Publisher’s Note

September - October 2011

The first hints of fall are so thrilling! Although summer hangs on tightly through September, we know

that it will soon release its grip and milder temps are just around the corner. Contrary to other locales,

in the South we get the most use out of our outdoor spaces during our lovely fall and winter months!

September is the time to get our patios, porches and loggias in shape, plant our fall and winter gar-

dens, and just be outside.

In this issue of Laura U | Mag, we showcase some great exteriors and interiors, Natalie Davis dishes

on her favorite florals for autumn, and we take a look at what’s hot this Fall in interiors and fashion.

From the forecasts we are seeing, there is nothing drab about fall 2011; it is all about smart, subtle

tones and vibrant color!

Make sure to visit us at the Laura U Collection to see the latest items in from the Las Vegas Furniture

Market. We are getting new shipments nearly every week. We think you will love the new lines from

Brownstone and Safavieh. You must also pick up a fresh scent from Tocca, our newest addition to

our apothecary section.

Welcome to the fall 2011 edition of the Laura U | Mag! Enjoy the following pages!

A Letter from Letter from Letter from Letter from the EDITOR

Ah fall, why is it that you

tempt us so? I will never

know. It is so very ironic that

with the great experiences of

summer - the travel, outdoor

parties, beach visits and end-

less sunshine - comes the

great feeling of “when will fall

be here?” The season that

fills your heart with the smell

of food, family and friends

and allows you to remember

the joys of new beginnings

and fresh starts. Nostalgically, I look back two years to date

when I first met this wonderful city. Bright eyed and bushy

tailed, I was uncertain about my future here, but optimistically

certain that life would reveal where my place should be.

It’s no wonder that this issue feels so different; as I celebrate

my two year anniversary as a Houstonian, I am also reminded

of the ten year anniversary of what we experienced in the

World Trade Center. Something that resonates with me more

than anything is the fact that as fate would have it, I resched-

uled a prospective job interview on the 15th floor of that same

building, on that very same date that we will now never forget.

You see, destiny and fate will always be and life will always

guide us in the direction that we are supposed to be, our unde-

niable fate.

It’s no coincidence that this issue takes me back to a year ago

when we started this magazine. We started with the notion that

we would use this publication as a way to reach out to our au-

dience and keep them informed about Laura U; instead, we

have created a publication that runs the gamut, from interior

design, fashion, and retail to what’s new in our community.

Like people, our magazine has evolved and I continue to be

amazed at how resilient we are and how much we get to share

with you via Laura U|MAG. So, until we speak again, enjoy our

fall issue!

our contributors

Shannon Ables is the crea-

tor and editor of The Simply

Luxurious Life blog, as well

as a freelance writer and

high school English teacher.

Now living in a rural town

after moving from the met-

ropolitan life in Portland,

she has discovered that a

simply luxurious life is some-

thing that everyone can attain if indeed one is

seeking quality rather than quantity, deca-

dence rather than frivolity, personal style in-

stead of trendy fashions and a truly fulfilling life

instead of being led around by the nose. So

whether it be found in food, fashion, or home

decor, contentment, pleasure and a stylishly

fulfilling life can be cultivated.

Since she was introduced

to thrifting by her

late Grandmother and

Aunt, Tonia has devel-

oped a fascination for all

things vintage. This passion

led her to dabble in interi-

or design, decorating

and writing. A self pro-

claimed professional thrifter and stylist, there is

no singular title that encompasses all she

knows, can do, has done or aim to do. She sets

her own trends and styles without question. Be-

cause of this passion, she created Chic Modern

Vintage, an online place that connects her to

everything she enjoys. She loves rare vintage

treasures, creative people, good vodka, great

food, beautiful clothes, Prince, and old movies.

Bamboo and Emberglow are the two

brightest colors of the fall 2011 Pantone

colors. Bamboo is a warm and exotic fall

hue that can be best described as a

standout yellow with a subtle green un-

dertone. This shade pairs well with most of

the fall 2011 Pantone colors, including

Emberglow which is a radiant shade of

coral and brings in a warm, autumnal

feel to the upcoming fall season. These

two bright colors are wonderfully versatile

and work well as accents.

