LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY
It’s my pleasure to present you with some highlights of Glacier Hills as we review the achievements and improvements that have occurred since our affiliation with Trinity Health Senior Communities in this Progress Report. Throughout its history, Glacier Hills has evolved in order to maintain the highest standards of excellence in all aspects of care. The nonprofit organization’s 2016 alignment with Trinity Health Senior Communities was a natural step in its progress.
Over the past two years Glacier Hills has experienced remarkable growth in its ability to care for families, including its residents, colleagues, and the community-at-large. We remain focused on ensuring the highest quality of life for all the generations of people who are touched by the organization and I am excited to share an overview of our future plans. In particular I am delighted to announce two new campus initiatives that will significantly enhance the quality of life for residents, colleagues, and families: the addition of an onsite Primary Care and Specialty Clinic and an Early Child Development Center. See inside for the details!
We are sharply focused on the importance of investing in our colleagues. I am excited to let you know that Glacier Hills was chosen as one of seven Trinity Health affiliates nationwide to pilot a new program called StandOut for the next year to help accelerate our progress in colleague leadership development and engagement. Developed by Marcus Buckingham, StandOut helps individual colleagues identify their strengths to improve the experiences we create, support development and growth, and identify colleague needs. We’ve also made it a priority to implement HealthStream, our online internal training and professional development program. As regulatory mandates continue to require diligent effort in our industry, HealthStream allows Glacier Hills to efficiently manage compliance. Finally, we are grateful to our generous friends and donors for our ability to offer colleagues educational scholarships through the Glacier Hills Foundation and Trinity’s tuition reimbursement program.
Abraham Lincoln said, “the best way to predict your future is to create it.” That quote accurately represents our work at Glacier Hills as we develop a Masterplan that will carry us forward. The types of initiatives in the pipeline include capital improvements to The Manor, expansion of our technology infrastructure, exploration of a Glacier Hills campus in downtown Ann Arbor, expansion of our dementia care program, and a renewed focus on customer service through the implementation of the Red Carpet Learning System across our campus.
This is an extraordinary time for Glacier Hills. Our recent accomplishments and these new initiatives demonstrate our commitment to provide the highest level of service to our residents and colleagues. They also strengthen our position as the premier senior living community in southeast Michigan. We are very grateful for your ongoing support.

SENIOR LIVINGREPORT 2018
Healthy Generations
The fiscal year ended June 30, 2018 included significant changes to our application software and information technology infrastructure. We
were transitioned to the Trinity Health platform, upgrading to state-of-the-art technology. Although
a challenging transition for colleagues, we continued to generate superior care and services
while generating an above budget Operating Margin and Net Income of $5,072,341. The
synergies and economies of scale from the Trinity affiliation continue to add economic value
to the Glacier Hills financial strength. While the investment portfolio returns were not as
strong as some recent years, we continued to have substantial gains adding to Net Income.
Through these resources and the expertise of our colleagues, management, and governance, we
continue to serve our residents and community with excellent care and services.
In 2017-18 Glacier Hills supported the following community events and organizations through sponsorships and volunteer participation: Food Gatherers, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Washtenaw County United Way, Ann Arbor City Club, Ann Arbor Housing Bureau for Seniors, Big Hearts for Seniors, and Ann Arbor Rotary Club.

CultivatingWELLNESS
In 2003 Glacier Hills established the Wellness Connection, a campus-wide wellness program designed to take a holistic and integrated approach to health and well-being. Incorporating six dimensions of wellness (physical, emotional, spiritual, vocational, intellectual, and social), the Wellness Connection strengthens our ability to serve older adults with a continuum of lifestyle, care, and support alternatives embracing enrichment of the whole person.
The Wellness Connection has grown significantly in the scope of the fitness programs, health lectures, special events, and personalized services it now offers. In keeping with a national health trend, this summer Glacier Hills introduced its own weekly Farmer’s Market for residents, colleagues, and the local community. The Farmer’s Market is open every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on campus from June to September. In partnership with Kapnick Orchards of Britton, Michigan, the market offers a glorious variety of fresh fruit and vegetables such as strawberries, raspberries, sweet cherries, rhubarb, radishes, cabbages, cucumbers, snap peas, red skin potatoes, and even nut butters. Shoppers also receive recipes that make the most of the produce available.
Drums Alive! Is one of the newest classes taking place in the Stephen B.Dobson Life Enrichment Center. With drumsticks in hand, residents enjoy fun aerobic and flexibility exercises inspired by dynamic rhythm and music. The class is led by a music therapist and no previous music or drumming experience is necessary.
The Wellness Connection fitness center houses state-of-the-art fitness equipment and several items were purchased recently, some with grants from the Glacier Hills Foundation.
• Two treadmills were replaced with new Precor machines.• A Precor Adaptive Motion Trainer, a weight-bearing but non-impact
cardio machine, was a wonderful addition.• A TRX suspension trainer and a BOSU ball balance trainer were
also added.

