LEADERSNEWS Welcome to 2019 at Edwardstown Primary; a special welcome if you are a new family joining our school community. We have 62 Receptions and 26 new families across our 19 classes, with 491 students. We pride ourselves on being a friendly and inclusive community, and encourage all families to become involved in our school. This may include joining the Governing Council, a committee, Walking School Bus, or helping in the Canteen, Library, classrooms or camps. Communication is the key to a collaborative partnership, and teachers send emails home as a way of regular contact; please understand teachers will not respond to emails after 6pm and before 8am. Newsletters, See Saw and Skoolbag are other ways to hear about school happenings. EPS has been identified as a school demonstrating growth in student results, and this year our focus is on intellectual stretch, developing resilience and persistence, particularly in literacy and numeracy. Our whole school Resilience programme will be further explained on Acquaintance Night on Wednesday, February 13th by classroom teachers, and our partnership Behaviour Coach, Mat Haslett will run a parent workshop. Mat works closely with our school and this week presented to our teachers. It is highly recommended you make time to hear his advice on how best to support your child/ren. He will cover information on screen time, setting boundaries with your children, anxiety and stress factors, rescuing versus accountability and friendship/ bullying issues. Please keep the night free to meet your child’s teacher and set up the year for a positive start. He spoke about the importance of recognising the difference between anxiety (a chronic condition) and being anxious due to a new situation. Children are settling into new classes and you can help by being positive and allowing teachers to work their magic once you leave. The school has a calm, settled feel and it is rewarding to watch new classes get to know each other and develop cohesion across year levels. We have listed the teachers working together in Professional learning teams (PLTs) to ensure all students have consistent learning practices. STAFF CHANGES There are many new faces on the EPS staff this year as some of our longer term teachers have taken extended leave. In our Reception team we welcome Isabelle Watts and Kate Stanbury, who join Erin Hodges: congratulations to Alex and Au Ling Yin who welcomed baby Brooklyn into the world in January. Crissa Coleman has transferred from Lameroo and is teaching Year 2. Sue Boggiano has been replaced by Danni Richmond (JP) and Damien Raidis (3-7) in P.E, and Ben Smedley (JP) and Caitlin Koutsikas (3-7) are covering STEM/Digitech. Caroline Fitzgerald is replacing Joy Groves, and Lucy Standish is working with us Friday afternoons to ensure continuity with our Choir programme. Georgia Gaitanis has taken bereavement leave for 5 weeks; we will no longer be funded to offer Greek lessons.

FACILITIES UPDATE Our new double unit arrived in the holidays, and is now being fitted out ready for Rooms 21 and 22 students to move in as soon as possible. The Department understands our desire to have classes settled soon in the new school year, and all will be operational later in the term. We are still in negotiation with the redevelopment of the surrounding area, and will have an update at our Council AGM at the end of February. Our new mural depicting our kindness tree looks fantastic- thank you to Kirsty Shadiac from Art Venture and our 2018 Year 7 classes for making it happen. Thank you to Dennis and Malanie and all the Vac. Care staff who ran an engaging and busy vacation care programme for up to 100 children each day during the holidays.

ACQUAINTANCE NIGHT SCHEDULE Please make sure you book in Wednesday, 13

th February to hear about your child’s learning and class plans for the

year. We will offer supervision in the Yard for our students if required, as adults only in classrooms due to space. The Hall will be used by Mat Haslett for his presentation for Parents only, so we encourage students to be cared for if possible.

All classrooms will be open for parents, and teachers will spend 15-20 minutes explaining class routines and curriculum and leave time for questions and chats between families. If you have more than 1 student at school we ask you to spread your time accordingly, and attend the most appropriate workshop for you.

VOLUNTEERS Criminal History Screening (DCSI) and RAN (Responding to Abuse & Neglect) is required for volunteers in public schools. It depends on your role and your interactions with children. Camps, swimming, coaches and Council members require a clearance, as do any adults other than school parents. Please enquire at the Front Office. All applications are now done online through our Deputy Principal, Vicky Bashford. Parent volunteers in classrooms or on day excursions currently do not require a screening check.
