“Voy a entraren Central Catholic High School este otoño y despuésquiero ir a Florida State University.”

Hispanic Week andthe VIP Luncheon

It is promoted as a cultural event but in reality it isthis part of our culture that scares the non-Latinos, perhapstired of our custom of starting late and having longspeeches.

The Anglo faces, which used to be majority inprevious years, were the minority this time. Theyrepresented the big corporations buying whole tables filledwith their executives trying to get to know us and enjoyour cuisine, only to leave hungry for the lack of time.

It is true that we salute and congratulate the board ofdirectors for the magnificent decorations and thepresentations, but it is also true that we must criticize themfor allowing a candidate like the Attorney General TomReilly to utilize our time and our money to promote hisown candidacy for governor. We don’t believe the VIPLuncheon is the proper venue for political campaigns.¿Can you imagine if each of our local candidates had donethe same?

Hispanic Week has advanced greatly in its twenty-seven years of history. Let’s hope that with this year’stheme of “Crossing the Bridge” they achieve the blendinggoals they established.

Mayor Michael J. Sullivan ispleased to announce anotherinstallation of a Safety Station at thenewly expanded Pemberton Park inLawrence, MA. Born out of thetragedy of four boys who drowned inthe Merrimack River just a few shortyears ago, these stations are a morepractical answer to people calling forthe river to be fenced in. It was decidedthat most children could find a wayunder, over or around a fence and thatany type of barrier would actuallyhamper a rescue effort by public safetypersonnel. “We have many potential dangersthat are just inherent to ourenvironment and we must learn to stayvigilant so that all our residents remainsafe. However, just as railroads andhighways provide great transportationopportunities, our rivers provide terrificrecreational opportunity whenapproached with caution,” MayorSullivan stated. The safety stations were designedto incorporate the Red Cross lifesavingtechniques of “Reach-Throw-Row-Go” and have the critical componentof alerting professional help to a rescuein progress. The stations are accessed andactivated by pulling the fire alarm, which is directly wired to the BodwellStreet Station and also sounds a localalarm with a flashing red strobe light. These sturdy cabinets wereconstructed by the LawrenceDepartment of Public Works andcontain the following equipment: Anextendable reach pole with shepardcrook, two ring toss buoys with floatingline, life jacket for rescuer or victim, awell stocked First-Aid-Kit, two thermalblankets for hypothermia, and alifeguard whistle with lanyard. The wiring and fire alarmtechnology was done by the Alarmdivision of the Lawrence FireDepartment and is weather proof andwill even operate during a rare poweroutage. The funding comes courtesyof the Lawrence Rotary Club who hasadopted this program after theirmembership reached out to the Mayor’sOffice with their usual generosity.

“The men and women of theLawrence Rotary Club come from allover the Merrimack Valley andwhenever they learn of a tragic eventthey never want to assess blame but justwant to know how they can help,”Mayor Sullivan stated. “I am reallypleased to continue this worthwhileprogram of safety but I don’t know ifit would have been possible without thestrong support of out LawrenceRotarians.” The dedication took place riversideat Pemberton Park on Saturday, June11, 2005 at 1:00PM. This is the fifth station installedand several more are planned. “This isone investment I hope is never used butI feel better just knowing that they arehere," Mayor Sullivan stated.

“Saving Private Ryan,” director Steven Spielberg’s World War II drama, is thefictional account of the rescue of an enlisted man after three of his brothers die inthe European theater. The movie has evoked painful memories of how the warshattered families and left parents to watch helplessly as, in some cases, their sonsdied one by one.

In Lawrence, Massachusetts, “Private Ryan” has been a poignant reminder ofthe plight of the four Campagnone brothers. Albert, 21, died in Germany aroundChristmas 1944. Carmen, 18, was blown apart by a minefield in the Rhineland’s inMarch 1945. The following month, Bernard, 32, died in Holland when a Germanplane bombed his truck.

In four short months, Mary and Stephen Campagnone saw the war claim threeof their four sons. As each son died, the Campagnones, aided by RepresentativeThomas J. Lane, asked the Army to keep their remaining sons off the battlefield. The couple’s requests were turned down by Army brass, since military policyprovided that a soldier would stay in the U.S. if he was his family’s sole survivingson. Only after Bernard was killed did the Army return Private AnthonyCampagnone to his parents.