Pantone dubbed Coffee Liqueur and

Nougat as the season’s classic neu-

trals. Coffee Liqueur is a rich, deca-

dent shade of brown which can be

used an elegant alternative to a basic

black. Nougat is a warm, camel hue

that is easily embellished by bright col-

ors. These neutral colors continue to

add stability to the consumers’ attire.

This reddish-pink color's popularity ex-

right into fall. Being "the" color of the year,

it pairs well with any of the other colors in

the palette. Phlox is a rich purple color

most often associated with magic and

mystique.

Not quite lavender and not quite gray or light blue,

Orchid Hush is a unique shade with complex

undertones that reminds us of morning mists and

mirrored reflections. Quarry is another lighter, softer

medium gray color of the top 10 for fall 2011, and

also shares misty, foggy qualities that makes it a

perfect pairing for Orchid Hush. Both of these colors

will pair well with any other color in the palette.

The fall collections are now available as August marks the

beginning of the fall shopping season, and if there is ever a

time to enjoy the classic feminine trend, it is this fall sea-

son. Designers are beautifully complementing a woman’s

body while structuring clothing that is flattering, yet not too

revealing. With rich textures and lush muted colors,

the beautiful contours of a woman’s figure no matter what

her size is elegantly revealed. Each season offers a chal-

lenge when it comes to wading through the one-time only

trends and focusing on the lasting styles to welcome into

your closet to assured you will always be chic and stylish. So

to help you out, we’ve chosen the top five trends for this fall

season that every woman should be looking for as she pe-

ruses through her favorite boutiques, trusted department

stores and go-to online shops that are guaranteed to shine

for years to come.

SUBTLE SEQUINS Sequins are now more than appropriate for day-time attire

as well as evening and with the trend to make them less

flamboyant and more chic and luxurious they are perfect

as a complement to a monochromatic wardrobe that

adds that extra pop of personality.

Wool Trench Coat

One of the most important fall pieces to invest in is a winter coat as so often that is the only piece

people see of your wardrobe. So it is imperative to invest in a style that will last for many years.

This season the trench is back, but it’s wool and in an array of rich muted colors as well as the

classic camel go-to choice.

Color Blocking

Something that has really

caught the attention of many

this season is the color block-

ing trend. It is not really a new

trend but it is definitely back

with a big bang. Color block

fashion is one of the hottest

new trends for the season. It

combines the use of two or

more blocks of color in an en-

semble. This could be for a

top, bottom, tunic, a dress

and even a handbag or

shoes. Simply it means – creat-

ing an outfit by putting areas

or blocks of solid color next to

each other.

Below the Knee

Pencil skirts have

been back for a few

seasons, but this fall

the hemline is falling

just below the knee.

Ideal for a work set-

ting, pair a pencil skirt

with a beautiful silk

blouse and cinch with

a skinny or corset belt.

Cropped Wool Trousers

Executive creative director of J. Crew Jenna Lyons

continues to impress fashionistas and critics around

the world with her ability to take a classic style and

add a modern touch. With the cropped capris wool

trousers, the melding of spring and fall come togeth-

er to create a fresh, yet seasonally appropriate look.

And J. Crew isn’t the only one. Jason Wu and Zac

Posen also decided to shorten the length of their

trousers this season. J.Crew - $118 (multiple colors)

Tie-Neck Blouse

A trend reminiscent of the 70’s, the tie-neck blouse,

returns, but is much less cumbersome as many de-

signers, such as Rachel Zoe, have created lower

necklines that make it much more flexible if you wish

to take your look from day to evening.

46 46 46 46 |||| LauraU

Fall is nearly here, and it’s one of my favorite times of year!

The air is just beginning to become crisp, the scent of

pumpkin spice lattes fill the air at local coffee shops, every-

one is smiling a little bigger while cozying up in their early

winter clothes. People’s homes are beginning to feel a bit

more welcoming, candles are burning, the smell of baked

pumpkin pies resonate at bakeries, families are gathering

and the colors of warmth is everywhere. What better time

of year to splurge on a little flowerily love? Adding a touch

of natural beauty to your home, especially flowers, which

emanate a sense of peace and positive vibration, makes

the most largest of spaces feel intimate.

Natalie Davis, owner of Bohemia Flowers shares her Fave Florals for Fall!