DAY CARE
New Onsite Clinic and Early Child Development Center Coming to Glacier Hills Campus
For over forty-five years Glacier Hills has continually renewed its commitment to providing an exceptional senior lifestyle through transformative change. Eighteen months in the planning, Glacier Hills is proud to announce two new campus initiatives that will significantly enhance the quality of life for residents, employees, and families: the addition of an Onsite Primary Care and Specialty Clinic and an Early Child Development Center.
Staffed by local providers from IHA and Michigan Medicine, the campus clinic will transform the way that residents currently receive medical care. It will eliminate barriers to regular primary care and laboratory visits, and increase access to specialty medical services. By having these services available at The Manor in Glacier Hills, residents can be assessed more efficiently, treated sooner, and get a head start on their recovery. This initiative:
• Builds on strong medical partnerships with nearby hospitals and health systems• Eliminates transportation difficulties when visiting a physician• Strengthens existing health services at Glacier Hills such as the Wellness Connection and the Outpatient
Rehabilitation Department• Ensures smooth coordination with local physician groups with the potential to offer oversight of post-surgical care and
therapeutic services
Glacier Hills is committed to providing a professional and supportive workplace for all employees. As the campus has expanded its workforce, there is a unique opportunity to offer onsite child care and child development programs in partnership with an established child care leader, the Ann Arbor YMCA.
Many national studies have demonstrated the extraordinary benefit for employees and families when organizations take the visionary step to provide onsite child care. The benefits increase exponentially when these centers have the participation of older adults. Research has shown that children who interact with older adults in a co-located facility experience higher personal and social development compared with children in non-intergenerational programs. Children gain positive role models, develop trusting relationships, and demonstrate strong communication skills.
Glacier Hills residents will have the opportunity to volunteer at the child development center on a regular basis or enjoy visiting with the children in a more informal fashion. Thanks to our generous donors, the Glacier Hills Foundation is working to provide reduced-fee tuition subsidies for qualifying employee families.

Glacier Hills Foundation Helps Ensure Healthy Generations Across CampusThe Glacier Hills Foundation launched the Healthy Generations Campaign in early 2018 to support the construction and launch of two new programs: the Onsite Primary Care and Specialty Clinic and the Campus Child Development Center. The initiatives were enthusiastically embraced by residents as well as individuals on the waiting list, and their open-hearted generosity has propelled the campaign forward. The clinic funding goal for construction was achieved in record time, and additional dollars raised will be used to support services and equipment. As of June 30 funding for the Child Development Center is on track to reach its goal before the end of 2018.
Generous scholarship gifts from donors plus active use of Trinity Health’s Tuition Reimbursement for employees resulted in over $200,000 of educational and professional development support to over 100 employee “scholars.” Kudos go to our employees, our employer, our donors, and our dedicated Scholarship Committee comprised of residents and community members, and chaired by Mary Ann McDonald.
The Glacier Hills Foundation surpassed $10M in its asset base and was the recipient of two new endowment funds. Endowments support specific programs and projects, plus generate funds for the Foundation’s annual grant cycle and its new tri-annual grant cycle. Grant proposals are received from residents and colleagues, and a few from resident families. Proposals go through an established review and approval process by standing and specially appointed committees, and the Boards of Glacier Hills.
Since the last Progress Report, the Foundation has distributed or awarded over $1.5M to programs and projects that bring or will bring extraordinary benefits to our residents and those who serve them. The following are just a few examples of areas receiving support: art and music therapy, art across campus, Campus Clinic, Child
Development Center, landscaping memorials, library books and large print reader, life enrichment (music, dance, lectures, theater, outings), scholarships and emergency loans for employees, and Wellness Garden and Wellness Center.