Today, the Lawrence Common is named after the Campagnone brothers and amemorial stands in their honor.

Note: Provided by Stephen C. Campagnone, Anthony’s son, there are 1945 lettersand telegrams detailing the efforts by the Campagnones and Representative Laneto stem the family’s casualties. We think these documents also serve as a tribute toone family’s heroism and heartache. To read these documents, click intowww.thesmokinggun.com.

Fiorentini to joinGov. Romney tosupport expeditedpermitting

Mayor James J. Fiorentini said todaythat he would join Governor Mitt Romneyat the State House on Thursday June 16th, at1:30 at the State House in Boston to expresssupport for a new State law the Governoris submitting on expedited permitting.

On Thursday, Governor Romney isexpected to unveil his proposedamendments to the expedited permittinglaw, Massachusetts General Laws chapter43D. Mayor Fiorentini has been invitedas one of only a few Mayors in the Stateto attend the event.

Fiorentini said today that he wouldjoin with the Governor in supporting theexpedited permitting legislation. “We havemade expedited permitting a priority herein Haverhill,” said Fiorentini. “We havesped up permitting for outdoor dining, forbuilding permits, death certificates and foodservice licenses. However, there is only sofar we can go as a community working onour own. This legislation takes us to thenext level. This legislation allows us toamend our laws to provide for consolidatedand expedited permitting hearings, consolidated appeals, and generallyguarantees that permitting for new businessesin an expedited zone will he handled in anexpeditious manner.

Numerous studies have shown that oneof the primary barriers to new business ispermitting. Businesses have told me,repeatedly, that the number one thing we cando for business is to make the permit processeasier. This law provides us with theroadmap and the tools to accomplish ourgoals. I am happy to join with GovernorRomney in a bi-partisan effort to speed uppermitting.”

Mayor thankscouncil forsupport of auction

Mayor James J. Fiorentini tonightthanked the city council for its continuingsupport of auctioning city land. Thisevening, the council voted 7-1 to declareland surplus so that real estate closingscould take place and the city receive$600,000 that was scheduled to take placebecause of the auction. Fiorentini saidthat the council did the right thing insupporting the auction: “The city had twochoices this evening, to allow real estateclosings to take place or to place the cityin dire legal jeopardy. The city councilmade the right decision in movingforward.

This auction has always been a jointeffort of the Mayor’s office and the citycouncil. I campaigned on the issue ofhaving a land auction to sell off vacantland we no longer needed. Manycouncilors campaigned and worked onthe same issue. Working together, wewere able to have the most successful landauction in the history of the city. OtherMayors have called me and asked howwe did it.

The auction was a great success, butit was not perfect. There are things thatneed to be improved, and I will work withthe council to improve them. The CityCouncil did the right thing tonight. Theyput politics aside and worked for the goodof the city. I thank them for theirsupport.”

IN THE

MERRIMACK

VALLEY

By Frank Benjamin

D o r o t h yChadwick was thecoach and was onher way to a placein the MethuenHigh School Hallof fame. One ofthe area’s finestfemale athletesChadwick had

some good and athletic girls on this year’ssquad and they were eager to show their“Rangerette” ability and pride.

The high school was called the TenneyHigh School in those days and now thejunior carries that name. This season wasto be very special because it was to be

Methuen Field Hockey in 1959

Methuen’s first ever venture into this sport. It remains to be very popular under thetutelage of Karen McLaughlin who hasrecently been named the new hoop coachafter serving as an assistant hoop coachunder legendary coach and woman athleteMimi Hyde who is a Hall of Famer, as welI.Karen’s daughter played for her mom andwon many awards and a trip to college. Herdad, Frank, is president of the LawrenceTeachers Union. In those days not manyschools were featuring girls’ sports and fieldhockey was not yet popular, thus the crowdswere sparse.

Chadwick was fortunate that a braveand adventurous group decided to give thisnew sport a try. Her hopefuls included DotMarquette, Diana Sleeper, Mary Pierce anda future city league fast pitch softball playerSandy Seglin. Sandy starred for the Ace ofclubs perennial champs of that league.Other pioneers of this sport includedBarbara Lancaster, Jane McQuillan, VeraMartell, Elsie Esperian, Lorna Mailhot,Barbara Lavoilette, Sharon Lane andUrsulla Stundza.