Page 47: Laura U|MAG Sept/Oct Issue

Flowers: Amaryllis Chinese lanterns Cymbidium Orchids Dahlias Hydrangeas Iceland poppies Marigolds Ranunculus Roses (garden and spray) Tulips (apricot and black parrot) Foliage: Oak Leaves Rosemary Seedpods Twigs Vase Fillers: Curly Willow Miniature pumpkins Lemons Gravel Accessories for the Arrangement: Bitter Sweet Berries Feathers: My favorite are peacock feathers, they are great

for height! You may also use guinea feathers which work well for wrapping around curly willow with a little bit of moss to give your arrangements a whimsical feel.

Table Accessories (to place around your arrangements): Autumn leaves and branches Pomegranates

Raffia and dried wheat spring

Vases: Personally, I prefer square. For a great sophisticated and modern look, go with black glass or silver. You can always take a stroll on Montrose and look for some good finds...let the vase have character and become part of the arrange-ment not just something flowers are placed into. Colors: Blacks and rich chocolate tones mixed with deep golden hues and reds bring the warmth of fall inside. Purples are also wonderful; the color purple has always been associated with royalty, as well as respect and admira-tion. It also has been linked to spiritual fulfillment and relaxa-tion. So in case you are looking for something to create a calming effect in your home, purple is a great call. 47 47 47 47 |||| LauraU

Fall is the perfect time of year to unleash your creativity while creating your masterpiece. There are endless options that you can accomplish design wise. Whether you are looking to create something simple or extravagant for your entry way, a romantic arrangement for the bedroom or a beautiful center-piece for your dinner table, fall is the perfect time to play with an array of textures and golden hues. When designing an arrangement, I try to stay away from de-sign “rules”. I take into consideration, my color palette and the space where the arrangement will go, and from there, I allow

the flowers to create their own story… I allow the flowers to guide me the way they want to be arranged. To help you break the mold in designing, I have listed some of my favorite fall flowers and accessories. I hope you have a blast while designing! Let the process relax you. Enjoy connecting a bit with mother nature, there seems to not be enough moments in the day to do so. Go ahead and flower arrange your way into a blissful mood while creating

the perfect floral fall world for your home. Enjoy and express.

F ALL DESIGN TIPSALL DESIGN TIPSALL DESIGN TIPSALL DESIGN TIPS

To start, make sure you select a floral arrangement style, each arrange-

ment can be formal or informal; depending on where you are placing

the flowers decide what would be more appropriate and go from

there!

Remember to keep in mind that each flower arrangement

should have symmetry and balance; both are equally im-

portant in order to keep the piece from looking unraveled.

Choosing a “mood” for your flower arrangement is key! Decid-

ing on a vase/container can really help with this process.

Be sure about your section of flowers, it is better to have them

arranged by size; larger plants should go on the bottom with

smaller ones on top.

If you are using large focal plants remember to not over crowd

the arrangement, depending on the size of the container never

use more than 6 or 7.

Don’t forget that you can always use filler plants or filler plant

materials for example, fun foliage pieces, grass, or certain types

of bark to fill up the flower arrangement.

Reminiscent of the Abstract Expressionism movement of the 1940s, emerging artist Stacy

Hosrich unleashes the creativity of his subconscious through his impulsive approach, making the

process just as important as the painting itself. Painting with a mix of media, he captures the es-

sence of himself, the energy of shapes and color on canvas in the form of uncalculated marks, rich

textures, scrapes, splashes and rich loads of pigment. He also uses complex manipulations of

positive and negative space to achieve drama in his picture field. Hosrich received his degree from

Sam Houston State University and divides his time between his Huntsville studio and his home in

Houston. His work is held in many private and public collections.

Outdoor Design:

To accomplish outdoor design, the style of your backyard

should complement the style and structure of your house. The

personality of the owner should be reflected within the design,

because this is an extension of your house and should be just as

personal as your indoor home. First and foremost the function

and use of the outdoor space must be determined. Will this be

primarily for more intimate settings, to entertain, to relax, enjoy a

view or meal?

Now that we’re getting into the season of fall, we’re all finding it a

little more relaxing and comfortable to be outside. We are all working

on taking our social areas outside with outdoor living areas that have

a more sophisticated look with materials and design, allowing fami-

lies and friends to reconnect in a different environment. Furniture is

becoming more indoors influenced and comfort (cushions) is taking

precedence in almost every design. Kettal’s innovative furniture de-

signs are perfect for entertaining or relaxing in a stylish outdoor envi-

ronment.

