Space, the final frontier in our small homes

URGING the family todiet, de-clutter or justto all breathe insimultaneously aresome of the ways to

cope with a home that’s burstingat the seams.

It may be a small comfort to knowthat it’s not just your growingchildren, possessions and pets whichare making even the largest spacefeel claustrophobic – homes haveactually shrunk!

A new report by the RoyalInstitute of British Architects(RIBA), has revealed that new housesare generally smaller than they were30 years ago. On average, a newthree-bedroom house in the UK is 8%smaller than the recommendedminimum size.

“Our research confirms thousandsof cramped houses – shamefulshoebox homes – are being churnedout all over the country,” said HarryRich, chief executive of RIBA.

Nationally, the organisation foundthat the missing space wasequivalent to a single bedroomcapable of taking a single bed, bedside table, wardrobe, desk andchair.

But, instead of despairing orconsidering an expensive housemove, it could be time to considerwhether you’re using your currentspace wisely, and if its layout suitsthe way you want to live.

“If your home is small, or not aslarge as you’d like, every bit of it hasto work for its keep,” says ElizabethWilhide, whose inspiring book, SmallSpaces, is packed with clever ideas.

“You may be able to discoverhidden space in homes that’s beenoverlooked, as well as using spacemore effectively.

“A spare room could double as anoffice, a breakfast bar might improvea kitchen and a large bedroom couldbe divided.

“Storage can work wonders, too.Space under the stairs could providean additional seating area, or be autility cupboard. Stair treads can betransformed into drawers and alanding could be utilised for storageor a fitted desk.”

Designers, recognising thegrowing need for compact or multi-functional pieces, have used theirtalents to create excellent furnitureand ingenious products for thespace-starved. “Small space living issomething to celebrate. It doesn’thave to mean settling for secondbest,” insists Wilhide.

“Focus on the benefits rather thanthe frustrations. Smaller spaces areeasy to clean and cheaper to heat andrun. With a more flexible approach

to arranging your living space, youmay find it suits you after all.”

Follow our space-savvy advicefrom the experts and check out aselection of smart solutions to helpyou squeeze every last inch fromyour home.

COOK UP SPACE“Make the most of every inch ofspace with integral storagesolutions, such as pan drawers, curved corner units and cantilevercarousels,” advises Jude Keenan, kitchen planner at John Lewis’sOxford Street London store.

“Choose units in a neutral colourthat will stand the test of time andcreate a feeling of space, andintroduce colour on worktops andappliances for a more individuallook. Opt for slimline appliances orintegral models which can be hidden

away. Reflect more light and createan illusion of more space with awhite matt ceiling and light colouredupper walls.”

SPACE STRETCHERS: A Padstowtwo-door larder unit, £1,499, from

Marks & Spencer, is a new gem in itsrange. It has six roomy drawers, twocondiment racks and an automaticinternal light. Bosch have released adishwasher, £399, that’s barely biggerthan a microwave and takes six place

settings. If there’s no room for thatuseful kitchen island – no problem! ADenford butcher’s trolley, £700,provides an extra worktop, basketsand drawers. Both items availablefrom John Lewis.

SMALLSOLUTIONS: Anexpanding shelforganiser, £11, fromThe Holding Company, maximises cupboardspace by providingextra shelves. Stellar’sEazistore range ofsaucepans, frying pansand stockpots stack andnestle inside each otherlike Russian dolls. Pans,£185 for the set;stockpots and casseroleset, £225.

Murcia,from163,000eurosPOTENTIAL propertybuyers thinking of investingin Spanish property shouldlook no further than thepopular province of Murcia,in the south east of thecountry, according toexperts at The-MoveChannel.com

Data from theindependent, internationalproperty portal revealsMurcia is one of the mostsearched-for locations forSpanish property, with LaManga, Caragena and MarMenor the destinations ingreatest demand.

Dan Johnson, director ofTheMoveChannel.com, said:“Spain remains the numberone country in terms ofenquiry volume to the site, but we have seen a rise insearches for property in theMurcia province and CostaCalida, in particular.

“When compared to otherwell-known coastaldestinations, such as theCosta Blanca or Costa delSol, Costa Calida representsgood value for money, withample distressed and bankrepossessed stock availableto purchase at heavilydiscounted rates.”

According to the latestSpanish House Price Index

from Kyero.com (July, 2011),the average asking price forproperty in Murcia standsat 163,000 euros – 62%below the national average.

Prices have steadily fallenover the last 22 months, from a high of 185,000 eurosat the end of 2009, as DanJohnson explains: “The

Costa Calida was one areaof Spain where the over-supply of property had asomewhat negative effect onthe market in the boom;however, now there aresuperb opportunities forinvestors to purchaserepossessed property anddistressed developments

direct from the bank atbargain prices. This, coupled with future growthin tourism to the region andthe 50% reduction in IVA(equivalent of English VAT)until the end of the year, makes now the ideal time tobuy in Murcia.”

And, there are plenty of

reasons why those buyingproperty in Murcia can beoptimistic about the future, with tourism to the regionset to receive a boost fromthe approved ParamountTheme Park, which is due toopen in 2015.

In addition, it will now beeven easier for visitors to

reach Murcia, due to theupgrade of Corvera inter-national airport opening in2012.