The blue and white won 3 and lost 2with 5 games being cancelled due tosickness to one team or the other. TheRangerettes shut out North Andover twice1/0 and 2/0; big wins as the red and blackwere big rivals in those days. They tookthe measure of Topsfield 2/1 and suffered aloss to Wilmington 2/1.

With a contest looming with thedefending State Champs Marblehead, theMethuen coach knew her kids had to be at

the top of their game. Imagine the scene,it’s your first season ever at field hockeyand you are to meet the best in the State.Chadwick’s kids were equal to the task butthe champs eke out a 1/0 win. The winnerswere picked to win big but the Rangerettesdisplaying lots of heart and courage wouldnot give in.

Dot Chadwick, a name to remember inMethuen sports was also a physicaleducation teacher and later the supervisorof that division in the school system waspleased at the showing of her chargesagainst such great odds. She singled outSeglin who scored every goal except one inthe season. Barbara Lancaster registeredthat one. Dot Marquette was the goalie onlyher second year at that position. Last yearshe was the netminder as a junior varsityplayer before field hockey became a varsitysport.

Ursy Stundza was a star at right wing.Others wearing the blue and white andmaking big contributions were Dot Budd,Sheila Pierce, Carole Androski, Susan Alt,Nancy Worth, Marie Toohey, CharlotteWhiteside, Julia Dwyer, Gail Budd, andSusan Whiteside. Frances Foster was theCaptain, Dot Budd and Phyliss Whittakerwere the team Managers. This team willbe able to say we probably weren’t the bestever at Methuen but we will always be thefirst ever.

The legendary Dot Chadwick was theproud coach of that first field hockey teamin 1959. They compiled a 3 win 2 lossseason.

We are cordially inviting everyperson interested in helping in theplanning of a festival, celebration or anyactivity for the Hispanic community ofHaverhill. The Haverhill HispanicFestival that has been celebrated for thepast four years is not going to happen thisyear. Mari Carmen Cintron and her LatinoResources Network office have workedvery hard to bring such an event to thecity. That festival has been a pleasure andsatisfaction to us all with the outstandinghelp of sponsors and a group of hardworking volunteers.

Mari Carmen announced this yearthat the festival will not happen this yearand encouraged anyone that would liketo continue with this celebration, promising that she will gladly help.

At this time, there is a group ofpersons of Haverhill willing to continuewith those events. Fliers have beendistributed and posted around town tonotify the residents. The first

Haverhill Hispanic Festivalmeeting was held June 6, 2005. We havenot formalized our status and we don’thave a name to identify us but that is oneof the group’s goals, to have a name anda board of directors. We want to establisha good, respectful relationship that bringsno conflict with other groups already inthe community.

We would like to take thisopportunity to thank and give ourappreciation to Mari Carmen Cintron forher community work in this city, something that nobody can deny. We hopeto have the same success and support thatshe had during the past four yearsplanning an event of this magnitude. Thenext meeting will be held June 27, 2005,at 6:00 PM at the Haverhill PublicLibrary, first floor.

VOLUNTEER WITH HOMELESS CHILDREN

Lawrence, MA - junio 15, 2005 Rumbo - 21

I would like to thank youall for attending this eveningand supporting my candidacyfor Mayor of Methuen.

I would especially like tothank the V.F.W. for allowingme the use their hall for mymayoral kick-off.

My opponent has beencollecting money andrunning for mayor for the last15 years. He is the perpetualmayoral candidate. Can youimagine how many favors he

owes?My opponent has been sputtering

around tactics from the old politicalplaybook, touting the fact that he is goingto run a “POSITIVE” campaign. I am goingto talk about Mr. Manzi’s past record andthe fact that for the last 6 years he has sat asthe second highest elected official in theCity of Methuen and done absolutelynothing except what Sharon M.oney Pollardhas directed him to do.