Kettal Atmosphere Dining Table

The goal of this outdoor design was to enjoy a gorgeous view with the ability to relax. Kettal’s

Landscape, Venezia and Atmosphere Collections are shown here and gives homeowners a

great range of ideas from which to choose for their outdoor living space. Wicker furniture has

become increasingly popular with a more refined look and an appealing taupe shade. Dec-

orative pillows and cushions with varying designs are used to add color and give the space a

comfortable homey look and feel. It’s all about taking the inside out now, and this design

does it well with the use of the outdoor sofa and fire pit. While the design is a very important

part of any area, the view here is what ties it all in. You can see how the design was done for

the view, placing the furniture to strategically take advantage of the beautiful views in all of

the spaces.

The client requested a “quiet retreat” with a boutique-

Stop and Shop: Laura U Collection

Houston interior designer Laura Umansky has expanded her current retail space and

now occupies the additional three preexisting retail spaces next door. The interior is ele-

gant and clean with white walls and an open floor plan. Located at 1840 Westheimer,

the Laura U Collection offers customized handmade furniture and unique accents for the

home. At Laura U, you will find the work of local artists, internationally found objects and

fine decorative pieces. And with the new addition, there are great vintage pieces that

have been restored and can now breathe new life into your space!

Page 74: Laura U|MAG Sept/Oct Issue

The concept:

The client wanted this space to be fresh and

welcoming with lots of seating, while also keep-

ing a chic, sophisticated style. The idea was to

use a soft palette of very pale pinks and silver

with a little pattern and lots of white. In addition

to newly found pieces, there are also pre-

existing pieces from the owner that were reup-

holstered and refinished, adding new custom

designs to the space.

The design style for this living space was based

on an elegant spin on Hollywood Regency. The

room incorporates Lucite and leather, plush

velvet and soft pink, antique mirrors and metal-

lic gold accents throughout. The concept was

to create a beautiful, interesting space to use

for entertaining multiple guests.

The challenges:

The space had to be completed in a short time

frame and within a certain budget. This was a

challenge, but also an opportunity for the de-

sign team. Using their creativity and the clients

love for vintage, they were able to restore

great finds, and coupled with small and large

accessories, the space was created to reflect

the taste of the homeowners.

BLUE Tones

Navy Blue is the color of the moment. It has this

calming influence that speaks to the inner

strength, especially when contrasted with pure

white. With a classic, timeless look, it works best in

public places. While “truer” and darker blues

make it on our list, be careful with royal and ice

blues (pictured below) as they might bring out a

saddened mood and can become overbearing

if done over large spaces.

Green Tones

According to research, green is the most pleasing

color to the eye, especially the lighter, Mint or

Kelly green. It creates a sense of equilibrium as it

evokes nature. It’s a great mixer, but don’t put

too many greens together. Dark greens, such as

forest green and hunter green (pictured below)

can be seen as dull and uneven when plastered

throughout an entire room.

Neutrals

Beige has been reinvented to be more striking, yet

still traditional. Best in a living or family room, it pro-

vides versatility by allowing homeowners to quickly

change the look of a room with just accessories.

Beige brings a room together and harmonizes the

whole house, creating a sense of security. Mustard

yellow and peach (pictured below) are slowly

making their way out, bringing too much warmth

to a room and developing too many senses for a

room of relaxation.

Red Tones

Red goes with everything! A Tomato Red is delicious

in the kitchen. It works to develop your guests’ sense

of taste and smell and is known to arouse sensation.

It can give off lots of energy, but beware of deep

reds, like maroon (pictured below), as it can be-

come overdramatic and somewhat of an aggres-

sive color when overused. While pinks make for nice

accessories and color for a room, a light, bub-

blegum pink (pictured below), can be overwhelm-

ing and too youthful when used in large amounts.

Giving Back

This past April, we donated some unused tile

samples to a Troop Leader for Girl Scout Troop

#4490, Brownies thru Ambassadors. The girls had

their hearts set on making decorative stepping

stones for a nursing home nearby. So they got

busy and made these beautiful stones that they

were all so proud of. The seniors at the center

couldn’t have been happier knowing that these

kids were thinking of them. We’ve also recently

given them 3 bags full of scrap material that the

troop plans on making mini handbags for the

women at the nursing home. We’re hoping to

get pictures of those as well once they’re done!
