Professional Learning Communities Leadership Seminar

for District and School Leaders A 2-Day professional learning experience focused on

the critical understandings, skills, and practical strategies that leaders need, to enhance the capacity of PLC ‘s in their schools

Learning Outcomes . . . Begin by assessing the circumstances of the school’s current culture and capacity to change, examine

a "dashboard" of current student achievement, take a quick read on school priorities and capacity to find time for collaboration.

Based on the self-assessment of their school, establish realistic expectations and a vision for what they want to achieve.

Select a focus for their PLC, learn by doing project for the coming year

Learn by doing - apply what you learn about leading PLC’s to develop an Action Plan for the coming year.

Network with colleagues, to consider and receive feedback, reflect on current leadership strategies to build teacher collaboration.

Professional Learning Communities Leadership Seminar for District and School Leaders Day 1, Thursday August 7

8:30 – 10:00 Introduction What are PLC'S? Why collaboration? Assess Where You Are Walk through several school “readiness” assessment tools; Current priorities and agendas,

organizational practices, culture for change, student achievement results, political landscape.

10:30 – 12:00 Create a Vision How to: set realistic expectations, develop a common language for the development of your PLC, a

timeline for expected outcomes a clear vision for where you want to be at the end of the year and a roadmap for getting there.

1:00 – 2:30 Build Foundation Elements How to: Establish the key elements of an effective PLC; decision making processes, roles and

responsibilities, a clear purpose and direction.

3:00 – 4:00 Establish Organizational Efficiency How to: design effective and efficient organizational procedures, build effective agendas, utilize

meeting notes, delegate authority, schedule time, establish meeting protocols.

Day 2, Friday August 8

8:30 – 10:00 Lead Collaboration How to lead the development of teachers capacity to effectively collaborate with each other:

establish powerful norms of collaboration, create professional dialog sessions, deal with resisters and blockers effectively.

10:30 – 12:00 Lead Collaboration How to: encourage teachers to share stories of personal practice, discuss their challenges and

successes with colleagues in a trusting, professional environment, build a culture of team.

1:00 – 2:30 Focus on Student Learning How to: direct the conversations of your PLC to look critically at the 4 Rick DuFour PLC questions –

"What do we want students to learn? How will we know when they have learned it? What do we do when they don’t? What do we do it they already know it.

Apply Continuous Improvement Methods How to: apply the skills and strategies of a continuous improvement model, including use of data

to inform instruction and determine appropriate interventions, measure the performance of their PLC and share data with students and community.

3:00 – 4:00 Review Action Plans, Implementation Ideas, Resourcing, and Networking How to: use online networks for professional growth, provide “just in time” professional

development, utilize and share resources, finalize and review your Action Plan for successful implementation.