Billy Manzi has gone along to get alongand got along to go along, even when thiscourse of action was not in the best interestof the people of Methuen. Case in point,Mr. Manzi as one of his first orders ofbusiness when elected Chairman of the CityCouncil, abdicated the City Council’s powerof oversight, by initiating an ordinanceincreasing the mayor’s contract spendingpower from $10,000 to $50,000.

What this did was allow SharonM.oney Pollard to approve contracts up to$49,999.99 without ever going in front ofthe council, who represent us!

For those of you who are my loyalRumbo readers know, this decision was notin the best interest of the citizens, somethingthat I have been writing about for over fiveyears. All this ordinance did was satisfySharon M.oney Pollard’s zest for power, with a promise to Billy Manzi that shewould support him when he was finallyallowed to run for the mayor’s seat with herblessing, only when she was done. In otherwords, Billy Manzi sold his soul and oursfor 5400 votes.

I cannot blame Billy Manzi one bit fornot wanting to talk about the past; it is avery negative reign. It is a legacy of “goalong to get along, get along to go along.

I would love to put a laurel wreath onManzi’s head, a gold metal around his neck, and a bouquet in his arms… we can onlywork with what he gives us, and to say theleast it is abysmal.

You must always keep in mind that Mr.Manzi has served as councilor longer thananyone, and for the last 6 years he has servedas the second highest elected official in theCity of Methuen.

Ellen Bahan’s kick-off speech

Money is not anentitlement to holdpublic office.

Let me tell you what my plans are whenI become Mayor of Methuen. The very firstthing I am going to do is have and audit. Asweeping audit done by an unbiased firm, preferably not from this state. It will includethe grants, enterprise funds, MethuenCommunity Television and endowments.

My candidacy is about sweepingchange, accountability, integrity and honor. The next order of business will be amoratorium on building. We need toaddress our water distribution system.Methuen under the tutelage of SharonM.oney Pollard and the second highestelected official Billy Manzi is coming offof the largest build out in the history of theCity.

Years ago when I was looking into thewater situation, I had the opportunity tospeak with the supervisor in charge of thedrinking water program at the Departmentof Environmental Protection and wasinformed that during the peak summerseason, our water system is at its maximum. This information was provided to me longbefore Mar-Lin Project AKA Mills FallsApartment was on line. There have beenmany more projects since this and we haveyet another slew of projects to go. We musthave clean drinking water for all ourcitizens, this will be a priority.

Public Information will also be a hugeissue in my candidacy. I believe that whenpublic information is not readily availableor too costly for the regular citizen to obtain,it sends a certain message. It tells thecitizens, the taxpayers, that we must acceptwhat we are told without question becausethe politicos in power are smarter and betterequipped to run our lives. What do youthink?

I am for the expansion of MethuenHigh School, but I will not be approachingthe solution like that of my opponent. I havebeen watching closely the economic climateof the state. By all accounts revenues areon the rise. However, there seems to be adeficit in what was promised under the oldguideline for state funding of capital schoolprojects. Reported last week in the BostonGlobe was the fact that in the schoolreimbursement program there could be 1.5billion dollar deficit. This deficit would putthe newly proposed school reimbursementprogram sorely behind the schedule of theoriginal date of 2007, to get our plans firmedup and our application in the works.

This will give us time to be sure thatthe soil around the Methuen High Schoolis thoroughly tested before one shovel fullof dirt is moved, something my opponenthas not considered. Methuen High Schoolis still reporting heightened illness relatedto the student and teacher population.

I will work diligently for the citizensof Methuen, ensuring that they will comefirst whenever I am negotiating, somethingthat is not happening in the currentadministration, the very sameadministration where Mr. William Manzi,III has sat as the second highest electedofficial for the longest period of time.

Thank you for coming, please vote forme on November 8, 2005.

excellence that Bellesini sought to impartto his students. “This year we honor a youngman who has worked hard and excelledacademically, but also served as a model ofcitizenship and service”, she said.

“In the past three years we have beeninfluenced by many people in our lives. Butwe feel that there is one person who standsout as having gone the extra mile for us,”said Joshua Duran when he introduced thekeynote speaker, Judge Robert Bohn, atrustee at Bellesini Academy.

