - Luke 5:8Isaiah - Isaiah 6:5
A Deeper Love for the Lost
Luke 5:9-11
In reality this was the message of this eventSave Souls – Luke 19:10
Christ sat in Peter’s – It was his will that drew the fish to the net
It will be Christ's will that draws man unto him
