CURRICULUM VITAE
Rob GOMMANS Rob Gommans (1961; Dutch nationality) studied materials science and engineering at the Delft Technical University and has a Master’s Degree since 1987. During this period practical work has been performed at Sandoz (now Novartis) in Switzerland. His Master’s Thesis has been performed at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission about the interaction between creep and high-temperature. In 1987 Rob Gommans has started his career at DSM and worked for all its production plants. He was involved in materials investigations, properties and behaviour of metals and alloys and failure investigations. In most cases these metals have been applied as pressure vessel components or (rotating) machine parts. However, Rob Gommans is specialized in high-temperature problems, brittle fracture and failure investigations and mainly worked for the ethylene and ammonia plants. In 2000 Rob Gommans has started his own business as independent technical consultant in the area of materials behaviour. He worked for the (petro-)chemical industry, EPC-contractors, power stations, pulp- and paper industry, boiler and vessel manufacturers, manufacturers of special high-temperature steels, steam- and gas turbine manufacturers, insurance companies and damage surveyors. Rob Gommans is also active in various technical (materials) committees, such as the Technical Committee for Pressure Vessels in the Netherlands and the European Collaborative Creep Committee. Rob Gommans has set-up inspection programs (a.o. for urea and ammonia plants) based on RBI philosophy and supervised these inspections. He performed failure investigations, provided consultancy for many clients/companies, mainly in Europe, but also in Brazil, Argentina, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait, Qatar, Syria, Libya, Egypt, Canada, USA, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia and Singapore. He organises training and courses on materials, corrosion, inspections and is also asked as guest speaker in this area. Training courses has been provided as open courses and in-house training for many clients. Technical presentations have been held at various (international) conferences. He assisted Giel Notten with the high-temperature subjects in his Corrosion Engineer Guide. Rob Gommans has also acted as expert witness in arbitration and court cases.

During this period practical work has been performed at Sandoz (now Novartis) in Switserland. His Master’s Thesis has been performed at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Petten about the interaction between creep and high-temperature corrosion of Alloy 800H in a sulfidising, carburising and oxidising atmosphere. In 1987 Rob Gommans has started his career at DSM and worked for all (53) its production plants. He was involved in materials investigations, properties and behaviour of metals and alloys and failure investigations. In most cases these metals have been applied as pressure vessel components or (rotating) machine parts. However, Rob Gommans is specialized in high-temperature problems, brittle fracture and failure investigations and mainly worked for the ethylene, syngas and power generation plants. He has many contacts in the (petro-)chemical industry in Europe and actively participated in national and European projects. In 2000 Rob Gommans has started his own business as independent technical consultant in materials science : "Gommans Metallurgical Services" (GMS). He worked for the (petro-)chemical industry, EPC-contractors, power stations, pulp- and paper industry, boiler and vessel manufacturers, manufacturers of special high-temperature steels, steam- and gas turbine manufacturers, insurance companies and damage surveyors. E-mail : [email protected] Between 2005 and 2015 he owned MCC Materials & Corrosion Consultants, a company specialised in investigations, inspections, and consultancy on materials and corrosion. Mainly for pressure vessels and (rotating) machinery in the process industry. Complete inspections including scaffolding, insulation (removal and application) and NDT were managed in-house. structuurverval en carbidevorming(klasse 1)
MC‐KnowHow ‐ lezing LDR 29 maart 2016 LastechnischeDiscussiegroepRotterdam
Materials & Corrosion Know‐HowRob GOMMANS 9
georiënteerde kruipholten (klasse 3)
• Holten gaan zich oriënteren op de korrelgrenzen
• Oriëntatie zichtbaar loodrecht op de spanningsrichting
• Onderscheid tussen klasse 3A en 3B is de
hoeveelheid gevormde holten (3B: parelsnoer)
klasse 3
MC‐KnowHow ‐ lezing LDR 29 maart 2016 LastechnischeDiscussiegroepRotterdam
Materials & Corrosion Know‐HowRob GOMMANS 10
micro-scheuren (klasse 4)
• Holten groeien en groeien aaneen, waardoor de
tussenliggende “damwanden” verdwijnen, en
de eerste microscheurtjes worden gevormd.
• scheurtjes verminderen de dragende doorsnede,
waardoor spanning en vervormingssnelheid
toenemen.

klasse 4B
macroscheuren (klasse 5)
• Tertiaire kruipstadium
• Microscheurtjes groeien, groeien aaneen