“Judge Robert Bohn has been a faithfulvolunteer each week during our eveningstudy period. He started an after-schoolMoot Court program and taught us thebasics of trying a case and courtroomprocedures. More importantly, he hastaught us the value of life and how weshould treat people. Judge Bohn is a Justiceof the Massachusetts Superior Court, yet hehas always found time to devote to helpingus in any way he can,” said Duran.

In his address to the graduates, JudgeBohn called them “champions of justice”and had special messages to every one.“Work hard. Reach for your goals. Hold ononto your dreams and don’t let them go.”Judge Bohn singled out, and left RonnieOrtega to be last. He recalled going throughthe Globe sports pages with Ronnie andlearned from him about the Dominicanbaseball players. “His English was betterthan my Spanish,” he said.

“The Judge was like a tutor to me,” saidRonnie Ortega when we met with him at acelebration party his parents and relativesheld for him that evening. “He taught menew words. He made me feel very proud ofmyself,” said Ronnie, a B student throughthe years according to his recollection.

What is in the future for Ronnie? “I willbe entering Central Catholic High Schoolthis fall and after that I want to go to FloridaState University.” His reasoning to go toFSU is that “my teacher, Amy Brown, hasa niece who graduated from there and shealways speaks very highly about theschool,” said Ronnie.

The US publisher CambridgeBrickHouse, Inc., receives unpublishedmanuscripts every day from authors all overthe world, and in many languages.

CBH Books editors carefully select theauthors for their collection, and offer avariety of options for them to realize theirdream of publishing a book. But theinnovation of this company lies not only inthe smartly-designed volumes that theyrelease to the marketplace, but in theservices they offer so that a manuscript cansee the light of day without needing to sella million copies.

CBH Books opened its doors more thanten years ago, as VersalBooks. Since then, its team of editors, proofreaders, designers, illustrators and layout professionals havebeen hard at work, making sure that theirbooks are noticed in a crowded market. “Wewant to stand out for the quality of thecontent and for the care we put into ourbooks, not to make a quick buck bycapitalizing on sensational topics,” saidCliff Clark, senior editor at CBH Books.

“First at all, let me be clear. We are nota self-publishing company. We know thatauthors these days have the option ofpublishing directly through a printer orthrough middlemen who have taken overthe Internet market, but that just adds onemore layer of confusion between the authorand the finished product. The true readers, however, will recognize a book backed bya serious publisher as opposed to one thathas only been released in reaction to thelatest scandal, without the input of literaryand publishing experts,” added DavidMallick, executive editor of the company.

CBH Books differentiates itself fromthe experience with other publishers byestablishing close personal contact with itsauthors, regularly sharing information withthem about the progress of their books andwhere they stand in the editorial process.

CBH Books also promotes writingworkshops and offers consulting services.

“We gladly review all of themanuscripts that we receive. Then wedecide if the manuscript qualifies for atraditional publishing, a coedition, or a fulleditorial review, two new options that havebeen very well-received among our authors, and ones that they tend to prefer, actually.Authors want more than the traditional 10%royalties; they would rather invest in theirown work. We have seen this more and moreamong Hispanic writers, while before onlyUS writers tended to do this,” said PriscillaColon, an American editor who isnevertheless very proud of her Latino roots.

But for all of the editors’ good words,it is the authors themselves that decidewhether their experience with CBH Bookshas been a good one. “The editions areexcellent. I was quite pleased with thequality; the books are beautiful. I was soimpressed that I have decided that this willbe my year of prose. I don’t know why, butthey made a profound impression on me,”commented José Vilahomat, author of thepoetry collection Miami, who then becamea repeat customer with his children’s bookCuentos de Taita y Vejigo.

“You can’t imagine the smile I have onmy face… I just received the books and Ialmost can’t believe it. It is such a blessingto see my book in print. It is a dream cometrue, a wish that I have had for years,” saidan overjoyed Mauricio Bernal Restrepo, author of the poetry collection Sonetosindiscretos.

CBH Books distributes its books allover the world, and promotes all of itsauthors with equal interest. For moreinformation, visit the CBH Books web siteat www.CBHbooks.com.

Spread the word; authors who havemanuscripts gathering dust and have alwaysdreamed of seeing their books on shelvesin stores, will thank you for it.
